dat wetstoepassingsinisiatiewe wél aange-wakker is nie. Ons besef dat die kwessie vanhaweloses ’n egte bekommernis vir ons al-mal is en ’n groot uitdaging vir die Stad ensy inwoners.“Ons almal moet ook eienaarskap neem

van kwessies en dit verantwoordelik aan-meld, veral waar ons jong kinders en leerin-stellings verteenwoordig,” het hy gesê.“Straatbewoners is berug daarvoor dat

hulle ‘onnet’ is en laat baie keer ’n string vul-lis en ander gemors en vuurskade agter. Dis’n groot uitdaging vir die Stad en sy inwo-ners. Ons reageer gereeld op klagteswat ver-band hou met straatbewoners.“Alle klagtes wat by die Stad geregistreer

word, word deurmiddel van e-pos, die inbel-sentrum of per SMS ontvang. Die klagte kry’n verwysingsnommer, waarop daar dan ge-reageer word.“Ek sal met graagte help om die nodige

VTherewill be a semi-express trainwhichdoes not stop at all stations. The train willstop only at Mbekweni, Dal Josafat, Mul-dersvlei,Kraaifontein, StiklandandBellvil-le. The service will depart from Wellingtonat 04:50 and arrive at Bellville station at05:59.

VA second semi-express train will departfrom Wellington at 07:46 and arrive at Bell-ville station at 08:48.In the afternoon the same stops will ap-

ply, in reverse, and arrival times are as fol-lows:

VThe first semi-express train in the after-noon departs Bellville at 16:08 and arrivesat Wellington station at 17:10.

VThe second semi-express train in the af-ternoon departs Bellville at 18:40 and arri-ves at Wellington station at 19:42.

In one week four railway police stations,including the Bellville unit, made a num-ber of arrests during clampdown operati-ons.Theoperationswere runat four rail stati-

ons – Bellville, Cape Town, Philippi and Re-treat – from Sunday 30 March to Sunday 6April as part of a drive to ensure commutersafety at these stations, said Colonel Them-binkosi Kinana, a provincial police spokes-person.He said during patrols in the trains and

along stations, stop-and-search procedureswere conducted and a number of suspectsarrested on charges ranging fromassault torape to robbery and malicious damage toproperty.One arrest at the Bellville station follo-

wed a suspect being found in possession ofcounterfeit R100 notes, as well as a chargefor theft, he said.

ClampdownKinana said a total of 28 suspects were ar-

rested for carrying tik, dagga, heroine,mandrax or khat on their person.Two suspects at Bellvillewere found to be

in possession of dangerous weapons – kni-ves – at the Bellville station and two atKleinvlei, among other related arrests, hesaid.For lesser transgressions such as urina-

ting in public, illegally crossing the railwaytracks, holding a train door open while thetrain is inmotion andnot possessing a validtrain ticket, a number of people received so-called J534 fines.“A vehicle, Mazda 323, registration num-

ber CA923443, was stolen in Durbanvilleand was recovered by the railway policemembers – found abandoned.“In total 86 suspects were either arrested

or received a J534 in the rail environment.Drugs and other goods to the value of a totalof R39 871 were recovered,” Kinana said.

“Approximately 750 000 commutersmakeuse of the train on a daily basis and are poli-ced by the railway police. There are approx-imately 688 train trips during the day thatare policed jointly by Railway Police mem-bers andMetrorail Protection Services andtheir contracted security members.”He said 485 trainswere patrolled, 3 975 pe-

ople were searched, 103 vehicles were sear-ched, 1 431 visits to rail stations and 173 footpatrols were conducted.Metorail released a statement last week

Asuspected thief got a surprise on Fri-day when confronted with police stop-and-search operations in Oakdale,

said Captain Fienie Nimb, the Bellville poli-ce spokesperson.The area has recently been in the spot-

light, with a number of operations by the lo-cal neighbourhood watch to curb vagrants.Police also confirmed drug dealers sell theirwares in the parking lot of the 24-hour

