Once there Pronk heard that the man whohung onto the vehicle had brought the childback home and became irate when the childcalled another man “daddy”.He apparently clung onto the car window

while the occupants tried to flee. While they were waiting to be helped, one

of the complainants saw the vehicle belong-ing to the man who tried to assault them pullinto a parking bay at the station, says Pronk.“The man (in the police station) was terri-

fied. He ran to two officers sitting in a vehicleand begged them to help him, but they re-fused.He then ran into the station, all thewayto thebackof the chargeoffice desk.Theotherman, who reeked of alcohol, was accompa-nied by his sister. They barged into the sta-tion, shouted at the three and proceeded to as-sault them!“The man followed the other towards the

back of the counter, punched him, andsmashed himagainst the glass. I found it verystrange that atno timedid the six officerswhowere there try prevent any of this fighting. The man’s sister also attacked the other twowomen, but my attention was on the twomenbehind the counter.”After the chaos settled, Pronk said an offic-

er escorted the man and his sister to their ve-hicle and allowed them to drive off.Pronk pointed out to the officer afterwards

that the two were clearly inebriated, but shewas ignored.Vosloo said both men opened assault cases

against the other. The Table View Community Police Forum

is apparently leaning on the police to fast-track the investigation.Pressure will also come from higher pow-

ers, according to Plato’s spokesperson.Botha said the matter has been referred to

the Department of Community Safety’s Polic-ing Complaints directorate. “Minister Platowill also be taking this specific incident upwith theprovincial police commissioner,GenArno Lamoer,” said Botha.Pronk’s allegation that the cameras in the

charge office are not working could not beverified at the time of going to print.Pronk said she urged the three to go to the

Table View police station. “I was sure theywould be safe there. I’ve also always told mychildren if their lives are in danger theyshould go to the nearest police station. If onecannot be safe at a police station, where canyou be safe?”

The battle thatchanged SouthAfrica’s futureThe re-enactment of the Battle of Blaau-

wberg – a historic battle that wasfought on 8 January 1806 – was the in-

teresting subject of the Durbanville Herit-age Society meeting on Saturday 26 July inthe Durbanville library hall.“Most peoplewho travel along the coastal

region of the Cape west coast give Blaauw-berg Hill a cursory glance, unaware of thishistoric battle, the outcome of which hada most profound effect on the South Africawe know today,” PamBeck, secretary of theDurbanville Heritage Society, wrote in a re-port about the meeting. She wrote that at the meeting there was

an amazing display of miniature soldiers, arrayed in their battle formations accord-ing to historical accounts.“Although the battle was of short dura-

tion, it had a profound effect on the historyof our nation, because it was the final inva-sion of our country fromwhich evolved theSouth Africa of today,” Beck explained. The event, organised by the Durbanville

Heritage Society in conjunction with veryknowledgeable speakers from the Friendsof the Blaauwberg Conservation Area, theChavonnes Battery Museum in the Water-front and the Wargames Society, was at-tended by about 50 visitors.

Historical eventsRoy Fuller-Gee, chairperson of the

Friends of the Blaauwberg ConservationArea, shared information about the ecologi-cal, geological and archaeological wealth, which has been found just within the con-servation reserve. Over 560 plant specieshave been identified in the reserve, ofwhich 40 are endangered species.Willem Steenkamp, renowned author, re-

searcher and narrator of historical events, gave a brief resume of historical eventsleading up to the battle.A fleet of 63 ships commandedbyAdmiral

SirHomePophamwas dispatched fromFal-mouth and Cork in late 1805.Aboard the transport ships was an inva-

sion force of 7 000 soldiers drawn from nu-merous regiments from Scotland, Ireland,Wales and Staffordshire.“The sight of the British armada must

have been quite awesomewhen it anchoredoff Blaauwberg on 5 January 1806.“It was the hottest ever recorded at the

Cape. The famous south easterwas blastingat full force and the surfwas extra-ordinari-ly high. The immediate landing of the Brit-ish forces was curtailed.“On 6 January some ships were ordered

to drop anchor at Losperdsbaai – calledMelkbosstrand today – fromwhere it wouldbe easier for the Scottish Infantrymen todisembark.“Imagine the tribulations these men

must have undergone, undernourished af-ter a long voyage, dressed in full regalia, loaded with all their heavy weaponry, bat-tling the wind, surf and the heat and thentrudging in formation over the huge sanddunes and almost impenetrable bush totake position behind Blaauwberg Hill.”

