“It was held at Camp Hope in Glencairnand sponsored by the Rainbow DreamsTrust.

Some schools in the community have joi-ned forces to get their learners combattingcrime.

In February this year four primaryschools met with representatives of theWestern Cape Education Department tooutline a programme against crime andgangsterism in the area.

Last week it all came together when Ty-gersig, Uitsig and Holy Trinity primaryschoolshosted the first of these interventi-

on programmes presented by the MetroPolice Social Crime Prevention Unit.

Activities included guest speakers talk-ing about the ills of gangsterism and therewas also lots of excitement and interest inthe demonstrations by the Metro Police’sK9 unit as well as the equestrian unit’shorse show.

Margaret Johannes, Social Crime pre-vention Coordinator for the Cape TownMetropolitan Police Department, pointedout that in addition to this initiative itwasalso decided at themeeting that theywantto use the learners to participate in a

school play illustrating the challengesthey face.

“We want them to show us these chal-lenges that they face like bullying, peerpressure, gangsterism, crime and drugabuse,” she said.

“The school play is scheduled for themiddle ofMay in the Cravenby Communi-ty Hall and rehearsals have already star-ted.

“Our hope is that this type of initiativewill grow and spread to other schools toteach learners that crime does not pay,”concluded Johannes.

The University of the Western Cape(UWC) in Bellville, an anti-apartheidbastion, is host to a new research cen-

tre that aims to help eradicate hunger.TheDepartment of Science andTechnolo-

gy (DST) and the National Research Foun-dation (NRF) last Tuesday launched a newCentre of Excellence inFoodSecurity at theUWC.“This centre of excellence is the first to

be co-hosted by a historic ‘black’ universi-ty,” science and technologyminister DerekHanekom said.He said UWChadmade great strides over

the last 13 years and he emphasised thatfood securitywas high on the government’slist of priorities.

Acute povertyHanekomnoted that despite SouthAfrica

being relatively wealthy, almost 25% of thepopulation was food insecure.“This is largely in the deep rural areas

or former bantustans – wherever povertyis at its most acute,” Hanekom said. The centre will run in conjunction with

the University of Pretoria and is headed byProf Julian May and Prof Stephanie Bur-ton.May said: “Food security means all peo-

ple need to have physical and economic ac-cess to sufficient, safe and nutritious foodto meet their dietary needs and food prefe-rences for a healthy and active lifestyle.”This centre of excellence (CoE) became

the fourteenth of its kind since the incepti-on of the CoE programme 10 years ago, andaims to make food readily available natio-

nally and locally so all people have accessto it, Hanekom said.“Obviously, food security is a subject that

requires comprehensive treatment...it in-volves questions of agricultural productionsystems, market dynamics, nutrition, peo-ple’s habits and preferences, our social se-curity system, and so on.“This is one reason why achieving food

security is such a challenge, and why thecentre of excellence approach is particular-ly appropriate in this case,” Hanekom said.

Overarching questionsDr Albert van Jaarsveld, chief executive

officer of theNRF, said: “According to a stu-dy released in 2013 by the Human SciencesResearch Council, more than half of SouthAfrica’s population does not have regularaccess to enough food.”UWC stated the new CoE will investigate

three overarching questions:VHow global and national food systems

are changing and how this affects the sus-tainability, availability, access and attribu-tes of food.

VDetermining who the “food insecure”are:where theyare located, what their choi-ces, strategies and opportunities are, theirhealth and well-being, and how these as-pects change in response to changing foodsystems.Hanekom added that the new CoE would

be bringing together experts and resear-chers from19 SouthAfrican and internatio-nal institutions.V Enquiries to David Mandaha at David.Manda[email protected] or 072 126 8910, or Palesa Mokoenaat [email protected] or 083 494 2322 orLuthando Tyhalibongo at [email protected] 079 880 4655.

been gebring en so ver as Durban en dieSuidkus gereis om sy kuns te pleeg. Hy isnou al 22 jaar op dieselfde plek in Ruyter-

Mister (Jimmy)Adams gevat. Ditwas virmy’n groot eer toe Mister Adams my masjienvir ’n kunswerk gebruik,” vertel Donnie.

