Dear Like-Minded Friend,

When I think about those in our community who I am most grateful for, it’s absolutely our farmers who are dedicated to raising animals and crops with love. Real food is our life force. It’s our means to not just surviving, but THRIVING in today’s world.

My journey towards natural health started over a decade ago. Like any journey, mine has been filled with twists and turns, tears and laughter, celebrations and losses. Once I connected the dots that food is the root to our health – our ultimate MEDICINE – I’ve been on a mission to expand my knowledge one book, one conversation, one lesson at a time.

While today you’ll find me nourishing my body (and my family) with organic veggies and fruit, grass-fed, locally sourced meats, homemade raw butter and other happy, wholesome fats, eggs from backyard chicks, sauerkraut and other fermented loves, bone broth, and using an abundance of essential oils and herbs, I’ll be perfectly honest... it didn’t happen overnight. The love and kindness that I show my body today didn’t come full circle until I became pregnant with my son at the age of 29.

From mainstream, Standard American Diet (low-fat/diet everything), to vegan, to clean eating fanatic, to Paleo, to Primal, to dropping all labels and simply honoring nourishment. I’ve been there. I’ve done that. And today, you won’t find me wearing a dietary label, as I’ve learned it’s far more powerful and effective to tune into your body each and every day and choose those foods (rooted in nourishment) that will serve you most – in that moment. Ahhh… Freedom!

I live this lifestyle as authentically as I can to continue to feel my absolute best AND inspire those that I serve. This lifestyle would not be possible without my farmers. It’s thanks to them that I am able to enjoy seasonal, freshly picked, organic produce bursting with medicinal value and have a freezer full of grass-fed meats, raised just as if I cared for that animal myself. It’s important to me that the food that goes into my body was created with love. That’s the kind of energy I want going into my food. That’s the type of energy I want going into my body.

I am passionate about helping people from all walks of life take back their health. And this, as you know, starts with REAL food. Time and time again, my clients express that the biggest struggle they face is finding local resources to support them on their journey to overhaul their lifestyle. And while, I personally have incredible resources, my area is often not convenient for my clients. SO, it was beyond time that this guide was created. A start. To help me connect my clients and friends to resources right in their backyard.

While compiling this information, I was astounded by how many amazing resources we have right here in West Michigan. I can’t wait for you to connect with a Farmer near you. It’ll change your life.

To honoring your health fiercely,

You need this information NOW to make those important decisions including securing your CSA and making many of your initial meat orders. Please consider this information as a start… We’ll continue to perfect it and add farmers to the list as we are able to make those key connections and have those conversations.

In a perfect world, I’d love to say my team visited each farm and saw the magic that happens on the land first-hand. We’ll get there. But for now, we asked some tough questions regarding farming values and practices and settled on face-to-face visits at the farmers’ market, thoughtful email exchanges, or phone conversations. Several of these responses were so heartfelt that we included them in the guide, word for word.

We feel really good about each and every listing in this book. Some of these listings are hobby farmers just trying to give a little back to their community, others are operating a larger practice and still doing what they can to uphold the integrity of doing it right by Mama Earth and future generations. You’ll need to lean into your intuition, do some farm visits, ask the questions that matter most for you - and then begin a relationship with those farmers who you resonate with and trust. The good news is there are so many amazing options to choose from! Truly, we are blessed to be surrounded by so many incredible people who make so many sacrifices to gift us honest, to goodness, nourishment.

We ask for your grace in this first production. If you catch a typo or error, please simply email us at [email protected] and we’ll get that corrected right away.

WHAT IS A CSA?

For over 25 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer.

Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

This arrangement creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer. In brief:

ADVANTAGES FOR FARMERS:• Get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, before their 16 hour days in the

field begin• Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm’s cash flow• Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow

ADVANTAGES FOR CONSUMERS:• Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits• Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking• Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season• Find that kids typically favor food from “their” farm even veggies they’ve never been

known to eat• Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food and learn more about how

food is grown

POTENTIAL QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CSA• What are your values as a farmer?• Tell me a bit about your farming practices?• How long have you been offering a CSA program?• Are there items in your box grown by other farms, and if so, which farms?• How did last season go?• How many members do you have?• How do you communicate with/educate your members?

