March 2016
What a fantastic start to the year. Year Seven are generally settling in very well and most students are finding their niche in the wider con-text of the School. They are particularly taking advantage of the newly renovated Year 7 Area and Library spaces which are proving enormously popular. A reminder to parents that in High School, calls for sport-ing teams occur on the school assembly - so tell your children to keep a keen ear out during these times. Please remember that if there is not a sporting or cultural opportunity that your child is keen to participate in - then contact us and we will investigate if it can be offered. I am a big believer that students who are motivated and engaged with their school life tend to achieve better results and am happier at school. Since the last newsletter there have been some outstanding school renewals renovations- most notably between B and C block (see picture above). This area has for a long time been unutilised, but has now been renovated into a lovely grassed area which over time will provide a pleasant and shaded place for students to work and relax in the breaks. Students are preparing for the Easter break and later the school holidays which will be quickly followed by the NAPLAN examinations from the 10th to the 13th May. Year 7 and 9 are working dutifully towards these tests and teachers have done practice marking of papers to identify strengths and areas for future improvement. Can I please remind parents and carers that NAPLAN is a diagnostic test that assists the school in look-ing at how students can be further supported in their learning. However, for many students this credential will later be used in both part-time and full-time job interviews - so it is important that all students try to attain the strongest result possible.

Over the last month we have had some nota-ble sporting successes. I’d particularly like to
congratulate our school swimming team which came second in a Central Coast Zone. I’d also like to acknowledge the efforts of our Year Seven Rugby Union team who also finished runners-up in the seven- a-side tournament last week at the Woy Woy Campus against schools from across the Central Coast. Brisbane Water Secondary College supports Gonski. We appreciate how this additional funding can make a real difference in the life opportunities of all students- particularly those with fewer life opportunities than others. Gonski funding is making a real difference at our school. The school is currently meeting with all levels of government to investigate the possibility of undertaking a major upgrade of the schools sporting oval. These ovals are in very poor shape and it is hoped that these can be rejuvenated to a standard that will allow, both the school and community, to utilise this resource much better in the future. Finally I would like to thank Nationwide Realty in Ettalong for their support of the school. They have contribut-ed one thousand dollars to support a range of projects across the school (see below). This is very much appreciated and shows the growing links between Brisbane Water Secondary College and its business com-munity. Have a safe and prosperous Easter.

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Community Members,
As Term 1 draws to a close can I acknowledge the outstanding start we have had to the year. This year has begun with the majority of students working to their full potential, and as I have moved around the school, I have been amazed at the high standard of work being produced in all
classes. This is a credit to our staff and the attitude that our students bring with them from home.
Thank you also to parents and students for making such an effort to have the correct uniform (including shoes) throughout this term. As the weather begins to turn, your support in ensuring that the high standards
expected by the whole school community are met is greatly appreciated.
For Parents and Carers please note that the first Parent Teacher Information Evening is during Week 9 this term, Wednesday 30th March 2016. Bookings can be made through the Parent Portal or by students arranging
times with their Teachers.
Finally, a note of concern. I am always thrilled to see our students riding bikes, skateboards and scooters to school. I need to remind all Students, Parents and Carers that Helmets must be worn. We do not wish to stop
students riding to school but all students are required by law to protect themselves.
Looking forward to a great end of Term 1 and ahead for Term 2.

Time seems to be flying in team 3. All students have had a great start to term one, with students focusing on bringing the appropriate school equipment and wearing the correct uniform. Students in team 3 have im-pressed teachers with their continuing enthusiasm for learning and their dedication to working to the best of
their ability in many of the different subjects they undertake.
Year seven have had a great start and are settling into their routine well. They have been working hard in all subjects but are particularly enjoying science. This term in science they have been learning about scientific equipment. They have learnt how to use bunsen burners, about parallax error, how to use a beam balance
and how to draw scientific diagrams.
Reminder for year 7: Please ensure that all student diaries are being signed each week by parents, as they
are an excellent communication tool.
Year 8 students in team three have also been working hard in all subjects. In English they are learning about issues of refugees in the world. They are currently reading Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman in
preparation for their speech which is due week 8.
Reminder: students are to have a reading book daily for roll call
Year 9 has settled right into their last year at BWSC where they are thoroughly enjoying the wide range of electives on offer. In our two year 9 classes we have several students completing a vast array of electives from Girls Athletics Academy, Bushcraft, Food with Flair, Write On, marine studies and much more. Outside of their electives, the year 9 students have been putting in 110% in all classes. This is evident in PE where they have just finished the fitness testing unit. Most students have made large improvements in the majority
of their fitness results from the previous two years.