M-Kem pharmacy.Commenting on Friday’s operations,

Nimb said vehicles were stopped and sear-ched for drugs and stolen property.“A taxi was stopped and passengers were

asked to get out for a routine search. Onepassenger had a backpack.“When it was searched, a car radio, along

with copper wires and pliers were found in-side the bag,” she said.Nimb said the man couldn’t explain why

he was in possession of the items and fledthe scene, running across the road toward

the residential area.“The police gave chase. The suspect jum-

ped numerous fences and eventually got onthe roof of a business premises in Sarel Cil-liers Street,” she said.“The suspect then attempted to jump from

the roof to a parking area located behind thebuilding. In doing so he injured himself andwas unable to move any further.”The 28-year-old man from Belhar was arre-

sted and detained at the Bellville police stati-on. Nimb said the public deserved a thankyou for “assisting the police in this matter as

they gave indications and directions allalong the way.”Mark Stewart, chairman of the local

neighbourhood watch, said their organisa-tion was very pleased with the arrest.“The police

are to be com-mended firstlyfor the stop-and-search initiati-ve, as well as thefact that theycould arrest thesuspect in theend.“The main ob-

jective is to getthe suspect be-hind bars iffound guilty ofany crime,” hesaid.“The previous month the police reported

at one of ourmeetings that thefts out of mo-tor vehicles in our sector had dropped by37% for the same period when compared tothe previous year.“With initiatives such as this by the poli-

ce, and with the help of Oakdale Watch pa-trollers we are definitely making continu-ed progress in our fight against crime,” hesaid.PieterBlaauw, chair of theBellvilleCom-

Members of The Settlers High Dyna-mix jazz band recently rode thecrest of a musical tsunami when

they got to perform alongside internationaljazz greats, Shakatak.

Prior to the fantastic opportunity, thegroup were armed with hands-on showbizknowledge when they completed a coursefor arts and culture focus schools fromacross the Western Cape.

Craig Parks, a coordinator of the CapeTown International Jazz Festival YouthTraining and Development Programme, ex-plained that through the programme lear-ners were taught about the “behind the sce-nes” side of the music industry, with the fo-cus on putting together a festival.

The four-week programme culminated ina concert by the ten participating schoolson Sunday 23 March.

These schools included The Settlers,Groote Schuur, South Peninsula, Wynberg,Heathfield, Chris Hani and Belhar HighSchools, as well as participation by lear-ners from the Cape Music Institute, CrystalHouse Academy and the Intyholo SchoolsProject.

A sea of peopleAs part of the programme, the schools we-

re invited to be part of the Cape Town JazzFestival, with the chance to play on one ofthe festival stages.

They are treated like any other artist,Craig said.

“I promise you, the stars get made here,”he said.

Tracey Appolis, the Dynamix’s band di-rector, said three of the band members –Keenan Jacobs, Jodi Fredericks and Dami-an Kamineth – were selected through theprogramme to perform in the Schools AllStar Superband.

This band then went on to perform at theCape Town International Jazz Festival FreeConcert at Green Market Square on Wed-nesday 26 March.

“They were overwhelmed by the sea of pe-ople and enjoyed entertaining the crowd,”Tracey said.

A few days later the All Stars got to openfor international band Shakatak at the Sun-day After Jazz Concert at MaynardvillePark on Sunday 30 March.

Dynamix band member Jodi Fredericks(18) told TygerBurger how exciting the ex-perience was.

“Wow! Wow! And wow again! Really,what an honour. I mean Shakatak has beencoming on for years. They’re legends, andto have shared the same stage was an extre-me honour. Truly a blessing,” Jodi said.

Tracey said this was the biggest stage theband had ever performed on.

“They have worked extremelyhard...They have achieved a lot and impro-ved significantly in a short space of time,”she said.

“These young musicians have broughtgood credit to the school, I am very proudof them, proud to be their teacher, and I amlooking forward to a year filled with manymore musical experiences and growth,”enthused Tracey.

Jodi’s mom, Renee Sellidon, said she hadhigh hopes for her daughter’s musical ca-reer.

Religion is the latest ruse scamsters areusing to rob church-going senior citi-zens.

This is according to the Bellville police,afterTygerBurger enquired about an elder-ly woman from Boston who was recentlyconned out of hermoney by a couple posingas devout church-goers.“It is a known fact that criminals prey on

the vulnerable, especially women, childrenand the elderly. Many scams doing therounds have to do with criminals who ‘soft-talk’ people to get entry into their home,”said Captain Fienie Nimb, spokeswoman ofthe Bellville police.“It has come to the police’s attention that

this has become a trend for perpetrators –to target elderly people at churches andalsoin shopping centres.”