Before purchasing a membership with a farm, please be sure to check with the farmer on expectations of you in this partnership. For instance, some CSAs are working farms, meaning you get your hands dirty.

Plainsong FarmROCKFORD, MI

This farm currently practices sustainable farming and is working towards an organic certification. To fertilize, Plainsong Farm uses only organic fertilizers: mostly focusing on compost, green manures and occasionally boosting specific plants that are in need of more nutrients. Pest and disease management first occurs by trying to avoid them with consistent crop rotation and proper plant spacing. If this isn’t effective then hands on bug-squashing, pruning and pulling of plants is completed to prevent spreading of disease or pests. Plainsong Farm does its best to encourage beneficial insects that aid in pest control.

Woodbridge DairyBYRON CENTER, MI

Woodbridge Dairy feeds their livestock with all non-GMO grain that is chemical-free and 90% of it is raised on the farm: dairy cattle are fed hay, baleage, silage, small amount of grain with mineral mixed in; beef cattle are fed hay, baleage, and silage in winter; pigs are fed hay, grain with mineral mixed in; poultry are fed hay, grain with minerals (calcium, kelp). During the warm season all animals have pastures with some having more freedom than others. The animals are sheltered in barns or houses on pastures depending on the type of animal. Woodbridge Dairy chooses to do animal husbandry holistically and the last resort would be medication as they won’t watch an animal suffer and die if it can be prevented. This has rarely been the case and consumers are informed. The farmers at Woodbridge Dairy honor their animals, naming them all as they believe this shows respect for the sacrifice of that animal’s life in order to nourish your body.

“Meat should be a condiment, not the meal. It takes less time to raise a carrot then it does an animal.”– Farmer’s Wife

Pests and disease on the farm are managed by the ducks and chickens who do bug patrol and crop rotation. In addition to meat and eggs this farm also offers a herd share for raw milk. Notably, if you spend enough time getting to know the farmers and happen to be at the farm during calf season you maybe lucky enough to name a calf.

Moorman Family FarmsBYRON CENTER, MI

This is a small family farm that strictly purchases non-GMO seeds and practices organic growing methods. Growing food without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers is incred-ibly important to the farmers at Moorman Farms. Neem oil is used to protect against disease and/or bugs, however larger pests like the hornworm are simply picked off the plants by hand and potato beetles are deterred by leaving the plants covered as long as possible. If this method is ineffective, an organically approved spray is used.

Groundswell FarmZEELAND, MI

At Groundswell’s main farm site they do not use very much fertilizer at all because the soil is over 50% organic matter. It is very similar to farming in pure compost. The second farm site is very sandy and a manure based compost is applied in the fall which follows the organic standard. They also add up to 35 yards of leaf and grass compost per acre in the spring. At planting time or thereafter a side dressing of feather meal is added. Some crops like tomatoes also require the addition of bone meal at this site. Pest control measures rely on a thin fabric to keep pests off the crops in their tender early stages. Crops are rotated between the two sites to interrupt pest and disease cycles. BT and Spinosad is used once a year to control pests.

Eighth Day FarmZEELAND, MI

This farm practices regenerative farming. They amend the soil with compost that is made on site from spent beer grain from a couple local breweries, coffee grounds from Lemonjellos coffee and leaves from local lawn crews. Then, depending on the crop, sometimes a mix of chicken manure, Kelp meal, rock phosphate or gypsum is added. Occasionally water with a little bit of fish emulsion is added to the watering can. Pests and diseases are primarily treated culturally. On rare occasion, an OMRI certified spray (the gentlest available) is used.

