Abstract Bert Hodge Hill, the director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athensfrom 1906 to 1926, was also involved in relief work in Greece, beginning with theAmerican Red Cross mission in 1918–1919 and continuing until 1927–1928, when heserved as a substitute member of the Refugee Settlement Commission. Throughout thisperiod Hill built and maintained an extensive social network that helped to promote theinterests of the School. His work yielded substantial benefits for the institution onseveral occasions, particularly when there was a need to expropriate land for theGennadius Library and to negotiate with the Greek government during the initial stagesof the Athenian Agora project.

interactions with Jews, Greeks, and Romans as he spread the gospel in theMediterranean world. In addition to exploring Paul's context and analyzing his letters, the book has chapters on the chronology of Paul's life, the text of the Pauline letters, the scholarly contributions to our understanding of Paul over the last 150 years, andthe theology of the Pauline corpus. There is no comparable introduction to Paul thatintegrates the Jewish, Greek, and Roman influences on him and the letters that makeup a substantial portion of the New Testament. --

Language enAbstract Given the overwhelming scholarly attention directed towards the Old and New

Perspectives within the Pauline Studies guild, much worthwhile Pauline scholarshipcontinues to float beneath or beyond our interpretive radar. Recent post-colonial,ecotheological and philosophical reappraisals of Paul are changing the way we dobusiness—with some interesting alternative conclusions. As a ‘state of play’ synopsis, this article seeks to summarize ways in which alternative discourses like (1) continentalphilosophy, (2) ecological hermeneutics, (3) post-colonial/gender reconstructions, and(4) social-scientific theory can shed a necessary, nuanced light on Paul and hiscontinued relevance beyond the duelling perspectives. However, I conclude bysuggesting that most alternative ‘reconstructions’ significantly rely on the notion ofearly Christian egalitarian purity, and thus only confirm a modern liberal inclination toestablish original, untainted, pure, Christian origins.

support for NT Wright’s largely neglected reading of 2 Corinthians 5:21 and alsocreates greater immediate contemporary relevance. Instead of seeing the passage aspurely polemical or apologetic, the passage is seen as functioning as an exhortationeven as it conforms to an apologetic for Paul’s ministry.

  • Abstract We live in a time when leadership and showmanship are seen as far greater virtues thanhumility and meekness. Even the church has often got it backward. And in Paul'ssecond letter to the Corinthians, he confronts similar problems in the first-centurychurch. D.A. Carson believes we can learn valuable lessons from Paul's letter aboutwhat it really means to be a mature Christian in the face of adversity. In A Model ofChristian Maturity he takes the reader step by step through an exposition of 2Corinthians 10-13 and then helps them apply these Scriptures to everyday life in thechurch. Perfect for pastors, students, and laypeople, this book highlights the power ofweakness in the life of the Christian.

angels in late antiquity. During the fourth and fifth centuries, Christians beganexperimenting with new modes of piety, adapting longstanding forms of publicauthority to Christian leadership and advancing novel ways of cultivating body andmind to further the progress of individual Christians. Muehlberger argues that inpracticing these new modes of piety, Christians developed new ways of thinking aboutangels. The book begins with a detailed examination of the two most populardiscourses about angels that developed in late antiquity. In the first, developed byChristians cultivating certain kinds of ascetic practices, angels were one type of beingamong many in a shifting universe, and their primary purpose was to guard and toguide Christians. In the other, articulated by urban Christian leaders in contest with oneanother, angels were morally stable characters described in the emerging canon ofScripture, available to enable readers to render Scripture coherent with emergingtheological positions. Muehlberger goes on to show how these two discourses did notremain isolated in separate spheres of cultivation and contestation, but influenced oneanother and the wider Christian culture. She offers in-depth analysis of popularbiographies written in late antiquity, of the community standards of emerging monasticcommunities, and of the training programs developed to prepare Christians toparticipate in ritual, demonstrating that new ideas about angels shaped and directed theformation of the definitive institutions of late antiquity. Angels in Late AncientChristianity is a meticulous and thorough study of early Christian ideas about angels, but it also offers a different perspective on late ancient Christian history, arguing thatangels were central rather than peripheral to the emergence of Christian institutionsand Christian culture in late antiquity.

