de-sac in Albert Philander Road, BlueDowns, while it was burning. The area is surrounded by bush and is lo-
cated one kilometre from the Blue DownsMagistrate’s Court.Several passers-by stopped to take photos
of the incident. Many alsowonderedwheth-er any occupantswere inside the vehicle.Atthe time it was difficult to determine as theflames were intense and had already de-stroyed much of the cabin interior.
Soon after TygerBurger arrived at thescene two police vehicles stopped to investi-gate. The officers however kept their dis-tance as several parts of the vehicle werestarting to explode.Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of
Cape Town’s fire and rescue services, saidfire trucks responded to the incident at11:34.He said sparks from a short circuit in the
electrical wiring ignited the insulation andspread to the cab section of the vehicle, causing the fire.“Fortunately, no injuries were reported,”

downe Road fire station and five fire-fight-ers took about 10 minutes to extinguish theblaze.

Attacks on motorists frequenting OldFaure Road to make use of the servi-ces offered by sex workers, have de-
creased. This is the reassurance of Brigadier Vin-
cent Beaton, cluster commander for theBlue Downs and Delft police areas.Beaton was addressing a crowd at the Po-
licing Needs and Priorities (PNP) meetingheld at the Mfuleni community hall on Fri-day.The PNP is an annual meeting held in dif-
ferent areas across the province by theWestern Cape department of communitysafety.“Old Faure Road and the prostitutes who
work there contribute a lot to the crime inour cluster.“These women offer their services, jump
into the vehicles of their clients, then nor-mally drive to the bushes of Blueberry Hillwhere the customers then find themselvescompromised and get robbed.”
Police give bush criminals a blowBeaton said the police have taken several
steps over the past few months to stop theproblem.“We are acting on information and I must
say the volume is coming down.“We have been focussing on the issue and
have made some strides.”Oftenmenwho fall victim to these robber-
ies claim to have had a flat tyre or that theyhad to stop next to the road tomake a phonecall when they report the matter to the po-lice.“Why always on that road? This does not
seem to happen on any other road,” Beatonwondered.TygerBurger has reported extensively on
the attacks taking place in the area. To dateseveral murders have also occurred in the
Old Faure and Blueberry Hill area.Police claim many of the suspects in-
volved in the attacks reside in a nearby in-formal settlement.
Drugs high on the agendaDuring Friday’s meeting, attended by all
local station commanders, ward council-
lors, church and community leaders, Bea-ton also touched on drug related crimes, taxi violence disputes, domestic violenceand the important role of community polic-ing forums. The crowd was addressed by Western
Cape minister of safety and security, DanPlato, on Saturday.

A group of concerned Kalkfon-tein residents say they tookcontrol of the local communi-
ty hall because the facility “be-longs to all.”The group fighting for the use of
the hall belongs to the EFF, ANCand Agang, Ayanda Ntsabo, wardcommittee member and EFF mem-ber, says.Last month TygerBurger report-
ed on several issues relating to thehall including the facility beingrented out to residents at a setamount as well as people occupy-ing the hall as a shelter.Allegations that only the EFF is
involved, is untrue, Ntsabo says. The group, consisting of twomen
and four women, told TygerBurgeronFriday lastweek that their dras-tic steps to take control of the hallfollows the inefficient manage-ment of the facility by the previousmanager. At the beginning of the year the
hall, located in Mount FletcherStreet, Kalkfontein, has been man-aged by the Kalkfontein Develop-ment Forum. Since May howeverit was handed back to the City ofCape Town’s property manage-ment department. The group, who now represents
the majority of the community, says allegations that they rent it
out for an exorbitant amount ofmoney is untrue. “The hall shouldbe used by the entire community. The leaders here unfortunately donot work together or for the com-munity, so we decided to take ac-tion,”VuyisekaBebe, secretary forthe EFF, explains. The group opened a joint bank
account at the PostBank at the PostOffice, she explains further.“The money paid into the ac-
count is used to maintain the hall.We do not take any cash but askpeople to deposit the money intothe account,” she says.TygerBurger viewed the
stamped bank booklet in which
two signatures appear. The bal-ance for the account to date is justover R9 000.“People pay R400 for the hall
which includes the electricity.”Nosipho Bout, an ANC member,
said the account is necessary. “Thepipes are broken, the toilet is dirtyand the lights are not working. theyard is also filthy,” she adds.Only meetings, parties, concerts
and graduations are charged, thegroup claims. Funerals or church-es are exempted.“If any other organisations try to
do the same we will welcome it. Itis for the benefit of the communi-ty,” Bene adds.

