COMPETITIONS QUARTER-FINALS
LEE CHALLIS beat IAN BREAKSPERE 5&3
The TWO outstanding matches should have been played at or before BURNHAM BEECHES but it is
proving somewhat difficult for the participants to arrange a suitable venue/date.
THEREFORE, the committee have agreed for them to be played at STONEHAM PARK on 19th
July
THIS IS THE VERY FINAL DATE THEY MUST BE PLAYED BY
BARRY PHILLIPS v RICHARD WEST and VINCE WEST v JON AXON
HANDICAPS Lee has revised the handicaps after Burnham Beeches and a new list is attached (last page).
If you have any problems or questions you would like to ask Lee, contact him at [email protected]
IF ANY CLUB MEMBERS HAVE A NEW HC, PLEASE INFORM LEE.
SCORECARDS Last month, Dave Evans when doing the gross/net score averages for this newsletter, came across a serious
mistake in totalling the Stableford scores (net scores didn’t tally), resulting in Andy Halstead coming second
(not 3rd
) on countback to Ricky Cox, both had 39 pts. THIS ISN’T THE FIRST MISTAKE MADE THIS SEASON.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERYONE TO COMPLETE SCORECARDS
ACCURATELY AND CHECK THEM BEFORE HANDING IN.
Also, a number of cards are not signed – so, £5 fine for any unsigned cards at Stoneham.
CORRECTION Apologies to Andy Halstead – last month he, not Andy Whitehurst, should have been included in the best Team/
group stableford points average. Hope I’ve amended appropriate sheet correctly (FARTS page 4)
ACCOUNTS Our present balance as at 1/7/13 is approximately £1400
The anticipated balance after Captain’s Weekend for the start of the new season in October is just £300.
At the beginning of this season we started with approximately £ 1700.
The reason for such a LOW BALANCE is that subsidies for this season, including Stoneham Park (provisional
£250) and Captain’s Weekend (£900), will have totalled well over £2000. Also, although both the Christmas Raffle
and Race Night were successful, they didn’t raise as much as in previous years.
Full annual accounts will be produced after Captain’s Weekend & published in the September Newsletter.
AGM It is proposed to hold the AGM (as in previous years) on the morning of our last
medal day – this is in order to ensure a quorum.
FIXTURES Last chance to move up the League Table is : FRIDAY 23rd

NEXT SEASON
Barry Phillips (Fixtures Sec) and the committee would like to know your views for venues
next season. Below is a table of courses played during the past 11 years.
PLEASE look at the venues and highlight your top 10 preferences OR include any
possible NEW COURSES – we like to have one or two during the season but there aren’t
many now, that we haven’t played at that are roughly within an HOUR’S drive and NOT
TOO EXPENSIVE.
Please e-mail BARRY your preferences or write down a list and give to Barry at
Stoneham Park (next medal) if going.

1. ALL matches are MATCHPLAY format. Regarding
Handicaps :
3/4 difference between lowest and highest.
2. Responsibility of FIRST DRAWN name to choose
venue and arrange match.
3. Every effort should be made to complete matches in
“good time” by COMPLETITION DATE indicated and not
leave it to the last moment.
4. With agreement matches can be played on Medal
Days but this is not ideal.
5. The committee have the right to amend or extend
any previous COMPLETION DATES stated by which
matches should be played,
if there are relevant/particular circumstances.
6. Due to particular circumstances, if a player wishes
for a one month extension (maximum) to play his match,
he must make the request to the secretary as soon as
possible and make clear the reasons. The committee will
let the players involved know their decision within one
week of receiving the request.
7. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, the
TOSS of a COIN or NUMBER of ATTENDANCES at
MEDAL DAYS will decide the outcome of any matches
NOT played by the stated COMPLETION DATE. The
Committee’s decision is final.
8. MATCH REPORTS – the secretary would welcome
reports for inclusion in the Newsletter (serious or
amusing).
Don’t leave it until the last minute – BOOK

