Ukrainian immigrants to the US between 1870 and 1914 because of their familiarity with Poles whole lived and continue to live in Polish Downtown, a nearby neighborhood.
● The area became heavily populated after a train station was established along Paulina ave in 1895. It was decommissioned in the 1964.
● Over the past half century it has remained a middle class neighborhood, mainly inhabited by older Eastern European people and their families.
● It remains the center of the Chicagoland Ukrainian community and political efforts to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine because of strong ethnic nationalism and religiosity amongst Ukrainian-Americans.
