Background

1. Welcoming banquet Etiquette

To welcome your clients, a banquet is the most common practice in the business world. Welcoming banquets are more formal than usual feasts you have with your family or friends. So you should dress properly. Men should wear suits and ties. Ladies should wear suit-dresses. One point to stress is that women should not wear trousers or short skirts when attending a banquet. Dresses that cover the knees are considered the best. And it is advisable to pick up your clients at the hotel and take them to the place where you will have a banquet. This is a polite way to show your respect to your clients.

Page 12: Unit 3 Making a Speech

Background

2.Etiquette for business introduction

At a welcoming banquet, in some cases, you are expected to introduce someone or being introduced. Introductions can be very difficult and awkward situations if not handled properly, but they are extremely important in all business situations. Remembering people’s names is an art, and you should find your own ways to learn this art, but here are some rules that can make the first moments in your situation successful.

In general social situations, a man is introduced to the woman first, but in business situations, the highest ranking person is introduced first. The host of a gathering should meet, greet and introduce guests.

In formal settings, always use Mr., Mrs., Miss or Ms. If the person you are introducing has an official title, you should use that official title, such as Dr. Morgan Smith, or Senator William Brady.

Page 13: Unit 3 Making a Speech

Background

Often times the person you are being introduced to will say, “You may call me Bill”. In this case, he or she has left it up to you as to how you would like to proceed. If you continue to use his or her surname, and he or she insists otherwise, it is best to use the given name.

If the person introducing you gets your name wrong, simply say, “Thank you, but my name is Karen Miller, not Karen Smith.” If you meet someone at a gathering you had previously met, DO NOT say, “Remember me?” Instead politely re-introduce yourself.

Page 14: Unit 3 Making a Speech

4 Discussion

Discuss the following questions with your partner and report your answers to the class.

* Have you ever made a presentation? Describe your experiences.

* What kind of preparations do you usually make before making a

presentation?

* How will you calm yourself when you make a presentation?

* What makes a good delivery of a presentation?