Master manipulatorsThis follows on an incident involving 88-

year-old Stefanie Bowles who lives alone inher home in Boston.“I want to warn people of a young couple

who do their ill deeds through the church,”she said.Stefanie said she had attended a Sunday

service at the Lutheran Church in Bellvillewhen the incident happened.“The offending couple attended the Ger-

man service, pretending to be of the Luthe-ran faith. I thought they were from ourchurch – good people. Afterwards they beg-ged to be taken home to Boston. My friendwho takes me home was taken in by theirpleas and eventually allowed them to get alift with us,” she said.“After arrival in Boston, they demanded

to be allowed to go into my house in orderto use my toilet. The young man pretendedto be very frail and engagedme in conversa-tion.“Eventually the woman came out of my

bathroom, then asked for water and bis-cuits while she started looking at myrooms. I told them I am tired, theymust go,”she said.“They eventually left and that is when I

saw thewoman had rummaged throughmydrawers. My jewellery box ended up in a lo-cation I never would have put it. If she hadhad just a little more time, I believe shewould have stolen it from the drawer in mybedroom.”

Gaining entry“It happened so quickly, I never noticed

the displacement. Only after letting themout did I discover the displaced jewellerybox – which I found much later – and themissingmoney frommypurse thatwas stillin my handbag next to the drawer.”Nimb says the scammers are master ma-

nipulators.“They will be so convincing that one

The innocent pleading eyes of previouslyabused or neglected animals look up atyou, willing to give their hearts as

you step into the Uitsig Animal RescueCentre.

It is unthinkable that the some 500 rescuedanimals on these premisesmight be withouta home in three months time.

The organisation last week received no-tice to vacate the smallholding nearFisantekraal to make space for the Green-ville Garden City housing development.

It is a very real probability that these ani-mals could lose their lives if the organisa-tion loses its facilities. However, for the fer-vent, tough-as-nails animal lovers and pas-sionate founders and members of thisexceptional organisation, it’s not an option.

Massive mandate“Failure is not an option. It is a big worry

for us, but for the sake of the animalswe can-not afford to not succeed,” said foundingmember Denay Saunders, about the organi-sation’s quest to now find new land to homethe animals.

Her love and genuine concern for the wel-fare of animals is visible in the unselfishwork she, her 15 staff members and othervolunteers have put into the organisationsince its inception in 2009.

A former veterinarian assistant, it washer intention to provide abandoned and sur-rendered animals with a short-term alterna-tive to euthanasia.

Their mandate is gigantic: to rescue ne-glected, abandoned and abused animals inthe northern suburbs of Cape Town and tonurse them back to health, provide themwith a safe and loveable haven, to rehabili-tate them and to find them permanenthomes.

In fact, the centre is the only pro-life, pro-quality-of-life animal rescue haven withpremises in the northern suburbs. Thismeans they also house animals fromvariousother shelters and animal welfare organisa-tions such as the Lucky Lucy Foundation,Adopt-a-Pet and the Animal Rescue Team.

“We believe that all animals have a secondchance no matter how neglected or abusedthey were when we found them. We do notbelieve in euthanising animals andwill onlydo so in exceptional circumstanceswhere ananimal is either suffering or could not be re-habilitated. We believe in providing all ouranimals with quality of life, sufficient food,shelter and attention, until such timewe canre-home them with a suitable family,” saysDenay.

An unrealistic feat?“No. There is much hope. We have had

great success with our adoptions, while atthe same time we undertake sterilisationand animal care education programmes inunderprivileged areas and townships, to ad-

dress the problem at the core. Additionally,all the animals we rescue stay on at the cen-tre for an unlimited period of time,” shesays.

No hard feelingsAccording to Denay, they have no gripe

with the land owners, as they were awarefrom the start that the land was earmarkedfor development and their stay would onlybe temporary.

“Our landlords were very good and gener-ous to us over the years and we realise theimportance of housing. It’s just that it camedown on us rather suddenly and we nowhave to move very fast to raise the funds weneed to re-establish the centre,” she said.

The centre envisions purchasing theirown land, registering it in a trust and re-building their shelters on it for the exclusiveuse of the rescue centre.

“We have been working, for some timenow, on a future vision for a new largerworld class animal rescue centre from

which we can accomplish much more thaneven what we do now. We just had no ideathat we would have to do it so soon!”

“Weare solely dependent onpublic donorsand our own fundraising, but believe thatwith thehelp of the communitywe can reachor target in time,” she said, and adds:“Please everyone, we have only 90 days toraise what we need. The alternative is un-thinkable and will crush so many of us.”

Planning phaseCEO of Garden Cities JohnMatthews con-

firmed that theywere in theplanningphasesof phase 2 of the project, but they had giventhe farm manager of the Uitsig Farm appro-priate legal notice that they would only re-quire the land by the end of next year.

