Bonnie Dobson was born in Toronto in the winter of 1940 andhas remained one of this countrys great unsung folk secrets. HerMorning Dew is a bonafide folk music standard and thankfully,German label Inakustik has finally seen fit to anthologize her.

Bonnie Dobson's name is synonymous with one composition:"Morning Dew," a song covered by the likes of the Grateful Dead,Lulu, Rod Stewart, Robert Plant and countless others. It waswritten in 1961. By 1963 she had already recorded four albumsand was cited as one of the "Folk Girls" along with Joan Baez,Judy Collins and Carolyn Hester. In 2006 her friend Friedemann(a renowned musician in his own right) began to restore Bonnie'slarge archive of unreleased tapes. They discovered recordingsmuch too good to be left on the shelf. The idea of a retrospectivecollection of songs with Bonnie Dobson, the singer; and byBonnie Dobson, the songwriter, began to take shape. In its finalstage the album contains sessions from 1971, 1983 and 1996.Some instrumental accompaniments were added during theremastering process in 2009.

OMD's first full-length album won as much attention for its brilliant die-cut cover

(which MICROWERKS pays homage to) as for its music, and its music is wonderfuFor all that, this is a young band, working for just about the last time with originapercussionist Winston; there's both a variety and ambition present that neveroverreaches itself. The influences are perfectly clear throughout, but AndyMcCluskey and Paul Humphreys would have been the last people to deny how

Kraftwerk, Sparks, and other avatars of post-guitar pop touched them. What's

undeniably thrilling, though, is how quickly the two synthesized their own style.Consider "Almost," with its dramatic keyboard opening suddenly shifting into acollage of wheezing sound beats and McCluskey's precise bass and heartfelt,lovelorn singing and lyrics. The chilly keyboard base of "The Messerschmitt Twins"

gets offset by McCluskey's steadily stronger vocal, while the swooping, slightlyhollow singing on "Mystereality" slips around a quietly quirky arrangement, helped

just enough by Martin Cooper's at-the-time guest sax. There's little doubt what

the two highlights are - the re-recorded and arguably better version of "Electricityis pure zeitgeist, a celebration of synth pop's incipient reign with fast beats and

even faster singing. The mysterious chimes and spy movie dramatics of "RedFrame/White Light" (inspired by a phone box) are almost as striking. OrchestralManoeuvres in the Dark is just like the band that made it - perfectly of its time

and easily transcending it.

This rare 1963 tape of early Phil Ochs demos was recentlydiscovered. The tape was recorded in Florida by and for RoyConnors of the Highwaymen and contains 25 original Ochssongs. In the early days of the folk movement, songwritersshared their songs with other artists in this way. Most of thesongs on this set are previously unreleased including TheBallad of Alfred Packer, Ill Be There, New Town, TimeWas, and an early version of Power And The Glory with anextra verse. Between cuts, Ochs describes the songs and eventells what chords he uses. A must for any Phil Ochs fan.

There are collectors...and then there are doo wop collectors, which is why

we have dedicated our first Cameo Parkway compilation to the fantasticvocal groups who recorded for the label. All of these (except the Rays track

and the two Roommates tracks, which we HAD to include) are from the

original tapes, and only one track (the Lydells There Goes the Boy, whichagain we felt was a must) has ever been out on CD at retail before. EdOsborne chips in with notes, and helped us on the track selection. Perhaps

Big Sound takes a look at the themes and soundtrack music released by the

British independent label Ember in the 60s and 70s. In the late 50s musicbusiness entrepreneur Jeffrey Kruger partnered with Danziger Productions

to provide them with music for the many TV and cinema productions

emanating from their Elstree studios. Kruger in turn commissioned talentedmusicians like Tony Crombie and Bill Le Sage to provide compositions.

When Kruger founded Ember in 1960, he started releasing some of this

material, both for retail consumption and in the Ember Mood Music Library

series targeted at production companies. Ember issued albums dedicated to

the TV series International Detective and Man From Interpol, showcasingthe compositional talents of Edwin Astley (best known for The Saint

themes) and Tony Crombie respectively. Other TV music appeared onsingles, including Richard The Lionheart by the Ronnie Howard Orchestra,

and Armando Sciascia s themes for two Granada series, The Liars and The

World Tomorrow. A 1966 Ember LP included Bill Le Sage s theme for TheCheaters and a Tony Crombie composition for the film The Spider s Web.

The appointment of John Barry as associate producer and head of A&Rbrought the film soundtracks to the action movie Zulu and drama Four In

The Morning to Ember, for whom Barry also recorded hit single versions of

two James Bond themes, 007 and From Russia With Love. Barry s Fancy

Dance was adopted as theme tune for the long-running BBC soap TheNewcomers. Big Sound also contains generous selections from thesoundtracks to the 1967 film The Penthouse (featuring original music by

John Hawksworth, rounded out with two Mark Wirtz recordings) and the

1971 film You Can t Have Everyth ing (aka Cactus In The Snow) featuring

music by Joe Parnello and Rudy Durand.

Discovered by high school classmate Len Barry, the Orlons(Shirley Brickley, Marlena Davis, Rosetta Hightower andStephen Caldwell) were probably Cameo Parkways most

popular vocal group and certainly the labels top girl group. Thitwofer presents their only two charting albums, their 1962debut The Wah-Watusi and 1963s South Street - bothfeaturing Top 5 title tracks - in their original pristine mono,with notes by Gene Sculatti that include great quotes fromband member Caldwell (he of that ultra-low frog voice)!
