OCLC
WorldCat Local
Uses a local version of WorldCat.org that displays your library’s collections first,
Interoperates with existing ILS and interlibrary loan systems,
Provides a single-search interface for all resources, and
Offers social-networking tools such as list sharing and reviews.
Why use OCLC?
Leverages the Illinois library holdings in WorldCat with other added functionality
Timing -- OCLC was developing WorldCat Local and it is better to be part of the test and beta in order to influence the product
OCLC can provide a single solution (vendor) for both Discovery and Delivery (PAC to Circulation to ILL)
OCLC traditionally has developed tools that individual libraries can configure without the intervention of a 3rd party
OCLC has relationships with other search engines -- Google, Yahoo etc.
ISL purchases statewide electronic resources from OCLC and those resources can easily be a incorporated as part of the single interface Discovery interface (PAC)

A “Google-like” search box can be placed inmultiple locations on your website or other sites where your users are likely to find it.
Relevance, the default sort, will display resulting records available at your library, then the consortium, and finally the full WorldCat database.
Faceted searching allows the userto refine a search by author, content, format, or date.
For physical items in the library, call number and shelf status are displayed. To see availability at other libraries in the consortium, click on the + sign.
For a citation to this book, click on the“Cite this Item” link.
A variety of citations are displayed.
The detailed record for Roasted Peanuts can be viewed toward the bottom of the record display under the tab, “Details.” Click on “subjects” to see additional subject headings.
'You can also view reviews, if any have been published, and other WorldCat Libraries that own the book.
The “Libraries” tab displays those libraries that own this title beginning with the closest library and then listing libraries that are farther away.
If you only want articles, click onthat option under the category, Format.
Let’s select the first article…
and then click on “Check forElectronic Resources”
The full text of the article we want is available in Wilson Select Plus, one of the FirstSearchdatabases available at Mattoon Public Library.
For access to full text, click on the “Find article” link.
In FirstSearch click the View Full Text link within the detailed record.
By registering and signing in to WorldCat, users can access “social networking” services to create and share lists and reviews.
Going back to the item information for Roasted Peanuts, we can select “review this item.”
Since we have successfully signed in, we can create and submit a review.
In this search for Halloween, we will limit to sound recordings…
and then select item # 4.
This sound recording is not available atMattoon Public Library, but the user can select “place hold”…
and logon to LINC to complete the transaction.
Since we are still logged on to our WorldCat account, we can choose to save this item to a list. In this case, we will choose the list entitled, “October story hour” which we created at an earlier time.
The list service provides space for notes and can be made public for sharing or kept private.
To share your thoughts on WorldCat Local, click on the Survey link at the top of the screen.
