Parents of the children that will start atthe brand new Sunningdale Primarynext year can rest assured that this

newschool is set ongiving its pupils theverybest.The keys to the school were officially

handed over to its new principal Estelle deWit last week Wednesday.“Estelle comes with quite a track record

of excellence and we have the fullest confi-dence that she will be able to do what is nec-essary to make the school a success,” saida member of the interim School GoverningBody (SGB) Jonathan Bisschoff, as he intro-duced De Wit to the rest of the personnel.

The school will open its doors along withother schools in theWestern Cape on 16 Jan-uary and thanks to the hard work of a verycommitted SGB much of what is needed forthe new year, has been put into place.The school will cater for pupils from

Grade R to Grade 3.

Fully furnished“The school is full except for a handful of

openings. We have some 240 children en-rolled for next year, which make up twoGrade R classes, three Grade 1 classes, oneGrade 2 class and one Grade 3 class,” saidchairman of the SGB, Steve Hollesen.Apart from theprincipal the staff compris-

es seven teachers and a groundsman.

In the last six weeks members of the SGBhavewith the guidance of the interimprinci-palHenniePatience seen tomost of the logis-tical needs that would allow De Wit to walkinto a fully functioning school.“We have furnished all the classrooms

with desks, we have set up a bank accountfor school fees, we are in the process of set-ting up a website and Facebook page, wehave secured a donation of R20 000 for toysfor the Grade R classes, have registered foraMySchool card and have applied to the cityfor a speed bump and zebra stripes for theroad,” Hollesen said in reference to some oftheir hard work.“I amsohumbledand thankful for thismo-

ment. This is an R-letter day, that is why I

amwearing red today,” an emotional DeWitsaid. She expressed her gratitude for thework done by the SGB in recent weeks.

Strong foundation“I want to thank you for the opening

prayer thismorning.When I heard it, I knewthis school’s foundations were strong. Mybiggest dream is to make this a place wherechildren will know who and what God is,”she said.“There is a huge task ahead of us but if we

A faulty safety valve cause consternation atthe Igloo Ice plant in Montague Gardens onMonday when ammonia was released intothe atmosphere.Some 20 workers were “slightly” over-

come by the fumes, so the plantwas evacuat-ed while Fire and Rescue Services and theCity of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Manage-ment Centre carried out their inspection.This is the second incident in eight days

in the vicinitywhere people had to be evacu-ated due to some sort of leak.Last week Saturday 500 traders and pa-

trons in Paarden Island had to be evacuatedafter a Chevron oil refinery pipe leaked aharmful substance.Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, the head for

Systems Integration, Special Projects andDisaster Operations from the Disaster RiskManagement Centre says these incidentswere probably caused by lack of the propermaintenance, but he emphasises that theycannot be certain until they receive the re-ports from the companies involved.He elaborates on Monday’s incident: “At

13:53 the city was informed of an emergencyincident where ammonia was released intothe atmosphere in theMontagueGardens In-dustrial area. Upon arrival the workers atthe Igloo Ice plant that is situated on the cor-ner of First and Sixth streets were evacuat-ed. As a result of the uncontrolled ammoniaemission at the facility 20 peoplewere slight-ly overcome by the fumes.”Both he and the plant management say

that it “wasn’t significant and didn’t severe-ly affect the atmosphere”.At room temperature, ammonia is a col-

ourless, highly irritating gas with a pun-gent, suffocating odour.Solomons-Johannes adds that some of the

workers were nauseous when they inhaled

the gas, but everyone has since recovered.Exposure to high concentrations of ammo-

nia in the air causes immediate burning ofthe nose, throat and respiratory tract.He continues: “The emergency officials

cordoned off the immediate precinct in theinterest of public safety and thenourperson-nel made the area safe and handed it overto the management of the plant.”According to the plant supervisor on duty

the cause of the uncontrolled release of theammonia was a faulty safety release valve.Now the relevant authorities will investi-

gate the incident in terms of the provisionsof Section 30 of the National EnvironmentalManagement Act.Solomons-Johannes says Igloo Ice plant

and the Chevron oil refinery are required toprovide a detailed report regarding the inci-dent; to undertake reasonable measures toprevent such pollution or degradation of theenvironment; to minimise and rectify thepollution to the environment; and to takeany steps as required to minimise the effectof the incident on public health and the envi-ronment to the relevant organs of state.