If you want to be part of fighting povertyand making a change through empower-ment, there’s an organisation in Belhar
waiting on your call. The Poverty Relief and Empowerment for
Change Organisation (Preco), situated onthe corners of Arundel and Pontac streets,is a non-profit organisation that addressesprominent matters in the community.Their priorities range from substance
abuse including alcohol abuse, to domesticviolence and after-school care programmes.Headed by founder FahgmeedaAmeerodi-
en, a singlemother of four, it started in Janu-ary of 2003 and still strives to empower notonly the younger generation, but also theadults and those closely associatedwith peo-ple suffering from substance abuse.Ameerodien is also the coordinator of the
victim empowerment project at the Belharpolice station. The organisationworks closelywith other
role players on various projects in the com-munity. These role players include BelharSAPS, SR4Y (Safe Roads for Youth), the De-partment of Social Development, Acker-mans head office as well as the City of CapeTown’s EPWP program for youth.
Focus on substance abuseOne of the primary projects currently un-
derway is focused on substance abuse.“When it comes to substance abuse ad-
dicts, many of us might be confused on whatto do or where to go,” says Ameerodien.“At Preco, addicts or rather clients, are
dealt with the highest quality of care, con-cern and professional counselling.”Ameerodien, also one of the councillors,
encourages parents and the public to comeforward to address such matters.“Manyparents are out of their depthwhen
it comes to ideas on how to save their childfrom substance abuse.“They might not be able to afford the high
costs of rehabilitation, while others couldsay that rehab does not work for their child.“With patience, the correct approach and
determination, anyaddict canbe cured,” shesaid. She also explained that in most cases ad-
dicts are considered the outcast of society, even though they are trying to change orhave been cured.Preco offers the client the opportunity of
feeling theneed tobeapart of something spe-cial – something that makes them returnagain and again.“Every client is important, given equal
treatment and also nurtured on how to sur-vive in the outsideworld,” saidAmeerodien.“Parents should be nurtured in order to
nurture” is a motto that Ameerodien feelscan create a better social and family envi-ronment for addicts.
“Giving parents tools on how to handletheir child is what we are currently address-ing,” she said.
Youth and the effects of drugsAnother high-priority project that they
run in conjunction with Belhar SAPS andSR4Y will focus mainly on youth and the ef-fects of substance abuse.“Abuse is a cycle that partly starts with
substance abuse,” she added.“Individuals whose children are not on
drugs or drinking alcohol could ask whatthis has to do with them. Well, every personin society is affected, directly or indirectly.“An uncle or a cousin, a friend or more
commonly, the neighbour next door, could
be involved in substance abuse. Are we justsimplygoing to cut ourselves fromthesepeo-ple?”The organisation is looking for more resi-
dents from the area to join them in their ac-tivities.“Everybody can play their part from help-
ing to maintain the containers that we workfrom, and the youth can be part of our playsthathave amessage against substance abuseand road safety. If we all work together, itwill make for better and safer neighbour-hoods,” she said.V More information about the organisation is available from Ameerodien on 078 209 7706 or MoulanaZakariyah Belcham on 084 615 1679. There is more than martial arts at the Ka-rate-Zen dojo in Bishop Lavis – it’s aboutgrowing through life. That is the mantra that has been in-
stilled there by their sensei Kiyoshi Eddiedu Plessis who was one of the foundermembers of Karate-Zen SA in 1982.“You must not GO through life, you
must GROW through life,” says the 7thdan who has been teaching the sport inBishop Lavis for more than 30 years.“At Karate-Zen we teach respect, disci-
pline, self-defence as well as to boost yourself-confidence. We also believe in peopleand their abilities and together we striveto be successful.“Three of my senior students that are
proof of this growth are Ebrahim Abra-hams, Gasant Abrahams and JermaineRoman who have been training with mefor over 18 years and really took the mes-sage of growing through life to heart.”DuPlessiswas also proud of their recent
achievements at an international tourna-ment that was held this year.“Our dojo did very well when they won
more than tenmedals at theKarate-Zen in-ternational championship that took placeat the Belhar indoor centre in May. JudeKock won two gold medals, Tahriq Groen-wald won gold and silver while ShakielHeyns and Zelia Martin won gold.”With all these achievements Du Plessis
feels that there is room for growth in theclub, but they need some sponsorships toget more children taking part.“We would really like to help other
young children who are also interested inthe sport as this would keep them off thestreets,” he says.“There are a lot of youths out there who
are interested but cannot afford it as a lotof parents are unemployed, and we wouldreally like to help them.“It’s aboutmore than the sport – it’s also
about teaching them to realise the positivepotential within themselves.“By assisting them it is an investment
in the future of this community and intheir futures. All formsof sponsorshipwillgo towards their fees and getting moretraining equipment.”V For more information about joining the dojo ortheir needs contact Kiyoshi Eddie Du Plessis on084 586 7651.