He said that the lease between the farmmanager and the centre stipulated threemonths but this notice period was not to hisknowledge envoked as yet.

“I am however happy to engage with thecentre in order to find a solution,” he said.

“We are already negotiating with theLucky Lucy Foundation who is also on theland as we acknowledge the existence of andthe need for the animal shelters.”

The organisation would need about R5million, of which they have raised R50 000to date.

After a lifetime of abuse, threebrave young people broketheir silence and made a da-

ring stand against their attacker.Not only did local siblings Teri-

AnnRobinson (18), KaileeRobinson(16) andJasonRoberts (22) empowerthemselves through creating aFacebook page but they provided aplatform for others in the same situ-ation to do the same.

The Facebook page, started eightmonths ago, is a forum created byteenagers, for teenagers to speakout against abuse and domestic vio-lence.

The siblings decided to go publicabout their own abuse after reali-sing the desperate plight of somanyof their peers at their school.

“After we started talking aboutour own circumstances, a floodgateof other, similar stories reached ourears,” says Kailee.

A post on their page describestheir objective best.

“Our intention was to speak out...Furthermore, our situation is me-ant to assist anyone and help is gi-ven privately or people are referredif needed…The idea is also to empo-wer ourselves and others, to healour trampled lives as best as wecan.”

Their personal ordeal has beenendless.

“Since we can remember it has al-ways been the same. He has abusedus and our mom verbally, emotio-nally, physically and even financial-ly,” says Kailee.

Older brother Jason often tookthe brunt of the abuse, with several

physical attacks.Due to their abuser’s financial

recklessness the family was forcedto move 17 times in 19 years and areagain looking for accommodation.

In a recent documentary Kaileeproduced for thewebsite, she quoteswhat she calls “The Famous Lines”of the abuser. “I do what I want,when I want and no one can stopme!” is one of the threats throwntheir way over the years.

“Nobody can imagine the hurtand pain we’ve suffered. This is thefirst time that we have spoken outand it feels good,” she says.

In the meantime, the siblings ob-tained an interdict against theirabuser, but still question the sy-stem.

or level of working trials, the Tracker Dog

III level. The trial involves anumber of secti-ons which all have to be passed in order forthe dog to qualify for a certificate.The first section involves the dog followi-

ing the track of a person who has walkedthrough a field three hours earlier and drop-ped three articles on the track. After threehours the dog, followed by the handler on along line, must follow the track and find andindicate all three articles. There are up to11 corners on the track.The next section takes place in an area of

rough ground or ground covered with trees,in which an article is hidden. The dog mustcheck every quarter of the area and find thearticle and either bark or indicate to thehandler where it is hidden.The third section consists of the dog fin-

ding four small articles – each about the sizeof a matchbox - in four minutes after theyhave been hidden in another area of roughgrassland. The articles would have beenheld and scented by the judge for one minu-te.There is also a send-away and redirection

section in which the dog must run out 50 mto a visible object. It could be a log, a bushor something similar. The dog must stopwhen commanded and then, when redirec-ted by the handler, must run either to theright or the left for another 20 m and stopwhen commanded.The dog must also do a 10 minute down-

stay with the handler completely out ofsight, then a section of heelwork, where itmust stay close to the handler even if thehandler changes pace orwalks close to otherpeople, dogs or cars. Die vloek van Kupfertal het ’n inwonervan Durbanville behoorlik beet.

Wynand Theron (67), ’n gebore Vry-stater, het reeds 34vandie 44boekeversamelwat Doc Immelman in sy lewe geskryf het.Maar, Die vloek van Kupfertal en nog negeander boeke, ontwyk hom.

Theron se belangstelling in dié bekendeNamibiese skrywer, wat verlede jaar op 9Maart inWindhoek oorlede is, het in 1975 be-gin toe sy nefies vir hom die boek Vallei vandie heilige vure as Kersgeskenk gegee het.Dié boek is tot vandag toe sy gunsteling.

“Ek was nog altyd lief vir Namibië en diefeit dat al Doc se romans in dié land afspeel,het natuurlik in my kraal gepas. Niemandkon oor Namibië skryf soos hy nie!”

Self was Theron egter net een keer in Na-mibië – in 1967 vir drie weke as weermagsol-daat vir opleiding op Grootfontein.

Theronwas 28 toe hy sy eerste Doc Immel-man-boek ontvang het, maar dit was eers indie 90’s dat hy aktief beginhet omDoc se boe-ke te versamel.