JUNE 2013 BURNHAM BEECHES RREEPPOORRTT FRIDAY 28th JUNE 18 members 0 guest
IITT JJUUSSTT CCOOUULLDDNN’’TT
BBEE AANNYY TTIIGGHHTTEERR With just two medals left, the race
for the League Title couldn’t be
closer. Barry Phillips and Lee
Challis (left), who shared the
Trophy two years ago, are level on
181 pts. However, a jubilant Keith
Nicholls (right) after his
unbelievable win at Burnham
Beeches with 40pts, sits just 8 pts
behind, and jumping into 4th spot from 7th is a
very happy looking Andy Halstead (joint Runner-Up at Burnham - left) on a
late charge, some 13 pts adrift – could it be lucky 13 ?
But the interesting factor is, that with only the “best seven” medal days counting,
they can all achieve well over 190 pts with 2 further good performances -
2 wins & the max they can achieve are : Barry 200, Lee 199, Keith 199 & Andy 195.
Should they all SPLIP UP THOUGH, our Captain could muster a maximum of 186
and pip all of them, but what’s the chance of that ???? ZERO !
OOTTHHEERR TTAABBLLEESS EEQQUUAALLLLYY CCLLOOSSEE Keith Nicholls has zoomed into top spot in the ECLECTIC TABLE
on 57, 2 ahead of Ricky Cox & Andy Whitehurst, whilst 4th is
shared by no less than 4 others – Dave Evans, Lee Challis, Richard
Davies & Andy Halstead. The WINNER will no doubt come from
one of these seven.
It appears that Lee Challis has the MERIT TABLE sewn up, way
ahead of everyone else, mainly due to winning the LONGEST
DRIVE 4 times this year AND getting a number of NEAREST-the-
PINS too . . . . all fluked I heard !
Julian Moss & Dave Evans have each won the WFTTS twice, whilst
Adrian Couchman is in a League of his own – 5 WOODEN
SPOONS, 7 HIGHEST GROSS SCORES, 6 GREATEST BLOBS and
6 HIGHEST NET SCORES . . . but . . . . . he is the only member to
record a FIVE POINTER – so clearly, there is definitely a golfer in
there somewhere !
Needless to say, the top 4 in the League are also the BOTTOM 4 in
the MR BLOBBY TABLE – pretty obvious who’s top. After taking
a commanding lead early on in the season, Richard Davies is just about holding on to the MR BIRDIE Title,
but is now being put under tremendous pressure from Keith Nicholls, Ricky Cox & Dave Miners.
OTHER NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS Again, in anticipation of a certain member
getting the Wooden Spoon yet again – he didn’t
disappoint – we awarded a Runner-Up Spoon –
went to JON AXON (left) with a disastrous 19
pts, 4 better than you know who !
Despite arriving full of confidence after last
month’s win, IAN BROWN couldn’t repeat his
previous performance, just the 29 pts this
time, but as you can see from the photo
(right), he was still full of smiles.
The two ALEXs, WINTERS & STACEY, both
tried hard to win the WFTTS, Winters coming
out on top, just ! However, Stacey displayed
his true potential with the joint best back 9 on the day, a massive 22 pts
– double his front 9 !
Also, new member, DAVID PARSONS was on a roll after 9, 21 pts. Sadly
though, his stamina deserted him and just a measly 13 was all he
could muster coming home. He’s definitely one to look out for next season !
RICHARD DAVIES smashed a magnificent drive 280 yards straight down the middle of the 18th
fairway to win the
Longest Drive and LEE CHALLIS was Nearest-the-Pin, not just at the official hole (13th
), but also at the 17th
too.
ANDY WHITEHURST and KEITH NICHOLLS recorded TWOs and the best group was BARRY, KEITH & DAVID P
with a very respectable average and highest of the season so far, 35.33 pts.

JUST 2 MEDALS TO GO – will you beat any of the above at
Stoneham Park or Oxford City (Southfields) ? GO ON HAVE A GO !!!
CAPTAIN’S CORNER . . . RICK’S RAVES ARE BACK ! Burnham Beeches
Cracking course choice Barry, fairways and greens where excellent, food
was good plus staff helpful. After a very shaky 1st hole my golf improved -
I’m sure due to the company of my playing partners (Peter and Steve) who
pushed me to an excellent joint 2nd place, pipped only by the very steady
play of Keith. Can’t believe Adrian got another wooden spoon after his great
1st tee shot.
Hope to see as many of you as possible at my Captain’s Choice, Stoneham
on the 19th July. The course is in great condition and very testing (even for
me), especially the greens. Also, we hope to play off the WHITE tees to
make it REALLY CHALLENGING !
See you on 19th

