“Remember Marco, no one is wat-ching and you have nothing to pro-ve. Stay above 150 feet...”

These were the last words spoken to 22-ye-ar-old Marco Pheil by the chief flight in-structor at Morningstar, Len Klopper.

When Pheil never returned from his solorun last week Tuesday, Klopper alertedemergency services and it was soon disco-vered that Pheil had tragically crashed hisgyrocopter on a farm near Bloubergstrand.

“Long before Marco died his employer alsospokeveryhighly of him.He saidhe is a verycompetent and conscientious young man,”said Klopper. All Pheil’s experience could not prevent

him from crashing a few kilometres West ofMorningstar airfield towards BloubergHills.Right after the craft fell from the sky a fire

broke out on Currie’s farm, destroyingabout 40 hectares of vegetation.“When paramedics arrived on the farm

they found the light aircraft completely abla-ze and the surrounding veld burning rapid-ly. The pilot of the aircraft was already dead.Provincial services were on scene to extin-guish the fire,” says ER24 spokesperson,Russel Meiring. The local aviation industry is still in shock

days after the tragic accident occurred.Says Klopper: “A gyrocopter accident is

very unusual. I have been a pilot for 30 yearsand trained over 70 pilots and have never co-me across something like this.“If there is a technical issue with the craft

at a higher altitude then it can be safely lan-ded, but techniques such as crop sprayingand game capture require one to fly at loweraltitude and then it becomes dangerous, be-cause you’re on the ground before you knowit.”Klopper insists that everything that could

be done to ensure a safe flight for Pheil wasdone beforehand.“There is no compromise on safety,” he

says. His attitude towards safety is backed up

by theSafetyAward of theAeroclub of SouthAfrica, which he won last year.If all went according to plan Pheil would

have completed his training in about fourmore hours of flying solo.

KhoiSan skeleton uncoveredANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

More than 500 years ago the Khoi-Sanculture dominated the shores of theWestern Cape.

Never quite proliferating, they lived anddied without ever leaving significant struc-tures behind for future archeologists to dis-cover.Besides rock paintings and humble pos-

sessions such as pottery, the certainty oftheir existence canbe tracked throughhisto-ry by their skeletons – a treasure in itself. When construction started on a house in

Melkbosstrand, the last thing buildersthought they would uncover was a humanskeleton. They soon came across another and pho-

ned the police, who seized the find until theycould rule out any foul play. The Heritage Foundation was contacted

once this was ruled out, and two weeks afterthe initial find University of Cape Town ar-cheologist LouisaHuttenwas at the buildingsite looking for clues.“The police first thought they had three

skeletons, but it turned out to be two – a wo-men and a young child (most likely four orfive years old),” says Hutten. While Hutten’s team were on the site they

uncovered a third skeleton, which was justas perfectly preserved as the other two.Quite remarkle considering that it could

be as old as 3 000 years. As opposed to the other two skeletons, this

time the team could see in what position itwas lying.Like the skeleton found in 1999next toOtto

du Plessis Drive, the male skeleton Hutten’steamuncoveredwas also lying in a foetal po-sition with one hand resting underneath thechin.“Sometimes a hand is under the chin, but

most of the times the hands are together,”explains Hutten.

There has been a lot of media attention de-dicated to this latest find in Melkbosstrand, which surprises Hutten, because it is quitecommon to uncover evidence of Khoi-Sanexistence – in particular finding skeletonsburied in the sand.“The alkaline and salt in the sand and sho-

al are quite good for preservation, so manyskeletons are uncovered along the West Co-ast.”When an archeologist comes across a ske-

leton, they carefully search the surroundingarea, at the correct depth, for pieces of coalor shards of pottery. Finding any one of the-se would be a great indicator as to how oldthe skeleton is.In the latest discovery, pottery was found

in the vicinity, which suggests that the ske-letons were buried there between 500 and3 000 years ago.“The pottery suggests that there has been

contact with other groups further north.