Blackbird FarmsCOOPERSVILLE, MI

Blackbird Farms applies fertilizer in the spring with locally sourced compost (from I.B. Compost in Zeeland) and organic pelleted chicken manure premixed with mineral amendments (from Morgan’s in Grant) as per a soil experts recommendations for that season. Throughout the season, this is supplemented with fish and kelp emulsion applied through the farm’s drip irrigation system. Pests and disease are managed by breaking the cycle through intentional crop rotation and end-of-season clean cultivation. They work hard to ensure high levels of soil health and fertility, thereby growing healthier, more disease resistant plants. Non-GMO plant varieties are selected based on their natural disease resistance. Blackbird Farms also encourages native populations of predatory insects by planting flowers attractive to beneficial insects and as a last resort, applying OMRI-approved, narrow spectrum insecticides and fungicides. The Declercq HomesteadGRAND RAPIDS, MI

This homestead offers organic fed chickens from a limited flock. The laying hens and meat chickens are fed organic feed as well as kitchen scraps and all the bugs and plants they’d like from the woods and barnyard. The laying flock is primarily free range through the woods and barnyard. A few times a year they are “confined” in an electric poultry netting to “work” in the garden by tilling, clearing bugs from the produce and fertilizing the soil for the next growing season. The meat chickens are kept in a sizable portable tractor that is moved twice daily. Once they are large enough to not escape through the holes of the electric poultry net fencing, they have access to the larger paddock during the day. No medications or hormones are given to the birds. The Declercq family value and appreciate the chickens as a part of their small homestead. Delivery to Grand Rapids is available.

“We have 3-4 different beef farmers from around West Michigan (Coopersville, Ludington & Mt. Pleasant). All of the beef we sell at the shop is 100% Grass-fed and finished, they are antibiotic and hormone free, and live outside their entire life. The pastures they live on are no-til paddocks that are planted with grasses and legumes in organic methods. Our pigs come from one farm in Coopersville, they are Berkshire breed, that receive a Non-GMO diet. The chickens we sell are from the same farm and are raised on pasture, and also feed a Non-GMO diet. We also get eggs from this same farmer, that are incredible. Lamb comes from a small family farm in Zeeland, they are on pasture their entire lives. I can tell you that I have personally been on every one of these farms, and have very frequent conversations with these farmers about everything they do to raise the animals. “S & S LambMCBAIN, MI

The animals at S and S Lamb (a fourth generation farm) eat a healthy balance of hay and grains. They also have access to pastures on the farm. The fields have never been treated with chemical fertilizers, only the composted manure that the animals create. The hay is harvested at the farm as well and the grain is non-GMO whenever available. The ewes and lambs live at S and S Lamb. The cattle live at a neighboring farm, 3 miles away. In addition to the lambs, a few pigs also live on the farm. S and S Lamb has never used hormones, supplements or additives on any of the animals. Antibiotics are used only when the life of an animal requires it and thus far that has been .05% of the time.

“Years ago, my dad said to me, “Sharon, do not name your animals”. I failed at that. :) Yes, some have names. Some we talk about even though they are no longer here on the farm, such as Annie our Jersey milk cow. She was a love. And Annabelle who was the first orphan lamb we ever cared for. There was Sara Lee our beef mom who was so sweet. Today we have Percy the Ram; Mr. Mis-souri, another ram because he is from Missouri; Apple the ewe, who was orphaned by her mother and to this day knows I have grain in my pocket (or an apple) for her. There is Bessie the dorper and our White Russian mamma ewe who looks like an old Russian lady, but don’t tell her that. We have Lily, Lei, and Edna Mae, our Saanen goats who serve as nurse mothers if we need them to be. So yes, our farm animals are our family. Many times we have taken a chilled lamb into the house and sat with it until it’s warmed and ready to be back with it’s mamma. Pampers are always in the bathroom cupboard just in case we need to diaper one. :) My dad didn’t want me to become too attached to an animal by naming it. I get that. We (well, mostly us girls) have shed many a tear when a named animals time to leave the farm came around. But that is what makes a farmer.” – Sharon

Plainsong Farms has never and never will use any hormones when raising animals for meat on the farm. They have not yet needed to use any medication and believe in preventative care: that proper rotation of animals, fresh pasture, quality feed, and clean bedding can help keep the animals healthy. Plainsong Farm believes giving their animals names is a way to honor and appreciate them and while they are indeed raising them to an end, the quality and appropriateness of their life is very important to them.

