Everyone is invited to

our monthly Chips, Dips

and Discussion time.

We will gather in the

church meeting room.

Paul Perrin will lead our

discussion. Join us Friday

June 17th at 7:00 pm.

Many of us do not like

surprises. For the most

part, I am one who does

not. Perhaps it is the

fear of the unknown or

part of our desire to al-

ways be prepared for

anything. As you know

there are all kinds of sur-

prises, and some are

harder to keep a surprise

than others. Now, even

though I would rather

avoid most surprises

there is something I think

is important for us to

realize about our calling as

God’s people. I think we

should be surprising people.

Paul demonstrates what I

mean (Romans 12: 9-21).

What would most ene-

mies expect from each

other? Probably behaviors

that are enemy-like. I would

also suspect that someone

who wrongs another is sure

their actions will be repaid

by wrong as well. Oh, but

how wonderful it would be

if we could surprise people!

Paul, I think, instructs us to

do just that. Do not repay

evil with evil—anyone can

do that! He tells us to

feed our enemies, to live peace-

ably with others and show

honor to others. Think of the

good our surprises could do.

God’s transforming love makes

us a surprising people. How

about you? How full of sur-

prises will you be?

Blessed Beyond Belief,

P.S.

Ascension Day

The day commemorating the

ascension of Jesus into

heaven from the Mount of

Olives (Acts 1:3-11), cele-

brated in the church on the

40th day after Easter.

From the Westminster Dictionary

of Theological Terms

Theological Word To Know

Are you full of surprises?

Our Social Principles: Alcohol & Other Drugs We affirm our long-standing support of abstinence from alcohol as a faithful witness to God’s liberating and redeeming love for persons. We support abstinence from the use of any illegal drugs. Alcohol and drug addiction are not simply “sin,” they are social and psychological dis-eases. Together they destroy individuals, families and communities. How is God calling you to respond?

There are a few small projects our Trustees would like to take care of this month. They have sched-uled a church work day for Satur-day, June 18th. Contact David Triggs for information about the work we will be doing.

Page 5: Under the Oak: June 2011

At our May 9th meeting, Micki Triggs gave the devotional from

The Daily Word entitled “God Will Always Stand By Me,” and

she read the reading from the missionary prayer calendar. Deli-

cious refreshments were served by Karen Gebert, and Dorene

Taylor gave our program entitled “Pentecost—A Mighty Wind.”

Thank you ladies for all that you do.

Even though we will not be having our regular meetings in June

or July, we are still moving forward with all of our projects. The Ashford Hall “Christmas in July” is still in

need of small toiletries and puzzle books (search-a-word, crossword, largeprint) for the gift bags we give

each resident. Thursday, July 14th, after Bible study, we will put the bags together; if you can help we would

appreciate it. The date for our visit is Saturday, July 16th from 2-3pm. We will meet at the church about

1:30pm to load up. We look forward to many of our church members and friends to join us.

The School of Christian Mission will be held July 18-21 at Richardson FUMC. I have registration forms

available now. If you would like to attend, please contact me at 972.255.3152, or see Ann Kent. We will

be forming a car pool.

We are confirmed at Bridgeport Lake for our annual Ladies’ Retreat on Friday, Oct. 7th and Saturday,

Oct. 8th. The cost is $55 per person; this covers your meals and lodging. The fellowship and fun are free

of charge! For more information please see Bonnie Perrin or myself.

Remember you are welcome to participate in our reading program. See our UMW Library located in the

Seekers Sunday School room. Contact Dorene Taylor or myself for more information. Our next unit

meeting will be August 8, 2011 at 7pm. Hope you have a great and blessed summer.

The United Methodist Men held their monthly meeting on May 19th. Our meeting was called to order after our usual time of food and fellowship—a special thanks to those who provided food. Please know that our group is still accepting your canned food items for our UMM, umm good basket each third Sunday of the month. Also, we were able to continue our financial support of Irving Cares through June.

