trip possible

Nineteen students from Year 7 – 10 headed out to Central West NSW for an adventure farming week on Monday 8th June. The trip was a fantastic adventure for all the students who learnt so much from having the opportunity to visit and work on commercial farms. Meeting students from Central West NSW was also a

highlight.

Term 2 is quickly drawing to a close and I’d like to thank the staff for their wonderful work in preparing

student reports. It has been a great term and I have been very impressed by our student achievements in

a wide range of sporting, cultural and academic pursuits.

Brisbane Water Secondary College is currently undertaking an extensive ‘student voice’ initiative to

ascertain how students like to learn and their thoughts on schooling at Brisbane Water Secondary

College. The school will also host a forum for all students across the Central Coast in the library looking at

a collective voice for students in this growing area. This Student Voice Alliance will be complemented by

information gathered from parents and teachers at the school and those from our partner primary schools.

This information will then regularly be reviewed as part of the ‘BWSC Strategic Plan’ for the next three

years, as we endeavour to make our outstanding school even better by attempting to meet the specific

needs of our community.

The campus is also continuing to upgrade facilities with a facelift being undertaken in the library, by creat-

ing a boardroom. The purchase of 30 chrome books will make it a centre point of the campus to hang

artworks and modernise its appearance to make it a 21st Century learning space.

The new Support Unit area looks outstanding and parents, staff and students love the changes.

Unfortunately the grass in the outdoor area has not worn well and synthetic grass is being sourced to

make the area more durable particularly in the winter months.

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Aboriginal Education Officer Morrie Goolagong has begun at

the school and is working on students’ murals to be hung around the school. Morrie is an exceptional artist

and he is imparting skills for all students at the school. The campus is in the process of recruiting two new

members of staff to cover the promotions of Sean Connell (Head Teacher Teaching and Learning Tullybuc

Central School) and Adam Montgomery (Deputy Principal BWSC Umina Campus). These Science and

Head Teacher PDHPE positions will be finalised by early next term and we are expecting a very strong

field of potential candidates.

On the topic of school improvement I would again like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing

contributions and tireless work of both the Umina and Woy Woy Rotary Clubs. Their support of the school

farm has been overwhelming and has allowed students of the peninsula opportunities in Agriculture that

are simply amazing.

Woy Woy Rotary have also been working hard with our student leadership team to implement an interact

project whereby a breakfast program is run every Wednesday at the school. This program is proving very

successful and I’d like to thank Mr Myszkowski, Ms Crump and all the students involved for this wonderful

community project.

These strong community links are greatly appreciated by the entire school community. Any business or

individual wishing to undertake a similar arrangement is encouraged to contact me at the school to discuss

opportunities available to support students’ education at the College. Current examples of successful part-

nerships include Woy Woy Rugby Union’s involvement in maintaining the school ovals, and iiNet’s sponsor-

ship of the school bus.

Overall, there are amazing programs and initiatives that are occurring across the College. Please promote

the great work that is taking place and encourage parents who have historical doubts to contact me for a tour

of the school. Also feel free to suggest that they look at our school promotional video which can be accessed

through our school website and Facebook page.

Looking forward to a great Term 3

As we come to the end of another very busy semester I would like to take

time to reflect on the great achievements of both students and staff and thank all parents

and the community for their ongoing support.

After having the pleasure of reading the student reports I would like to congratulate the students on their

pursuit of excellence within the classroom. I look forward to celebrating these achievements at the Academic

Assembly early in Term 3.

Outside the classroom the students have continued to achieve at their personal best with outstanding perfor-

mances from students within the Agriculture, CAPA and Sport programs. More recent performances have

included the successful aerobics and cheerleading teams qualifying for the National Championships to be

held in Qld in August, and super coach Mr Crouch with his Buckley Shield Rugby League team crowned

Central Coast Champions again!

With the educational landscape rapidly changing I would like to thank all staff for their dedication and willing-

ness to adopt new teaching practices to improve individual student learning outcomes. Staff have initiated

the first phase of their annual Performance and Development Framework focusing on reflective practice and

improving teaching quality. During Semester Two staff will be developing their implementation of the Focus

on Reading Literacy Program, with parent sessions planned for the second half of term 3.

Lastly I would like to thank all parents and caregivers in particular the P&C for the ongoing support of the

College. We are currently updating Campus policies and we value the contribution of the community in this

process. The new Campus Assessment policy will be published during Semester Two.

Team Two-rrific stu-

dents and staff have

settled well into term two. It is a busy term with assessment tasks

in all subjects, the Athletics Carnival, Semester One Reports and

the end of semester Rewards Day. We encourage all students to

organise their study schedule and seek help with assessment

tasks so that they can achieve their best. Team Two is

endowed with many students who consistently demon-

strate the school’s core values of commitment, respect

and good relationships. Those who reached Bronze

level recently enjoyed an icy, flavoursome zooper

dooper. These are some of those students.

and said, “Shaving your hair isn’t a big deal if you’re doing it

for a good cause.” Alex’s father also volunteered to have his

head shaved to boost his son’s fundraising total.

Many of our students participate in extracurricular

activities that develop their skills, extend their

interests and help the community.