They havemost likely been exposed tomate-rial culture. The late Stone Age goes back to40 000 years ago, but pottery in their culturegoes back to about 3 000 years ago,” she ex-plains.The skeletons were claimed from the poli-

ce and unearthed from the sand, and now re-side at the University of Cape Town.Soon the carbon dating process will begin

and a more accurate age can be calculated.“Skeletons we have dated quite recently

have ranged between 500 and 3 000 years old,so my estimate at this stage is indeed bet-ween that period. We will date a fraction ofthe rib. The age would eventually be accura-te within 30 to 40 years either way.”Buildingwas temporarily haltedwhen the

Heritage Foundation became involved, andaccording to Hutten it will start againpromptly. She says an archeologist will hopefully be

on site during the next few weeks.

The skeleton of a man, estimated to be between 500 and 3 000 years old, was discovered at abuilding site in Melkbosstrand earlier in April.

Horrific collision claims lifeANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

Two horrific motorcycle accidents inTable View this Easter weekend leftone person dead and another critically

injured. In the fatal accident a man sustained

“multiple amputations” when a BMW colli-ded with his scooter onn Marine Drive onSaturday.

And on Friday morning a 35-year-old ri-der allegedly crashed his motorcycle on Ot-to du Plessis Road.

A TygerBurger reader who prefers to re-main anonymous, witnessed the immediateaftermath of the fatal accident.

“In a split second many lives were chan-ged, bright futures shattered just becauseone person did not have respect for the rulesof the road,” she mused before recountingthe events that led up to the traumatic expe-rience.

“On Saturday I went for a morning runat 05:15 on the cycle path at Sunset Beach.I heard a car approaching at a very highspeed and then a light metallic luxury sedanflashed recklessly past me in the directionof Table View. I still thought to myself thatthe driver is driving as if he intended to getsomeone killed. Five minutes later I noticedthat the road barrier was bent and that the-re were debris laying on the cycle path. Tomy horror I realized the cylindrical objectlaying across the cycle path was a fulllength unclothed human leg with a sportshoe still attached to the foot.”

According to ER24’s spokesperson Wer-ner Vermaak, the biker sustained “multipleamputations” and was declared dead on the

scene.Says Vermaak: “The driver of the BMW

was assessed by paramedics and found wit-hout any serious injuries. The local policethat attended the scene later removed him.The exact cause of the incident is not yetknown and will be investigated.”

The anonymous reader says she was for-tunate to have a torch and reflective clo-thing with her and flagged down oncomingvehicles before emergency services arri-ved.

For the rest of my life I will remember thismorning run on Easter Saturday for all thewrong reasons and I will not tolerate anyperson speeding again,” she concludes.

Meanwhile, the motorcyclist who cras-

hed his bike the day before was slightly mo-re fortunate than the scooter rider.

He is nonetheless in a critical conditionat the time of going to press.

Says ER24’s Vermaak: “Members of thelocal National Sea Rescue Institute cameacross the incident and immediately star-ted stabilising the rider before emergencyservices arrived. Paramedics from ER24and Life Healthcare arrived on the sceneand initiated advanced life support treat-ment. The rider sustained multiple injuriesand was rushed off to a nearby hospital forfurther stabilisation.”

The exact cause of the incident is not cle-ar but those who attended the scene said therider appeared to have hit the road barrier.

The Blue Gum trees along BlaauwbergRoad will be getting a makeover from5 May.

Even though these alien beauties greedi-ly guzzle water and pose a risk to MyCiTibusses, passing vehicles and pedestrians, the city is investing the time and money toprune them.“The entire pruning operation should ta-

ke about six weeks to complete, weatherpermitting. A private contractor has beenappointed to carry out thework,” sayswardcouncillor Heather Brenner. She adds that the contractor has a “speci-

al talent” for pruning Blue Gums. She continues: “A large number of the

trees have reached the stage where they po-se a potential risk to the safety of proper-ties, businesses and other road users in thesurrounding community. It is also particu-larly important to prevent damage to thenewly constructed infrastructure of theMyCiti public transport service.”These particular trees have a rich histo-

ry, and Brenner says they have been therefor as long as she can remember. Many would reason, however, that it

