CHOOSE SOUTHAMPTON:INCREASING TRUST
Do we trust what we see on the Internet? Law lecturer Dr Sophie Stalla-Bourdillon is part of a major European Union project, which is examining questions of online trust and trustworthiness. She is exploring how the law can contribute to increasing trust among users of the Internet and, generally, what drives this trust.
The three year EU Framework Seven project Operational Trustworthiness Enabling Technologies (OPTET) has partners in France, Germany, Belgium and Greece. It is examining cyber security of critical infrastructure, and issues surrounding an electronic monitoring initiative involving elderly and disabled people in Norway.

CHOOSE SOUTHAMPTON:CHANGE THE WORLDThe Role of Law in Safeguarding Health: National and Global PerspectivesLaw and regulation play crucial roles in safeguarding the health of individuals and populations. Scholars in Southampton Law School work with colleagues across the world, examining law and policy and considering ethical reforms to assure the conditions in which people can be healthy.
Lecturer in Law, and Deputy Director of the Centre for Health, Ethics and Law (HEAL), Dr. A.M. Viens, is currently involved in various policy, training and practice activities with leading health governance bodies. As well as working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Chatham House Working Group on Antibiotic Delinkage, he is helping develop training and education materials at the World Health Organization’s Department of Ethics and Social Determinants.
Professor John Coggon joined HEAL in 2012. He is a world class scholar whose main focus is on public health law, where he explores questions about the State’s role in protecting and promoting population health, and the tensions this raises with individual autonomy. He recently published an acclaimed book entitled What Makes Health Public? and led an international workshop, co-organised with colleagues at McGill University, Canada, debating political philosophy and public health law and policy. Alongside this work John researches health care law more generally, including assisted dying and end of life decision-making, organ donation policy and mental capacity law.
Scholars in HEAL, like those in other research centres in the Law School, have a strong commitment to developing world-leading research that can be brought into teaching as well as public and policy engagement.

Southampton Law School offers a choice of five undergraduate programmes with excellent teaching, and opportunities to develop professional and employability skills
COURSE OVERVIEW
18
Course structure
We offer five programmes at undergraduate level. All include the core legal modules you will need to obtain your professional exemptions. LLB Law students can choose from a wide range of optional modules to reflect your interests and career ambitions. Our respected LLB Maritime Law programme specialises in that area.
You can also study LLB European Legal Studies or International Legal Studies, which feature a full academic year at a leading university overseas.
Graduates can opt to study an LLB over two years on our accelerated programme, which also includes our JD pathway option that is tailored to students wishing to practice in Canada.*
All programmes offer a final year compulsory dissertation; your chance to work independently and creatively on a substantial project. This is an outstanding feature of the final year of our LLB programmes and is highly valued by employers. Some of the work produced by our students is of publishable quality.
How will you learn?
Our teaching has received the highest-possible rating by the UK Government’s Quality Assurance Agency. Our academic staff are experienced lecturers and passionate about their subjects. You will learn through lectures, seminars and tutorials, group work and online methods and your work will be assessed through exams, assignments and presentations. We will provide written feedback on your work in all courses.
As a Southampton law student, you will have access to the largest law library on the south coast of England with more than 55,000 legal volumes. You will also benefit from the latest information technology and online learning resources.
Mooting
All of our first year students learn how to make and present legal arguments in a moot, an imaginary court case in which participants present oral arguments in relation to a specific area of the law in a formal setting before a judge. There will be plenty of opportunities to practise your skills in national and international competitions. Our activities are supported by local judges and barristers and generously supported by several regional chambers.
Pro Bono Initiatives
The Southampton Law School is unique in offering a wide range of pro bono opportunities for LLB students. These projects are open to any undergraduate who wants to give up their time voluntarily to help others and, at the same time, develop valuable legal skills.
All projects are supported and assisted by experienced Southampton Law School academic staff, who work collaboratively with local and national law firms. Pro bono work is proving extremely popular with aspiring barristers and solicitors, as you will learn and practise essential transferable skills that will be vital in your career.
Employability Skills Programme
The Employability Skills Programme has been running in the Law School for fifteen years and offers students a unique opportunity to develop key transferable skills, relevant to those considering a career within and outside the legal profession.
It is an excellent opportunity for students to network and make important contacts in the legal and business communities.
Students get the opportunity to attend a range of presentations and interactive workshops led by professionals in the legal and business professions. Many of the contributors are Alumni now in senior positions in regional and global law firms and organisations. There is also the opportunity to attend Court visits and Employment and Social Security Tribunals.
Curriculum Innovation Programme
We have introduced CIP modules to offer students flexibility in their learning, and provide the opportunity to explore subjects outside of their discipline.
Options include language courses, sustainability in the local and global environment, economics with experiments, social enterprise, and health policy and economics.
Please note that the availability of optional modules may change from time to time, and prospective applicants should visit our website for full and up to date information.

Admissions policy1. The University of Southampton will:
– aim to recruit the most talented students, irrespective of background, who we believe have the potential to succeed on our challenging programmes and prepare them to be confident citizens and potential leaders in an increasingly globalised environment
– attract applicants who enjoy the challenge of forward thinking, the excitement of research-led teaching, and the high standards of learning and teaching which we set ourselves
– foster a diverse learning community in which students will meet people from different cultures, enhancing their skills of critical reasoning,
teamwork and communication, and thus preparing them for successful participation in their chosen careers
2. The University is committed to providing an admissions process that ensures fairness, transparency and equal opportunities within the legal framework of the United Kingdom. The University welcomes applications from candidates regardless of their background and aims to eliminate discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, nationality, ethnic or national origin, sexual orientation, political beliefs, religious beliefs or practices, disability, marital status, family circumstances, parental/carer status, spent criminal convictions, age, or any other inappropriate ground.

Tuition fees and funding
The University will set fees for 2015/16 when the government establishes limits for tuition fees. For 2014/15, the University set the tuition fee at £9,000, but we offer a large number of generous fee waivers and bursaries for eligible students.
For students from lower income families, these financial packages will be based on household income details supplied to us by the Student Loans Company.
Your tuition fee may cover compulsory course costs, such as field trips and laboratory clothing; however a contribution may be necessary towards
certain elements. Please check with the Admissions team for more details.
Visit our website for the latest information on tuition fees before you submit your UCAS form for entry in the 2015/16 academic year. Students who have applied for a deferred place in 2014/15 will be eligible for the 2015/16 tuition fees and support.
If you are a UK student starting a higher education course in 2014/15, you can apply for loans to help pay for both fees and maintenance. For more details, visit www.southampton.ac.uk/money