MERIT TABLE POINTS
The first 10 in order of finishing on each medal day receive 10 – 1 points.
The Longest Drive on each medal day receives 5 points.
All the Par 3 holes count on each medal day, with the Nearest-the-Pin at each, receiving 5 points.
TO BE DECIDED WHETHER BEST AVERAGE OR HIGHEST TOTAL WINS AT THE END OF THE SEASON, irrespective of how
many medals played, or possibly need to have played a minimum number of medals to be considered.
WFFTS Dave Evans OCT / topped, sliced 7 yards into rockery – buried in clump of heather
(HOTLY disputed as Stephen Wood had an AIR SHOT but this was discounted as he didn’t actually hit
the ball and therefore was deemed by the extremely biased members present to class it as “not a shot” !)
Andy Beal NOV / a beauty of a hook . . . . or perhaps he was attempting an “Ian Breakspear” and it went
straight . . . Out of bounds ! (NB: Lee also went OOB too, but his was longer than Andy’s)
Julian Moss A nice hook right . . . . right into HEDGE adjacent to tee-box, 30 yards, buried ! (NB: Dave Miners
also went into the same hedge but his was 31 yards AND Andy Whitehurst toyed with the hedge,
skimming it for 10 yards before it somehow found its way onto the fairway)
Dave Evans FEB / Legitimately winning this time . . . or was it ? As Dave Miners put it . . . . “SHITE TO THE RIGHT” !
Vince West MAR/ Wondeful straight (I was told) strike – not sure which part of club though – didn’t go far . . .
about 15 yds ! (Andy Halstead was the other contender although it is reported that guest ace Nick Castle
had TWO AIR SHOTS at the first !)
Julian Moss APR/ A very uninspiring straight topped drive just stopping past the ladies’ tee – 30 yards !
Simon Powis MAY/ Nicely topped clip shot to the right at 37½0 onto the 18
th hole fairway some 37½ yards
2nd
shot was similar too ! IN FACT, could probably say that about almost all other 104 shots !
Alex Winters JUN/ A typical topped hooked heading straight for 2ft high rough but, due to vicious clockwise spin,
The ball suddenly veered right at the last moment settling down in just the 3 inch rough.
The other Alex (Stacey) hit an almost identical shot but his was straighter and 3 yards further.

DRESS CODE The policy of Stoneham Golf Club is to set a smart yet congenial atmosphere alongside the traditions and heritage of our great game. Please assist us by ensuring that you and your guests adhere to this policy when visiting the Club The Club House Lounge
The minimum standard is smart casual clean clothing at all times - no golf shoes, spiked or otherwise, hats, wet or soiled clothing or golfing rainwear Restaurant
Formal dress (jacket & tie or equivalent) is required after 7pm on each evening. Clean golf wear is acceptable during the day. Shorts may be worn in the Restaurant until 7pm. Golfing rainwear or outdoor clothing is not acceptable.
ALL GOLFERS MUST CHANGE OUT OF THE CLOTHES IN WHICH THEY HAVE PLAYED GOLF.
The Course
Smart golfing clothing, which may include tailored shorts not brightly patterned and with a length not more than three inches above the knee. Shirts are to be tucked in at all times. Gentlemen, when playing in shorts, may wear either predominantly white ankle length sports socks or long single colour hose socks. SHOE LINER SOCKS ARE NOT APPROPRIATE Proper golfing footwear is to be worn Unacceptable Dress
The following forms of dress are deemed to be unacceptable anywhere on the course or premises:
Stockinged or bare feet
Football/rugby shirts & shorts, trainers including tennis shoes & tracksuits
Tee shirts or shirts without collars
Denim clothing
Cargo pants, combat trousers & trousers with drawstring waists or legs
The wearing of shirts outside trousers
Wearing hats back to front or indoors The manager and his staff are required to determine the appropriateness of dress both on and off the course and in such cases their decision is final. Members are reminded that they are responsible for the conduct and behaviour, which includes dress, of their guests. Failure to observe either the spirit or the letter of these rules may result in a Member or Visitor being asked to leave the Club premises Mobile phones are not permitted on the course or the clubhouse We Thank You For Your Cooperation
The course at Stoneham is laid out over a beautiful undulating landscape which is a
combination of heathland and parkland.
Of the long par- 4s the 4th is exhilarating, driving out over heather before plunging
steeply downhill. A stream crossing 100 yards short of the green should not be of
concern to most golfers.
The 11th involves a sizeable carry over a cross-bunker from the tee followed by an
uncompromising approach over a deep gully to a green perched on a ledge on the far
side.
The Club employs a 3 colour system to indicate the position of the flag on the green.
Red indicates a flag on the front third of the green, with yellow for the middle third and
white for the back third. 150 yards to the centre of the green is marked on either side of
the fairway by wooden posts with yellow tops.
