Everyone is invited to

our monthly Chips, Dips

and Discussion time.

We will gather in the

church meeting room.

Paul Perrin will lead our

discussion. Join us Friday

Oct 15 at 7:00 pm.

Maybe I’m generalizing;

maybe not. For most

people, though, church is

supposed to be neat and

nice—everything in or-

der. Now, we can han-

dle the occasional bulle-

tin misprint or an off-

note here and there

from the choir. The pas-

tor looses her/his place

every now and then, but

that’s okay. However, in

the event something

pressing or tragic needs

to be shared please (do

tell) let us pray for you.

Just make sure you share it

at the appropriate time and

keep it to a sentence or

two. Let’s not get carried

away with ourselves. What

an unfortunate attitude to

have!

Life isn’t always nice and

neat; it can get a little

messy. Consequently, in

our blessed, messy lives our

faith stands to get messy,

too. Shouldn’t we be able

to share that messiness with

other messy livers? The

Church should be the first

place someone can find an

ear, a prayer or support—not

judgment, an impatient re-

sponse or belittling. Also, the

last thing someone in a messy

spot needs is someone else to

say, “If you need anything call

me.” Instead, remembering

Jesus’ words in Matthew

25:40, you be the person to

say, “I’m calling; what do you

need?”

Blessed Beyond Belief,

Laity

From the Greek word laikos

meaning “belonging to the

people.” This is a term used

for any person who is not an

ordained clergy.

Theological Word To Know

Messy Living

Liturgy comes from the Greek word meaning “work of

the people.” For us, a liturgist is someone who helps lead

our corporate worship time (our work). Each Sunday our

liturgist welcomes everyone to worship, leads our call to

worship and opening prayer and reads to us the selected

Scripture readings. We would like you to consider being a

liturgist at Oak Haven. Yes, you can!

Here are 3 good reasons why you can:

1. It’s once a month

2. Readings & information are provided before hand

3. We show you how to do it

Here are 3 good reasons why you should:

1. It’s once a month & all info is provided before hand

2. It’s a great way to connect to Sunday’s lesson

3. Our guests and new members get to see more of

us working in ministry together

So, what do you think? Our worship time is a meaningful

part of our Christian faith, and your participation would

only add to it. Please contact John Fletcher for more infor-

mation. First one to respond gets to choose their Sunday!

At our September meeting our new

UMW directories were distributed. I

would like to thank Rev John Fletcher

and Micki Triggs for such a great and

unique directory.

We are getting very close to our

Ladies’ Retreat. The date is set for Fri-

day, October 1 and Saturday, October 2

at beautiful Lake Bridgeport. If you can

make it, and we hope that you can, please

see Bonnie Perrin or myself. The cost is

$55 person for a bed for one night, 3

delicious meals and the fun and fellowship

are free. There will be a carpool leaving

the church around 3pm Friday and we

will return after the noon meal on Satur-

day.

Also, coming in October is the

North Texas Annual Conference UMW

meeting held at Dallas First United Meth-

odist Church. There will be a carpool

available for this meeting. The date for

the meeting is Saturday, October 16; we will

inform you of the time our carpool will leave.

We hope that as many of you can attend as

possible. This is the first meeting of

our newly formed Metro District,

formerly known as the Dallas-

Denton District.

Our next unit meeting will be

on Monday, October 11 at 7pm at

the church. We invite you all to

attend. In the meantime don’t forget

about a few of our ongoing projects:

•Campbell’s Soup labels for Dal-

las Bethlehem Center

•Current year magazines, puz-

zles, games, etc for the residents at Ashford Hall

The United Methodist Men

held their monthly meeting on

Thursday, September 16th.

After the opening prayer and

reading of the purpose state-

ment the group enjoyed a deli-

cious dinner. UMM president

G.W. Kennemer offered a

devotional from The Upper Room; you can get a copy of this devotional book

for free at the church foyer.

There are no changes in our financial report. The group discussed its

involvement in the Imagine No Malaria campaign. Also, the group voted and

agreed to sponsor Stephen Cooper for his upcoming Walk to Emmaus.

Please remember that the Umm, umm good basket is on display each

third Sunday of the month. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. Finally,

we are discussing this year’s Ham Smoke, scheduled for November 18-20.