“Ek het gou besef dat dit nogal skaarsitems is. Nie net omdat hy ’n gewilde skry-wer was nie, maar ook omdat die oplae vandie meeste van sy boeke maar laag was –meestal minder as 5 000.”

Uit nood het hy Doc in 2003 ’n paar keerinWindhoek gebel enmet homgekorrespon-deer. “Hywas so gaaf om virmy ’n hele paarvan sy boeke, waarvan hy ses ondertekenhet, per vliegtuig saam met sy vrou, Rya,Kaap toe te stuur.”

Hoewel hy hom nooit persoonlik ontmoethet nie, is die brief wat Doc in Mei 2003 aanhom geskryf het, en koerantartikels wat oordie jare oorDoc verskynhet, vir Theron kos-baar en het dit ’n bêreplek in ’n spesiale lêergekry.

“Syboeke is so gewild dat daar in later jareherdrukke gepubliseer is,maarhulle het nie

dieselfde ‘karakter’ as die oorspronklikesnie,” meen hy.

“Doc was ’n regte platjie met ’n oog vir ’nmooi nooi. Al sy boeke het dan ook so ’n lek-ker romantiese streep deur hulle,” vertel hy.

“Ek is baie gelukkig om 34 van Doc se boe-ke opmyboekrak te hê.Van sy boeke is egterbitter skaars, veral Die vloek van Kupfertal,waarvan die oplaag maar net 2 000 in 1978was. Doc se dogter, Yvette Muldoon, het virmy gesê sy soek self ook daardie boek met’n seer hart!”

Ander vloekHoewel Die vloek van Kupfertal hom bly

ontwyk, het Theron ’n ander “vloek” oorwin– dié van depressie. Toe hy in 2002 as seniorbestuurder van die pensioen-administrasie-afdeling bySanlam, afgetreehet, het reaktie-we depressie toegeslaan. “Dit het gevoel ofek in ’n leë gat instap en moes my lewe vanvooraf opbou.”

Hy het vyf jaar klank aan depressie gelyvoor hy eindelik ná terapie daarin kon slaagom te herfokus en herbesin oor sy lewe.

Hy het in daardie jaar betrokke geraak bydie depressie- en angsgroep, waarvan hy dieafgelope ses jaar die voorsitter is. Hy is ookdie afgelope sowat 30 jaar die voorsitter vandie Onze Molen-huiseienaarsvereniging,waar hy die kampvegter is vir die inwonersse regte en hom beywer het vir die opknapvan die historiese meul.

Self ’n skrywerHy is ook ’nkranige skrywer.Hyhet onder

meer navorsing gedoen oor die Laingsburg-vloedramp en ’n Power Point-aanbiedingdaaroor saamgestel, wat tans in die Laings-burg-museum en op die webblad van dieLaingsburg-vloedramp vertoon word.

Hy het in die 1990’s ’n boek, Trippense indie Theron-familietrommel, oor sy familiege-skiedenis geskryf. Al die Therons in Suid-Afrika is afstammelinge van die Franse hu-genoot, Jacques Theron. “Ek is ook familie

van die beroemde Hollywood-aktrise, Char-lize Theron,” skerts hy.

Hy stel ook belang in ou kerkgeboue. Hysal spesiaal van die grootpad afdraai om naklein dorpies se kerkgebou te gaan kyk enfoto’s daarvan te neem. Dié op Graaff-Reinetis die mooiste, meen hy.

En dan is daar sy belangstelling in Nasase ruimteprogram…

Indrukwekkend vir ’n man wat eintlik ’nB.Com-graad behaal het – destyds deeltydsgestudeer het aan die buitemuurse fakulteitvan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch, van-dag die US-bestuurskool.

Hyhetmet grootmoeite dié koevert deur die lei-ers vandie vier grootste politieke partye vandaardie tyd laat onderteken, naamlik PWBotha (NP), AP Treurnicht (KP), Van ZylSlabbert (PFP – Progressiewe Federale Par-ty) en WA Sutton (Nuwe Republieke Party).

With most golfers vying for Ti-ger Woods’ number one spot, ayoung golfer is already follo-wing in the footsteps of TrevorImmelman on the junior golfscene.

Tristan Galant (12) from Bel-har is no stranger to winningand at his young age has justemulated the senior SAgolfer bybecoming one of only a handfulof junior golfers to tame the FishRiver course thrice in the juniorranks.

His latest achievement cameduring the last month when hesuccessfully defended his title atthe Fish River Challenge and heis in line to defend his nationaltitle in Johannesburg later thisyear.