Cape Town Tourism has launched the “LoveCape Town neighbourhood series”, a collec-tion of videos revealing three of the city’ssuburbs. The videos are a direct response to the
“travel like a local” trend. This after re-search revealed visitors want to experiencethe places they travel in ways that exposethem to the quirky and interesting featuresenjoyed by locals.Showcasing local hidden gems around the
city, three areas have been chosen for thefirst videos in the series, with another ex-pected to be made in the next three months.Viewers are givena sneakpeak into the localhotspots by well-known Cape Town locals.Celebrity chef Karen Dudley takes you to
Woodstock, with its eclectic blend of old andultra-modern Cape Town; local comedianSiv Ngesi to the cosmopolitan heart of thecity centre and musician Arno Carstens tothe beautiful coastal suburb with the feel ofa fishing village, Kalk Bay.According to CEO Enver Duminy, Cape
Town Tourism is responding to this trend toexplore local haunts by loading neighbour-hood guides onto YouTube.“We understand that we’re appealing to
the main target audience, but also that withthis new trend we can actively spread thepositive effect of tourism,” he says.Direct exposure allows local businesses,
especially the smaller ones, to be showcasedon a global platform, Duminy explains.“This will also allow for a direct injection
of funds into areas beyond the traditionaltourist routes or sites. This will ultimatelylead to increased job creation and a widerspread of the tourist rand,” he says.V The videos can be viewed at www.youtube.com/user/CapeTownTourism.

SAREL BURGER
Endit is hierwaardie lagwekkende syvan
die Ierse treurmare opduik.Hierdie “nasionale” Rhino’s-span is bloot

At the age of 17, Kyle AppelHaupt (Brackenfell HighSchool) is making a name for
himself as a sprinter on the worldstage.
Kyle is the TygerBurger Sportstarof the Month winner.
Earlier this year Kyle ran the200m in a time of 20:57 at the WorldYouth Athletics championship inColumbia, winning a silver medal. What makes this achievement evenmore remarkable is the fact that thistime was the second fastest time(youth) in the world ever and theeighth fastest time in history over-all, with Jamaican icon Usain Boltthe world record holder with 19:19.“Running that time was massive
formyconfidence. It showedme thatI am good enough to compete withthe best in the world and it only
drives me to work harder and im-prove on my times.“I have to thankmy coach,Marcel
Otto. We train five days a week. Wemakeagood teamand it shows in theresults. It makes things easier whenyouhave a good support structure athome as well. I am truly blessed,”said Kyle.Kyle represented Western Prov-
ince junior rugby, but soon realisedthat the track was his forte.
“I do the 100m and 200m, and atour school meetings I also do the400m for fun, but my focus is theshorter distance. I would have to saythat the 200m is my favourite as I al-ways pick up speed late in the race.“This year has been a good one for
me. At the Athletics South Africachampionship earlier this year inBloemfontein I won silver in the 100m and gold in the 200m and gold inthe 4x100m relay. At the African
Youth championship in Mauritius Iwon silver again in the 100m and Iam very proud of our gold medal inthe relay.“It is an honour for me to be cho-
sen as the TygerBurger Sportstar ofthe Month; I am truly humbled.Thank you!” said Kyle.It is a dream for Kyle to represent
his country at the Olympic Gamesand to win a gold medal. For now, the focus is on theWorld
Youth championship in Russia nextyear.Bosman,McNulty andDuToit Op-
tometrists gave him a pair op sun-glasses of his choice. Hennie Bos-man from the Welgemoed Kyokush-in-kan dojo spoiled him with aR1 000 prize and Dr Costa Kapniasfrom Ready Room in Willowbridgewill give him a few sport scientificsessions to ensure his body per-forms at its peak.
