U-E Wall Words
These flashcards are a great way to introduce new phonemes to your class, as well as being a colourful addition to your ‘Word Wall’, for your students to use as a reference throughout the week.
The U-E phoneme can be tricky, as it makes 2 sounds – a long U sound (cube), as well as the oo sound (chute). In the North Lanarkshire programme, UE is taught separately as ‘oo’, so when I’m teaching the U-E (magic e) sound, I refer back to the UE phoneme, and let kids know that sometimes the split phoneme also says ‘OO’. In this pack, I’ve separated the words by which sound they make.
Types of words included:• 9 simple 1 U-E words making the long U sound: use, fume, fuse,
cube, mule, huge, mute, cute, fumes• 6 simple U-E words that make the oo sound: chute, tube, tune,
June, dune, dude. • 2 trickier U-E words saying OO: attitude, parachute• 2 trickier U-E words making the long U sound: confuse, refuse.
It was harder to find more challenging words (that were appropriate for a younger age group) for this phoneme. I have included a couple of blank frames, though, in case you want to add some words of your own.