The National Arts Festival and the City ofCape Town have taken hands to launch anew performing arts festival in the city inSeptember.Based on similar festivals in cities like

New York, Amsterdam and Edinburgh, fes-tival CEO Tony Lankester says the new Ca-pe Town Fringe Festival will feature “yo-ung, dynamic and cutting edge” talent.“The Fringe model rests on two pillars –

firstly the nature of the work on a Fringeis such that it is bold, innovative, excitingand it pushes boundaries for both artistsand audiences; secondly a Fringe festivalhas a business model behind it which en-courages independence and sustainability, while costs are shared between perfor-mers,” he says. The Cape Town Fringe aims to present

around 40 productions in venues in andaround the city centre, aswell as in satellitevenues in areas such as Langa.“Access is critical to the success of a Frin-

ge and was a big factor in our decision toproceed with this project,” executive depu-tymayor, IanNeilson, actingMayoral Com-mittee Member for Tourism, Events andMarketing says.Neilson says the National Arts Festival

(NAF) has 40 years proven experience athosting perhaps the most significant artsfestival in the country.“It has pursued a new strategy of expansi-

on. Cape Town is its first major ongoing fo-ray outside of Grahamstown,” he pointsout.Nielson also points to the fact that the fes-

tival will help increase tourism in what’susually the still low season in Cape Town.“There is a need to up bed numbers at ourhotels and to increase tourists.”The festivalwill beheld at variousvenues

and theatres around the city, helping to cre-ate job opportunities in the performing artssector and the hospitality industry.“Ticket pricing, choice of venues as well

as the scheduling of performances all con-tribute to making a Fringe Festival appealto asmany people as possible, both traditio-nal and non-traditional theatre-going audi-ences,” Neilson continues. While the Fringe will use as many as 16

venues, Cape Town’s CityHall will form the‘home base’ for the event, and will boast se-veral performancevenuesandaFringeHubwhere artists, audiences and themedia willgather at the end of each day.V The Cape Town Fringe will run from 25 Septemberuntil 5 October 2014. We have a small business. Wework day and night to keepour business going. Mostmonths we earn enough for abasic living, but sometimes wedo not have food on our table.

I just read in a local newspa-per about a company – a smallbusiness like ours – that wassued by a client for not doingthe work the way the clientwanted it done. The client sayswithin 24 hours the owner ofthe business was there to dothe job. But after it was done,he struggled to get the busi-ness owner back to fix minorthings.

As customers we are told tocomplain about everything. But, we are forced to startsmall businesses because weare unable to find work in ourcountry.

We have to jump at everywork opportunity that comesour way. We do not alwayshave money to go back tocompleted jobs, as we have tojump to the next job to sur-vive.

The business owner I men-tioned had to pay a large sumback to the client. He did notpay until the client threatenedwith further legal action.

I bet he did not have thecash to pay straight away. Wealso live from one job to theother, with no cash in between.

Please consider small busi-ness owners’ positions. Do notfight and threaten legal actionon every little aspect. We wantto make you happy, butsometimes things go wrong.

Help us grow and do not tryyour utmost to break us down.

Our economy is bad and, assmall business owners, we arethe first to feel the impact.

Please pick upafter your dogI have been fortunate to live inparadise opposite AmandelClose and Fynbos dams for thepast 22 years. Lately, a lot ofpeople who do not live in thearea have discovered thebeautiful spot. They live inProtea Valley, Riebeeckshof orOude Westhof to name a few. There is no problem with that.

They come here with theirdogs – also no problem, butthey let their dogs use the placeas a public toilet and do notclean up after them. We neverhad a problem with flies, butnow we have flies throughoutthe year.

I take walks there and haveonly seen one woman with aplastic bag in her hand. Sheties the bag over her hand andpicks up what her dog leavesbehind.

I spoke to her and she wasalso upset that people just leavethe dog mess behind. She saidin the country she came from, people would never think ofbeing so careless.

If they did, they would get afine.

If your dog gets sick, you takehim to the vet because you loveyour dog. So why not cleanafter him?

If you don’t like to takedroppings in the bag home, throw it in the bins provided.Come on people, bring back themagic to the Magic Forest.

Wheelie bins mustbe put back properly

We recently visited the circusand were met by a handful ofprotesters at the robots.

We enjoyed the show and itwas well attended. We even hadthe opportunity to feed theanimals, which was somethingmy daughter will never forget.

We are in full support of thecircus and will always welcomethem back to Parow.

Maybe the people at therobots should have taken 10minutes to see for themselves.

This circus is nothing butamazing and made me think ofmy childhood, when we alsovisited the circus. Those yearsit was a huge event at the oldGoodwood Showgrounds.Everyone dressed up, whiletheir hotdogs and popcorn weretops!

