February 21, 2014 7:30pm at TUMC A Note from Rich We have a good news stewardship story to tell. Stewardship has to do with how we care for creation. Stewardship has to do with each of us deciding what portion of our income we will contribute to God's work through the Church. Stewardship also has to do with being faithful in how we deal with our church's assets. Regarding that last category, our Board of Trustees has been charged with overseeing the home on the 1.5 acre lot just west of the church at 480 Los Osos Valley Rd. The Church has maintained this as a rental property. The decision was made to split the lot, increasing the acreage of the Church's parcel. In August of 2010 a Church Conference authorized the Trustees to sell the house on its remaining smaller lot. Over the 10+ years that the church owned the home, the rental income did not cover all the mortgage, maintenance and taxes, so the church made up the difference out of our current expense budget. When the sale was authorized, the Church Conference stipulated that after paying off the mortgage, remaining proceeds would be used to restore our designated Maintenance Fund to $100,000, put at least $60,000 in the General Fund to repay our budget expenditures over the years, renovate the parsonage (the other home we are currently renting on Pine just north of the church), and make the remaining funds available to the Trustees for capital improvement projects. The home was briefly put on the market, but the Trustees determined that 2010 was not a good time to sell the house. In 2013 things changed. After selling the house and paying off the mortgage, we put $42,000 back into maintenance fund, $67,000 into our General Fund, leaving $250,000 for our newly established Capital Improvement fund. So the end result of our faithful stewardship of this asset is that we have gained an acre of land, repaid all of the expenses related to the purchase of the 480 LOVR property, and now have $250,000 available for capital improvements. Our Long Range Planning Task Force met recently to review current needs. They recommend, and the Church Council concurs, that moving toward energy independence and upgrading our audio-visual technology in the sanctuary should be at the top of our list, and that the parsonage renovation project needs more careful consideration. The good news, however, is that we have the funds available to move forward on all of these projects at once. Thanks be to God for the ministry opportunities that are before us. Pastor Rich P.S. Our General Fund ended 2013 with a negative balance of $-13,488. After adding the $67,024 from the proceeds of the 480 LOVR sale, our General Fund begins the year with a reserve of $53,138. The continued faithful stewardship of the congregation is needed in order to keep us from having a negative fund balance in the future. TUMC Leadership Training Scheduled for February 8 th At The Trinity UMC leadership workshop on Saturday morning, February 8 th , participants are exploring the Biblical mandate to reach out beyond our comfort zones, the demographics of our congregation and our community, and information and skills helpful for including persons across generations and cultural boundaries. Sometimes the hardest bridge to gap is a generational one. It becomes even more difficult to maneuver when you are not only faced with different in ideas, perspectives and experience, but throw in the ever-changing world of technology to the mix and it can seem impossible. Fortunately it is possible, and not as daunting of a task as one might think. First it requires understanding. Our perceived notion of any generation or people group will never change if we choose to live in ignorance. Sometimes we gain understanding from a simple conversation, other times it requires us to delve a little deeper. Either way, when we seek to move past stereotypes and into understanding, the task of bridging the generational gap looses some of it's difficulty. Another thing to keep in mind is that so many times when confronted with anything outside of our own comfort zone we tend to focus immediately on the differences. Concentrating on only the things that are different creates a wider gap. Sometimes it can be work, but we need to shift our focus to the things we have in common. Common interests are the building blocks of good relationships. And finally remember that bridging the gap is about creating connection, and connection is a two way street. Part of creating a healthy link is offering a piece of ourselves. Who we are is important. We always have to remember that including persons from across generational boundaries does not mean we deny the things that have defined us. It simply means that we are recognizing that although my perspective is important, it is not the only one. Jeff Manildi Director of Discipleship THANKS FOR THE FOOD!!! Trinity UMC Is Now a Reconciling Congregation

The Church Council, at its January 11th, 2014 meeting, adopted the following statement by consensus: "In keeping with the previous action of the Church

Council to place a statement of inclusion in the weekly worship bulletin, and the action of the 2012 Church Conference to adopt a Vision Statement with a similar statement of inclusion, Trinity UMC chooses to affiliate with the Reconciling Ministries Network and to be listed as a Reconciling Congregation."

Our vision is to be "a community of faith seeking to follow Jesus, welcoming to the Lord’s table all who would journey with us regardless of race, culture, age, gender, sexual orientation or differing abilities." [Vision Statement, adopted 2012]

Music NotesA couple of words about handbell ringing: It's really fun! Our Trinity Ringers, led by Everett Whitbeck, practice on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 P.M., and play in worship about every four to six weeks. Nearly all of our ringers were learning a new skill when they joined. If you've ever thought about trying bells, see or call Everett or Barbara; we'll be happy to answer questions, demonstrate bell technique, and welcome you into Trinity's music "family."

Barbara

Thank you to everyone who responded to the service on January 19th. Your generosity and support was overwhelming. I am sifting through everyone’s response and I’m looking forward to sharing the next step for the youth program.

We will have more specific information regarding the direction of the youth ministry coming soon.

Thanks again and God Bless!