Last newsletter we gave you an idea of how Year 7 have been settling in. This week we are focusing on Year
8 CAPA. This class have been off to a great start this year.
SAFETY FIRST in SCIENCE!
Year 8 are studying Biology… It’s always safety first when dissecting any-
thing!!! Biology is the study of living organisms, divided into many special-
ised fields that cover their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behaviour,
origin, and distribution.
8CAPA in DRAMA
Year 7 and Year 8 have been doing their Fairy-tale Group performances.
They have so much confidence and both classes are very supportive of each
other. The class uses a piece of writing that tells a story and then performs it
on a stage. Costumes, tales of mystery… ghouls and goblins... who wouldn’t
want to be part of Drama!
8CAPA in VISUAL ART
This year has started off with the topic “Places and
Spaces”. Our class has been learning about the history
and techniques of linear perspective also known as One
Point Perspective. This technique creates the illusion of
3-Dimensional space on a 2-Dimensional page. Skills
that Year 8 is learning include: tonal rendering, measur-
ing, ruling, estimating, colour scheme selection, textur-
ing. Our class will also learn about the Artist Jeffery
Smart and his methodical practice of drawing in the field
and painting in his studio.

Interact is a program run by the Rotary Club that is open to all students. So far this year we have had
three Interact meetings in which we have outlined our goals for the year and looked at what projects we
would like to do.
We have two major projects in Interact, one community project and one international one. Our community
project is Breakfast Club, which is held every Wednesday morning and is open to all students.
Our international project is to raise funds to buy a Shelter Box that helps families of up to twelve people
after a disaster that has caused them to lose almost everything.
Last week Interact held our breakfast club barbeque, which we run once a term, to raise enough funds to
continue breakfast club throughout the term. This is aimed towards any students who do not eat breakfast
of a morning.
Throughout the year interact will also be involved in activities such as Legacy Day, Give up your Bed and
other fundraisers.
Interact will be coordinated by our President, Andrew Witten and Vice President, Sally Mislov.
By Shaylan and Kyle
This year the SRC is coordinating a wide variety of activities throughout
2016.
Already our SRC members have been involved in an induction day where
they were introduced to one another and proceeded in a wide set of games
and tasks which enhanced teamwork and leadership skills.
During the induction day the SRC also decided what they would like to
change around the school, what charities they would like to fundraise for,
and what events they would like to participate in throughout the year.
Our SRC will also be holding dance parties, speaking at the ANZAC Day
assembly and holding regular meetings to work out any other events that
we would like to run or participate in.
Our coordinators include, Roman Myszkowski, Linda Harvey, and school
captains; Shaylan Petersen and Kyle Dufficy.

Junior AECG group
This year a Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) was formed. The junior AECG is a representative group for Aboriginal students at BWSC. The group meets several times a term to plan what they, as a student body will discuss what is happening in relation to Aboriginal education. Students also plan what they, as a student body will do within the school. The group runs in conjunction with the Senior AECG – Koorana which is made up of members of the Aborig-
inal community, parents/caregivers and representatives from all schools within the Penninsula.
This term we nominated and voted for board members, with each position being hotly contested by several students from across year levels. After careful tallying of votes, I am happy to introduce this year’s board as
the following:
President: Levi Grauner
VicePresident: Skyla Goodwin
Secretary: Tyla Morris

What We Do In Photography
By Liam Norval/ 9PDM.1
At the start of photography, we learned about the inception of photography and in particular, the ways
photography is used (modelling, magazines, etc.). We then looked at the Daguerreotype (using silver
metal to reflect light which creates a photo) and the Camera Obscura (Making a room devoid of light and
putting a little hole in it, which projects outside upside down) and the Calotype (that process took over
after being able to make multiple prints). Then we learned about the later history of photography such as
the Kodak, 35mm, Collodion and so on. Then we did practical work such as a Power Point slide show
about the history of photography.
Example:
(example from the Internet) We then made a pinhole camera (little
black boxes that work like the Camera Obscura, except a few differ-
ences.

TEAM SIX “There is always room at the top.” - Daniel Webster
Team 6 Stars
THIS month, Team Six staff and students would like to acknowledge some of our pupils who are
involved in extra-curricular activities that involve on-going dedication, motivation and
commitment.
BEING ASKED to list his achievements in surf-life saving and swim-
ming is not a simple task for 962’s Lachlan Braddish. There is the mat-
ter of his natural modesty – and then there is the fact that 14-year-old
Lachlan has won countless races, ribbons and trophies over the past
nine years.
Most recently, Lachlan took out the 2016 NSW Surf Life-Saving State
Age Championship title in the under-14 swim race. He was third in the
board race and eighth in the ironman competition. He has been the surf race champion for six years in a
row. Lachlan was defending his ironman title, but torn ligaments in his foot slowed his progress this year.
A former Express Advocate young sports star of the year, Lachlan was awarded the BWSC, Umina,
sports star of the week award in March not only for his prowess at the beach and in the pool, but also for
his all-round commitment to his studies across all of his subjects.
He trains every morning and afternoon and says this regimen has made him a disciplined sportsman.
“You have to train hard, but you must make sure you enjoy your sport. I love the atmosphere.”
TEAM SIX is well-represented in the close-knit group of
agriculture students who care for the BWSC stock both
at school and at agricultural shows around NSW.
Kynesha Stapleton, 962, Chelsea Barrett, 861, Tahlia
Campbell, 861, Jordan Cooley, 961, Tyler Jeffery, 962,
and Kiara Barnett, 861, have represented the school
with great success at a range of shows including
Maitland, Canberra and the Sydney Royal Easter
Show.
While the students wash, weigh and parade the cattle
as well as polish halters for competition, much of their
time is spent at school preparing and tending the
animals.