How does the Bible speak imaginatively and concretely about who God is and whatGod's activity on behalf of the world looks like?In The Unrelenting God sixteenaccomplished scholars in the fields of biblical and theological studies explore ways inwhich Scripture speaks about God's character and God's activity in the world. Ashonoree Beverly Roberts Gaventa has done throughout her career, the contributorsaddress important and nuanced theological themes such as God's dramatic invasion ofthe world in the gospel of Jesus Christ, God's ultimate triumph over the powers of sinand death, and humanity's ongoing participation with God in Christ.Scholars, students, and church leaders will appreciate this volume's careful theological interpretation ofwhole scriptural books and individual passages -- and its ability to model instructivelyhow that interpretation is best done.Contributors:Shane BergMartinus C. deBoerAlexandra R. addressing and advocating for the most important issues of our time. In doing so, shehas influenced an entire generation, and empowered countless people in their efforts toput religion in the service of meeting human needs in difficult times. In this timely book,McFague recalls her readers to the practices of restraint. In a world bent onconsumption it is imperative that people of religious faith realize the significant rolethey play in advocating for the earth, and a more humane life for all.The root ofrestraint, she argues, rests in the ancient Christian notion of Kenosis, orself-emptying.By introducing Kenosis through the life stories of John Woolman,Simone Weil, and Dorothy Day, McFague brings a powerful theological concept tobear in a winsome and readable way.

Abstract In his Letter to the Smyrnaeans, Ignatius of Antioch condemns his opponents to a“bodiless” and “daimonic” afterlife, and also quotes an apocryphal resurrectiontradition wherein the risen Jesus eschews the label “bodiless daimon.” Ignatius, therefore, defines both Jesus’ and his opponents’ physiology in terms of the‘daimonic’; but what would such an existence have entailed in antiquity? In whatfollows, I explore the rhetorical functions of Ignatius’ daimonic terminology bysituating it within larger discourses surrounding daimonic physiologies. I contend thatIgnatius’ daimonological terminology not only caricatures the docetic belief in abodiless risen Jesus, but also condemns Ignatius’ opponents to a morose afterlife thatruns directly counter to their anticipations. When contextualized within his letters moregenerally, Ignatius’ derisive rhetoric solidifies his construction of ‘docetic’ Christians:they are evil, sub-human, and daimonic, the epitome of the ‘other,’ doomed to inhabitthe cosmic and societal margins, and unworthy of interaction with Ignatius’ fellow‘orthodox’ Christians.

development of the world's history, but also one of the most enigmatic and littleunderstood, shrouded in mystery and misunderstanding.Through a forensic, brilliantreexamination of all the key surviving texts of early Christianity, Geza Vermesilluminates the origins of a faith and traces the evolution of the figure of Jesus from theman he was—a prophet recognizable as the successor to other Jewish holy men of theOld Testament—to what he came to represent: a mysterious, otherworldly being at theheart of a major new religion. As Jesus's teachings spread across the easternMediterranean, hammered into place by Paul, John, and their successors, they weretransformed in the space of three centuries into a centralized, state-backed creedworlds away from its humble origins. Christian Beginnings tells the captivating story ofhow a man came to be hailed as the Son consubstantial with God, and of how arevolutionary, anticonformist Jewish subsect became the official state religion of theRoman Empire./div

Ghanaian woman partly compelled the Church of Pentecost in Ghana to issue acommuniqué in 2010 to annul a longstanding tradition of head covering by herwomen. The communiqué generated varied, but largely unfavourable reactions fromthe Church’s members. This paper examines the culture of headgear in Ghana, thecommuniqué annulling the practice in the Church, the reactions of Church members,as well as 1 Corinthians 11:2-16; which appears to be a double-edged sword for boththe imposition and the annulment. The paper opines that the reactions of the membersof the Church indicated a lack of appreciation of the rationale of the communiquéand the actual decisions it contains. Hence, the paper proposes a careful blend ofculture and Christianity in Ghana and the adoption of a more inclusive approachtowards effective grassroots participation in Church governance.

