Hazard is the potential to cause harm; risk on theother hand is the likelihood of harm (in definedcircumstances, and usually qualified by some

statement of the severity of the harm).

The Role- BDE are experts in safe disposal of unexploded ordnance, such as mines, shells and bombs that may have been left on thebattlefield after a conflict.

The Skills-Once you have been selected for bomb disposal youundertake a 4 week course, which will teach you to recognise varioustypes of bombs and different kinds of ammunition, make them safeand then dispose of them. BDEs are also trained in counter terroristsearches and uncovering of illegal arms and explosives.

There are a large number of different hazards in the bomb disposalunit. I think one of the main Hazards is your equipment, if yourequipment is faulty or not in full working order there is a chance thatthe outcome of using this equipment in the field could be fatal. The

equipment you are using must be looked at to make sure thateverything is in full working order. A second Hazard could bemachinery the bomb disposal have a wide range of different toolsand equipment that they can use. One of the tools available to them isthe bar mine which is a anti-tank mine which is used to restrict theenemys freedom of movement, if this mine being used is faulty or

havent been fitted with the right fuse the effects could be fatal again. For number three another hazard could be equipment again but thistime personal equipment which all troops are given when fighting onthe front line. One of the major item which all troop carry is thepersonal role radio (PPR) I think the PPR is one the most important

Item's because when looking for any bombs, shells etc. in the fieldcommunication would be one of the most important factors to takeinto account and of the PPR fails while in the field the results of lack

of communication could lead to fatalities while on a mission. Thefinal hazard to take into account could be pedestrians in thesurrounding area that you are operating in . If you cant defuse abomb or shell you may be to result to detonating the device and to dothat you need to get all personnel and pedestrians out of the blast

zone to avoid any damage to buildings or death of any troops orpedestrians.

The possibility of suffering harm or loss or dangerit is also a factor, thing, element, or courseinvolving uncertain danger to someone for

    something around the area.

To minimise the risk of using faulty equipment before you go toundertake a mission you should check your equipment fully to maketo sure that everything is in full working order. Another thing youcould do to minimise the risk of using faulty equipment in the field isbefore being issued to the men of the BDU it should under go a full

maintenance check to make sure its working to the highest standard. One of the hazards that I talked about is the PPR this is the radio thatall men and woman use to communicate in the field. If the piece ofequipment fails the results could be catastrophic . To minimise therisk all the radios should be fully charged up and looked at to check ifall the buttons and main parts are working e.g. Headset, Microphone

etc. Machinery not working or not being handled in the correct waycould lead to fatalities. To reduce the risk all the men should be fullytrained and under go a wide range of tests and scenarios to see of theyare ready and have the right skills and ability to use them in the fieldwithout any pressure. Also all

Mines that are going to be used should be check over for any damagesand faults with the equipment. Another hazard would be needed todetonate a bomb because you cannot defuse it and having people in

the surrounding area. To help minimise this risk the BDU should geteverything out of the surrounding area including there own man, people who live near or any cattle in the area. Before they detonatethe device they should do a full perimeter check to see if everybody isout of the blast zone and when everybody is out of the surroundingarea they can contain with detonating the device. One more majorthing to take into account would be there body armour andequipment all troops should be fully equipped before going out on amission or patrol therefore they should check to see if they have theyhave everything before they head out, and everything must be storedand kept in the right place because then when you need something in

a short amount of time you know were everything is kept and you canget in without any trouble and hassle.

The Role- To control, disperse, and arrest civilians who are involvedin a riot, demonstration, or protest. Law enforcement officers orsoldiers have long used non-lethal weapons such as batons and whipsto disperse crowds and detain rioters.

The Skills-Have special training to deal with large crowds and alsohave a wide range of special equipment for use in a large scale riotand dealing with large groups.

There are all sorts of different hazards in the riot squad. One of themain hazards would be faulty equipment . The riot squad have a widerange of different equipment they carry riot shields and protectivehelmets these are to protect the user from direct melee attacks and

hurled objects such as bottles and stones. If the equipment forexample a shield with only one handle or maybe a few cracks in itfrom recent riot that shield is not going to provide the user with fullcontrol over the rioters. Another hazard could be incorrect training forall different riots or when large crowds need to be controlled. If somemembers of the team are not correctly trained this could lead to lack

of communication and not coordinating effectively and maybe lose ofcontrol of the rioters. For number three the hazard could be incorrectinformation about the riot you are going to go into. If the informationis not right the riot squad could take the wrong equipment into theriot could be more serious then they had thought and the result of this

Could be losing control over the riot. A final hazard in the riot squadcould be lack of communication between the squad members while inthe heat of the riot. Not talking to each other while in a riot could leadto serious consequences such as not being able to control the riot formaybe even some of the squad getting left behind and being injured.

To minimise the risk of going in to a riot with faulty or brokenequipment all the equipment should be check before or after a riot tosee If any of the shields or protective gear is broken and if so itshould be replace as soon as possible, also the equipment should be

stores neat and tidy somewhere out of harms way and also an areayou can easy access quickly if needed to. Another factor was troopsbeing incorrectly trained to reduce the risk of this all members of theriot squad should be put under testing to keep there skill at a all timehigh and also put under regular training to maintain there skills.Going into a riot not knowing the details about it could have serious

results. To reduce the risk of doing this the police force should firstgather information about the riot such as How many people areinvolved? Have they got any weapons? Etc. I think they should accessthe riot on a scale to 1 to 10 1 being the lowest and 10 being thehighest and they should proceeded from there and decide what to do

What to do next and what equipment they should take into the riot. One of the other hazards was lack of communication between the riotsquad not talking to each other while in the riot could lead to serious

results while in the field. To reduce the risk of this they should alwaysstay aware of there surrounds and always keep an eye on each otherwhile In the field to avoid any bad results. They should be talking toeach other about what to do next to get a good result from the riot andgo home without any bad reports.
