ULTIMA® X Gas Monitors[ Providing a unique Range of Capabilities]

The ULTIMA X series of gas moni-tors is available with catalytic sen-sors for combustible gas and elec-trochemical sensors for toxic andoxygen [ULTIMA XE] or infrared forcombustible gas [ULTIMA XIR].

The state-of-the-art design provi-des ease of use and maintenanceand notably the XIR technology’soutstanding long term accuracyextends the calibration interval.

All ULTIMA X series monitors areprotected by a rugged, explosionproof stainless steel enclosure andare suitable for indoor and out-door applications in virtually anyindustry including offshore opera-tions.

ULTIMA X are state-of-the-art gas monitors for continuousdetection and monitoring of combustible gases, toxics andoxygen concentration.

The monitors can be deployed asstand-alone units, but also providea 4 to 20 mA output for connec-tion to controllers. In addition, theULTIMA X3 range now supportsModBUS RTU communication withPLC, DCS or other control systems.

Allowing for variable sensor place-ment, ULTIMA X series gas moni-tors have multiple enclosure entries for left, right or bottomwiring. The monitors are also suitable for remote sensing applications, with up to 15 m between sensor and electronics.

The modular design allows forpre-installation and wiring of themain enclosure at early stages ofsite construction. Main electronicsand calibrated sensors can beeasily added at commissioning toreduce risk of loss or damage andmaximise sensor life.

ULTIMA X catalytic and toxic“Smart Sensor” modules store allcalibration data internally, allow-ing convenient sensor presettingand calibration in the workshop.Calibration in the field is also possible, e.g. if required by regula-tions. No tools are needed for connecting or disconnecting sensormodules, and power to the moni-tor can remain on.

An electronically modulated source of infrared energy and twodetectors convert the infraredenergy into electrical signals. Eachdetector is sensitive to a differentrange of wavelengths in the infra-red spectrum. The source emis-sion is directed through a windowin the main enclosure into anopen volume. A mirror, protectedby a second window, directs theenergy back into the main enclo-

sure and onto the detectors. Thepresence of a combustible gas inthe open volume will reduce theintensity of the source emissionreaching the detector, but not theintensity of the source emissionreaching the reference detector.The microprocessor monitors theratio of these two signals and cor-relates this to a % LEL combusti-ble reading.

units can be equipped with up to3 sensors each, 93 sensors in allcan share a single signal line.The wiring effort is minimal.