Emergency staff probe ammonia leak

Beat that: The famous duo of Milnerton Canoe Club, bubbly TV anchor and radiopresenter, Liezel van der Westhuizen, and paddling partner, Greg van Heerden, will team upfor the second consecutive year in the colours of The Unlimited for one of Africa’s big fiveevents – the Unlimited Dusi Canoe Marathon in February next year. The two paddlingpartners only teamed up nine weeks ahead of the 2012 race, but with one successful racein the bag and a couple of months to train together, they are convinced that they willbetter their finish time of 13 hours 22 minutes. They are currently using various conventionaland unconventional training methods to get the edge over their opponents.

ber 2005 het ’n veldbrand by Grootbaai uit-gebreek. “Ons het ’n linie om die AtlanticBeach-gholflandgoed gevorm om die brandte keer. Die brand is om omstreeks twaalf-uur daardie aand geblus.“Die volgende oggend het ons met ’n 4x4

Ek gaan nou slaap, maar ek losmyhuis oop sodat julle van die toilet kan ge-bruik maak. ’n Ander vrou in Kloofnek hetmet ’n bak varsgebakte muffins uitgekomen gesê daar is nog op pad.”As ’n bekwaamde werkswinkelbestuur-

Beware glass: The Blouberg BeachCleanup group of volunteers had its lastcleanup operation for the year on 1 December. “We would like to thank everyone whocame out. We had a huge amount ofbroken glass that was picked up off thebeach,” said organiser Gregory Player. Playersaid they have decided that as of next yearwherever possible to have a beach cleanupon the first Saturday of every month.Volunteers meet in front of the KFC andSeli 1 at 10:00. “Should there be anystretches of beach that are in need of someTLC, people can come and collect bags andgloves from us. this year recorded the track “I will be yourvoice” to create awareness of this growingproblem and to help raise funds for variousprojects.“My daughter, Shanna (15) sings the song

with me as a duet and my son, Schalk (19),played piano and guitar on the track. Agroup of four men, Heavenly Quartez fromKhayelitsha perform the chorus parts withus in Xhosa,” Rozanne explains.“This song comes as a plea and an ode to

the rhino and all endangered wildlife and apromise that we’ll try our best to be the voic-es for those who do not have a voice.”This track can now be downloaded via

cellphonewith the funds going towards anti-poaching operations.Rozanne’s “I will be your voice” project al-

so includes the hosting of fundraisingevents.The first event which took the form of a

ers and cooldrinks.Then it was time for the highlight of the

day – Father Christmas’s arrival on a fireengine with flashing lights and all.Each child received a toy and a gift box

filled with sweets, a toothbrush and tooth-paste, and stationery.Judging by the grinning smiles it was a

Father Christmas was definitely the biggest attraction at the children’s Christmas party thatthe Rotary Club of Blouberg recently held for underprivileged children in Rugby.

During the last festive season, 170 incidentswere recorded where children were sepa-rated from their parents or guardians atswimming pools, beaches and other recrea-tional areas.

To address this problem the City of CapeTown launched the IdentiKidz programmeon Saturday.

The programme sees the use of wrist-bands that will be tagged on the arms ofchildren for easy identification.

The product that will be used is a plastic-type wristband up to 25 cm that is strong yetlightweight (tough, long-wearing and dura-ble). The wristband is also waterproof witha secure snap-lock for single use that is nottransferable and that can be identified at adistance. It features a unique identifier inthe form of a serial number.

The details of the children will be loggedon a register by officials so that, should achild get lost, immediate contact can bemade to reunite them with their parents orguardians.

A total of 150 officials will be patrollingall 72 of the city’s beaches promoting theproject among parents and guardians.

These officials will be identified by theirCity of Cape Town uniforms.

When issuedwith an armband, the child’sand parent/guardian’s details will be takendown and registered with the Disaster Man-agement Centre.

“We hope to have a barcode system forthis project in place by Easter next year sothat the info can be captured electronicallyinstead of by hand,” said Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, from the Disaster Risk Manage-ment Centre.

He said the most missing children wererecorded at Muizenberg last year with 63going missing on Boxing Day alone.

Snap safety band on your kid

City officials will be distributing thesecolourful wrist bands as part of the IdentiKidzprogramme aimed at making it easier to findchildren who go missing at beaches andpublic swimming pools.

In the first nine days ofDecember, 59 peoplehave already been killed on Western Caperoads.