Dad Martin, who is his coachand also heads up coaching forWP development, explained thatat the prizegiving they were toldthat Immelman was the last ju-nior golfer to come out tops atthe course three times in a row.

“As an 11-year-old Tristanfirst played the challenge for un-der-13’s in 2013 and won that,”he said.

“Later that year he was thereagain for the SA Championships and nowhe has done it again.

“It was tough for him this year, sharingthe lead on the first day but then coming inunder pressure to eventually win by threestrokes.”

With preparations and practice for defen-dinghis SA title later this year going strong,further exciting news is that the young golf-er has been invited to take part in a tourna-ment in Scotland next month.

“This is very exciting news for him to ta-ke part in a World Series Golf tournamentfor juniors but we are still looking for somefinancial help or sponsorship to get him the-re,” continued Martin.

“I’ve never pushed or forced Tristan intothe game, but I see how much he has grownto love it and enjoy playing so I want to givehim as much encouragement and motivati-on for him to succeed.

“Part of that is playing as many tourna-ments here in South Africa as possible butthe real test is getting him out to all the ma-jor junior events across the world.

“This has been a testing ground for all themajor professionals and as a junior he willget the chance to understand what it’s liketo take to the world stage with his abilities.”

This week was still a busy week for the

young golfer who is in Grade 7 at Erica Pri-mary in Belhar, as he was playing in the Un-der-13 Championships at Bellville.

“The competition was tough at Fish Riverthis year,” he says.

“For me the best part is the support of myfamily, their encouragement at all timesand most importantly, I love the game.”

Martin also wants to grow the sport in hiscommunity but needs help to keep youngs-ters in the sport.

“I am trying my best at the moment,” hesays.

“Unfortunately golf is not a cheap sportand I need help to keep youngsters here on-ce they get playing.

“There are already a few that I amhelpingbut feel that with more support I could getmore youth interested.

“Its not just about the sport but about get-ting them to realise their capabilities andpotential in life. For golf on the whole itcould also mean a lot because overseas theyhave so many good professionals risingthrough the rank of good foundation pro-grammes.

van 2 April oor die jongste verhogings intariewe verslag gedoen (“Rate hike in linewith consumer inflation”), en lesers inge-lig oor wat om te verwag.

Hiervolgens is die Stad se kapitale be-groting van R6 miljard, en operasionelebegroting van R27,8 miljard reeds opMaandag 24 Maart aan raadslede voorgelêvir kommentaar teen Maandag 7 April.

“Die finale begroting sal aan die eindevan Mei goedgekeur word, met ingang op1 Julie,” het hy gesê.

Van der Merwe sê van die tien stadsde-partemente sal “elk insette lewer oor wathulle nodig het in die begroting”.

Hy sê daar is R700 000 afgestaan aan elkvan die 110 wyke vir wyksprojekte, watbyvoorbeeld insluit spoedkalmering,straatligte en om sportvelde op te knap.

“Saam met die begroting gaan ook tarie-we en beleide. Een van dié beleide is diesogenaamde ‘deernisbeleid’. Hiervolgenskry behoeftiges ‘afslag’ van die Stad,” hethy gesê.

“Sodra die konsepbegroting goedge-keur is, sal daar gekyk word na hoe diebeleid aangepas is om hulpbehoewendeste help,” het hy gesê.

Hy noem ook dat daar weer gekyk is nahoe faktore soos bevolkingsgroei en van-dalisme byvoorbeeld die stadskoffers ge-raak het.

“Dís alles faktore wat die Stad geld kos,en enige mens kan die somme doen,” hethy gesê.

Volgens dié 2014/2015-voorgestelde be-groting is die groeikoers per stadsdiens ef-fens minder as die vorige boekjaar s’n,maar steeds in ooreenstemming met infla-siegroei.

Hy sê belasting is verhoog met 6 %(teenoor 6,10 % in 2013), elektrisiteit met7,6 % (teenoor 7,86 % in 2013), water en sa-nitasie met 8 % (teenoor 9,53 % in 2013) envaste afval met 5,9 %.