“Thebreadth of historical development, the depth of theological and ethical analysis, and theclarity of thought and expression by Kenneth Himes make Christianity and the PoliticalOrder an excellent textbook.” – Charles Curran

Beyond electoralcampaigns and government structures, the relationship between the political realm andChristianity has always involved the important questions of how we ought to livetogether, and how we should organize and govern our common life. As the authornotes, politics—and the political choices we make—must be "guided byconsiderations of national and global justice and peace and, for Christians, by theteachings of Jesus," as interpreted by tradition.
Himes examines therelationship between Christianity and politics from the teachings of the Old and NewTestaments through the patristic and medieval eras, and from the age of reform to theage of revolution, and throughout the twentieth century into the third millennium. Hetakes on questions of the role of the church in politics, responsible voting, concerns ofglobalization, and issues of human rights and war and peace.
With discussionquestions and suggestions for further reading, Christianity and the Political Order is atimely and compelling review of the relationship between Christian faith and thepolitical realm both past and present in a classroom-friendly text.

first of two that will offer a first English translation of the anonymous fourth-centurycommentary on the thirteen letters of Paul. Widely viewed as one of the finestpre-Reformation commentaries on the Pauline Epistles, this commentary, until the timeof Erasmus, was attributed to Ambrose. The name Ambrosiaster ("Star of Ambrose")seems to have been given to the anonymous author of the work by its Benedictineeditors (1686- 1690).

How does the Bible speak imaginatively and concretely about who God is and whatGod's activity on behalf of the world looks like?In The Unrelenting God sixteenaccomplished scholars in the fields of biblical and theological studies explore ways inwhich Scripture speaks about God's character and God's activity in the world. from a few towering figures, the individual religious agent has fallen out of view.Addressing this gap, the essays in this volume focus on the individual and individualityin ancient Mediterranean religion. Even in antiquity, individual religious action was notdetermined by traditional norms handed down through families and the larger socialcontext, but rather options were open and choices were made. On the part of theindividual, this development is reflected in changes in 'individuation', the parallelprocess of a gradual full integration into society and the development of self-reflectionand of a notion of individual identity. These processes are analysed within theHellenistic and Imperial periods, down to Christian-dominated late antiquity, in bothpagan polytheistic as well as Jewish monotheistic settings. The volume focuses onindividuation in everyday religious practices in Phoenicia, various Greek cities, andRome, and as identified in institutional developments and philosophical reflections onthe self as exemplified by the Stoic Seneca.

The book, a study of the history andtheology of the Eucharist, is the fifth volume in the SCM Studies in Worship andLiturgy series and will help to establish the series as a place for landmark books ofliturgical scholarship. This book will be aimed at undergraduate and graduate theologystudents, clergy and theologically literate laity. It will assume some technicalknowledge (i. e. it is not an introduction to liturgy or introduction to sacraments), butwill attempt to outline what the evidence is, and what current scholars think. Onoccasions it will advance or argue for why one interpretation is preferable to another.

milestone in New Testament research and has become a standard resource for thestudy of John. Historically biblical scholars have concentrated on the SynopticGospels: Matthew, Mark and Luke. However, Dodd's book encouraged scholars to takeJohn seriously as a source for the life of Jesus. This volume both reflects upon andlooks beyond Dodd's writings to address the implications, limitations and potential ofhis groundbreaking research and its programmatic approach to charting a course forfuture research on the Gospel of John. Leading biblical scholars demonstrate the recentsurge of interest in John's distinctive witness to Jesus, and also in Dodd's work as theharbinger of advancements in the study of the Fourth Gospel. This volume will beinvaluable to all those studying the New Testament, Johannine theology and the historyof the early Church.

Abstract Sometime in the latter half of the second century, Bishop Dionysios of Corinth beganwriting letters to Christian communities around the eastern Mediterranean. Of theseletters, which remain only as fragments and summaries in Eusebius's EcclesiasticalHistory, we know of eight, including one addressed to a woman named Chrysophora.Though Dionysios is not often mentioned in histories of second-century Christianity, hewas famous enough in his own day that his advice was requested from as far as theBlack Sea and his letters were tampered with by those seeking to lend his authority totheir theological positions. When Dionysios has been discussed by historians of earlyChristianity, his work has been mined for what it can tell us about early Christian lettercollections, for the names of other second century bishops, and for fights over variousearly Christian heresies. Though I draw on these studies, I am here concerned withexamining Dionysios's surviving letters as political rhetoric within what LovedayAlexander has called the “social networks” of early Christianity. Rather than focusingon questions of episcopal succession or early Christian letter collections, I considerhow Dionysios's letters functioned as political instruments that knit together earlyChristian communities as they made their way to and from Corinth aboard merchantships and overland caravans, moving amongst the myriad of people and goods thatflowed through Roman trade routes in the eastern Mediterranean.

