Business hub left strugglingdue to drug addict vandalsTANDYLEE MARINUS

Residents of Happy Valley are deeply un-happy with drug addicts polluting the com-munity with acts of vandalism.

“Bite the hand that feeds you” is a phrasethat is too often bandied about.

CommunityworkerDoreenWelkomfromHappy Valley has raised her concerns forthe current state of the community.

The Happy Valley business hub has re-cently been targeted by addicts.

Formore than four years there have beenmany trials and tribulations.

A severe case of theft and vandalism is be-ing experienced in thebusinesshubmakingit impossible for entrepreneurs to make aliving.

“How can the community break a placedown like this?” asked Doreen.

Those responsible for these acts steal cop-per pipes, light bulbs and other items thathas scrap value.

They then venture out on the street, sell-ing whatever they have stolen or broken offto illegal scrapyards, to fulfil their nextdrug fix.

“We as the community will have to cometogether in trying to address these issuesurgently,” she said.

Children can be seen loitering the streets, dayandnight, loungingon corners andhud-dling in spaces - and this gives off a negativeatmosphere, says Doreen.

“These are children who don’t go toschool. whose parents cannot learn to con-

trol them properly. They need to havemorerespect for their elders,” she said.

The business hub is one of the first devel-opments in the Happy Valley area and forbusiness owner Peshida Nyamande (26)these acts of vandalism is disheartening.

Peshide owns Tapes and Tin Computers,an internet cafe, and is often the target be-cause vandals can make a killing with sto-len cables and computer parts.

“It is very painful to see people trying toget you down. Sometimes Iwant to give up,”Peshida said.

She highlights that it is difficult for herto pay rent and is living off the little shemakes from photocopy sales.

“Parents need to see to the behaviour oftheir children, They should be attendingschool instead they are hanging aroundhere,” she said.

Doreen emphasises that the sole purposeof the cafe was to make it central for thecommunity and save petrol money.

“Governmenthas plougheda lot ofmoneyinto the business hive and for future busi-ness to operate it is just impossible, said Do-reen.

She hopes that a law will be put in placeto keep drug dealers and vandals off thestreets.

“The dark corners is where they do theirbusiness.

“This is where they kill people.“We are tired of HappyValley’s drug deal-

ers and children who don’t go to school,”said Doreen.

On Thursday 16 May a cluster operationwhich included theKleinvlei,Mfuleni andKuils River police took place.

Together with the Crime IntelligenceGathering (CIG), a house in RaymondAckerman street was approached where54 SASSA (South African Social SecurityAgency) cards, 38 ID books, five Absacards, three Capitec cards, four post bankcards and an FNB andNedbank cardwereconfiscated.

W/O Annacletta Mothoalo, mediaspokesperson for the Kleinvlei police con-firmed that SASSA officials were asked tocome out and investigate the incident.

“SASSAwill deal with the lost card andstolen ID books. It was uncalled for andwhat makes it sad is that the majority of

the people are elderly,” said Mothoalo.A suspect has been arrested. In a separate incident, in a house in

Melville street, Beverly Park, GrahamMongale was arrested for the alleged pos-session of a hand grenade.

Motives as to howheobtained the objectare unknown.

Also a house in Devontree Street, Strad-fordGreenyielded onemagazinewith fiverounds and mandrax tablets for which amale suspect, Christopher Martins wasarrested.

“We would like to thank and applaudthe community andas informers to the po-lice and the CIG,” said Mothoalo.

She further applauded the community’sinvolvement in wanting to curb crime.

A recent rise in housebreakings have infest-ed all sectors of the Kleinvlei area.

In anurgent appeal by station commander,Colonel JoanStroebel, shewarns the commu-nity to be very aware of purchasing stolengoods.

“We are aware of the market for second-hand dealers, such as Cash Crusaders,” saidKleinvlei police spokespersonWarrantOffic-er Annacletta Mothoalo.

What the police have found, when payingvisits to such hubs where second-hand deal-

ers trade, is that most of the equipment andgoods are not stolen.

“Weurge the community tomake sure thatthey are presented with a receipt and ID doc-ument before buying anything,” said Moth-oalo.

Mothoalo further encouraged the commu-nity to reveal anyonewho is known to be sell-ing stolen goods to ensure that the perpetra-tors are brought to justice.V To report such cases, contact Colonel Joan Stroebelon 021 902 8300.

Shoppers at GrandCentral ShoppingCentrein Eerste River should be alert – hiding inthe hustle and bustle are criminals ready tostrike.Nicolaas and Lina Smit learned this after

theirmonthly groceries, together with theircar – 1999 red Ford Laser –was stolen on Fri-day 10 May.The elderly pair who have been living at

Penhill Estate for the last 40 years, usuallydo their grocery shopping at the centre.“We do our shopping there because it’s

closer to the house. We entered for a merefew minutes and the next thing you know, our car is gone,” said Nicolaas.A security guard had been on guard but

his attempts in assisting the couple provedunfruitful. “He handed us a piece of paperto give to the manager of Shoprite, askingfor a fence to be put around the parking ar-ea,” said Nicolaas. He immediately raised questions as to

whether this solutionwould further preventcriminals from engaging in such activity.“We only want our car back, that’s all,”

said Lina.Nicolaas raised his concerns that had his

situation been notified to another police sta-tion, specifically in the southern suburbs, itwould have been discovered sooner.“The police should be doing their work

more effectively during the day,” said Nico-laas. Spokeswoman for Kleinvlei police, An-nacletta Mothoalo acknowledged that inci-dences such as these occur everyday.“People tend to leave things in the car

which draws attenition to thieves,” saidMo-thoalo. She further urged the community tonot leave their belongings visible or unat-tended.Station Commander of Kleinvlei police,

