Newsletter Term 2, Week 8 14 June 2016 Principal’s Message Gold Assembly This Thursday 16 th of June we invite our community to join us for our next formal Gold Assembly. In excess of thirty students will be recognised for their hard work, perseverance and for upholding our school values. Whether students are receiving their level one gold badge or have progressed somewhat further than that, each recipient can feel very proud of their efforts. The assembly is also an ideal opportunity for our school to showcase the talents and expertise of our students and staff in the performing arts. This Thursday will be no exception. Our choir and school band will be performing items and both groups have been working very hard ahead of these performances. All students receiving gold level badges will be invited to morning tea with me on Monday 27 th of June. P&C Meeting The next P&C Meeting will take place in the staffroom at 7:00pm on Monday, 20 th June. Traditionally, during the winter months attendance at our monthly meetings tends to drop off as the cold evenings make the prospect of leaving a warm home somewhat less enticing. Please make the effort to come if you are able. At this meeting a number of important P&C initiatives such as the upcoming trivia night fundraiser are going to be discussed while staff are looking forward to presenting Tell Them From Me survey data in addition to our updated Gifted & Talented policy. School Attendance It’s inevitable that illness impacts upon students during the winter months. As such we can normally expect to see absenteeism rise to accommodate colds and flu like symptoms. However, a growing number of students in our school are recording periodic absences that are far in excess of what might reasonably be expected. Additionally, too many students are consistently late to school of a morning, frequently missing valuable learning time. Every absence counts. be times when students are required to be away from school for a number of different reasons. Please make school a priority. Unanderra Public School are aiming at 100% attendance in each of our classrooms, each and every day of the week. Have a great week,

Gavin Hoy Relieving Principal

Congratulations to Tameka B and Jordan L who competed and won their heat in the NAIDOC Public Speaking Challenge this week! The competition was held at Wollongong High and they competed against some tough competition from other primary schools in the area. Their topic was the 2016 NAIDOC theme, 'Songlines: The living narrative of our nation'. They will now go on to the next combined network final to be held at Ulladulla High School at the end of July.

Congratulations again, Tameka and Jordan and good luck in the next round. Ms Prior, Teacher Librarian & Public Speaking Co-ordinator

This year our school is once again supporting the work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, by holding a book stall and a sausage sizzle as part of our NAIDOC celebrations on Thursday June 30, 2016. Due to the generosity of our school community at last year’s book stall, we do not require any donations of books, as we have plenty left over. To take part in the book stall students will need to bring along a gold coin donation to purchase a second hand book to take home. The gold coin donation will be given to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, who works to put books in the hands of children and families in remote Indigenous communities across Australia. Students may also wear the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags (black, yellow, red, green, blue, white) on the day. We look forward to your support as we contribute to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s efforts. Unanderra Public School, Aboriginal Education Committee

POP Update It is wonderful seeing so many families make use of the new Parents Online Payment service. To save on transaction costs you are able pay for more than one child on each transaction. Just ensure you have written their Name and Class in the payment description as displayed in the ‘handy hint’ below. This will also save you having to input your details again. P&C Meeting: P&C Meeting: Our next P&C meeting will be held next Monday 20

th June at 7:00pm, in the

staffroom. We would love to see more new faces at our meetings. So if you would like to hear more about what’s happening in the school, present ideas, share opinions, vote on items raised and/or help out with or hear about any of our events, please join us at the next meeting.

Trivia Night: The P&C trivia night will be held on Friday 24th

June from 7:00pm in the school hall. Tickets are $10

per person and tables of 8-10 people will be available. If you do not have a group to fill a table then we will allocate you to a table. This will be a fun filled, entertaining night where you can bring along your own food and drinks. Games, raffle, lucky door prizes and prizes for the table winners are all on offer. A flyer for the event has been sent home so if you did not receive one, extra copies can be collected from the school office. Forms and money need to be returned to the school office by Wednesday 22

nd June. Don't miss this night; get your form and money in ASAP!

P&C Events – Village Fair: The planning and organising for our P&C end of year event is underway. The

Village Fair is scheduled for Friday 28th

October from 4:00pm. Rides, food, games and entertainment will all be included on the night. Our rides have been booked with Fosters Amusements and a variety of food will be available for dinner options. If you would like to add to the ideas for this event, then please drop your details into the school office or speak to one of our P&C members.

School Hats: School hats are available for purchase at the canteen for $11.

Joanne Crawford, P&C President

Congratulations to 4/5A, who had the most bankers of any class last week. SET A REMINDER FOR MONDAY NIGHTS: We are still seeing around the same numbers of people banking each week – 87 last week. The more bankers we have, the more you save, and the more money the school receives to purchase resources for your school. Plus, students who have made 15 deposits by the end of term 3 go into the draw to win the Grand Prize – a trip for two adults and three kids to meet the Irwins at Australia Zoo! By putting a Monday night reminder into your smart phone calendar, you won’t forget to fill out the bank books ready for Tuesday! FILL OUT YOUR SLIPS AND STUBS: In future, if the deposit amount, student ID (if known), BSB/Branch and account number, name and date are not filled in as

required on the deposit slip AND stub, deposits WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. Our volunteers do not have time to fill out bankers’ details, and having the correct deposit amount on both the slip AND the stub helps us eliminate errors in balancing the cash with the deposit slips. So, make sure you don’t miss out on a deposit, and fill those details in. Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated. School Banking Coordinators and Volunteers: Jenny Evans, Liz Illievski, Nicole Martin and Anne Davies.

We are so glad to see so many of you enjoying our new daily specials! Check the noticeboard near the office or see us at the canteen to see what the special of the day is! As always, we thank you for your support.