Untold hardshipThirty fivehighlanders drownednear the

rocks in the sea.The actual battle took place on 8 January

1806. The soft sand dunes, the spikey sandplain fynbos, the unbearable heat and theshortage of water caused untold hardshipto the opposing soldiers – and to make mat-tersworse theWaldeckermercenariesweresuffering fromverybaddysentery andwereunable to hold their ground against the on-slaught from the artillery and bayonetcharge by the Highland Brigade, Beck said. The surrender was signed on 18 January

1806 at the Treaty House in Woodstock.“Thanks to Francois Jacobs’ wonderful

display of miniature soldiers placed on alarge diorama of the Blaauwberg Battle-field, we were able to have a birds-eye viewof the battle.“Francois moved his miniature soldiers

around todemonstrate the course of thebat-tle,” Beck said.

Soldiers are displayed to reenact the Battle of Blaauwberg.

Milnerton police suspect CharmaineAnn Naidoo might be up to her oldtricks again.

Just a few months after Naidoo admittedguilt in several cases of fraud, she is onceagain on the police’s radar following a newbout of fraudulent activity.

Police are looking for her in connectionwith seven recent cases, and need the pub-lic’s help to find her.

Whether she is guilty of being a repeat of-fender is up to the judge to decide, but sheis currently a suspect and Milnerton policehave a warrant for her arrest.

Last year Naidoo lured prospective rent-ers into paying deposits for Sunset Beachproperty that never belonged to her in thefirst place.TygerBurger reported on this in October

last year in the article “Rental ‘con artist’nabbed”.

Naidoo’s sentence was suspended.

Increase in fraudIn the latest cases of alleged fraud, the

suspect advertised her apartment in Mil-nerton on Gumtree in June and then askedrenters to deposit money into her bank ac-count.

Some of the prospective tenants evenviewed the flat beforehand.

Seven people paid the deposit, but whenthe time came to move into the flat arrived, they found several others wanting to move

into it on the same day.According to W/O Ettienne Pretorius,

Naidoo “can help the police in their investi-gation”.

She is originally from Durban.“If anyone is aware of her whereabouts

they should contact me at Milnerton po-lice,” he says.

Pretorius used the opportunity to warnthe public of an increase in fraudulent ac-

tivities in and around Milnerton.“Businesses, especially Montague Gar-

dens, should be on their toes. It happens fartoo often that someone electronically trans-fer funds into an account, receives thegoods and then later the money in the ac-count is cancelled. This can happen if theypay money into an account using a stolencheque, for example. The money will reflectin your account for a few days, but then thebank will cancel the payment,” explainsPretorius.

Electronic salesHe adds that fraudulent electronic pay-

ments are rife on the Gumtree website.Second-hand goods are advertised, and

then a prospective buyer will make contact,“transfer” money and more often than notsend a courier to pick up the goods in placessuch as Century City.

After the goods are collected the sellerwill see that the money has been removedfrom his or her bank account.

The courier is often left completely in thedark and cannot be connected to the crime.

This makes the job of the police evenharder.

Pretorius says another method used by offraudsters is to send the seller an SMS thatlooks just like the one banks send accountholders advising that money has been paidinto their account.

“The best thing to do is to wait a few daysand see if the money has indeed beencleared. Only then should they hand overthe goods to the buyer,” says Pretorius.

Police search for known fraudster

Milnerton police are looking for CharmaineAnn Naidoo (31), who might help them intheir investigation into several cases of fraud.

Ons wil mense be-

Dié video hetmeer as 100 000 trefslae ge-kry, sê Werner.

There are very fewtrue canine landracesleft in the world, andSouth Africa can beproud to have one of them, the Africanis. You will undoubtedly have seen them

when driving in rural areas – graceful, well-balanced dogs with smooth coats in a multi-tude of colours and patterns over long, lean-muscled limbs. If you have met one, you will almost cer-

tainly remember their intelligence, alert-ness, friendliness and gentle natures.TheAfricanis dog is a “landrace” – a result

of natural selection and adaptation through-out the centuries.Unlike a landrace, breeds such as grey-

hounds or labradors have been created byhumans choosing specific traits such ashunting skill or fur colour. They are selec-tively bred to get a uniform behaviour andappearance. Some breeds were landracesbred in an attempt at standardisation. However, as soon as you standardise a lan-

drace with selective breeding it becomes abreed, not a landrace.Africanis dogs are not uniform in appear-

ance as it is anumbrella term for a fewdiffer-ent “strains”.They are generally medium-sized with a

functional, slender build, wedge-shapedheads and long muzzles. Their short coatsare usually light-brown, but can be brindledor patched. Some also have a “ridgeback”.A feature common to them all is their

highly expressive faces and beautiful, soul-ful eyes ringed with black “eyeliner” mark-ings.They are agile, hardy and fast, as well as

very alert and tend to have very few healthproblems.