We will need everyone’s help to ensure a successful event. Our next meeting

is October 21; we hope to see you guys then!

Question: What is this guy doing that you could

be doing for your community?

You may think you know, but find out for sure in

next month’s edition of Under the Oak.

MADISON, N.J. (UMNS) — Josephine Forman

was so dedicated to preserving the history of

The United Methodist Church that she fought

for years to save what she considered to be the

important records of the denomination’s South-

west Texas Annual Conference. Now the late

church archivist is being remembered through

the Josephine Forman Dedicated Fund of the

United Methodist Commission on Archives and

History.

Income from the gift will be used for the

training of conference archivists, with a small

portion of the principal given each year as a

scholarship for a person of color training to be

an archivist, says the Rev. Robert Williams, the

commission's top executive. The Society of

American Archivists has consulted with the

commission on the project.

LONDON (UMNS) — The president of the Methodist Conference, the Rev. Alison Tomlin,

joined other church leaders in greeting Pope Benedict XVI during his four-day state visit to the

United Kingdom. Tomlin was presented to the Pontiff on Sept. 17 at Westminster Abbey dur-

ing a celebration of evening prayer with the Archbishop of Canterbury. “The Catholic Church

has been more ecumenically engaged in this country than in other countries,” Tomlin said. “It

would be good if we could build on that.”

VISTA, Calif. (UMNS) — Outreach Magazine this week released its annual lists of the 100 largest and

100 fast-growing Protestant churches in the U.S. Among the largest were two United Methodist con-

gregations: Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kan., ranked 62 with an attendance of 7,702; and

Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas ranked 93 with an attendance of 5,737. Three United

Methodist churches were included among the fastest growing: Morning Star Church in O’Fallon, Mo,

ranked 61; Harvest Church in Byron, Ga., ranked 76; and again Highland Park in Dallas ranked 83.

The 2010 “Largest” list includes churches with an attendance of more than 5,500. The largest church,

according to the magazine, is Lakewood Church in Houston with an attendance of 43,500. The “Fastest

-Growing” list includes churches with attendance greater than 1,000; a numerical gain of 250 or more;

and a percentage gain of at least 3 percent. Rankings for fastest growing are determined by factoring

both percentage growth and numerical gain. More information, including how to order the complete

list, is available at OutreachMagazine.com.

NEW ORLEANS (UMTV) — For more

than 150 years, First and Grace United

Methodist churches sat just a mile apart

but their congregations rarely had any

contact. Hurricane Katrina changed that.

Members of Grace left their heavily dam-

aged building and merged. The newly

formed “First Grace” has quadrupled at-

tendance, and longtime members say the

marriage could not be better. The Rev.

Shawn Moses Anglim describes the suc-

cessful partnership as, “the rainbow after

The World in the Palm of Our Hands—Susan Stewart Hello Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

How grand to be a chosen people, a royal priesthood, bondservants to the Most

High God, called for His purpose, to do His work on earth! We are the body of

Christ. We are His eyes, ears, hands, feet, heart, but particularly during the month of

harvest, His voice in the tradition of the prophet Micah, on a mission to call attention

to those who are victims of injustice, living in poverty.

This month God offers us an opportunity to be global missionaries; every single

one of us. If you think you are too old, too young, or too busy to be a missionary, you

are mistaken. Right here, right now, right where you are, you have an opportunity to

not only save a life, but change the world. Will you choose to be a voice for God?

Currently there are 1.2 BILLION people in the world trying to survive on less that

$1.25 a day. How many is that? Well if you added the number of people living in the

United States, Russia, Mexico, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and the United Kingdom

combined you would still be only about halfway to 1.2 billion. Jesus tells us,

“Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these,

you did not do it to Me.”

On 10*10*10 we have an opportunity to join 100 million Christians around the

world in prayer and promise for the poor. Micah 2010 is a special campaign to focus

on the promise to the poor, ten years after nations around the world committed to

halve global poverty by 2015. As Christians we want to declare God's heart for the

poor and we want to remind our leaders that action to halve poverty is worth every

effort. To forget the poor is to forget Jesus. But with God, nothing is impossible!

On 10*10*10, lift up your hands and voices on behalf of those too helpless to do so.

As a way to align our piety with

that of the larger church we will