This far exceeds last year’s death-toll andis theworst fatalities theprovincehas expe-rienced in three years, according to Minis-ter of Transport and Public Works for theWestern Cape, Robin Carlisle.

“Accordingly, I welcome the new andvery far reaching measures to counterdrunken driving recently announced bythe National Prosecuting Authorities,” hesaid in a media statement last week.

Thesemeasuresmean that drunk driverswho manage to avoid blood testing may,nevertheless, still be sentenced to long jailterms as the state would no longer have to

rely only on blood tests for convictions.“In addition, I have decided to call on all

law enforcement agencies to pull over se-dans and trucks, in addition to taxis andbuses, for the purpose of assessing whetheror not the drivers are fatigued, as well asfor the carrying out of other safety checks,”he said.

In terms of the National Road Traffic Act,a traffic officer may take away the keys ofa fatigued driver and forbid him to drive forat least four hours. Such a driver, who inthe opinion of a traffic officer, is fatigued,will be asked to park in a safe area and theirkeys will be taken for four hours. “A fa-tigued driver is just as dangerous as adrunken driver,” he said.

command of Colonel Jauari the StationCommissioner of Lansdowne police andmy team from the Ottery Baptist Churchvisited the community of Flamingo Parkinformal settlement in Lansdowne.At the settlement opening prayers were

conducted and prayers were said for thesick. Two old favourite choruses weresung; “Die liefde van Jesus is wonder-baar” and “Fishing for Jesus”.Januari was accompanied by Leuite-

nant Ntubula the operational commanderand Constanble Nyacka the communicati-on official. A prayer was said by Januariand I could see she was a commanderwho has the interest of her community atheart. Cowboy stew, soup and butteredbread was served to the children andafterwards they received packets of chipsand sweets. This goodwill visit was just ahuman loving gesture to show that wecare and have the poorest of the poorinterest at heart. This goodwill exerciseis also an example that should encourageothers that have, to share or contributeto those less fortunate.

Scores of people headed to the Inter-care Parow Asthma Clinic on Fri-day where an asthma awarenessdrive was held.

Among the people was Ryk Neeth-ling, SA Olympic gold-medallistswimmer and asthma-sufferer, whounderwent a series of asthma as-

sessments. It was also done in sup-port of the Cipla Medpro BreatheFree Asthma awareness initiative.

According to reports, the WesternCape has the highest asthma deathrate in the world.

As such, the Cipla MedproBreathe Free asthma awareness

and education campaign aims toprovide nationwide access to asth-ma medicine and information forboth healthcare practitioners andthe general public.

Bus fares go up just before the year endsThe announcement of an average 5,5 %hike in bus fares is expected to leave a bit-ter taste in the mouth of commuters.

The price hike comes into effect on Mon-day 30 December, Golden Arrow has an-nounced.

The public transport service providersays “soaring fuel costs” are a contributingfactor, adding the increase has “only beenconsidered after all other cost absorptionmeasures have been explored and exhaust-

ed”.Golden Arrow general manager FE Mey-

er says in a statement: “Over the last 12months the diesel price has increased by14 %, while nationally determined wagesescalated by 8,5 %. These two cost itemsconstitute about 74 % of Golden Arrow’s to-tal costs. This is further compounded bythe cumulative shortfall in funds from theDivision of Revenue Act (DORA) subsidyallocation, which has not been in line with

the contracted escalation rate.”In spite of the challenges, Golden Arrow

has continued its recapitalisation pro-gramme. In the last year 120 MAN HB2 and10 Volvo BR7 buses have been added to thefleet at a cost of about R182 m.

“A decision to increase bus fares is nevertaken lightly or without careful considera-tion, but in this case it is simply unavoida-ble.

“We have, however, endeavoured to min-

imise the impact on our passengers bykeeping the increase as low as possible andby excluding pensioner fares and most off-peak fares.”

Passengers can postpone paying the in-creased fares until 13 January 2013 in thecase of 10-ride clipcards (which are validfor 14 days) bought on Sunday 30 Decemberand until 5 February 2013 in the case ofmonthly clipcards (valid for 37 days)bought on the same date.

Daar is nie vreeslik baie plek in sy voor-tuin nie, maar daar is genoeg vir komkom-mers, radyse, pampoene, aartappels, grana-te, skorsies, tamaties, vye, papajas en grena-dellas.

Paul kan nie eens onthou wanneer hy laasgroente in ’n winkel gaan koop het nie!