would have been wonderful had there beenan indigenous forest along the road insteadof Blue Gums.WhenBrennerwas asked about the city’s

management of invasive species, particu-larly that of Blue Gums, she replied: “It’sa bit of a catch-22 situation because of theheritage value.”Brenner would not be drawn into further

discussing the city’s stance. In 2011 the Environmental Resource Ma-

nagement’s biodiversity fact sheet indica-ted that Cape Town is home to largest num-ber of threatened or extinct plant species inthe world. It states: “Some 13 plant species that used

to occur in Cape Town are now globally ex-tinct in the wild. A further 306 of CapeTown’s plant species, and 27 of its animalspecies are in immediate danger of extincti-

on.”The largest threat is urbanisation, and

according to the fact sheet the second lar-gest threat is invasive alien plants (such aswattles, pines, hakeas and gums). The debate around the value of BlueGum

trees is set to continue, but in themeantimeall users of Blaauwberg Road are asked tobe aware of the pruning project beginning5 May and exercise caution when in the vi-cinity of the work in progress.Brenner concluded by saying the process

will be minimally invasive to road usersand businesses along the busy road.

Shots were fired at police officers during ahigh-speed pursuit throughMelkbosstrandlast week Thursday afternoon. Two suspectswere arrested, but three are

still at large.According to a Melkbosstrand

Neighbourhood Watch incident report, thepursuit came after a house in DromedarisStreet was burgled.“The police responded while five males

fled the scene in a silverOpel headingnorthon the R27 after exiting Melkbosstrand atBirkenhead. When the suspects saw the po-lice ahead they drove back into Duynefon-tein at Napoleon Street and were chased bythe police throughMelkbos to 1st Avenue.”According to the report, shots were fired

during the pursuit. The vehicle was then apparently abando-

ned in Tidehigh Close and two suspects we-re arrested when they tried to run away. The others, however, hijacked anAudi in

1st Avenue, during which more shots werefired. They fled in the Audi along the R27 to-

wards Table View. The vehiclewas found abandoned in Sun-

ningdale. No injuries were reported. The report concludes: “Well done and

thank you to all involved in assisting tomake the arrests.”Residents are urged to be aware of suspi-

cious vehicles and persons in their areas.V Report any suspicious activity to the police at021 553 8200, Sector 1 police van (South of Salt Ri-ver) at 079 894 1640 and Sector 2 police van (Northof Salt River) at 082 522 1932.

Some starve, some die from exposure, dehydration, or suffocation, andotherstry to chew through their own limbs.

Mankind’s cruelty towards animals is un-deniable.After a Phoenix resident witnessed the

slow and painful death of a rodent, she isnow attempting to get rodent bait banned. The resident, who prefers to remain ano-

nymous, elaborates: “Having witnessedfirsthand the suffering of these creatures, itwill haunt me forever. I want to redeemmy-self for my bad decision to use these baits(sheets of glue).”The resident doesn’t know why there are

so many rats and mice in Phoenix recently, but she guesses that it could be due to thecanal that was closed, overcrowding inneighbouring Joe Slovo Park or the overflo-wing sewerage pipes. She just knew the time had come to start

ridding the suburb of rodents. She turned to baits andnowshe is haunted

by thepicture of the rat “squirminig andcry-ing for hours until it died a painful death”.Her neighbour saw a rodent chewing off

its own limb.SPCA’s spokesperson Lise-Marie Greeff-

Villet says the baiting of rodents is a difficult

topic.“The mandate of the SPCA is to prevent

cruelty to all animals, and none of us wantto see evena rat experience thepainful deathof poisoning.”The Animals Protection Act (APA) states

that a person will be committing an offenceif the person “lays or exposes any poison orany poisoned fluid or edible matter or infec-tious agents except for the destruction ofvermin or marauding domestic animals orwithout taking reasonable precautions toprevent injury or disease being caused toanimals”.Greeff-Villet continues: “According to the

APA one is allowed to use poison to destroyvermin if you do it responsibly and take allreasonable precautions to prevent the poi-son from affecting any other animal (or hu-man).However, the reality is that for the lay-man to use poison in a controlled and zerorisk environment, is almost impossible.“Death by poisoning is arguably the most

cruel and inhumane way to kill an animal, and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA stronglyadvises that more humane methods of trap-ping (passive trapping) and destruction beused.“We are also vehemently opposed to glue

traps and any mechanical traps – both in-struments that cause immeasurable andprolonged suffering before death.”