A champion disabled athlete is motivatingyoung people to appreciate the advantagesthey have in life.FabianMichaels (29) from Elsies River is

following his dream to become a worldchamp by recently participating in theSouth African Games for the Disabled heldin Stellenbosch. Competing in the F35 classforCerebral Palsy athletes, he broke the all-Africa records for discus, javelin and shot-put.“In fact, I broke the shotput record four

times already,” he says with an infectioussmile. “When it comes to the internationalscene in this class in javelin I am secondin theworld rankings, third for shotput andfourth in discus, but that will be improvingshortly.”

International achievementFabian is no stranger to international

achievement. As a junior he was a worldchampion in javelin and won medals at theParalympics in Athens and Sydney. His recent achievements have motivated

him to concentrate on his sport and partici-pation in more international events.“My coaches in Stellenbosch have been

part of thismotivation forme to aimhigher, but I am going to need more sponsorship totake part in those events more regularly,”he says.“People must see disabled sport in a new

light, especially here in SouthAfricawherewe can play a big part in encouraging theable-bodied to achieve beyond any disad-vantages. If people start realising howmuch harder we must work to become thebest at what we do it will inspire them tobe the best with all their talents.”Part of this hard work towards olympics

in 2016 is travelling to Stellenbosch duringthe week for intense training.“I have to use public transport every day,

which is very difficult,” he says.

Positive goalsFabian also wants to make a difference

in his community by motivating youth towork toward positive goals.“I amdisappointedwith all the crime that

attracts the youth in our areas. They are he-althy and able yet they can’t look beyondtheir social circumstances to achieve in li-fe.“Part of what want to do is to go out there

and show children how I have made a diffe-rence, tell them howmuch harder I have towork and hopefully they will see a way toa brighter future.”In conclusion the athlete feels very stron-

gly about the nickname for the para-olym-pic team.“Whymust we be called “ama-kroko-kro-

A home composting pilot study has, injust eightmonths, kept 40 tons ofwas-te out of city landfill sites.

According to James Vos, chairperson ofsubcouncil 3, whose household is takingpart in the study, home composting is a no-cost and rewarding excercise.

“Maintaining a garden can be costly andhome-composting is a self-sustaining in-vestment. Furthermore, rich and healthysoil is required for the cultivation of our ve-getable garden, which saves us even moremoney in the long term,” he says.

The Vos household is one of nearly 650households takingpart in theongoing studyconducted by the City of Cape Town.

FeedbackEach household has been provided with

composting containers and instructions. They have agreed to provide the city withmonthly feedback on the progress of theircomposting efforts, with the data being re-corded in notebooks issued to them.

“My wife and I are excited to be part ofthe pilot project” Vos says. “Many peoplestart composting for practical reasons.Composting your leaves, grass clippings, garden waste and food scraps reduces theamount of garbage you generate.

“Our food scraps and yard waste current-ly make up 20 % to 30 % of what we throwaway. Making compost keeps these materi-als out of landfills where they take up spaceand release methane, a potent greenhousegas,” says Vos.

Ernest Sonnenberg, the city’s mayoralcommittee member for utility ervices, saysthe study is being conducted as a result of

the overuse of the city’s landfill sites.“The research is geared towards the city’s

goal of being a waste-wise society and ourcommitment to being a caring and well-runcity. Composting has numerous environ-mental benefits: it reduces water use by upto 70% and reduces erosion and pollution,”he says.

Waste diversionAccording to the study’s preliminary sta-

tistics, of the 1,6 million tons of waste direc-ted to the city’s landfills each year, approx-imately 6 % consists of garden and house-hold organic waste (95 000 tons per annum),while approximately 5 %ismadeupof orga-nic kitchen waste (80 000 tons per annum).“This is equivalent to a possible average of11 kg per household per month of gardenwaste, as well as 10 kg per household permonth of organic kitchen waste,” Vos says.

When organicmaterial is composted, car-bon is returned to the soil. Mulching (theplacement of organic waste over soil to lockinmoisture and improve the soil condition)reduces water use by up to 70 %. Compostimproves the garden soil’s water-holdingcapacity, thus reducing water needs, and itimproves the resistance of plants to droughtor dry spells. Mulches and compost reducerun-off, erosion and pollution, while com-post also improves the condition of rosesand vegetables in the garden.