Volgens hom spandeer hy minder as ’nuur ’n week in sy geliefde tuin. Daar is ’ntuinslang aangelê om te sorg vir daagliksebesproeiing en elke nou en dan sorg Paul net

dat daar genoeg kompos is om die grondvrugbaar te hou.

Hy was in sy jonger dae ’n skaapboer. Só,oom met sy hande te werk is nie nuut vir Paulnie, maar hy dring aan dat ’n groentetuin nieeintlik “werk” is nie.

“Dis eintlik ’n stokperdjie van my,” sê hystadig in sy diep stem.

Dis ook duidelik dat hy oorloop van trotsas mens kyk na sy sprankelende oë, wat hybeskryf as ’n familie-kenmerk.

“Ek het eenkeer ’n ui uitgehaal wat een ki-logram geweeg het!”

Die grond was eens op ’n tyd taamlik on-vrugbaar, maar te danke aan die kompos enerdwurms is dit nou ’n paradys vir ’n grootverskeidenheid sade, sê Paul.

“Hier was ’n paar bome toe ons ingetrekhet, maar ek het dit uitgehaal en beginplant.”

Hy stap deur die tuin en vertel ’n storieoor byna elke plant.

“Hierdie skorsie rank, ek het die anderdag 12 skorsies hier afgehaal! Hierdie vye-boom was 30 cm hoog toe ek dit vanjaar ge-plant het. Dis nou een en ’n halwe meter!Daar staan my wingerdstok...daai is koolbla-re wat ek gebruik vir kompos. Hier is die gre-nadellas. Dis ’n heining. Ek het dit verledejaar geplant en kyk hoe lyk dit nou!”

Die grenadella-heining hou duidelik vanPaul se keuse van kunsmis, want dit groeibaie goed.

“Jy gooi kompos op die grond en dan losjy dit net vir so twee weke. Dan broei die erd-wurms op hul eie uit. Hulle verwerk diegrond en maak dit ryk. Jy hoef nie eers tespit nie. Al wat ek doen, is om die grassiesuit te haal,” sê hy.

Toe TygerBurger sy tuin en sy trots ver-laat, toe staan hy nog in die middel van sytuin en bewonder dit, asof hy dit vir die eer-ste keer gesien het.

Dit is voorwaar iets om te beleef.

Skorsies is gewoonlik net groot genoeg omso paar skeppe spinasie in weg te steek, so-dat ma’s nie kan sien jy het dit nie geëet nie.

’n Skorsie wat egter onlangs gepluk is inGoodwood, is elke spinasiehater se droom.’n Hele bord spinasie kan daaronder wegge-steek word!

Oupa Willem en ouma Lorraine Swart setuin het ’n 2,2 kg-monsterskorsie opgelewer.

En dit was alles te danke aan hul kleindog-ter, Lizanie Zaayman (5).

Sy het ongeveer ’n jaar en ’n half gelede’n paar skorsiesade opgetel in die tuin en ditvir haar oupa gegee.

Hy het dit in die yskas gesit en bietjie ver-

geet daarvan, maar ’n jaar later het hy be-sluit dis nou tyd om die sade te plant.

Die groot skorsie het ’n paar maande latersy kop uitgesteek. Dit voel eintlik verkeerdom dié ou grote ’n skorsie te noem. Die ver-kleining pas nie by die spesifieke groente-soort nie.

Miskien is die naam “skors” in dié gevalmeer gepas.

Lorraine het dadelik vir TygerBurger ge-bel en beskryf wat sy in haar hande hou.

Dit het dadelik die koerant na die internetlaat haas om uit te vind of dit een of anderrekord is, en tot almal se verbasing weeg dieswaarste skorsie ’n allemintige 57 kg.

Miskien moes Lizanie se skorsiesade nog’n paar jaar in die yskas gebly het.

Die organisasie Matla a Bana, onder leidingvan Monique Strydom as uitvoerende hoofen bestuurder, het onlangs aan werknemersvan Die Burger, Son en Media24 gewys hoelyk die voltooide sentrum, wat by Wesfleur-hospitaal, Atlantis, in gebruik geneem salword.

Die hoofdoel hiervan is die behandelingvan slagoffers van kinderverkragting.

Die sentrum is stylvol en doelmatig inge-rig binne die skeepsvraghouer, wat deurSon, in samewerking met die Ou Mutual-stigting, geskenk is.