Rat’s painful death haunts woman

Glue traps, also known as glue baits, cause terrible suffering to small animals.

We have a small business. Wework day and night to keepour business going. Mostmonths we earn enough for abasic living, but sometimes wedo not have food on our table.

I just read in a local newspa-per about a company – a smallbusiness like ours – that wassued by a client for not doingthe work the way the clientwanted it done. The client sayswithin 24 hours the owner ofthe business was there to dothe job. But after it was done,he struggled to get the busi-ness owner back to fix minorthings.

As customers we are told tocomplain about everything. But, we are forced to startsmall businesses because weare unable to find work in ourcountry.

We have to jump at everywork opportunity that comesour way. We do not alwayshave money to go back tocompleted jobs, as we have tojump to the next job to sur-vive.

The business owner I men-tioned had to pay a large sumback to the client. He did notpay until the client threatenedwith further legal action.

I bet he did not have thecash to pay straight away. Wealso live from one job to theother, with no cash in between.

Please consider small busi-ness owners’ positions. Do notfight and threaten legal actionon every little aspect. We wantto make you happy, butsometimes things go wrong.

Help us grow and do not tryyour utmost to break us down.

Our economy is bad and, assmall business owners, we arethe first to feel the impact.

If your dog poops, use a scoopWe have recently moved to theBig Bay area from Johannes-burg. One of my greatestnew-found pleasures is takingmy dog and joining the otherdog walkers for a brisk walkalong Melkbosstrand Beachearly each morning.

What a beautiful area this isand how lucky we all are tolive so close to the beach. Imarvel daily at the spectacularsight of mountain and sea.

Unfortunately, I can’t gaze upfor too long – I must continual-ly look out to check I don’t stepin any dog poop!

It makes me sad to think thatpeople seem to think nothing ofallowing their dogs to relievethemselves on the grass or onthe beach itself, and not havethe decency to pick it up. Whatan outcry there will be the daythe city enforces the “no dogsallowed” rule simply becausedog owners don’t pick up aftertheir dog.

People walk here and kidsplay here – do you want to stepin poop? There are many binsalong the Melkbos beach front;there really is no excuse.

It’s as simple as this: grab abag before you leave home; ifyour dog poops use the bag as aglove and grab the poop; turnthe bag inside-out; knot it anddrop it in the bin.

Come on folks: if your dogpoops, please scoop!

We recently visited the circusand were met by a handful ofprotesters at the robots.

We enjoyed the show and itwas well attended. We even hadthe opportunity to feed theanimals, which was somethingmy daughter will never forget.

We are in full support of thecircus and will always welcomethem back to Parow.

Maybe the people at therobots should have taken 10minutes to see for themselves.

This circus is nothing butamazing and made me think ofmy childhood, when we alsovisited the circus. Those yearsit was a huge event at the oldGoodwood Showgrounds.Everyone dressed up, whiletheir hotdogs and popcorn weretops!

MAC’s objective for 2014 is to create anawareness thatwalkingand running is apri-vilege to be enjoyed at any age. They willhold informative talks at local schools, en-couraging pupils that they don’t have to bethe fastest, you are already a winner just bybeing out there. Regular walks and runs areplanned throughout the year, with distances

ranging from four to 21km, be it on the road, beach or Koeberg Reserve and, for the moreadventurous, Table Mountain. The MacFellows Drive aims to make the

community aware that both runners andcancer patients need support, encourage-ment and motivation to take the next step.So when you notice runners wearing their

specially designed running t-shirt or see theMAC gazebo somewhere in Melkbos withhappy, sweaty runners around, know thattheywould appreciate your support andmo-tivation for Fellows for Cancer by means ofa donation.V Visit www.melkbosathleticclub.co.za for more in-formation.