Dis die vraagwat die plaaslike sanger, Lu-kas de Beer, en die vervaardiger, HelmutMeijer, gevra het toe hulle aan Lukas se de-buut- album begin werk het.Alhoewel hy al baie liedjies vir ander kun-

stenaars geskryf het, het hy eers onlangs syeie album, Storm op Jupiter, bekend gestel.“Dis ietswat al komvanmykinderdae af,”

sê Lukas van symusiek. Hy was elf of twaalftoe hy al in sy eerste orkes gespeel het.Lukas sê dat daar ’n klomp dinge in sy le-

we is wat saamgekom het, sodat hy die stapkon neem om sy eie musiek op te neem. Hyhet al baie van die materiaal op die albumklaar geskryf en hy’t homself afgevra:“Waarvoor wag ek?”.“Dis nie asof ’n ou jonger word nie en dis

nie asof die tyd meer raak nie,” spot hy.Toe Lukas en Helmut besluit het om die

album op te neem, was hul kriteria dat hullemusiek wou maak wat vir hulle mooi is, on-geag of dit op die radio gespeel sou word. Al-bei hou van die 80’s, asook rock-musiek, enLukas sê dat hulle ’n bietjie van ’n soft rock-benadering gehad het.

MusikaliteitToe Lukas en Helmut ontmoet het om oor

die album te gesels, wasHelmut toevallig dievorige aand by ’n Mike and the Mechanics-vertoning en die twee het besluit om te sienof hulle nie iets van die musikaliteit vandaardie era kan vasvang nie.Lukas was bietjie bekommerd dat die al-

bum te divers is, maar hy sê dieselfde skry-wer, musikante en vervaardiger maak datdie tien liedjies opdie oueinde togbymekaarpas.Hy sê die inspirasie vir sy liedjies komvan

bei sy ouers is ook musikante. Sy pa het ki-taar gespeel en syma het gesing en hulle het’n orkes gehad toe Lukas klein was. “Ek ont-hou ons het altyd in die huis musiek gehad,altyd.”Hy was net vyf jaar oud toe hy sy eerste

kitaar gekry het en op ses begin lesse kryhet, maar toe hy sy baskitaar gekry het, washy verlief. Dis nou rondom dié tyd dat hy syeerste orkes begin het. “Dit was vet pret,”sê hy.Wanneer hy nie sy eie musiek speel nie,

speel hy ander kunstenaars semusiek op dieradio as ontbytomroeper by Radio KaapseKansel. “Vir ’n musikant is dit ’n uitdagingom so vroeg wakker te word.”

MeestersHy is ook besig met sy meestersgraad in

bestuursafrigting en hy fokus spesifiek opmense in die kreatiewe bedryf.Hy het ook drie kinders wat hom besig

hou, terwyl sy vrou ’n dokter by ’n noodeen-heid is. Sy plan is vir eers om vir die volgen-de tydjie Storm op Jupiter in die land te be-mark. An addition to the 2014 World TriathlonSeries calendar was in November an-nounced by the International Triath-

lon Union (ITU).For the first time ever, a World Triathlon

Series event will take place on the Africancontinent with a race slated to be held at theV&A Waterfront in Cape Town from 26 to 27April.

The World Triathlon Cape Town race willserve as the second stop on the eight-citytour which starts in Auckland from 5 to 6April.

Cape Town is one of only two cities to de-but on the WTS calendar in 2014, with Chica-go also hosting an event for the first time.

The world’s top triathletes have confir-med their participation in theCapeTown legof the series. With eight of the top ten elitemen on the start list, spectators can expecta tight, action packed race. Local hero Ri-chard Murray (ranked 5th) will take on Ma-rio Mola (ESP), who narrowly beat him by18 seconds in the World Cup season openerin Mooloolaba last month, as well as fellowSpaniard Javier Gomez who is number oneon the WTS rankings. With 15 and sevenWorld Series wins under their respectivebelts, Brownlee brothers Alistair and Jona-than are the most successful elite athletes inthe history of the series and will be lookingto retain their position.

Ladies hold their ownThe elite ladies race will certainly rival

the men’s in terms of action. With the topthree ladies on the WTS rankings, JodieStimpson (GBR), Non Stanford (GBR) andAnne Haug (GER) confirmed, the competiti-onwill beno less intense than the elitemen’srace. Olympic silver medallist Lisa Norden(SWE) will also be making her ITU World Se-ries comeback in Cape Town after the 2012Olympics. Along with Helen Jenkins (GBR),she’ll be looking to regain her former ITUWorld Triathlon Series glory.

Says Richard Murray: “To compete infront of my home crowd in an ITU World Se-ries event is already special. To know thatI amgoing to be racing against the best athle-tes in theworld is going tomake for anunfor-gettable experience and epic race.