We voted to contribute to the Boy Scouts of America as well. Finally, concerning our business, our current bal-ance is $7,582.24. Rev John Fletcher led a devotional over Matthew 25:1-13, Jesus’ parable of the Ten Bridesmaids. The discus-sion was timely as our meeting came before a bold prediction of the judgment day on May 21st. We talked about the call Jesus gives us to be prepared, and that our preparation for that day is related to our sense of obedience and faithfulness to God. We need not be worried about dates or signs of the end of the world. We had a special presentation during our meeting. Steve Perrin presented a video recording of our church’s ground breaking ceremony at our current location before it was built in 1961. This year marks the 50th anniver-sary of our congregation’s building and our name of Oak Haven. Steve put the video on DVD and made sure our church has a copy for its records. Thanks, Steve. We will not meet as a group this month or in July. Our meetings will pick up again in August.

MANCHESTER, England (UMNS) — A con-

versation between the chaplaincy team at

Royal Bolton Hospital, which includes the

Rev. Kathleen LaCamera, a United Method-

ist pastor, and the hospital's palliative care

consultant has resulted in "Dying for a

Laugh," a film in which six comedians joke

and reflect on the subject of death and dying.

Now available online, the film was pro-

duced by LaCamera, also a filmmaker and

journalist, and her husband, former BBC

religion TV producer Chris Loughlin, as a

way to “normalize” conversation about

death in support of “Dying Matters

Awareness Week.”

OMAHA, Neb. (UMNS) — Grammy-winner Sheryl Crow lent a hand at one of the United

Methodist Big Garden sites on May 12. Crow was in town to perform a concert that evening.

The environmentally minded artist helped kids from Camp Fire USA plant vegetables and flow-

ers."We are renters of the planet, and my mother taught me you leave a campground nicer

than you found it. That's my philosophy about the planet," Crow said.

Established in 2005 through a Community Food Project grant from the USDA, the Big Gar-

den seeks to teach residents how to grow nutritious food and encourages healthy eating habits

and physical activity through the creation of urban and rural community gardens. There are

currently 29 garden sites throughout the metro-Omaha area as well as a sister project, the Big

Rural Garden in southeast Nebraska.

WASHINGTON (UMNS) —The

United Nations Foundation’s Noth-

ing But Nets campaign announced

May 10 that it had reached its goal of sending lifesaving, anti-malaria bed nets to protect families

who had fled violence in Côte d’Ivoire, with contributions totaling $350,000 from grass-roots

supporters. The goal was reached in one month, with the help of a $50,000 donation from the

Union for Reform Judaism.

“We are thrilled to have reached the goal of sending bed nets to protect Ivoirian families in

the U.N. refugee camp in Liberia so quickly,” said Elizabeth Gore, a United Methodist and the

NEW YORK (UMNS) — Rapper Lil Jon won

another $40,000 for the United Methodist

Children’s Home on the May 1 episode of "The

Celebrity Apprentice", bringing the total he has

earned for his designated charity to $80,000.

A statement on the Decatur, Ga., home’s

the effort he has put forth on the show to win

this money that will help us continue to serve

children and families in need.”

On the May 8 episode of the show, the Chil-

A Blast From the Past

Talkin’ ‘bout my generation People talk a lot about the differences between today’s young people and those of previous

generations. Often these comments highlight negative aspects of the attitudes, behaviors

and commitments of our young people. Obviously, there are elements of today’s youth

culture that should be addressed. However, the same can be said of every generation. It is

true; there are things about our young people today that many of us may not understand or

appreciate. It can seem like they are totally different than the way

we are, or the way we used to be.

Keep in mind, though, that the world our young people live in is

different, too. There are struggles and circumstances many of our

young people face that were unheard of in previous generations. As

adults and spiritual leaders and teachers—though our young people

can teach us a thing or two as well—our prayers for our youth

should not be that they could be more like us. Instead, listen to

what they need prayer for, and pray that they, and all of us, would

become more like Christ. This kind of listening includes a willingness