Legacy PolyculturesSAND LAKE, MI

The hogs at Legacy Polycultures are rotated on pasture to forage (raspberry and blackberry root and berries) and given supplemental non-GMO, no-soy feed mixture from the Cedar Springs Elevator and Feed Mill. They are also looking to secure a source of milk products, perhaps the Amish Cheese House to add to the pigs diet. Future plans also include experimenting with fermented feeds, a Korean Natural Farming style. They will be given chestnuts and apples in the fall. The farm will use a certified humane abattoir in West Michigan for processing. When it does come time for the pigs to “graduate”, it is always the hardest time, emotionally as Legacy Polycultures does name the pigs.

“I totally understand the vegan arguments and where they are coming from, but I still feel the need to feed my family as humans have evolved to be fed. Monocultured Soyburger and lab grown meat isn’t going to cut it. Feeding us responsibly in these times is more difficult than it should be, but it is possible.”

Two Sparrows Farm and DairyLOWELL, MI

Two Sparrows Farm and Dairy feeds all of their animals 100% non-GMO feed with grain and locally grown grass. Specifically, this is how they feed their livestock: Jersey Dairy Cows - Grass fed. They graze May-December and are fed non-GMO hay December - April. They receive a small amount of local, non-GMO grain during milking (about 3 lbs/day/cow). Grass-fed Beef - 100% grass-fed. They graze the same schedule as the dairy cows and are fed the same hay but are not given grain. Pastured Berkshire Pork - Are born and nursed by mom for 8-9 weeks before weaning onto pasture. They are fed local, non-GMO grain in addition to milk from the dairy, extra veggies, etc. Pastured Poultry - Are free-range and forage for much of their diet and are supplemented with local, non-GMO feed and veggies. The Jersey Dairy Cows and Grass fed Beef live outside every day of the year. They have barn access in the winter with free stall sand beds to give them a clean, warm place to sleep out of the snow and ice. The Pastured Berkshire Sows farrow in the barn with deep straw pens. Once piglets are weaned they move outside to pasture with a pen for shelter. The pastured chickens have a coop year-round that moves to different locations on the farm. Turkeys also have a portable shelter for the season. This farm doesn’t use any growth hormones or prophylactic antibiotics. In general, Two Sparrows Farm and Dairy works diligently to respect and honor each animal, even taking the time to name the dairy cows. They work to ensure that each animal has a life and death that reflects their values and principles. They see their animals as a beautiful and integral part of our food production system and love and care for them during their time on the farm.

Bristol Family FarmCLIMAX, MI

Bristol Family Farm seeks to humanely raise 100% grass-fed beef, free from antibiotics, artificial growth hormones and GMOs, in an earth-loving way. They purchase young beef animals from a neighboring farm who raises the calves without antibiotics or hormones. The calves at that farm nurse from their mommas and eat only natural grass from the pastures. When they arrive at Bristol Family Farm, they continue in this lifestyle, eating only natural grass. During the winter, they source locally grown, non-GMO grass hay that is free from herbicides and pesticides for the animals. The pastures at the farm that the animals graze on were previously untouched land and have never been exposed to GMOs, pesticides, herbicides, or anything except fresh air, sunshine, and the wildlife surrounding our farm. The beef animals live on the farm in Climax, MI. The farmer, Brett, grew up on this farm and his parents still live in the farmhouse there. The cows spend most of their time in the large, fenced-in pasture of lush grass. There is a group of trees in the pasture that they like to congregate under when it is particularly hot, and they also have access to the barn in case they want to rest inside when the weather is particularly fierce. The farm is surrounded by marshy areas and lots of woods. Both farmers have degrees in Animal Science and use this education to implement practices that thus far have negated the need to use any antibiotics. This has also been achieved by small herd size (low “stocking density”), and the ability to spend most of their time in the fresh air. In the event of an infection or illness this farm works with a veterinarian to treat the animal in a natural way, but they would choose to use antibiotics if holistic methods fail and they are deemed necessary. While they have not used antibiotics before on the farm, they would certainly market that specific animal differ-ently when it came to slaughter because consumer transparency and understanding is a priority for their business. They do not use hormones on the farm. They care deeply for their animals. They often name the animals once they arrive on the farm, and their personalities and characteristics start to become apparent.