“This event will give South Africans theopportunity to watch or take part in a pro-am event, which caters to both elite andmass participation. It’s incredibly impor-tant in terms of growing the sport locally.Having Discovery as title sponsor and Vir-gin Active as a partner - both large compa-

nies with a focus on promoting healthy li-ving - will also go a long way to raise the pro-file of triathlon amongst ordinary weekendwarriors and the public.”

Age groupers will have the option to choo-se between a standard Olympic distancecourse or hone their speed skills on a sprintcourse. Standard and sprint distance teamrelays are also on the schedule, offering a ra-ce for all abilities.

In addition to the competitions, athleteswill be treated to a weekend full of festivitiesincluding sundownconcerts, a race exhibiti-on, kids and family races.

Die Kaapstad-meesters-swemspan hettweede geeïndig in die 30ste Suid-Afri-kaanse meesters-swembyeenkoms,

wat onlangs in Bloemfontein gehou is.Altesaam 401 swemmers van oor die hele

land het aan die kampioenskapsbyeenkomsdeelgeneem.

Meesters-swem maak voorsiening virswemmers in alle ouderdomsgroepe van 19jaar en ouer. Die ouderdomme word in vyf-jaargroepe opgedeel. Alle afstande en swem-dissiplines word ingesluit.

Die plaaslike spanne was die Kaapstad-meesters met 45 swemmers, Kaapse Dol-phinsmet twaalf enWynlande-meestersmetnege.

Die Kaapstad-meesters het ook die voor-geetrofee, wat toegeken word aan die klubmet diemeeste punte per swemmerwat deel-geneem het, gewen.

Miems Swanpoel (79) is die oudste lid vandie klubwat aan die byeenkoms deelgeneem

het en het twee goue en twee bronsmedaljesverower.

Sanderina Kruger (65) het uitstekend ge-swem en drie wêreldrekords laat spat. In die50 m-vryslag het sy die wêreldrekord ge-breek in ’n tydvan31:40 sek. Indie 100m-vry-slag het sy ’n spogtyd van 1:09.63 behaal entoe indie 200 m-vryslagmet ’n tydvan 2:39:00gewen. Hierdie rekords moet nog amptelikdeurFINAerkenword. In totaal het Sanderi-na nege goue medaljes gewen en is beloonmet die byeenkoms se victrix ludorum-tro-fee.

Die 15de FINA-wêreld-meesters-swemby-eenkoms vind van 27 Julie tot 10 Augustusin Montreal, Kanada plaas. Sanderina Kru-ger en Rod Holshausen gaan hieraan deel-neem.

Die volgende meesters-gala – aangebieddeur Westelike Provinsie-meestersswem –word op 10 April vanaf 18:30 by die Lang-straat-swembad, Kaapstad gehou.

The Fairmont first cricket team had a record breaking season despite the odd hiccup ortwo. For the first time in the school’s history, they made it to the Sammy Bloch/DurbellPharmacy knockout final. They comfortably defeated Durbanville HS on the way to liftingthe trophy. Furthermore, the team boasts a record of 10 wins and just three losses. This isa season best performance in the school’s history. Over 120 surfers representing six provincescompeted at the 22nd editionof theBillabongSouth African Grommet Games at PollockBeach in Port Elizabeth recently.

This annual SA Grommet Games is nowaprestigious event on theSouthAfrican sur-fing calendar, with 15 proud Bolanders re-presenting the province.

Andre Roos, the youngest surfer in the Bo-land team,won secondplace in theu-8 divisi-on. Lisa van Rensburg won second place inthe u-10 mixed division. Kealla Pratt camefourth in the girls u-12 division, with DeclanFiet (fromMelkbos) andKira Bestermakingit through to the semi-finals in their respec-tive age groups.

KiraBesterwon thepaddle battle event forgirls while Elrico Ludick (from Table View)came second in the senior boys beach flagsevent.

Team Trophy, while Western Province tookhome the Mandela Bay Trophy for the teamwith the highest points in total.

The Grommet Games is a transformationand development tournament that gives yo-ung surfers from around the country theirfirst opportunity to compete for their respec-tive provinces in a major surfing contest.

Girls and boys from a variety of differentcultures and communities represented ineight divisions, travel from all parts of theSouth African coast. While much of the fo-cus is on surfing itself, events suchas apadd-le battle, beach flags and a tag team surfingcompetition add to the activities that makethis event so special each year.

In order to be selected for an appropriateteam for this event, provinces have held aseries of trials in their respective provincialareas. The trials for the Boland grommetsurf team were held in Strand and Melkbos-strand.
