The Jesus Code � Unraveling the Secret�We all love to unearth hidden things, to crack some puzzle or code. We need only to look at the hoopla that surrounded The Da Vinci Code to see how true this is. Like children, we all s�ll believe there’s a buried treasure somewhere, a secret wisdom, just wai�ng to be found.�

Interes�ngly, Jesus speaks of just such a hidden secret. The gospels tell us he spoke in parables and that these were only understood by those who were inside a certain circle, but they remained riddles to everyone outside that circle.�

That, of course, begs the ques�on: What is the hidden secret and who is inside and who is outside the circle of understanding? In the message of Jesus, what’s the secret to be discovered, the code be cracked?�

Mark’s Gospel takes this up explicitly. His Jesus makes it very clear that there is a hidden, secret wisdom that needs to be grasped if one is to understand the deep design of things. What is it?�

In short, it’s the cross of Christ and the wisdom that’s contained within it. The hidden secret is that love is most truly revealed in the brokenness of Jesus on the cross. What’s hidden in the cross of Christ is the code that we have to break open if we are to learn the deep secrets of life. The cross contains a wisdom, the wisdom of the crucified, which is a prism through which all else is to be viewed.�

More specifically, what is this wisdom?�

Unlike false, gnos�c teachers who are forever playing games and giving the impression that learning the deep secrets is a ques�on of luck, brilliant intelligence, or of becoming their disciples, Jesus tries everywhere to reveal the secret in public and in a language open to everyone. �

El Código de Jesús � Descifrando el Secreto�

Todos nos gusta descubrir cosas ocultas, descifrar algunos rompecabezas o códigos. Necesitamos solo mirar el alboroto que rodea al Código Da Vinci para ver qué tan cierto es esto. Al igual que los niños, todos creemos todavía que hay un tesoro escondido en algún lugar, una sabiduría secreta, esperando a ser encontrado.�

Curiosamente, Jesús habla de ese secreto escondido. Los evangelios nos dicen que él habló en parábolas y que estos solo fueron entendidos por aquellos que estaban dentro de cierto círculo, pero permanecieron un misterio para todos los que estaban fuera de ese círculo.�

Eso, por supuesto, plantea la pregunta: ¿Cuál es el secreto oculto y quién está dentro y quién está fuera del círculo de la comprensión? En el mensaje de Jesús, ¿cuál es el secreto por descubrir, se descifra el código?�

El evangelio de Marcos lo aborda de manera explícita. Su Jesús deja muy en claro que hay una sabiduría oculta y secreta que debe comprenderse si se quiere comprender el diseño profundo de las cosas. ¿Qué es?�

En la cruz de Cristo y la sabiduría que con�ene. El secreto oculto es que el amor se revela verdaderamente en el quebrantamiento de Jesús en la cruz. His whole life and mission are an a;empt to lay open for

everyone the deepest secret of all and to make that secret

accessible to everyone, as accessible as the nearest water tap

or the village well. Since Jesus, the deepest secret is an open

secret. What is it?�

One entry into it is through the words Jesus speaks to his

uncomprehending disciples on the road to Emmaus. In trying

to explain this secret, he asks them: “Wasn’t it necessary?”

Wasn’t what necessary?�

The secret is that there is a necessary connec�on between

certain things: Isn’t a certain prior suffering and humilia�on

always the condi�on for glory? Don’t we all, like Cinderella,

first have to sit in the ashes before the glass slipper will fit our

feet? Isn’t sublima�on always the means to the sublime? Isn’t

it precisely when we are vulnerable and unable to impress or

overpower others that we are finally open to in�macy, love,

and family? Aren’t self�sacrifice and self�denial, in the end, the

way real love manifests itself? Isn’t the crucifixion of the

private ego the route to empathy and community? Isn’t the

forgiveness of those who hurt us the final manifesta�on of

human maturity?�

And, most graphic of all, isn’t the way Jesus died�innocent,

trus�ng, unwilling out of love to protect himself against

suffering, absorbing hatred and sin, understanding and

forgiving those who were murdering him, refusing to resort to

any kind of superior physical power to overwhelm his

adversaries, refusing to give back in kind, and refusing to give

himself over to bi;erness and cynicism�the paragon of

mature human love?�

Love is the deepest mystery within the universe. It lies at the

base of everything, the cosmic, the biological, the emo�onal,

the psychological, the sexual, the spiritual. There is no level of

reality where one doesn’t see the relentless deep pull inside of

all things towards a unity, community, fusion, and oneness

beyond self. Love s�rs all things, speaking to every element in

the language it can understand. Deep inside of us, we know

too that this alone can bring us home.�

And there is an inner code, a certain DNA, within love itself. It

too has inner secrets, an inner structure, and a code that

needs to be cracked if we are to properly understand its

dynamics. And we don’t crack that code all at once, at a

weekend retreat or at religious rally. We crack it slowly,

painfully, with many setbacks, over the course of a life�me.�

But Jesus gave us the keys to crack it. They can be named:

vulnerability, the refusal out of love to protect ourselves, self�

sacrifice, puAng others before ourselves, refusing to give back

in kind when someone hurts us, a willingness to die for others,

the refusal to give ourselves over to cynicism and bi;erness

when things beset us, con�nued trust in God and goodness

even when things look the opposite, and especially

forgiveness, having our hearts remain warm and hospitable,

even when we have just cause for hatred.�

These are the keys to the wisdom that Jesus revealed and the

gospels tells that we are “inside” or “outside” the true circle of

love, depending upon whether or not we grasp this wisdom.�

Y, lo más gráfico de todo, no es la forma en que murió Jesús: inocente, confiado, dispuesto al sufrimiento por amor, absorbiendo el odio y el pecado, comprendiendo y perdonando a quienes lo mataron, negándose a recurrir a algún �po de poder Gsico para vencer a sus adversarios, y negándose a entregarse a la amargura y el cinismo, el modelo del amor humano maduro?�

