LWL FLat Plan Annotation

 When you’re making a magazine, you compile the images into a Flat Plan, allowing you to have an overview of the whole magazine.  The first chapter is all about shame where they review the whole magazine. Chapter 2 is for competitions and promotions to interact with the reader. Chapter Three is where they discuss themes of uncommon interest inspired from the film Shame. Chapter four is where they review the latest films. Chapter five is where they explore film culture. Chapter six where they discuss films of the future.  The pages are broken apart by their contrasting colour, different fonts and large layout.  Chapter 1 ­ These designs are consistent, Black text on a white background Chapter 2 ­  Is the introductory to themselves as a unique magazine company. Chapter 3 ­  To discuss themes and uncommon interests about the film Shame. Chapter 4 ­ This is a feature that is common amongst every film mag ­ The Review Pages. Chapter 5 ­ A large illustration on the top with a lot of text at the bottom. This makes the reader interact with the book, involving them.  Chapter 6 ­ To be able to track future releases of the magazine and some extra info + Illustrations.   LWLies is curated, it chooses the most important film of the month and tells the reader why it’s important. They aren’t about ‘what’s new‘ Most of the important stuff is at the beginning, where the reviews and opinions is at the back of the magazine. The images within the magazine are either their own Illustrations and the photographs are originals taken by themselves.  

    LWLies Pages Annotation­ 

 The LWLies makes the assumption that it’s audience will understand the smart references through visuals or secret puns. They see their film puns as a way to further connect to their smart target audience. There may be a few things that they understand, for example ­  They have designed Zack Snyder’s portrait in a comic styled print, referencing his films, saying that they are all back to front like the films original graphic novels.  They have a very stylized and visual cover which would normally mean that the the text would be harder to read, except in their case, their text is still very clear to see.  Many people enjoy the directors films such as Watchmen, Suckerpunch and The Man of Steel but don’t actually know anything personal about him. The LWLies magazine has a unique approach to their content, they try and interpret inside puns and clever references that people can either enjoy and learn from. Once people realise that the magazine has intentional puns within it’s design, they will go out of their way to spot them. This could mean that they become customers after feeling rewarded by the magazines humour intelligent after finding hidden puns.  

The theme is spread across the pages, they have chosen a sammon/light pink to portray the film, I suppose it’s random for a stylish decision but it makes the pages much more appealing.  

The charts are large and very simple. The colours stay true to each of the pages relevant to the film. I quite enjoy seeing charts of information about superhero films. Its making the fantasy seem reachable.

  Chapter 1 ­ 2 Is all about the latest film news. The next section starts at screen, just before it changes to the darker pages are all the reviews.  Chapter 3 ­ 4 From Lounge to the last page is full of home entertainment, featuring competitions before taking you to the door.  The interesting pages are the Last Crusade. The cover features the front cover character with slight information. This stands out because its a two­page spread, the DPS is changed making it grr. It actually costs more to display advertisements  Total Film is about everything and anything new. The way that they work is by throwing out any old information each month and finding out what’s new, basically starting with a fresh page. It’s packed with a lot more content when it’s compared to LWLies, although LWLies information is elaborated or further explained.   Whenever I have purchased a Total Film magazine, I feel overwhelmed with the ammount of NEW information I find. This is very different from LWLies because I can sometimes read things I have already known about films and directors. I suppose that if the LWLies magazine is for harcore film fanatics, wouldn’t they know most of its information from their own research into the film? or would it count as a part of their research? I’m not too sure but it does fascinate me.
