Sensor Disconnect Under PowerMSA’s proprietary feature allows for sensorchange-out without declassifying ahazardous area. (Patent Pending)

Interchangeable Smart SensorsPre-calibrated sensor modules are ready forinstallation out of the box. Sensors can bereplaced in the field without the use oftools. The unit quickly recognizes the newsensor type and reconfigures alarm and relaysettings to optimize the new sensor.

State-of-the-Art DisplayLiquid crystal display conveniently alternatesbetween sensor reading and gas type andfeatures scrolling messaging, indicatingongoing diagnostic checks such as sensor"end-of-life" condition.

World-Class DesignEngineering efforts feature a single-boarddesign for ultimate reliability andserviceability. The multiple-entry mountingenclosure has been designed to be separatefrom the electronics and sensor, allowing forproblem-free installation and servicing.

Onboard LEDs and RelaysOptional "quick-check" LEDs and four relayoutputs allow for increased indication ofalarm and fault conditions. “Quick-check"LEDs, viewable from afar, indicate NORMAL(green) and ALERT (red) status conditions.Field-programmable alarm levels andnormally energized/de-energized, normallyopened/closed and latching/non-latchingrelay functions offer three levels of alarmand a fault.

With a number of new and exciting features, theUltima X Series Gas Monitors are suitable forindoor and outdoor applications in virtually anytype of industry including offshore, refineries,chemical and petrochemical facilities, steel mills,water and wastewater plants, mining, and general industry.

Installation and OperationInstallation is both simple and flexible. The UltimaXE Gas Monitor offers multiple enclosure entriesfor left, right, top or bottom wiring feed. Two-piece field-wiring connectors make wiringinstallations easy.The Ultima X Series Gas Monitors operate indiffusion mode, with factory-calibrated sensorsready to perform immediately after installation.The monitors are also available for remote sensingapplications, where installations require the sensorbe separated from the electronics, up-to 100 feet.Ultima X Series Gas Monitors, can operatecompletely stand-alone with a large LCD display,optional “quick-check” LEDs and four relay outputs(three alarm and one fault), or connected with astandard 4-20mA output to a control system (PLC,DCS, etc.).

CalibrationAs with all gas monitors, Ultima X Series GasMonitors must be calibrated periodically with thegas of interest to ensure proper operation. Thecalibration process offers time and date stamping,along with selectable lockout of output signalduring calibration.

The Ultima X smart sensor module contains allcalibration information within the module.Calibration can be done in the field with thesensor module connected to the transmitter or ina shop area by disconnecting the sensor moduleand calibrating with another base unit. Thisremote calibration method does not requireshutting down power or any other systeminterruptions.The Ultima X Series Gas Monitors reduce thepossibility of human error when performingcalibration. Simply activate the calibration modeand follow the instructions on the LCD display.Instructions will detail when to apply zero andspan gas. The Ultima X Series Gas Monitorsautomatically make any adjustments. There’s noguesswork– the actual gas readout is displayedduring calibration.Two types of calibration communication devicesare available for the Ultima X Series Gas Monitors.The Ultima Monitor’s calibrator and controllerboth provide a digitally encoded signal for non-intrusive calibration and access to advancedfeatures. This eliminates tools as well as the needto open the enclosure during set-up andcalibration.

The Ultima® XIR Gas Monitor[ Infrared technology for combustible gas detection ]The Ultima XIR GasMonitor is a microprocessor-based, infrared point gasdetector for continuousmonitoring of combustiblegases and vapors. Designedaround a rugged, 316 stainlesssteel enclosure, the Ultima XIRMonitor is the latest sensor tobe launched in the Ultima XSeries of Gas Monitors.

The Ultima XIR Monitoroperation is based on dual-wavelength, heated-opticstechnology, providing definitivecompensation for temperature,humidity and aging effects. TheIR technology offers excellentlong-term stability, eliminatesthe need for frequentcalibrations and reduces overallcost of ownership.

Features

* 316 stainless steel explosion-proof, multiple-entry-mountingenclosure.

* Field-selectable algorithms for avariety of hydrocarbon-basedgases.

* LCD display with scrollingmessaging.

* Single-board design for ultimatereliability and easy, no-toolservicing.

* 4-20mA output.

* Optional "quick-check" LEDs forincreased product visibility.

* Optional field-programmablerelays feature three alarm levelsand one fault.

* "Fail to Safety" operation.

Benefits

* No-gas calibration. A zeroadjustment is all that is requiredfor full calibration.

* Extremely fast speed of response.

* Designed without a sintered diskfor optimum performance in theharsh, offshore environment.

* Operates over extendedtemperature ranges.

* Immune to poisoning.

* Sensor life not reduced byexposure to gas.

* Automatic compensation forhumidity and temperaturechanges.

* No moving parts, jumpers,switches or pots.

* Operates in high-gas and low-oxygen environments.

Principles of IR TechnologyThe Ultima XIR Gas Monitor uses an electronicallymodulated source of infrared energy and twodetectors that convert the infrared energy intoelectrical signals. Each detector is sensitive to adifferent range of wavelengths in the infraredportion of the spectrum.

The source emission is directed through awindow in the main enclosure into an openvolume. A mirror at the end of this volume,protected by a second window, directs the energyback through the window in the main enclosureand onto the detectors.

The presence of a combustible gas in the openvolume will reduce the intensity of the sourceemission reaching the analytical detector but notthe intensity of the source emission reaching thereference detector. The microprocessor monitorsthe ratio of these two signals and correlates thisto a %LEL combustible reading.