El amor es el misterio más profundo dentro del universo. Se encuentra en la base de todo, lo cósmico, lo biológico, lo emocional, lo psicológico, lo sexual, lo espiritual. No hay un nivel de realidad donde uno no vea la implacable atracción profunda dentro de todas las cosas hacia una unidad, comunidad, fusión y unidad más allá del yo. El amor agita todas las cosas, hablando con cada elemento en el lenguaje que puede entender. En lo más profundo de nosotros, también sabemos que esto solo puede llevarnos a casa. �

Y hay un código interno, un cierto ADN, dentro del amor mismo. También �ene secretos internos, una estructura interna y un código que debe ser descifrado si queremos comprender adecuadamente su dinámica. Y no desciframos ese código de una sola vez, en un re�ro de fin de semana o en una reunion religiosa. Lo rompemos lenta, dolorosamente, con muchos reveses, en el transcurso de una vida.�

Pero Jesús nos dio las llaves para descifrarlo. Pueden llamarse: vulnerabilidad, el rechazo del amor para protegernos, el sacrificio, poner a los demás delante de nosotros, negarse a devolver algo cuando alguien nos las�ma, la voluntad de morir por los demás, la nega�va a entregarse a nosotros mismos. cinismo y amargura cuando las cosas nos acosan, con�nuamos confiando en Dios y en la bondad aun cuando las cosas se vean al revés, y especialmente el perdón, que nuestros corazones permanezcan cálidos y hospitalarios, incluso cuando tenemos justa causa de odio.�

The session will include a discussion of the sacrament of Baptism, the completion of the necessary forms, a review of the guidelines for potential Godparents and the date for the Baptism will be chosen. English Baptisms take place on the fourth weekend of the month at one of the Masses.��

Turning Strangers into Neighbors FaithAction ID Card Update


Please Note: The FaithAcJon ID Card program is a means of

providing a picture ID Card to anyone who may need one for

their personal use. It is not limited to any specific group of

persons.�

The FaithAcJon ID Card program schedule here at Blessed

Sacrament Church for the next several months is as follows:�

Friday, May 4, 2018 �Doors open @ 9:00 AM�

No one is admi;ed once the orienta�on session begins. So

please plan accordingly.�

Requirements for the Faith ID Card:�

1) Par�cipa�on in the FaithAc(on ID Orienta�on; �

2) Proof of Iden�fica�on (original documents not copies: i.e.,

na�onal ID card, passport, school ID, expired driver’s

license, library card with photo, work permit with photo,

border cross card, birth cer�ficate along with a photo ID

from this list, etc…) �

3) Proof of current address within 2 months (i.e. phone or

electricity bill, lease agreement, bank statement, etc…)�

The FaithAc�on ID Card will cost $10 (cash or check only) and

will include your photo, full name, and address, date of birth,

country of origin, and expira�on date, along with the

FaithAc(on Logo.�

Nota: El programa de tarjeta de idenJficación FaithAc�on es un medio para proporcionar una tarjeta de idenJficación con foto a cualquier persona que la necesita para su uso personal. No se limita a ningún grupo de personas en parJcular.�

3)Prueba de dirección actual de los úl�mos dos meses (es decir, teléfono o facturas de electricidad, contrato de arrendamiento, estado de cuenta bancaria, etc ...)�

La Tarjeta de Iden�ficación FaithAc�on costará $10 (efec�vo o cheque solamente) e incluirá su foto, nombre completo y dirección, fecha de nacimiento, país de origen, y la fecha de vencimiento, junto con el logo�po de FaithAc(on.�

Si usted �ene un Niño Scout o conoce uno, probablemente sabe que los Boy Scouts de América ayudan a hombres jóvenes a desarrollarse como ciudadanos responsables a través de sus programas y ac�vidades al aire libre. ¡Usted puede ayudar a un Scout a aprender cómo ganarse el dinero para ir al Campamento de Verano de Scouts! ¿Cómo? Comprando una “Tarjeta de Campamento” o “Camp Card”. Esta Camp Card le da descuentos en varias �endas y restaurantes locales, cuesta $5 y la mitad del dinero recaudado se usará para proveer los fondos que enviarán a un Niño Scout al campamento de este año. Apoye a un Scout este sábado 5 y domingo 6 de mayo, y compre una “Camp

men develop as responsible ci�zens through their programs

and outdoor ac�vi�es. You can help a Scout earn his way to

Summer Scout Camp by buying a discount “Camp Card”.

These cards cost only $5 and give you discounts to local

stores and restaurants throughout the year. 50% of the

money raised goes to funding a Scout’s camping

experience. Please support a Scout next Saturday May 5th

and Sunday May 6th

by buying a “Camp Card” at the Scout

table located at the gathering Space of the Church.A Scout

run again this year. This is an ecumenical

outreach to the community as a sign of

our Prolife commitment. We are asked

to par�cipate by making a $5 dona�on to

add your name, family name, in honor or

in memory of a loved one to the list, which will be printed in the

newspaper on Mother’s Day. The forms available aèr all the

Masses next weekend. Please stop in the Gathering Space before

or aèr Mass to add your endorsement of the Pro Life cause.