“Woodbridge DairyBYRON CENTER, MI

This small family farm raises pigs, meat birds and laying chickens. They source their feed from a local Amish store that is GMO-free. It is not certified organic but it has been verified to be GMO-free. All of the animals are raised outdoors on sunshine and fresh air. They do not use any medication or hormones and animals are treated herbally when necessary. This small family farm raises their animals with love - the pigs get names and all. As of 2016, they use no-till method and crop rotation to avoid disease in their garden. Round-up or any kind of spray is not used on the vegetables. Instead companion planting is utilized in hopes of deterring pests. Chicken and cow manure is used on the garden to add nutrients back to the soil. Hidden Creek FarmMUSKEGON, MI

This farm produces all of its plants and animals without the use of GMOs, pesticides, herbicides, hormones, steroids, or antibiotics. Just simple pure organic happiness. They believe that pigs should be able to be pigs and that means rooting and running around in the fresh open pasture and woodlot. They focus mostly on pasture feeding with lots of veggies, eggs and raw milk from the farm’s chickens and goats. The small amount of grain that the pigs do get is certified organic or non-GMO. Hidden Creek Farm feeds their goats a fermented alfalfa which is great for digestion and milk production, along with lots of fresh pasture greens throughout the summer or organic hay in the winter. The milk cows also get a grain supplement which consists of oats, barley and sunflower seeds that are hand-ground and mixed. The chickens, ducks and quail are raised directly on pasture and are rotated weekly from spring to fall to ensure they get lots of good greens and bugs. All of the broiler chickens are raised outdoors, spring to fall on pasture and are moved to new ground daily to forage. All lambs are born at the farm and are raised to the age of 9 to 11 months then moved to pasture spring through fall until they are ready for harvest. The turkeys are free range all summer on the pasture until they are ready for harvest a few days before Thanksgiving. The cows are 100% grain free and fed pasture and forage from spring to fall and feed local organic hay in the winter. At the time of publication (April, 2017) this farmer could not be reached. Note from Tonya: This farm is near and dear to my heart as it’s thanks to them that I had a nourishing option to make homemade formula for my little one. I pick up milk weekly and use it make ice-cream, butter and homemade yogurt. If this farm is local to you, I HIGHLY recommend checking out.

Raw milk is one of the most beautifully nourishing substances on the planet.

We do not advocate purchasing commercial, ultra-pasteurized milk or dairy products for that matter. However, raw pastured milk is a different story all together! We absolutely encourage you to incorporate raw pastured milk into your family’s diet. If milk is part of your lifestyle, I highly suggest switching to raw and enjoying all of medicinal benefits. Raw milk is full of vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats and beneficial gut bacteria! You’ll use your raw milk and cream for a gazillion purposes – butter, whipped cream, ice cream, yogurt, cheese and so much more!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPONSOR:

Cassie French Owner of Vital Nutrition From one real food lover to another, I’m glad you’re here. My name is Cassie and I’m the owner of Vital Nutrition in Rockford, and I’m super excited to meet you!

My real food journey has evolved immensely over the years, and now that I am nourishing three little people I’m more passionate about it than ever. Our next generation needs to know how to deeply nourish their bodies and raise or cultivate clean, safe food. Unfortunately, society and our children are more sick and diseased than ever before.

I demand better for my daughters.

Restoring health happens in the kitchen, it happens with education. It happens when nutritional truths are revealed, and the myths are debunked. We go the extra mile in our home to obtain the food we value. Grass-fed and pasture raised meats, fresh eggs, raw milk and locally grown seasonal produce are what we are after. We say no thank you to GMO’s, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and poor care of animals and land. It brings me joy to patronize our local farmers and feed into our local economy. At Vital Nutrition, we work tirelessly to stock the shelves that “fill in” what we are no longer able to get from our food. Much of what you’ll see is based on ancient wisdom and are WHOLE food-based supplements. I want you to get the most of your money, AND get the best result. That’s why I go to great lengths to research and personally review everything that has a place in our store. I can’t wait for you to see it first-hand!

I trust this guide will serve you well, empower you to make healthy choices, fill your kitchen with wonderful nourishing foods and develop rich relationships within the community.

With gratitude,

Cassie