Whydo you run? It is a question people oftenask, curious as to why you would get up be-fore dawn to run gruelling kilometres, finis-hing drenched in sweat and sometimes withaching legs. But if they look closely they’ll see a smile

born of a sense of achievement. Everyonehas their own reason for running, be it to lo-se weight, to live healthily, or simply to pro-ve to yourself you can achieve a goal. Butit can be a lonely activity and a little helpgoes a long way.Melkbos Athletic Club (MAC) was started

20 years ago by local runners who saw theneed to support and encourage each other togo the distance. Over the years they’ve builtup an enthusiastic groupwho this year havejoined upwith theFellows forCancerTrust.TheFellows forCancerTrustwas establis-

hed in July 2009with the objective of suppor-ting and assistingmembers of the local com-munity who require treatment for cancerbut lack the means to afford it.Annual fundraising events include a sha-

LOUISA STEYL@lounotes

Singer and songwriter, David Meulenhas given himself the space to explorehis acoustic side on his new album and

first solo project, @davidmeulen.David used to front the band Dividable

Grand, who enjoyed success with their al-bum The Buzz, which resulted in them per-forming alongside some of the country’sbiggest rock acts.

“We had a good run,” David says of hisformer band, pointing out that they touredthe country a couple of times.

“I’ve always had an acoustic side to meand Dividable Grand was much more a rockband,” he says.

“The music I’m making now is much mo-re alternative acoustic vibes, more the indieside of things,” David says, although thereare still traces of his rock influence.

After Dividable Grand broke up, Davidtook a solo road trip along the Garden Rou-te. It took a while for him to “get into hisstride” writing acoustic instead of electricsongs, but it was when he made the decisionto write for himself and not an audience, that the songs started taking shape.

Early startDavid traces the start of his music career

back to when he was just six. He had got aguitar for his birthday after hearing a Beat-les song on the radio and loving it. “I thenwanted to be Paul McCartney. I only laterrealised he played bass not guitar, but bythen I was too far in,” David recalls.

“I’ve never really considered any othercareer,” he adds, saying that being a musici-an is all he ever wanted to do.

Producer Brendyn “Rusti” Rossouw, whoworked on The Buzz, produced, engineeredand co-wrote some of the songs on @david-meulen.

“We had a ton of really great people comein and play on the album,” David says.

Johnny Clegg’s drummer Barry van Zyland Dirty Skirts bassist Maurice Paliagaare just two of the big names who can be he-ard on David’s new offering.

“The two of them together- it’s just thebest rhythm section you can imagine,” hesays, smiling broadly.

David describes the album as minimalist,in the sense that their number one objectivewas to not overproduce it.

“We wanted to keep the essence of thesongs as they were written, with just guitarand foot stomping and vocals,” David ex-plains.

The idea was to enhance these elementsinstead of coating it in “general studiomish-mash”.

David reckons there is a nostalgic, som-bre feel to the album.

@davidmeulen will be launched at Roode-bloem Studios in Woodstock on Thursday, but David has plans to move away from atypical album launch.

Music sculptureHe’s pulled in the help of Odd Enjinears

who will be presenting their sound sculptu-res. “They basically make rhythmic, musi-cal sculptures out of metal and welding andstuff,” he explains.

They will also be using projections on aninfinity wall. “We want people to rememberit,” David says.

Tickets for David’s launch cost R30 at thedoor. Entrance is free if you buy his album.V For more about David, his new album and hislaunch, visit www.davidmeulen.com.V David gave TygerBurger readers a taste of his newalbum on the Orange Couch. Two exciting prospects in Luke Michael(19) and Nathan Fredericks (28) willmake their EFC debut on 5 June at EFC

Africa 30 at GrandWest. They fight out of REPS Fitness powering

Rico Hattingh’s MMA academy in Bellville.Luke (lightweight) from Goodwood and

Nathan (featherweight) from Kuils Riverare both excited about entering the hexagonfor what is their first step towards glory.According to their trainer Rico Hattingh,

both these guys have what it takes to makeit to the top.