history. As the curtain comes down on the Church defined by the 16th-centuryCounter-Reformation, the curtain is rising on the Evangelical Catholicism of the thirdmillennium: a way of being Catholic that comes from over a century of Catholicreform; a mission-centered renewal honed by the Second Vatican Council and givencompelling expression by Blessed John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. The Gospel-centered Evangelical Catholicism of the future will send all the people of the Churchinto mission territory every day—a territory increasingly defined in the West byspiritual boredom and aggressive secularism. Confronting both these culturalchallenges and the shadows cast by recent Catholic history, Evangelical Catholicismunapologetically proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the truth of the world. It alsomolds disciples who witness to faith, hope, and love by the quality of their lives and thenobility of their aspirations. Thus the Catholicism of the 21st–century and beyond willbe a culture-forming counterculture, offering all men and women of good will a deeplyhumane alternative to the soul-stifling self-absorption of postmodernity. Drawing onthirty years of experience throughout the Catholic world, from its humblest parishes toits highest levels of authority, George Weigel proposes a deepening of faith-based andmission-driven Catholic reform that touches every facet of Catholic life—from theepiscopate and the papacy to the priesthood and the consecrated life; from the renewalof the lay vocation in the world to the redefinition of the Church’s engagement withpublic life; from the liturgy to the Church’s intellectual life. Lay Catholics and clergyalike should welcome the challenge of this unique moment in the Church’s history,Weigel urges. Mediocrity is not an option, and all Catholics, no matter what theirstation in life, are called to live the evangelical vocation into which they were baptized:without compromise, but with the joy, courage, and confidence that comes from livingthis side of the Resurrection.

will reflect on the Church's basic characteristics, the "marks of the Church": what itmeans for the Church to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Non-Catholics andnonbelievers looking to appreciate how Catholics regard the Church also will desire tounderstand these "marks". In this book, renowned Dominican theologian Father AidanNichols explores the Church's characteristics. Drawing on insights from fourtheological masters-Henri de Lubac, Jean Tillard, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and CharlesJournet-Father Nichols seeks to help Catholics and non-Catholics to "figure out" theChurch, on at least a fundamental level. Of course the four masters in question do notclaim to exhaust the mystery of the Church. Nor does Nichols. They do, however, assist the reader in going deeper into the mystery. To accomplish this goal, FatherNichols appeals to both the Scholastic tradition and authors influenced by theressourcement movement in theology. In this way, he provides readers with a sense ofCatholicism's breadth, which is at once orthodox and yet generously conceived.

  • University Wycliffe CollegeAbstract Between research on conversion / recruitment of the individual and the study of the

expansion of the early church lies an area of research which has not been widelyexamined: group founding, where founding is seen as the actual coalescence of a groupand not, for example, the development of group identity in an already establishedgroup. The following work probes the founding of Pauline groups by first developing asmall group founding model using recent social psychology research and then analyzingthe records of the founding of small groups in the Greco-Roman world. Then the groupfounding model is broadly applied to the founding of Pauline small groups as seen inthe Pauline letters and utilized in three case studies to groups founded in Thessalonica,Corinth and Galatia. The small group founding model utilizes a multi-perspectivalapproach which emphasizes context, connections and coalescence, with the forces ofcoalescence including behavioural, affective and cognitive elements. By maintaining amulti-dimensional view the model moves beyond previous approaches to Pauline groupfounding which have predominantly emphasized cognitive elements (e.g., attraction toPaul’s message) and current approaches to recruitment and dispersion which havepredominantly emphasized socialization or network theory. A comparative component, using associations and rhetorical and philosophical schools as analogues, examinesgroup founding in the Greco-Roman world. This component is used not only to adjustthe group founding model but also to provide data for comparison with the founding ofPauline groups. Next the founding of Pauline groups is examined beginning with Paul'sperspective on group founding. An general overview of the founding of Pauline smallgroups is then provided, noting such factors as: 1) the establishment of contacts; 2) thesocial context of Paul's activity; 3) the connections growing from ethnic/religious andoccupational contacts; 4) the variety in coalescence, though focusing on cognitivecoalescence and frame alignment. Finally, specific Pauline groups are considered ascase studies with special attention given to the similarities and differences between thegroups.

This article in the first instance explores the extent to which dominationand submission generated or contributed to specific loyalties as well as borders in NTtexts. Secondly, the impact and lasting influence of fixed patterns of domination andsubmission on rhetorical, ideological and theological levels are considered – inconnection with the extent to which NT documents interacted with and counteractedagainst such loyalties and possible border-crossings are eva-luated. Finally, strategiesare suggested for using texts born from domination and submission, as normativescriptures in discussions of human dignity.