But it is in the per-sonality category thatthe Africanis really ex-cels. Because they haveevolved alongside peo-ple, they tend to be ex-ceptionally good-na-

tured and even-tempered, as well as beingloyal and protective. If you want a dog who is perfectly adapted

to our climate, generally issue free, and awonderful companion, protector, andfriend, then adopt an Africanis or Africanis-mix dog. You will never look back. The Fisantekraal AnimalWelfare has sev-

eral Africanis-type dogs up for adoption.Their adoption fee is R500 for adult dogs. This includes spaying orneutering, vaccina-tions and deworming.Phone 084 505 2324 or send an email to in-

A possible counterfeiting syndicatein Parklands was uncovered byMetro Police on Tuesday last

week.Police arrested four suspects after re-

ceiving a tip-off from a member of thecommunity, that led them straight to thesuspects’ premises. After a brief search officers confiscat-

ro police says two scales, glass pipes, three laptops and 16 cellphones were al-so confiscated.“The scales were more than likely

used for measuring drugs, even thoughno drugs were found during the opera-tion. Glass pipes are devices used tosmoke the drug commonly known as‘rocks’,” she explained.Faro said the investigation is ongoing

Changing the way you see changes your life.Blurred vision has many causes, many of which can easily be

resolved by a Femtosecond-assist laser procedure. The most

common of these is iLASIK - a painless procedure that has

helped millions around the world restore their eyesight. Our

Femtosecond laser technology improves the safety,

predictability and accuracy of many other eye procedures as

well, amongthemcorneal transplants.

People suffering fromhighdegrees of astigmatism (especially

after previous corneal transplant surgery) can now have their

astigmatism drastically reduced with Femtosecond-assist

astigmatickeratotomy.

Other Femtosecond laser procedures include intra-corneal

ring segment surgery to treat irregular corneas (in

keratoconus), and micro-lens corneal inlays to correct

presbyopia.

Aman was arrested just 30 minutes af-ter the City of Cape Town received atip-off that he was allegedly removing

abalone from rocks at Melkbosstrand. The City of Cape Town’s law enforcement

officers nabbed the 28-year-old suspectedpoacher on Wednesday last week when theyfound a total of 64 abalone in his possession.

JP Smith, mayoral committee memberfor safety and security, says officers almostimmediately commenced with a stop andsearch operation in the area.

“A complaint was laid by a member of thepublic about a man who had illegally re-moved abalone from the rocks close to theMelkbosstrand Integrated Rapid Transportoffice,” he explains.

“Law enforcement officers investigatedthe complaint and soon apprehended thesuspect when they found a man with a blackbackpack filled with abalone, as well as thetools used to remove it from the rocks.Poaching of abalone is a criminal offenceand suspects are detained at the police sta-tion for court appearances.

“If suspects are found guilty, the magis-trate will impose sentence.”

WarningSmith continued by thanking the com-

munity for their support and hoped the ar-rests will serve as a warning to other would-be poachers.

“We are watching and will work tireless-ly with our partners to eradicate this prac-tice,” he concluded.

The team of volunteers at the anti-poach-ing unit (APU) in Melkbosstrand fight the

scourge of poaching on a continual basis, but they cannot do it along and need thecommunity to lend their help.

“We always need more funds and man-power,” said the APU’s André van der Mer-we.

“We hold various fund-raisers every yearfor the local neighbourhood watch, andfrom there some of the funds are channelledto the APU.

“The next fund-raiser will be a golf dayon 7 November at Atlantic Beach.”

According to van der Merwe it is easy forthe public to get behind something like rhi-no poaching, but abalone poaching is justas important.

“The abalone found along the WesternCape coastline are the only of its kind in theworld, and current projections indicatethat these abalone could be extinct withinfive years if something drastic isn’t done.People must also realise that poaching goeshand-in-hand with other organised crimessuch as the drug trade, prostitution andmoney laundering. One often finds thatcriminals don’t trade money, but trade inproduct instead.”

Eyes and earsVan der Merwe adds that another way

people can get involved in putting a stop topoaching is to become the “eyes and ears”of the APU or law enforcement.

“As soon as they see someone suspiciousalong the coast who might be involved inpoaching they should contact us or the cityimmediately,” urges van der Merwe.V Members of the public can report any suspectedillegal activities to city law enforcement on021 596 1999. They can also contact the APU’s 24hour line on 076 583 0270.

SAPS and Table View watch a mean crime fighting teamANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

Hardly a week goes by in which TableView Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW)members and the local police don’t

have some spectacular successes in theirfight against crime.

In one of the more recent successes a sus-pect simply sat downand conceded defeat in-stead of trying to run away.

The suspect’s resignation meant thatthree people were eventually arrested aftera cell phone was stolen and a motor homeransacked.

The story began at 23:00 on Thursday 24July.