Massive future“I am so excited about these guys. Luke

has amassive future aheadof him.He is only19-years-old and he puts his heart and soulinto this. I sometimes have to tell him to stopto prevent him fromburnout. His dedicationis phenomenal.”Luke trains three times a day for six days

a week. “I simply love what I do. Besides mybusy training schedule I help Rico with thetraining of children at schools,” said Luke.Nathan reckons having the experience of

Rico in his cornerwill have a calming effect.“Rico brings a lot of experience and experti-se. For now, we are conditioning and prep-ping for anyone. When it gets announcedwho we will face, then we will sit down andlook at the opponent’s strong and weakpoints. But themindset is thatwewill be rea-dy for anyone come 5 June,” said Nathan de-terminedly.“Nathan gets underestimated a lot, when

you stand in front of himhedoesn’t look inti-midating. But let me tell you he is as hardas nails. He has the rightmindset, he is hum-ble and a helluva all-round fighter.“So far I am happy with our preparation,

the guys are looking good, they are fit anddon’t have any niggling injuries. We shouldknow early May who their opponents willbe. The gameplan for now is to strengthentheir weak points and to improve theirstrong points even further,” said a confidentRico.

Winning swing: JJ Sun Kang (left) of Atlantic Beach Golf Club and Cara Gorlei fromMilnerton Golf Club finished third and fourth respectively during the recent Sanlam SAWomen’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Stellenbosch Golf Club. With them isSanlam sponsorship manager Gary van Loggerenberg.

KARTING: CAPE CHAMPS SEEK TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK

Local lads laydown the line

Delano Fowler and the Bam brothers aim to defend Cape glory in Junior Max.

The second round of South Africa’snewly united blockbuster nationalKart Championships races at the tric-

ky Killarney circuit on Saturday. With hometown racers enjoying a good

run, the locals are looking to extend severalchampionship advantages.

One class where Cape drivers dominatein the opening round is the open RotaxMaxChallenge 125cc class where local ace Euge-ne Denyssen (TonyKart) defends his nar-row championship lead from fellowCapeto-nians, Kosmic mounted Luke Herring andJulian van der Watt (Zanardi).

Another local ace to watch is JonathanAberdein (TonyKart) and only a fool wouldignore Birel driver Jurie Swart whomovedup from Junior Max this year. Jo’burg lassJennifer Verheul (FK) flies the female flag.

Cape youngster Charl Visser bringschampionship leads in the primary schoolMaxterino and Mini Rok 60cc classes homefollowing a greatweekend inPE lastmonth.

Zanardi-mounted Visser will be underpressure from local Maxterino rivals JPHamman (Kosmic), Dario Busi (TonyKart),Aidan Strydom (Zanardi) and Jason Coet-zee (Zanardi), but never discountGauteng’sLucaMunaretto (Birel) and upcountry Top-Kart drivers Tauriq Alibhai and KwandaMokoena.

InMiniRok, youngVisserwill once againhave to fend off local rivals Hamman andStrydom, not to mention PE driver JoshuaCoertze (Zanardi); Jozi Zanardi lads JordanNorth, Blaine Rademeyer and Dillon van

Vuuren, and the Top Kart quartet of JarrodWaberski, Nemo Mazuai, Alibhai and Mo-koena.

One class where Cape drivers will seekrevenge is the JuniorMax 125s where Dela-no Fowler (TonyKart) and brothers Kohenand Henry Bam (Kosmic) take on KZNchampionship leader Jordan Sherratt (Bi-rel). KZN arch-rival Clinton Bezuidenhout(Kosmic), Bloemfontein’s Stuart White (Za-nardi) andVereeniging’s JoshuaDias (Haa-se) will be looking for a piece of that pie butwill also have to contendwithCape Zanardidrivers Giordano Lupini, Dino Stermin,IsabellaFowler andChadleySwartz, aswellas Joshua Dolinschek (TonyKart).

Another class where Cape drivers will beout to prove a point is the DD2, with Wes-leigh Orr (Energy) and Luke van Rensburg(Zanardi) in the Cape corner. They’ll havetheir task cut out for thembyahost ofworldclass drivers on their wheels.