Sonnenburg is encouraging all residentsto make compost for their gardens. He saysbins can be bought at garden centres andhardware stores, but if you do not want tospend money you can simply make a com-post heap in the corner of your garden.VThe SMART Living Handbook is available at the public library, at www.capetown.gov.za/environmentor email [email protected].

A couple who cares about their communityhas inspired a young man in Bonteheuwelto motivate others to follow their lead andbeautify their neighbourhood.

Dean Jates is already well-known for hisyouth empowerment projects in the area, islaunching the MaakMikaSterk initiative.

He started it after being impressed withthe efforts of Dawood and Radia Salie whostarted a garden in their neighbourhood.

“Dawood and Radia Salie live in AssagaaiLaan and even though they are unemployed, decided they are going to make a differencewhere they live,” he says.

“I am currently enrolled in a three yearprogramme called Activate LeadershipChange Driver and one ofmy studymodulesis to organise a one-day volunteer day eventwhich in this case will be on-going for theparticipants.

“Dawood and Radia’s initiative inspiredme because everyday I walk past their gar-den, an area that was a dumping site and hotspot for gang activities, but they transfor-med it into a garden where you felt safe.”

Inspired, Dean decided to create a conceptthat would call on more people to volunteer

their time, expertise, resources, ideas andpositive spirit to ehance their surroundings.

“I drew up a proposal for the communityto support their initiative, comprising threeoptions where they can assist with garde-ning in the area,” he says.

“Firstly it’s to call on people to provide tenlitres of water per month for the project, vo-lunteer four hours of their time per month, and also donate R5 per week.

“The concept of MaakMikaSterk is tofunction alongside formal and informal ide-as or initiatives to create practical approa-ches for people topractice andbecomeactivecitizens in their neighbourhoods.

“Its not just about making a place look ni-ce . With this project people will start lear-ning to know their neighbours and theircommunity.

Dean said theActivate ChangeDriver pro-gramme is anetworkof young leaders equip-ped to drive change for the public goodacross South Africa.

“We are a network of young change-ma-kers across South Africa who are finding in-novative ways to transform our communi-ties and the country as a whole.

“We are doing this by thinking outside thebox for innovative and effective solutions tosome of our toughest challenges.”

Daar is ’n paar leesboekies.

The planned memorialsite for the ten victims ofthe Buttskop levelcrossing accident in 2010near Blackheath werediscussed at a recentsubcouncil meeting. Arepresentative from theCity of Cape Town’sparks departmentinformed councillors atthe meeting held lastweek that a suitablepiece of land had beenidentified near the crashsite and approved byMetrorail. However, objections to the proposalwere raised by a representative from the city’sdepartment for roads andtransport. The twodepartment’s will nowdiscuss the issue furtherand have been instructedto submit a report at thenext council meeting.

Buttskop memorial remains unresolvedRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

Fears that the planned memorial sitefor the children who died at the Butt-skop level crossing might only be re-

solved after the release of themanwhowasdriving the vehicle at the time of the tragicaccident, was a concern raised at a councilmeeting last week.Majidie Abrahams, the PR councillor,

who raised this concern, was responding toyet another hurdle in the process of finali-sing the matter. His concern cameafter a roads and trans-

port department representative objected toa proposal by a member of the city parksdepartment who presented council with apiece of land suitable for the memorial.SusanBrice, cemetery coordinator at the

parks department, said the land identified

was approved by Metrorail.“As you know we have looked at several

sites in thearea, oneof those sites is on landowned by Sanral near Brights,” Brice said. The piece of land identified as a possible

site, however, is located at the edge of thecrossing, opposite Sanal’s property.“The land is also the spot where the taxi

came to a halt after being hit by the train,”Brice said.

Memorial WallThe proposed memorial wall will be

about six meters long and 1.2 meters high. The parks department’s plan is to erect 10concrete crosses on this wall.“The names of the children can either be

on the cross, or on the side of thewall,” Bri-ce said during her presentation.Although the proposal was welcomed by

some council members, the department of

roads and transport raised concerns.Dennis de Villiers, manager at the de-

partment, said a road is planned for theparticular site, as well as work to the exis-ting Buttskop level crossing.“Plus there is a new Eskom power line

that will be in the corridor,” he said. Thus the current location indicated by

Brice cannot be supported by their depart-ment.He suggested that the two departments

meet to discuss the matter further.Abrahams said theywould like to see the

matter finalised as soon as possible.“It is not the first timewehear of challen-

ges. Parks first had their issue, then traffic. Now other issues and constraints arise.“It took us 18 months just to sort out the

Sanral issue, but now it’s something else.”He suggested a compromise: that a me-

morial plaque be erected at the site and a

memorial site established in the gravey-ard.“My fear is that by the time we eventual-

ly come to a solution the driverwill be rele-ased from prison. Let us apply our minds.”

