On Monday morning at about 08:30 occu- pants of the main house on the property were alerted that one of the wendy houses next to the house was on fire. “We ran out immediately,” says Azer, who was in the main house at the time. “I knew that Richard was still in the room and tried to get him out but he was too heavy for me as the flames and smoke were just too thick. “While I tried to get my breath, the owner of the main house managed to get in and got him out, but we could see that he had been bad- ly burnt.” Tragically he died from his injuries later on Monday. A thug in Delft got more than he bargainedfor during an attempted robbery. The incident happened on Saturdaywhen

fourmen tried to robMusterfarHassan (28),at gunpoint in Athi Street, Leiden.Hassen resisted the attempt and fought

with the suspects, but in the ensuing scufflea shotwent off hittinghim in the right lowerleg. This did not deter him and he continued

struggling with them but another shot wentoff hitting him in the arm but it also hit oneof the robbers in his left leg. When police responded to the call the rob-

bers fled empty handed by jumping overneighbouring walls and roofs.During this chase the injured robber fell

off a roof and broke his leg as well. While three of the suspects managed to

evade arrest the 20-year-old who was in-jured was arrested and faces charges of at-tempted robbery as well as attempted mur-der. He is currently being treated in hospi-tal.

. A keen eye for criminal activity led to

the recovery of counterfeit money and thearrest of two suspects. On Wednesday 5 December members of

the Delft Visible Policing Unit decided tosearch a house in Auber Street Delft South. The search emanated from an earlier ar-

rest of a suspect for the illegal possessionof drugs.During this arrest the suspect then gave

the address as his, whilst he was arrestedat another address.Armed with a search warrant the mem-

bers were pleasantly surprised when theyfailed to recover any drugs, but rather coun-terfeit money.During the search of the premises police

recovered and seized one fake R20 note, 35R50 notes, 110 R100 notes and 20 R200 notes, with a value of R16 770.Police also seized a scanner used to copy

the money.They arrested a 35-year-old man and 29-

year-old woman who face charges of beingin possession and the manufacturing ofcounterfeit money.

Dreams really do come trueREYANA STEYN

Wishes do come true. This was proved when a Parow teenager

was selected to be a beneficiary of the KFM94.5 Christmas wish so she can receive acornea operation she urgently needs.

At the age of nine Robyn Links (now 17)was diagnosedwith keratoconus – a diseaseof the eyewhere the eye loses its shape caus-ing many other problems along with it.

Although Robyn’s condition worsenedand schooling became difficult for her asthe years went by, she remained her posi-tive, bubbly self.

She has been on the waiting list at Tyger-berg Hospital since her diagnosis, but stillhad not been notified and her parents couldnot afford the operation privately whichcost R50 000.

AnnekadeVries, a teacher at ParowHighSchool took the initiative and wrote to theradio station explainingRobyn’s condition;and onWednesday a jovial atmosphere sur-rounded the school as KFM staff arrived togive Robyn and her parents the good news– the Dischem Foundation sponsored theR50 000 for the operation, which includesadditional costs for contact lenses.

Robyn says it has been an overwhelmingexperience.

“When I was diagnosed the optometristprescribed special contact lenses whichmade my life a bit easier at school. At 16,it got really bad and the optometrist thenprescribed that I wear two contact lenses(one hard and soft) as the hard contact lens-es were damaging my eyes.”

Robyn was diagnosed with chronic kera-toconus in February and in August thisyear she was told that she needed to havea cornea transplant in six months.

“It’s been difficult as I can’t see writingon the board and I have to wait for friendsto finishwriting so I can take thework from

their books. It’s tough but I wasn’t going tolet this get me down and put in the extraeffort. Parow High has been very support-ive and enlarges all my paperwork.”

Being a beneficiary couldn’t have come ata better moment as Robyn will be in matricnext year and is planning on studying lawthereafter.

“I am so grateful to KFM and Dischemwhomade this possible. Iwason thewaitinglist for cornea donors at TygerbergHospitaland I had already been waiting since I wasnine and my parents couldn’t afford it. Itmeans the world to me that my teacher (DeVries) wrote in and that I was chosen. This

truly is the best Christmas gift.”Robert Links, Robyn’s father, says it is in-

credible.“It is absolutely amazing what they did

for us.Wewere called believing that we hadto talk about Robyn’s computer classes fornext year, which she could no longer takebecause of her eyesight and then we real-ised the real reason.”

He says it means a lot to the entire familyand is a weight off their shoulders.

V The family would like to thank KFM,Dischem Foundation, M-Net, Anneke andParowHigh School for all their support andfor making this operation possible.

