Last Sunday was Western Heritage Sunday and it was a great Sunday! The worship services had carefully planned and perfectly performed music by our accomplished organist Sue Trukken and pianist Dorothy Scheafer. The Praise Band, the Chancel Choir, and special guest Barry Ward raised their voices to the glory of God. Pastor Matt was at the top of his game and delivered an inspiring sermon. The Western Heritage BBQ sponsored by the Fishermen UMM and catered by AZ Barbecue served over 100 delicious (but not low-calorie) meals. Sunday was indeed a day that the Lord had made and we rejoiced and were glad in it! To Honor James EvansDixie Lee Larson has graciously donated

a very meaningful book to the SVUMC Library entitled The Children by David Halberstam in Honor of James Evans.

Our very own Jim Evans took part in the "Lunch Counter Sit-In" in Greensboro, NC

in the 1960's racial struggles defined in this account. The other four students were

college friends of Jim's.Check out this book!

“Stirring … Griping ... Compelling ... Fascinating ... The Children ... records a more inspiring chapter of our national epic and honors genuine heroes –anonymous outsiders, lit with moral radiance, who made America a vastly better place.” —The Boston Sunday Globe

There will be a United Methodist Women's Retreat on Saturday, February 22nd from 9 am to 2 pm in Fellowship Hall. This year's focus is Friendship, Kind-ness and Love.......what a better way than to find out the needs of Women and Children in Jeopardy in our community as we can promote a positive and safe life for local women and children. Our speakers will be from Lori's Place and Foster Care.

There will be fellowship and a devotion, coffee and a light brunch, ice breakers, door prizes and round table discussions. We plan to have a catered Box Lunch before closing with communion served by Pastor Jean Festa.

RSVP to Kathy Marvin with the number of persons attending by Wednesday, February 19 so we are able to order the lunches. Kathy's contact information: phone: 803-6697 or email: [email protected].

Thank you to Emmaus for hosting January's Sunday Fellowship. We are still looking for other groups to host sometime this year. An a big “thank you”, for all the home baked goods that we received in the months of December and January. Our freezer is empty and we are in need of baked goods to continue our Fellowship.

We do not have enough volunteers for Sunday Fellowship for the next 6 months. Please consider sponsoring Fellowship one Sunday and see when your committee is available to do so. Contact the Church Office or Mary Andersen if you have any questions about Fellowship.

The SVUMC Earthkeepers team is planning an Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 26 at noon, after the church services. We are planning games, informative displays, and a potluck including your favorite vegetarian dishes. We are asking for your help in putting together a fun day to celebrate the beautiful planet we have received from God, and our biblical mandate to be good stewards of these blessings. If you can help us, please contact Jeanne Festa (520 271-1007), Lea Benson, or Kathy Marvin. We will meet in February on Thursday, Feb. 13th , 6 P.M. in room 5 of the Fellowship Hall, and Thursday, Feb. 27th at 6 P.M. in the sanctuary narthex. Please join us!

Thanks to everyone who made the Fishermen’s Western Heritage BBQ a success (and enjoyed some great BBQ while doing it). Everyone from those who planned it, those who sold tickets, those who publicized it, those who set up and then cleaned up, those who helped serve it (the J-Walkers) and to AZ BBQ who once again provided the great food. Finally, congratulations to the winners of the best dressed couple (Curt and Mary Tipton), best dressed gal (Dixie Larson), and best dressed guy (Dale O’Neill) contest, all shown above in their pictures with our special guests, Barry and Victoria Ward.

Every Wednesday morning at 8:00 am, Sonrisers, a group of men, gather in Room 5 in Fellowship Hall to do just that. We talk about the scriptures and how they affect our lives as well as answering questions, not only about the scriptures but about life. No special knowledge is needed and all material is available each week.

Join us! We look forward to new ideas and thoughts.

SonrisersSonrisersHave you ever wanted to ask questions or talk about the scriptures used in the Sunday morning service? Well, we have a group for you.

An Invitation from SVUMC Earthkeepers

Please join us to learn about the ‘other half’ of your own water cycle from ground water pumped to your home, down your drain, to the treatment plant to the aquifer by way of the Sierra Vista Environmental Park. The process of wastewater treatment, water quality standards, the recharge of the treated water in the constructed wetlands at the Park, and wildlife in these wetlands will be discussed and viewed. Join us on this free tour. Reservations are required.

Recycled greeting cards will be sold this Sunday after the 7:30 and 9:00 services in the fellowship hall. St. Patrick Day cards will be sold along with all other occasion cards. Cards always available from the cart in room #5. All proceeds go to SVUMC women’s mission work.

We’re in need of lots of donations for United Methodist Women’s annual rummage sale. Bring your gently used items to Fellowship Hall anytime or, if you have a large item, we can arrange a pick-up during set up for the sale, March 23-26. We need kitchen items, books, electronics (flat screen TV’s only), appliances, holiday decor, craft and sewing items, linens, furniture including patio furniture, pet supplies, toys and clothing. All items must be in good condition and in working order! We need lots of help with set-up and also during the sale and after the sale for clean up! Lunch will be served daily! Workers will be able to purchase items at full price during set-up! Come and visit with old friends and make some new ones. All proceeds from our sale go to mission projects.

You can find out more about the seven-page Protocol of Reconciliation & Grace Through Separation agreement that has been in the news recently at www.umc.org. If you need assistance getting a copy of the Protocol, please contact Nicole in the Church Office.

Please pray for General Conference, which meets May 5-15 in Minneapolis. Rev. and Mr. Paul Gomez will serve as our clergy and lay delegates from the Desert Southwest Annual Conference, with Rev. Anthony Tang and Ms. Julie O'Neill going as alternates. Delegates are not representatives. That is, they are not sent to “represent” the views of their conference, local church or any particular constituency. The annual conference delegates authority to each person elected to vote their conscience, as moved by the Holy Spirit, about the matters before them, seeking what is best for the life and witness of the church of Jesus Christ and the entire worldwide denomination. More information about General Conference can be found at www.umc.org and www.dscumc.org.