Other sitesOther options for a memorial site, accor-

ding to Brice, include the schools the vic-tims attended, or the city’s parks.Abrahams asked for an extension of no

longer than threemonths. “By then we canhave a full report on the matter, we cannotkeep the item so open-ended on the agenda,we need a yes or no,” he said. The ten children who passed away are

Dianne Steyn is 48 years old, yet she li-ves in an old-age home. She suffersfrom multiple sclerosis (MS) and can-

not take care of herself. In a recent letter to TygerBurger – which

took her three drafts painstakingly typedwith one finger on her donated special key-board – she tells of her illness and the effectit has had on her life. Her tale starts in Dur-ban and ends in theOnsTuisteHome inBell-ville.TygerBurger readers may have heard of

her plight in a drive to buyher the keyboard.(“Samel geld in vir sleutelbord”, TygerBur-ger, 10 October 2012).“I was diagnosed way back in 1993. I lived

the high life for the next 15 years – a housein Sunset Beach; drove a Mercedes and abakkie. Had four dogs, a full-time housekee-per and more. I was very happy with it all. Then the ‘happiness bubble’ burst,” she wri-tes.“I had moved back to Table View. My

dream house. Things seemed to be goingwell. Despite the fact that I was now wheel-chair-bound, I had more symptoms of MSrearing like bladder problems, speech pro-blems, cognitive problems.”Dianne says with the increase of these

physical impediments, she struggled to runher business and home. Her partner eventu-ally had to take over.“This was the end for me.”Dianne eventually moved in with her pa-

rents inDurban.Herhouse andbusinesswe-re liquidated by her partner.“The sadness I felt was immense – my life,

all I had worked for, was ripped away fromme!” she writes.Dianne then returned to Cape Town to try

to put things in order.“Then Iwasmoved to an old age home. I’m

only 48years old –hardlyanold-agedperson.I continue daily with mymedication just waitingfor a cure. . .”Delia Enright is thema-

nager at Ons Tuiste. Sheexplained to TygerBurgerwhat the care of an MSsufferer looks like.“We take care of twoMS

sufferers. Dianne Steynwas admitted in 2008 be-cause her neurological sy-stem was affected to thepoint where she is wheel-chair-bound.She is dependent on complete nursing ca-

re and the only affordable accommodationwas at the Ons Tuiste ACVV service branch,a care home for older persons.“The other ladywas admitted as a 74-year-

old.”“A huge obstacle in the care of MS suffe-

rers is to find affordable care, especially inan advanced stage of the illness. MS suffe-rers who receive a disability grant struggleto find this accommodation and are mostlydependent on family for financial support. The costs involved are very high,” Delia

says. She explains the cost of a care unit can be

anything between R5 000 and R15 000.“Then there are costs such as medication,

diapers, (about R500 per month), clothingand toiletries, medical equipment such aswheelchairs and special mattresses. Theseare basic costs and exclude the costs of a the-rapist – anecessarypart of treatment ofMS.”

She says a basic subsi-dy of R2148 is paid to re-gistered care facilities bythe Department of SocialDevelopment for patientsearning less than R1 400per month.“With the disability

grant of R1 260 there arefew organisations whichcan give full-timenursingcare at this cost.”The subsidy falls away

if the person is youngerthan 60, but if they were admitted before2006, when the Older Persons Law was pas-sed, and they’re younger than 60, they stillqualify.Delia says it is particularly difficult to ca-

re for younger sufferers of MS, like Dianne.“This is because the illness touches the

person on all levels – physically, psychologi-cally, socially and financially. It affects theneurological and immune systems and the symptoms are discerna-

ble from a young age – as young as 20.“The most common symptoms are tired-

ness, lack of concentration, pain prickles,

muscle weakening and dejectedness. In so-me instances it affects the person’s functio-ning and the person stops being productiveat a young age and cannot work.“A younger sufferer cannot enjoy any of

the things they used to, like hobbies, and theperson can quite literally become trapped ina body that will not cooperate.”A team of doctors, occupational thera-

pists, physiotherapists and speech thera-pists need to help maintain the patient’sfunctioning as long as possible.“A sufferer becomes incontinent and can

easily choke on food because of weak mus-cles.“Older persons’ level of acceptance of the

illness is more ready – they’ve had a full life.Denial with younger sufferers is sometimesproblematic, because they wish for medicalstaff to be visited regularly – to see if thereis anything that can help the patient walkagain or better their condition.“With younger patients a computer and

internet is a valuable way to communicateand keep social contact. A special computerwith a big keyboard made a huge differencein Dianne’s life. It was bought from donati-ons that were received for this purpose.”