“Members patrolling the area aroundBay-side Shopping Centre spotted a well-dressed

man running from there towards BrizaRoad, with police vans chasing him,” saysTVNW spokesperson, Jamie Agenbach.

A woman was apparently the victim of acell phone theft after two men walked up toher near the MacDonalds restaurant, sprayedherwith pepper spray and ran awayafter grabbing the phone.

Mobilised“Members mobilised and assisted in the

search for the men. One of the suspects waslocated in a park and the police chased himdown and apprehended him while he wastrying to escape.”

According to Agenbag, the suspect is wellknown in the area and has on more than oneoccasion been noted by TVNW members as“acting suspiciously”.

Theother suspectwas still at large though. Two days later the story continued, how-

ever, when employees at the BP garage gaveTVNW valuable information.

One of the watch’s members has a motorhome parked at the BP garage in SandownRoad. While getting his car washed, he no-ticed “strange activity” near the motorhome. He went to investigate and saw thatvagrants had taken up residence in the mo-tor home, had stripped it of all wiring andstolen fixtures and fittings from inside themotor home.

When TVNW investigated they saw one ofthe squatters fleeing.

“We alerted the BP garage owners andworkers of this problem and gave a descrip-tion of the suspect. A few days later the em-ployees told us they spotted the suspect in

the area.

Surrender“Four members responded and appre-

hended the suspect, who confessed and in-formed them there were three people in-volved. While waiting for the police the sus-pect positively identified another suspectwhohappened to bewalking past at the time,so our members asked him to stop, but hedecided to flee the scene.”

The police arrived on the scene and a littlelater TVNW members spotted the secondsuspect in Pikkewyn Road heading towardsthe beach front.

That was when the suspect simply gaveup. It was later alleged by TVNW membersthat this suspectwas the otherman involvedin the cell phonemugging a few days earlier.

OscarWilde het dít verstaan: “Women aremeant to be loved, not to be understood.”En die laaste wyse woorde oor wat

LOUISA STEYL@lounotes

A local businessman is setting out ona music adventure, having just rele-ased his debut album, Verily, Verily.

Hyram Doolings, a Zevenwacht familyman, has roped in some of Cape Town’sfinest musicians to help on the gospel al-bum he launched in Kenridge this wee-kend.

“As a little boy I always wanted to sing,”Hyram says. His grandmother took him tochurch where she in-troduced him to thechoir master and itwas just a few monthsbefore he was singingsolo.

“The choir used tosit upstairs and the pe-ople used to turn theirbacks to see who thislittle boy singing is,”Hyram recalls.

Almost 50 yearsdown the line, Hy-ram’s desire to singturned into a “huge de-sire to write”, andthat’s how Verily, Veri-ly was born.

As a Capetonian, Hy-ram says he was al-ways fascinated byjazz, and he alwayswanted to sing a “jazzykind of gospel”.

While he hopes to spread the messageof God’s love, some of the songs are relatedto his own struggles, which brought himcloser to God.

As a child, Hyram was exposed to an al-coholic father and an abusive mother, andsinging was an escape for the young boywho once tried to commit suicide by jum-ping into a river.

He was saved by his uncle, but thatwasn’t the end of his near-death experien-ces. He got trapped in quicksand, nearlydrowned, and was hit by a car, which sawhim go through twelve operations and oc-cupational therapy to even out his mouth.

“Some of the songs are related to the suf-

fering of Jesus and I could somehow to re-late to that through my own suffering, butnothing compares to his suffering for me,”Hyram says.

While he points out that this theme isn’texplicitly laid out in the lyrics, it can befound in the “feeling of the music”.

Hyram’s grandmother used to oftenread the Bible to him and his siblings andthe albums’ name come from a scriptureshe was particularly fond of, John5:24:“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, excepta man be born of water and of the Spirit,

he cannot enter intothe kingdom of God.”

He says it was hisgrandmother’s rea-ding that eventuallyled to the album, which he has dedica-ted to her.

Hyram says he takeshis hat off to the peoplewho worked with himon Verily, Verily. “It’sguys that have reallybeen in the industryfor a long time.”

Camillo Lombard,Jonathan Rubain andDonveno Prins are justsome of the names inthe album sleeve.

It’s with the help ofhis family and theloyal people that sur-round him that Hyram

knows his business is in safe hands whilehe pursues his music career. He felt, con-sidering how tough the local music indus-try is, that he wanted to build a career andhave some money in the bank before ta-king on the music world.

“I strongly believe that there’s a time foreverything,” Hyram says, adding: “Whenit’s time for my music, there’s time for mymusic.”V Hyram’s album is available from NueLight Productions on 072 133 2370 or [email protected] more information about him, visit his Facebook page.V Hyram visited the Orange Couch to give readersa taste of his music.