The KFM wish came true for Robyn Links who can now receive an operation which she desper-ately needs. TV presenter Elana Afrika (and old pupil of Parow High School), Robyn with herparents Marion and Robert Links with the teacher Anneke de Vries who wrote in on behalf ofRobyn.

Meer as 1,3 ton klere is in ’n week ingesa-mel. In 177 sakke was daar 1 324,9 kg klere, wat ingesamel is.

Kasselsvlei Primary are banking on giftsthatwillmake ahugedifference in the livesof their learners.

It all came together on Friday when thelearners, teachers and staff at the schoolcelebrated some major milestones that in-cludes the plans for a new school with cor-porate sponsors.

On Friday Absa Capital’s team celebrat-ed the completion of the Absa Capital Up-grading Citizenship Project at the schoolwhichwas part of itsMake aDifference ini-tiative.

They visited the school during Novem-ber last year to assist the school with theplanting of trees and shrubs as well as toshare tips on energy saving initiatives.

“The Absa team was so moved by theplight and poverty of the school and itslearners, they decided to adopt the schoolas a core singular Citizenship project for2012,” says Simon Turner, principal: Cor-porate and Investment Bank, WesternCape.

Staff volunteered 236 hours to the school, which included cleaning, upgrading facili-ties and painting. Turner evaluated the re-sults and indicated the contrast to deliveron a task that’s not normally associatedwith the financial sector or traditionalbanking, yet the result is the same, a happycustomer.

“What was also meaningful was the timetaken by staff to teach the children the im-portance of saving for the future,” he said.

Principal of the school, ChristianDavids, was so impressed with the lessons, knowl-edge and skills transfer shared at theschool that he informed the Western CapeEducation Department who then visited

the school. The Department has since taken a deci-

sion to build a brand new school adjacentto the existing school which will open in2014.

The upgrading project initiated by Absaalso captured the interest of one of Absa’sesteemed clients, namely Pick n Pay, whoshare the same passion to improve thelearning conditions of the school.

There was great excitement when theKFMTruckofLove, arrangedbyPicknPaywith a truckload ofAbsa sponsored toys forall the learners arrived at the school.

Therewas alsowide variety of fun activi-ties for the children such as face painting, dancing and games that added to the funand festivities on the day.

“We take pride in our partnership withour bankers, to bring loads of fun activitiesto the learners of Kasselsvlei Primary,”said Mark Jennings, regional marketingmanager for Pick n Pay, Western Cape.

“Our company family, specifically fromOttery Hyper, played an instrumental rolein the supplying of materials for the up-grading of the facilities.

“Wewere also fortunate to have SuzanneBerman-Ackerman, the company’s trans-formation director, sharing in the excite-ment at the school.”

“This was undoubtedly the highlight ofthe year for all the learners, teachers andstaff at the school,” concluded Davids.

“I want to thank all involved for their ef-forts to improve the facilities at the schooland for making the end of the learners’school year extra special.”

Simon concluded that citizenship isabout doing the right thing that will havea positive impact on the communities andenvironments in which they operate.

Simon Turner and Mark Jennings join in the fun with some of the learners at Kasselsvlei Primary.

Delighted with ‘new clothes’GARY VAN DYK

Blustering winds and blistering heat wereno match for the joy in Blikkiesdorp on Sat-urday.

The community came out in great excite-ment to witness the arrival of the UTI truckfrom Naartjie Kids which was carrying justover 18 560 children’s garments for distribu-tion amongst the 8 000 kids in the communi-ty.

The garments were collected during theirNaartjie Love Foundation clothing drivewhich was driven through stores nation-wide. Members of the public were encour-aged to donate their unwanted children’sgarments (anybrand) in return for a rewardof a 5 % discount voucher for each item do-nated.

Headed by marketing manager and chair-person of the foundation, Esperanza Nortje,

the team arrived in convoy to assist in theoff-loading as well as an initial hand-out ofthe clothing.

Nortje said that they were overwhelmedby the generosity of their customers, withsome customers even refusing the discountvouchers and declaring that they were hap-py to donate to such a worthy cause.

Community leaderswereall present to ac-cept the donation which they have knownabout since the inception of the drive 10weeks ago.

The final amount of clothing collectedwas “beyond their wildest imagination”, asBlikkiesdorp Community leader, JeromeDaniels, declared in a heartfelt thank youto the team.

Lee Warren, philanthropist and self ap-pointed ambassador for the communitysaid mechanisms were in place to ensureeach home was given their fair share.

Brakke, Kraaie behaal segesSAREL BURGER

Ockert Erasmus (3/24) was Brackenfell sesuksesvolste boulers.