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Two exciting prospects in Luke Michael(19) and Nathan Fredericks (28) willmake their EFC debut on 5 June at EFC

Africa 30 at GrandWest. They fight out of REPS Fitness powering

Rico Hattingh’s MMA academy in Bellville.Luke (lightweight) from Goodwood and

Nathan (featherweight) from Kuils Riverare both excited about entering the hexagonfor what is their first step towards glory.According to their trainer Rico Hattingh,

both these guys have what it takes to makeit to the top.

Massive future“I am so excited about these guys. Luke

has amassive future aheadof him.He is only19-years-old and he puts his heart and soulinto this. I sometimes have to tell him to stopto prevent him fromburnout. His dedicationis phenomenal.”Luke trains three times a day for six days

a week. “I simply love what I do. Besides mybusy training schedule I help Rico with the

training of children at schools,” said Luke.Nathan reckons having the experience of

Rico in his cornerwill have a calming effect.“Rico brings a lot of experience and experti-se. For now, we are conditioning and prep-ping for anyone. When it gets announcedwho we will face, then we will sit down andlook at the opponent’s strong and weakpoints. But themindset is thatwewill be rea-dy for anyone come 5 June,” said Nathan de-terminedly.

Underestimated“Nathan gets underestimated a lot, when

you stand in front of himhedoesn’t look inti-midating. But let me tell you he is as hardas nails. He has the rightmindset, he is hum-ble and a helluva all-round fighter.“So far I am happy with our preperation,

the guys are looking good, they are fit anddon’t have any niggling injuries. We shouldknow early May who their opponents willbe. The gameplan for now is to strengthentheir weak points and to improve theirstrong points even further,” said a confidentRico.

THOMAS CAROLUS

Ajax Cape Town are the 2014 Metropoli-tan u-19 Premier Cup champions afterbeating Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in a

thoroughly engrossing final at Erica Park inBelhar on Monday afternoon.A stunning long range strike by winger

Charlton Basson in the eighth minute pro-ved decisive as the young Urban Warriorssecured their second successive title, andsixth overall, to draw level with Hellenic asthemost prolificwinners of the tournament.Sundowns battledmanfully but the superblymarshalled Ajax side gave them no openingto level the score and, in fact, were unfortu-

nate not to have won by a wider margin.“We are overwhelmed to win it. Although

we were confident, we didn’t expect to winit but everybody worked so hard for eachother and it worked out great for us, I’m justso happy right now,” said delighted Ajaxskipper Yagan Sasman before rushing off tocelebrate with his teammates.

High spiritsVictorious coach Maaher Davids was in

equally high spirits afterwards, and hadhigh praise for the foundations laid at theclub. “This is a great achievement for theclub and it shows that we have the best aca-demy in the country, possibly even in Afri-

ca. We weren’t the favourites but we camein and proved everybody wrong,” he said.“This is always a great event for players toplay in and I’d like to thank the organisersand sponsors, Metropolitan, for making ithappen. To end up as champions is the cher-ry on top.”“Congratulations to Ajax on their well-de-

served victory. Once again, this tournamenthas raised the quality of youth football inSouth Africa and it is a source of great satis-faction to see our vision of making genuineprogress reflected in the continued improve-ment in standards on the field of play, aswellas in the administration and organisationthat has enhanced the prestige and profile

of the Metropolitan u-19 Premier Cup,” saidMetropolitan brand executive Belinda Faul-kner.

Floating trophyThe winners received a fabulous floating

trophy which they can display in their cabi-net for the next year, plus a cheque for R35000. The runners up received R20 000 fortheir valiant effort in making the final aspectacle to remember.During the morning the Plate section Fi-

nal was won by Senoane Gunners, who beatHarmonyAcademy 1-0, and in theMid-Secti-on Final Glendene United overcame BidvestWits by the same score.