Die spreekkamer wat voorheen vir hier-die doel gebruik is, is baie klein en slagoffersmoes dikwels hul privaatheid prysgee, om-dat hulle, vergesel deur ‘n polisiebeampte,deur die hospitaal moes loop. Dit was vir

baie slagoffers ‘n traumatiese en vernede-rende ervaring. Die nuwe vertrek is buitedie hospitaal en geen slagoffer se identiteithoef ooit bekend gemaak te word nie.

Horatius Hart, voorsitter van die hospi-taalraad, het dit beaam en gesê die nuwe ver-trek skep ’n meer menslike atmosfeer.

Volgens Strydom is die meeste slagoffersvan verkragting meisies. Volgens ’n bronvan Atlantis word verkragting van seuns eg-ter die meeste aangemeld. Verkragters issoms so jonk as 12 jaar oud is. Hierdie seunsstaan die gevaar om later reeksverkragterste word.

There was a definite festive cheer to the lastrace of the Primi Naish Downwind Dash Se-ries held last week.Being the final race of the year with only

a week and a half to go to Christmas the or-ganisers incorporated aCode-Reddress codewhich saw stand up paddlers with somegreat outfits take to the surf.As Chris Bertish (men open), Brigette van

Aswegen (women) and Ethan Koopmans(junior) have already wrapped up their divi-sions it was down to the fight for lesser plac-ingswhich became the focus of the race fromMilnerton to Bloubergstrand.The swell was pulsing with some four to

five foot sets making the paddle out a littletesting. Once out the back it was clear thatthis was going to be a long tough race. Verylight winds (for Cape Town) of 11 to 17 knotscreated runners, but the paddlers had towork for them.Greg Bertish had taken second overall

from Dylan Frick last week and he just hadto stay ahead of Dylan tomaintain this over-all position. Dylan however had other plansand put on a masterclass of lightwind down-wind riding getting themost out of the smallrunners on offer. His time was only 20 sec-onds slower than theweek beforewhichwasheld in proper 20 to 30 knots. The rest of thetop 10 field dropped four to six minutes offtheir time due to the light winds. Greg triedto hang on, but had to settle for second posi-tion, over two minutes behind. Third spotwent to Colin Heckroodt.Chris had to settle for fourth after getting

stuck mid-break at the start and then decid-ing to go around the rocks at Big Bay whilethe rest of the lead bunch braved the SmallBay gauntlet.Brigette van Aswegen made it nine out of

10 and although Mieshka Steyn and MonikaWohlgemuth have improved all year, Bri-gette has clearly established herself as theundisputed champof SAdownwinding. This

time round Tammy Robarts found someform to take second while Monika managedto take third, ahead of Mishka.In the juniorsEthanKoopmansonceagain

cleaned up while Kimon Dos Santos made a

welcome return to take second with firsttimer Dylan Maxwell taking third.In theMasters’ itwas all aboutPietroMus-

cas and Andrew Cille for the overall titlewith Pietro going into the final race with a

narrow lead. The latter maintained his leadand thus won the class with Andrew havingto settle for second.The Downwind Dash Series will continue

on 9 January.

The South AfricanJunior Chess Championship is the largest chess tournament in South Africa. This year,more than 1 800 players from across the country will participate in the championship.“As chess is a mind sport, it is a great way for children to exercise their minds and bekept occupied during the school holidays. The finals of the Bondi Blu/Laguna Mallracing series last week proved that theslalom formula is a winner.

“This discipline will be part of the KiteWorld Series (PKRA) to be held nextyear,” says organiser of the local seriesOlaf van Tol.

This format of racing has also provedto be the most popular among partici-pants in the Professional Windsurfers’Association (PWA) World Tour.

This is also an easy event to follow forspectators, as seeing how positions rapid-ly change during the heats added to theexcitement along with the inevitablerushes while rounding the buoys andclose racing till the finish line.

During the last race of the current se-ries Colin Heckroodt not only won thelast tour stop but became the overall win-ner as well.

He was followed by the youngster Dy-lan Adriaans who is actually still compet-ing in the youth class.

Third place went to Olaf Marting, a pre-vious world speed record holder.

Iva Lopez claimed the overall women’stitle from a very close second finisher Si-mone Swanepoel. In the masters’ classArmin Wohlgemuth from Germany fin-ished first overall followed by GrantRoss.

The eighth series is planned to start 16January.