Abstract A geophysical survey was designed in order to detect ground liquefaction phenomena ina wrecked Early Christian Basilica in the archaeological site of the ancient harbour ofLechaion, located in the southeastern coast of the Corinth Gulf, Greece. EM, GPR andERT measurements led to the detection of stratigraphy and resistive zones of coarsematerial which were possibly used in ancient times for geotechnical purposes and couldbe related with the liquefaction phenomenon characteristics. ERT sections have detectedthe liquefaction zones successfully suggesting that the method can be a useful tool forsuch applications. EM and GPR methods add valuable information regarding lateral andvertical changes in sedimentation.

honour and how this is able to generate ideas of social identity within a community andto elucidate patterns of social behaviour. Finney examines the letter of 1 Corinthians, which presents a unique exposé of numerous aspects of social life in the first-centuryGreco-Roman world where honour was of central importance. At the same time, filotimia (the love and lust for honour) also had the capacity to generate anenvironment of competition, antagonism, factionalism, and conflict, all of which areclearly evident within the pages of 1 Corinthians. Finney seeks to examine the extentto which the social constraints of filotimia, and its potential for conflict, lay behind themany problems evident within the nascent Christ-movement at Corinth. Finneypresents a fresh reading of the letter, and the thesis it proposes is that the honour-conflict model, hitherto overlooked in studies on 1 Corinthians, provides anappropriate and compelling framework within which to view the many disparateaspects of the letter in their social context.

Abstract ABSTRACT Several times within 1 Corinthians Paul encourages the Corinthians toimitate him. These are found at critical junctures in the epistle in 1 Corinthians 4:16and 11:1. The meaning of these sections is in question from the perspective ofCorinthian scholars. Several believe that Paul is appealing to apostolic power andauthority to coerce the Corinthians to obey him, whereas others find him responding tosocial situations. This is different from the way that imitation and discipleship arepresented within the writings of Ignatius of Antioch. Pauline ideas, specifically thosefrom 1 Corinthians, are known to have influenced Ignatius of Antioch’s writing, andthus Ignatius’ ideas about imitation are likely to reflect the meaning that Paul intended.Ignatius specifically speaks about imitation and discipleship in several places: Ign. Eph.1, 2, 4; 3:1-3, Ign. Magn. 4:1; 5:1-2; 9:1-6, Ign. Rom. 3:1-2; 6, 3, 1. When thesepassages are considered, imitation involves suffering and possibly martyrdom.Imitation is also connected to the cross of Christ and is not a means to enforcesuperiority. Ignatius’ view of imitation would contradict the opinions of some scholarswho see Paul’s injunction for imitation as a claim for power. It also supplies moreinformation to the idea than those who claim that it is simply a counter example to thesocial situation.

Language enAbstract Although the ‘trajectories’ model of early Christian developments introduced by James

Robinson and Helmut Koester has been influential in some circles, and particularlyemphasizes diversity in early Christianity, the image of a trajectory may oversimplifymatters and may in some cases impose an artificial connection of texts andphenomena. The undeniable diversity of early Christianity also involved a rich andvaried interaction and a complexity that is not adequately captured in a ‘trajectory’approach. A model of ‘interactive diversity’ more adequately reflects the complexnature of early Christianity.

Abstract This dissertation investigates the exegetical form, rhetorical function, and theologicalimagery of Paul's midrash on Exodus 34 in 2 Cor 3:7-18. Paul's pattern of biblicalexegesis in this passage, which is unique among his letters, has given rise to numerousexplanations. The contribution of this study is to read Paul's midrash throughcomparison with the forms and traditions of Hellenistic Jewish commentaries, particularly Philo of Alexandria's Allegorical Commentary. Through a close textualevaluation, I suggest that Paul's midrash bears the closest formal similarity to acommentary pattern found in Philo's interpretation of secondary biblical lemmata inthe Allegorical Commentary. Although Paul may have adopted this pattern fromhomiletic convention, it seems more likely that he has borrowed it directly from Jewishcommentaries, which he could have known through his advanced Jewish education. Astudy of the reuse of Jewish and Platonic commentary traditions in variouscontemporary treatises and letters confirms this hypothesis. Such traditions were oftenincorporated as exegetical excursuses. Reading Paul's midrash on Exodus 34 in light ofother exegetical excursuses has several ramifications for the study of 2 Corinthians.First, it offers new evidence for the rhetorical unity of 2 Cor 2:14-4:6. Second, recognizing the presence of covenant renewal themes in both Paul's epistolary frameand in his midrashic excursus suggests that his opponents in 2 Corinthians wereHellenistic Jewish Christian missionaries. Third, paying attention to Paul's complexportrait of Moses, facilitated by his sequential commentary in the Exodus midrash, provides a window into his confrontation with these missionaries. Although heapproves of their use of Moses as a model of Christian transformation, Paul wants todistinguish further between Christian and Hellenistic Jewish versions of this tradition.

