What does the University Library (UL) have to offer you - apart from the print and digital collection of academic resources?

This brochure details our services, like customized training, tours and workshops. We emphasize the role of the subject librarian as the contact person with you and your faculty. We explain terms like RefWorks, RePub, open access publishing, collaboratories and information literacy. The subject librarians are the UL’s collection specialists. They are assigned to a particular discipline or faculty and are responsible for the academic information services. Together, they ensure that the UL’s services are tailored as well as possible to your needs and the needs of your students.

The subject librarian is thus your direct contact person in the UL. They will be happy to set up (introductory) meetings with you if you have any questions or requests.

You can also go to the subject librarian for

• acquisition suggestions and questions about the UL’s collection and about subject-specific literature;

• advice on research-enabling software like RefWorks;• customized training for your students on efficient

searching and on finding subject-specific information.

The subject librarians introduce themselves to you on the following pages.

“You can come to me for non-subject specific information resources. Think of reference works, language courses and information about publishing, studying and research.

In addition, I am the head of the User Support Department. You can come to me with comments and questions about the UL’s services, areas of the UL, PR, the UL website and other issues that concern the use of the UL.”

“Ensuring the availability of relevant information resources for education and research and stimulating their proper use are central in my role as subject librarian.

Thus, an up-to-date electronic and print collection was developed in consultation with RSM’s faculty. Furthermore, I help researchers with using resources, and I assist in setting up notification services. You can also come to me with questions about research-enabling software like RefWorks, Web of Science and RePub.”

“As a subject librarian, I ensure that you have the right books, articles, working papers and databases available for study, instruction or research.

This service consists of supplying adequate access to relevant resources and literature for Erasmus School of Economics.

In addition, I advise the faculty and provide support and training focused on searching for, finding, selecting, validating and applying scholarly information. If you have questions about this, you can always contact me.”

“I act as a liaison officer within the UL for the Faculty of History and Arts. I ensure that the faculty has access to all desired information products and services.

The four activities that I consider central are building up the digital and print collection, making these accessible, organizing and offering training and solving concrete information problems.

The development of knowledge within the faculty covers widely diverse disciplines. My starting point, therefore, is that the requests of the various disciplines must come first; the library should then respond to these. This approach stands or falls with communication between the subject librarian and individual faculty members. This is an important focal point for me. Building up the historical-didactic collection, in collaboration with the Centre for Historical Culture, gives me, as a former history teacher, extra satisfaction. I enjoy providing training for this same reason.

“The function of the subject librarian can be compared to that of the account manager within a business.

As a Law subject librarian, I ensure that staff and students of the Faculty of Law have access to relevant information resources for research and education purposes, both in print and electronic form. In addition, I gladly provide instruction to students on searching in juridical resources.

Staying in contact with international colleagues is very important in order to supply the law faculty with the right information. My participation in the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) is therefore very useful for staying up to date on developments worldwide.

“You can contact me with all your questions about academic resources in the social sciences.

You can also come to me with acquisition suggestions for the UL collection, for customized instructions, or for help with literature research and reviews. In addition, I coordinate the UL portal on information literacy—an important academic skill. Within EUR’s Erasmus Studio, I’m involved with (research into) scholarly collaboration and publishing.”

“As subject librarian for philosophy and psychology, I offer a wide variety of services.

Do you want to help yourself and your students to use scholarly literature as efficiently as possible? Ask me for custom-made information literacy training.

In addition, staff and students from all faculties can contact me for help with using RefWorks, an online reference manager. Also, as a member of the Data Team (EDSC), I can explain how to find financial data like stock quotes, annual report information, mergers and bonuses.”

The UL strives to offer users both inside and outside the university unrestricted access to EUR’s academic output. Starting from the 1st of January 2011 EUR and Erasmus MC researchers are obliged to submit their final author’s version in digital format to the EUR Repository, RePub.

Through RePub, you can make your articles, working papers, dissertations, conference reports and research reports accessible.

What are the advantages of this?

• Articles are easily retrievable worldwide and are demonstrably consulted and cited more often.

• Uploading publications to RePub is quick, easy and free.• RePub takes copyright and agreements with publishers into

account.• Each publication gets a permanent URL, a “handle.” You can

use this as a reference link in your reference list or on your personal website.

• RePub guarantees that the publication will remain available; we have a partnership with the Royal Library’s e-depot.

Visit the RePub website for more information.

RefWorks:manage your literature references

RefWorks is a web-based reference manager with which you can easily save, manage, share and export literature references online.

With RefWorks you can also:

• import literature references from search engines or databases (Web of Science, sEURch, Science Direct, etc.)

• enrich literature details with your own keywords, arrange them in folders, remove duplicates, and search

• easily cite literature in a Word document and automatically generate a bibliography according to the citation style of your choice.

The UL provides workshops on using RefWorks (by registration). You can also do the practical online course, ‘RefWorks.’ You will find an overview of all the options on the University Library’s website.

Are you planning on working together on research with scholars spread across different locations around the country? A collaboratory, or a virtual work environment, can help.

The UL offers the online course Online Scholarly Collaboration on its website. This course covers things like when and how to work together on research, which platform to choose for a virtual work environment and how to set this up. Furthermore, you will learn everything you need to know about arranging permissions, managing text versions and employing communication tools like wikis, blogs, chat, calendar and web conferencing.

Notification services (alerts)

The options for being automatically notified of the latest developments within a discipline have increased enormously.

A few examples of alerts are

• an e-mail alert with the table of contents of your favourite journal;• an e-mail alert with the latest results of a particular search in a database;• a citation alert whenever your article is cited;• an RSS feed with the newest publications in your discipline.

You can create similar alerts yourself in the large number of databases to which the UL offers access. The possibilities are effective and time saving. For help, please contact your subject librarian.

The UL offers customized training. This training is broader than the introduction to the library and delves deeper into the skills needed for searching for, finding, processing and analyzing information within a particular discipline.

Examples of customized training are:

• a workshop on discipline-specific databases;• an instruction related to a search assignment;• training in developing a search strategy based on a research question.

Of course, there are other options. You can discuss these with your subject librarian. You can request customized training through your subject librarian or through the Virtual Desk.

On the Research Matters Portal, you will find information about academic research and the publication process that follows.

The portal provides information about:

• Open access publishing: everything on publishing and making the output of academic research freely accessible through a repository like RePub.

• Quality indicators for measuring impact, including the journal impact factor and researcher impact.

• Tools and software related to aspects of the entire research process. Think of collaboration software like SharePoint and a reference manager like RefWorks.

• Online courses by the University Library like ‘The basics of scholarly publishing’ and ‘Online scholarly collaboration’.

Also available: information about current projects on impact monitoring, subsidies, doing literature surveys and discipline-specific information and/or information from faculties about publishing and impact measurement.

EDSC offers access to financial and social science databases. The Data Team, a group of specialists, works within EDSC. They support EUR students and staff using these databases.

The Data Team offers EUR students and staff

• individual support, presenting relevant databases and helping with creating a search strategy;• workshops in the use of the UL’s various financial databases;• custom-made lectures that prepare students to collect data for assignments;• the website ‘Get started’: an overview of different sorts of data, the accompanying databases

and their manuals;• online response to questions (through the ‘Ask the Data Team a question’ button).

A number of databases, including Datastream and Bloomberg, can be consulted in the UL only.
