THIS WEEK: The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves will carry the momentum from last week’s tour-nament into the Brice Alaska Goal Rush in Fairbanks on Oct. 14-15 at the Carlson Center. SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: The Nebraska Omaha Mav-ericks (1-1-0) and the Mercyhurst Lakers (0-2-0) both enter the BAGR tournament after competing in the Mutual of Omaha Stam-pede on Oct. 7-8 ... the Mavericks and Lakers faced off on Oct. 7 with UNO winning, 5-1 ... the Mavericks got two goals from sophomore F Brock Montpetit in the win ... KENDALL HOCKEY CLASSIC RECAP: UAA will enter this weekend’s tournament after winning its own Kendall Hockey Classic on Oct. 7-8 ... the Seawolves captured their sixth overall title and first since 2006 with a 4-3 overtime win over WCHA member St. Cloud State in non-conference action on Oct. 8 ... in addition to the come-from-behind vic-tory against the Huskies, the Seawolves tied Clark-son in overtime on Oct. 7, 4-4 ... to help determine a tournament champion, the teams competed in a three-person shoot-out with UAA winning, 1-0 ... the Seawolves were propelled to victory by junior F Mickey Spencer, who posted a six-point weekend, including a hat trick in the championship game.

SEAWOLF BITES: The Seawolves started the 2011-12 campaign undefeated with a 1-0-1 record in non-conference play ... during the season opener, the Seawolves outshot Clarkson, 41-23 – the last time UAA posted 40+ shots was on Oct. 18, 2008 (44) against Mercyhurst in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush ... throughout the tournament, the Seawolves were 3-10 on the man advantage and led the league over the weekend in that category, while finishing third in the nation ... UAA is also tied for 2nd in scoring offense (4 g/gm) in the league and tied for 8th in the nation ... UAA had nine Seawolves tallied points over the weekend, with six skaters having multi-point weekends ... since current bench boss Dave Shyiak took over the reins in 2005-06, the Seawolves have started 1-0-1 in four campaigns (2006-07, 2007-08, 2010-11, 2011-12).

2011-12 SEASON PREVIEW: UAA is coming off its second-best campaign since joining the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in 1993, and will look to carry the momentum from last season into this one ... with the addition of eight newcomers, the Seawolves will have 28 skaters sporting the Green & Gold as they look to achieve their yearly goals – win the Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup and in-season tournaments, gain home-ice in the playoffs and make a run at the WCHA’s Red Baron Final Five tournament in St. Paul ... the Seawolves will have plenty of offense returning to the ice, including six of their top 10 scorers from a year ago, while adding five newcomers ... paving the way will be a pair of sophomores in Jordan Kwas and Matt Bailey ... a local of Cochrane, Alberta, Kwas was UAA’s second-leading scorer last season with 24 points, while leading UAA in assists with 20 ... Bailey, who hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba, produced 10-10—20 totals in 30 games, despite missing the last seven with an injury, and was UAA’s fourth-best point producer ... patrolling the blueline will be five returners who allowed 26.2 shots per game in 2010-11 – UAA’s third-best since joining the league ... leading the Seawolf pack with 10 points last year are senior Curtis Leinweber (4-6—10), from Calgary, Alberta, and junior Scott Warner (3-7—10). Senior Brad Gorham chipped in six points, while sophomore linemates Wes McLeod and Quinn Sproule combined for nine points ... in the crease, the Seawolves return a solid pair in sophomores Rob Gunderson and Chris Kamal ... Gunderson (Lethbridge, Alberta) and Kamal (Alpharetta, Ga.) split time last season with each backstopping UAA to multiple successes ... Gunderson wrapped up the season with a 7-13-2 overall record and a .897 save percentage that tied for No. 8 on UAA’s all-time single-season list, while Kamal added a winning record of 9-5-1, a 2.62 goals-against average and three shutouts.

UAA CAPTAINS: Leading UAA as co-captains this season will be seniors Brad Gorham and Jade Portwood and juniors Chris Crowell and Scott Warner.

WCHA REALIGNMENT: The 2013-14 edition of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association will change dramatically with the addition of new teams and other WCHA teams forming new leagues ... to date, the WCHA will be comprised of eight teams – UAA, Alaska Fairbanks, Bemidji State, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota State and Northern Michigan ... currently, the WCHA has an invitation out to Bowling Green to join the league ... joining the National Collegiate Hockey Conference from the WCHA is Colorado College, Denver, Minnesota Duluth, Nebraska Omaha, North Dakota and St. Cloud State, while Minnesota and Wisconsin will be a part of the Big Ten Conference.

NEW ASSISTANT COACH: T.J. Jindra joins Dave Shyiak’s staff as the Sea-wolves’ new assistant hockey coach ... Jindra comes to UAA from the University of Notre Dame, where he played for four seasons from 2003-07 and served as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2010-11 campaign ... after graduating from Notre Dame in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Jindra spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minn., where he worked with some of the nation’s most talented prep players ... as a player at Notre Dame, he was part of two NCAA Tournament teams and played in 150 career games, scoring 12 goals and 24 assists. He was a two-year team captain for the Fighting Irish, including his senior season when ND won a school-record 32 games and captured the program’s first-ever Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season and tournament titles ... Jindra replaces Ryan McKelvie, who accepted the head coaching position at Lake Forest (Ill.) College.