USI NUMBERS All students have now been shown and or completed their appli-
cation for their USI numbers. The USI (Unique Student Identification number) is
now compulsory for anyone wishing to complete any courses. Please be aware
that if your child has not got their USI number they will not be able to complete the
careers courses on offer.
TAX FILE NUMBERS Students have also been shown how to apply for a tax file
number (TFN). Please note that the closest post office to lodge the completed
application for is Gosford.
BARISTA Another successful Barista course was completed on March 4. Stu-
dents had a great day and learnt the art of making the perfect coffee. For those
students wanting to attend the next course, the new notes for the May 27 excur-
sion are now up on the BWSC Umina website, under Careers and Transition’
CAREER CLASSES It is rather concerning that many students have still not
brought an exercise book to their careers lessons. Would you please ensure that
your child has an exercise book (48 page) for this subject. This book is needed so
that students can start to work on building their skills, attributes and knowledge of
the subject. It is also been asked that they have a USB for this subject , so that
they can be saving computer work for their future reference.
NEW OPPORTUNITIES
An opportunity exists for some of our students to be involved in the RAISE men-
toring program that will run in terms 2 and 3. Students have been nominated, with assistance from the Execu-
tive staff. A note will be circulated shortly if your child is one of the lucky contenders.
There is also discussion about taking some students to Novaksills at Tuggerah to complete a standard apti-
tude test. This is a great opportunity and will provide both parents and students with some insight on their
abilities and if they are soon to be ready for their nominated trade / apprenticeship.
If you have a child who is thinking of leaving school at the end of year 10 and would like them to undergo this
test, please contact me on the school number.
A reminder that the whitecard course for May 20 is filling fast. All notes and payments must go to student
reception.

Year 7 students in Team 8
had a wonderful time at the
Challenge Ranch camp on 15th and 16th February.
Students participated in a range of activities that provided students with the
opportunity to challenge themselves as well as opportunities to demonstrate their ability to work in a team. It
was also a great opportunity for students to meet new friends.
We would like to congratulate the students on their exceptional behaviour……...except for the moment when
some Team 8 students thought it would be fun to tip Mr Lawler out of his kayak…..which it was!!! It was also
great to see the support and encouragement that students offered to one another to help each other get
through some testing activities.
Thank you also to all the teachers who gave up time away from their
families.

March 7 is the official start of the 2016 Premiers Reading Challenge. The Challenge aims to encourage a love
of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a
competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. At BWSC we
encourage all students to participate in the reading challenge and every Year 7 has been allocated a Person-
al Reading Log ready to record their efforts. The challenge is even more attractive with the addition of hun-
dreds of new fiction and nonfiction titles to our library!
Our Student Librarians are offering various
lunch activities during Lunch 1 and Lunch 2
for MakerSpace Monday. These activities
have included craft and robotics using our
Eddison Robots! Tutorial Tuesdays has
been busy with many students and teachers
making use of the library facilities to com-
plete homework tasks and work on assign-
ments. We also offer CodeClub Australia
sessions, this term focussing on program-
ming with Scratch.

PBL CARTOONING WORKSHOPS
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
On the 23rd and 24th of MARCH, we have the privilege of having the renowned cartoonist and motivational
speaker, Joffa (a.k.a Jeff Taylor) visit our Umina Campus to speak to and do workshops with all our Year 7
students about the importance of school values; Respect, Commitment and Relationships.
This will be a creative workshop opportunity for our students where they will learn specific visual literacy
skills. One of the key objectives of our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) program is to make all school
stakeholders aware of and able to effectively communicate the school values in a variety of ways. We be-
lieve that creating cartoon characters with comedic messages is an ideal way to promote these values.
The workshops will go for an hour and a half and each student will be invited to attend one of these sched-
uled workshops. The cost will be $5 per student. We would ask that you send your child’s contribution in an
envelope to the front office by Week 8 of this Term.
The PBL Team would like to thank you in anticipation of your continued commitment to excellence at
BWSC.

Year 8 Spanish students have been learning how to say basic greetings in Spanish such as "hola" and
"buenos dias", and how to say the Spanish alphabet. They have also investigated all the different Spanish
speaking countries around the world including Cuba, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, and many
others. Each student chose a country to focus on, and produced a poster showing its flag and some infor-
mation that they researched. The posters are now displayed in our classroom.
