Huskies Fight Hunger is a food-packaging event hosted by Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. in partnership with Feeding Children Everywhere, a social charity that seeks to mobilize and empower people in the community to fight hunger. In its third year running, this project was joined by Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Vietnamese Students Association, and the North Area Coun-cil.

11.9% of homes in Connecticut are considered ‘food-insecure,’ meaning they cannot provide the three necessary meals re-quired every day. Hunger can stunt growth and development and decrease mood. However, the lentil casserole developed at Feeding Children Everywhere may be the key to ending world hunger! Packed with essential vitamins and minerals, this deli-cious meal costs only $0.25!

In the months leading up to the event, these student organizations worked tirelessly to fundraise money, recruit volunteers, and raise awareness about hunger. To raise awareness about hunger, 62 students pledged to abstain from eating and drinking, with the exception of water, during the Day of Hunger. The total amount of money raised was $5,000.

On November 9, 2014, hundreds of UConn students gathered at the Greer Field House for Huskies Fight Hunger in a fun-filled morning to package 20,000 meals. All meals were sent to local food banks in the Greater Hartford Area, where they were dis-tributed to families in need.

Zeta Beta Tau: North Eagleville Clean-up

ZBT held its Semesterly community service road clean-up of Zeta Beta Tau’s adopt-

ed road (North Eagleville road) in Storrs Connecticut. We had a showing of 20 brothers on

the morning of Saturday the 15th of November who cleaned the sidewalks/road from

UConn’s police stations all the way down to Northwood apartments on North Eagleville

road. Also, ZBT has elected the 2015 Executive board, with the addition of three new po-

sitions which include Internal Vice President, External Vice President, and Event Coordi-

nator.

Tau Kappa Epsilon: Wally’s Fundraiser

On Monday November 17th the broth-ers of Tau Kappa Epsilon held a fund-raiser at Wally’s Chicken Coop for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Being founded by a TKE alumnus, St. Judes remains an important cause that is dear to the heart of every brother. The event raised over $100 and will be the first of several fundraisers. Many thanks to the great staff at Wally’s and everyone Greek and unaffiliated that came out to help a great cause.

Senior Spotlight

Although it’s hard to pick only one senior to nominate for

this spotlight within the Alpha Phi organization, Cassan-

dra Dahms has gone above and beyond within the Greek

Community and deserves to be recognized for her work

and dedication. There is nobody who is a better example

of a constant demonstration of the Greek Pillars that we

strive to maintain here at UConn. In regards to scholar-

ship, Cassi is a member of the school of NEAG with a dou-

ble major in History and even studied abroad in London

this past summer. She was a recipient of the OFSL Aca-

demic Achievement award and upon graduating in May,

Cassi plans on studying abroad for an entire semester at

the University of Nottingham. Despite having to balance

student teaching and her courses, she still manages to be

a truly inspirational leader within Alpha Phi, another pil-

lar in our Greek Community. For the past two calendar

years, Cassi has been a member of the executive board as

the Vice President of Risk Management. During her term,

she has consistently been committed to the betterment

of the chapter. Working with the Director of Watchcare,

Director of Chapter Events and Director of Media Man-

agement, she has done whatever she needed to improve

our organization and ensure that all chapter events are safe. This past year she even imple-

mented a new Emergency Procedure Plan so members will always be out of harm’s way. She

was also a member of the Recruitment Management Team, giving up the Alpha Phi letters

that she wears so well, to help new members find their Greek homes. Along with her leader-

ship within the Greek Community, she is also on the HuskyTHON management team as Di-

rector of Dancer Relations. Her love of children and giving back has encouraged students at

UConn to participate in one of the largest fundraisers in the state of Connecticut, showing

her devotion to service. Cassi truly does it all, and as sad as Alpha Phi is to see her graduate,

we are both thankful and extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to watch her

prosper and lead the organization. Alpha Phi loves you Cassi and wishes you nothing but the

best in the years to come!

Cassandra Dahms