  • Shying away from the more traditional biblical locus used to promote Mosaicexemplarity in Hellenistic Judaism (Exodus 33), Paul focuses on Moses' role as arenewed covenant minister in Exodus 34. Drawing together central theological themeslike covenant renewal, priestly tabernacle vision, and particularly parrhēsia, Paul aimsto present Moses as both a foil and an exemplar of the Christian apostle, a figurewhose glory should be viewed in light of the glory of Jesus Christ.

University Duke UniversityAbstract Respect for autonomy is the foundation of modern bioethics, even (or especially) where

bioethics is attentive to the problem of suffering caused by the practice of medicineitself. It provides guidance in the midst of therapeutic and moral uncertainty, justificationfor morally problematic enterprises, and the promise of protection against self-serving orpredatory medical personnel. Yet bioethical arguments that appeal to the injustice or thehorror of suffering depend on an instinctual and uncomplicated association of suffering, especially imposed suffering, with evil. This uncomplicated association, this flattening ofthe complexities of the moral landscape, must lead to a diminished capacity to navigatethe very difficulties that define the field of bioethics. This dissertation explores therelationship, particularly, of autonomy, suffering, and happiness in modern bioethics, asrepresented by three key theorists (James Childress, Tom Beauchamp, and H. TristramEngelhardt). It then contrasts these findings with resources from the Christian tradition:Luke-Acts, the letters of Paul, and the theologians Thomas Aquinas, Catherine of Genoa, and Margaret Ebner. Their accounts of the meaning and experience of suffering withinwell-lived lives makes for a more robust account of the moral life, one in which sufferingplays a formative part.

Their genesis over the course of her career, and more importantly their bearingon our current intellectual and political situation, illustrate what it means to be ahumane and humanistic scholar in the last half century."--Anthony Cutler, author of"The Hand of the Master""All of Herrin's essays reveal a distinguished historian with aclear intellectual consciousness."--Antonio Carile, University of Bologna"Thiswide-ranging collection of studies by one of the foremost medieval historians of thisgeneration opens up new perspectives on Byzantium. Women at the court and in privatehouseholds are restored to agency and the capital of Constantinople is seen from theperspective of the provinces. taken in the local sense, and the fire of vv. 13 and 15 plays no soteriological function. This article contests this reading, arguing that Paul's probable allusion to Mal 3 and hisreference to the testing function of fire may imply refining as well. More importantly, itdemonstrates that whereas the phrase διὰ πυρός is indeterminate and may take eitherthe local or the instrumental sense, nearly every other instance of the constructionσῴζω + διά + genitive in the relevant Greek literature has an instrumental sense.

Abstract The question this article addresses is how the encratic, virtuous body in 2 Clement‘speaks itself’ as a missional performance. It is in essence concerned with the discoursesof corporeal virtuosity in 2 Clement. Firstly, the agon motif (2 Clem 7:1−6; 20:1−4) isdiscussed since it forms the basis metaphor for the understanding of ancient virtue-formation. Secondly, 2 Clement’s encratic technologies of soul and flesh as an extensionand overamplification, respectively, of the body are examined (2 Clem 9:1−11). In thethird instance, the proliferation of visible technologies of the body in 2 Clement arebrought into perspective with special emphasis on these technologies as strategies ofandromorphism, a crucial element in the understanding of virtue in antiquity (2 Clem12:1−6). Fourthly, 2 Clement also links concepts of holiness and the pneumaticdimension of spirituality in its argumentation (2 Clem 14:1−5). This needs to beunderstood in the light of corporeal virtuosity. Finally, the concepts of suffering (2 Clem19:3−4), martyrdom (2 Clem 5:1−7) and the apocalyptic anti-spectacle (2 Clem 17:1−7)are central in 2 Clement’s formulations of the missional performance and are therefore