Elaura-Jane Sullivan loves all aspects of visual storytelling and enjoys

making short films using her iPad and GoPro. Now represented by a top

In Class -

Yr8 have been using their skills and learning to touch type. This has proved to be a challenge for some but I

do hope they decide to work on developing their skills more in their own time.

Yr9 - By now ALL year 9 students have completed 3 lessons drafting and typing up their resumes. If stu-

dents worked consistently in class their resumes will now be complete. Some students however, may need

to fine tune their resumes in their own time as they will not be worked on again in class until Term 4, in

preparation for the Mock Interviews.

USI

All Yr9 students have now been shown how to apply for USI numbers. For all future courses including the

Barista and Whitecard courses. Students must produce the USI number before the course commencement.

Failure to do this unfortunately means they will not be allowed to complete the course.

Yr9 Taster Courses -

Several of our students have attended courses this term at TAFE; Hair & Beauty and Automotive. The stu-

dents have enjoyed learning skills of the trade and the opportunity to try something new.

The close of the term sees several boys attending an NRL work experience program and another working

at the Reptile Park

The upcoming Barista course in July is now full. All new courses will be up on the BWSC Umina Careers

and Transition website after that.

Brisbane Water Secondary College, Year 7 students have all been entered

into the Premier’s Sporting Challenge. This is an initiative to increase the level

of activity for students in NSW schools, which is important due to the increas-

ing levels of inactivity within the community.

Students are up to Week 4 in this initiative where they are working to

complete the colouring-in of the activity boxes in the students log books.

These log books are distributed and completed during roll call for a total

of ten weeks. Students in each team will be competing against one an-

other to try and be the most active team across all of Year 7. Every stu-

dent who participates will receive a certificate.

Our Year 7 class have also had an amazing semester in Visual Arts.

Students learnt about drawing and observation skills which led to a self-

portrait with amazing results followed by creating a mask from clay.

As Semester 1 finishes Team 3 would like to congratulate the

students who have achieved Silver in our PBL program. We hope

you enjoyed your rewards excursion this week. As you read your

reports over the holidays each student is encouraged to reflect on

what they have achieved this semester and make a goal, one

area that they want to improve on, for Semester 2.

Have a safe and happy holiday and see you Term 3.

Central West NSW 2015 Newsletter

Nineteen students from Year 7 – 10 headed out to Central West NSW for an adventure farming for a week on

Monday 8th June.

The excursion started at the property “Lachlan Dale” owned by Richard and Heather Cole at Forbes. We camped there for three days in the beautiful old shearing shed while students developed skills in many farm-

ing practices.

The day started with getting up at 5.30 am to bring 190 cows in for milking at the Dairy. Marking lambs, shearing sheep, milling feed, feeding the pigs and handling cattle were some of the activities we enjoyed.

There were Farm visits throughout the week, the first being the Sheep Sales at Forbes. Students watched 37,000 sheep auctioned on the day in the most technological livestock exchange facili-ty in the Southern Hemisphere. They learned about different breeds and markets and were

amazed at the scale of the sales. We bought 6 store cross bred lambs to bring back to school to grow on.

Day three we visited “Lachlan Merinos” a world famous Merino Stud where we learned about the production of superior quality

Merino wool and meat.

Mr Rubie showed the students his property, fleeces, flock and stud rams where they also

learned about Artificial Insemination.

Mr Rubie kindly donated a very interesting book to the Agriculture Department on

sheep and wool production.

That afternoon we visited a large cropping property called “The Shanahan Farms” which grew Wheat, Barley and Canola. The students were overwhelmed at how large the machinery was and the technical

accuracy achieved through Global Positioning Systems and Automated steering from satellite guidance.

Day four we moved to Bedgerabong Showground and participated in the Interactive Youth Pig Show. 93 students entered from schools throughout the Central West NSW. Students competed in Pig preparation, Pig Parading, and Pig judging competitions. There were interactive workshops including Artificial Insemina-tion and Pig disease management. BWSC was highly competitive in the Junior Judging, Presentation and Parading competitions.Congratulations to the

students who placed in these events.

The final day was a Pig Auction and buyers came from as far as Western and South Aus-tralia. 70 pigs were entered for sale. BWSC brought a young Berkshire female who placed at Sydney Royal this year and she achieved the highest price of all Berkshires! Mr Neville Chad the Sydney Royal Judge 2015 donated a book he has just released on Pig

production to the Agricultural Department.

The trip was a fantastic adventure for all the students who learnt so much from having the opportunity to visit and work on commercial farms. Meeting

students from Central West NSW was also a highlight.

The students and staff would like to express sincere thanks to the farming community who made this trip

possible.

Firstly to Richard and Heather Cole for their hospitality and the opportunities they organized for the

students both on their farm and other properties.

Tim Alexander of Forbes Livestock Sales Centre for talking to the students and subsidizing the

cost of the store lambs.

Mr Rubie for his tour of “Lachlan Merinos” and donation of the Wool Book.

Lance for his tour of the cropping property “Shanahan Farms” and letting the students see and hop

in the world class cropping machinery.

The Committee who organized the Inaugural Interactive Pig Show and Mr Chad for donating the
