In 1942 the Israelis attacked "Al Birwa" the village where Mahmoud
Darwish was born and in 1948, his family was obliged to leave to
Lebanon and at the age of six he became a refugee. A year later,
the family returned, but their village had disappeared; instead, a
new Jewish settlement stood there. The family was expelled to
another village. After he graduated from high school in 1959, he
moved to Haifa and worked for a newspaper. He published his first
book of poetry a year later and in the following ten years , he
became the editor of his newspaper. He continued writing, too, and
in 1969, he received the Lotus Prize from the Union of Afro Asian
writers. He also used to travel without a travel permit to give
public reading for his poetry which made him feel very pleased.
Over the years, he has published more than 30 books, mostly about
Palestine. Many poems have become popular songs. A number of poems
have also recently become available in English, and so they are
helping the world understand the Palestinian situation
better.