Colonel Joan Stroebel will be not tolerateany miscondut regarding service deliveryor misconduct by the police.“They should not forget that they are ser-

Youth development is coming into the spot-light with some new initiatives by the city.In keeping with this administration’s

commitment to building a Caring and SafeCity, the City of Cape Town Social Develop-ment andEarly ChildhoodDevelopment Di-rectorate have begun implementing anumber of projects specifically aimed atyouth development. These include two Expanded Public

Works Programme job creation projects, providing support to organisations fromthe communities that youth reside in to as-sist them to gain works skills. This is linked to the work skills training

project that provides two-month job oppor-tunities to apply the skills learnt throughthe training provided by the cityThere will also be life skills training ses-

sions with school-going youth as part of anextramural activity.Six work and employment skills training

workshops for unemployed and out ofschool youth at risk through the Universityof theWesternCapewill also be takingplacewhile the Cape Peninsula University ofTechnology will be arranging six organisa-tional capacity-building workshops for or-ganised youth structures, networks and fo-rums.“Young people need opportunities like

these to engage in meaningful activities, have a voice, take responsibility for theiractions, and actively participate in civic

discourse,” said mayoral committee mem-ber for social development and early child-hood development, Suzette Little. She also pointed out that this programme

wants to facilitate young people’s entry intothe job market and thus work towards re-ducing youth unemployment levels by pro-viding young peoplewithwork and employ-ment skills, support and training.“Through this initiative we want to build

partnerships and networks to render sup-port to youth at risk in a co-ordinated man-ner by collaborating with other line depart-ments, other spheres of government partic-ularly the Provincial Department of SocialDevelopment and civil society.“We hope to increase youth involvement

and active citizenship by building the ca-pacity of youth organisations and leaders tobecome agents in their own developmentwho make meaningful contributions totheir communities“We know that gangsterism and sub-

stance abuse is rife in many communities. And that the high unemployment rateamongst our youth increases their chancesof getting involved in dangerous activities.“It is therefore ourhope that by providing

added opportunities for Cape Town’s youngpeople, we will assist them to reach theirfull developmental potential and becomehealthy and happy adults who are able tocontribute significantly and positively totheir communities,” she concluded.

‘Karate not just a sportbut also a way of living’TANDYLEE MARINUS

Discipline, confidence, speed and timing. These are some of the traits which mem-

bers of the Ryushin-Kan, School of KarateSouth Africa (Hunbo Dojo) in Eerste Rivershould possess. The dojo was established 15 years ago by

Sensei Coral Jacobs and her father, KyoshiElias Jacobs. As a 4th danblack belt andkarate instruc-

tor, her many achievements have been wellrewarded and show just howwell her deter-mination has paid off.“I love working with children and would

like to share my experience and expertisewith them so that they can apply it else-where,” said Coral.Coral considers her karate classes more

of a community service, steering the atten-tion of the youth away fromnegative attrac-tions.“Karate is not only a sport, it is a way of

helping and educating others,” she said. The highly respected sport, enables

young men and women to address them-selves instead ofwhat they portray to to oth-ers.“Karate is not just about kicking and

fighting,” said Coral.OnSaturday 4May, 15 of her students par-

ticipated in the Karate Association of West-ern Cape All Styles Tournament held at theBelhar Indoor Sports Arena. The Hunbo-Dojo Ryushin-Kan of Eerste

River produced eight students of which fivereceived gold and three bronze.“It was an amazing but nerve wracking

experience to compete against such experi-enced athletes, but I am very proud,” Coralsaid. This was the first time that the dojo of

Eerste River had competed at a competition

at this level.“Some doubted our skill, but to have stu-

dents get onto the mat, already made themwinners. It’s not just about the gold, but thefact that we achieved a goal,” she said.Finalistswho took part at the tournament

represented theWesternCapeat theNation-al All Styles Championship on 17 and 18May in Durban.Coral received a first place, gold medal

and qualified for the zone six champion-ships inNamibia at the endof June. Shewasalso elected as captain for theWestern Capeteam.Coral speaks about preparing for compe-

titions as a mental, physical and fitnessjourney which is endured for two hours aweek. Her students are dedicated to putting in

extra hours to ensure that they are wellequipped for upcoming competitions.“Every bit of training is important for

them and they’ve learned that hard workpays off,” Coral said. The core reason forwhy she opened adojo

was to curb the ongoing bullying experi-enced among the youth. She highlights that it is not only a sport

but home and school, teaching them the ba-sic principles of becoming a better person.“The sport encourages children to get rid

of their fear of being bullied and to gain con-fidence. Although fighting does not solveeverything,” Coral said. She encourages her students to practise

their skills in a controlledmanner and onlywhen necessary.“They need only sting their rivals with a

bit of pain and then walk away the betterperson,” she concluded.V Anyone who would like to attend lessons can contact Coral Jacobs on 082 444 1765 for more information.

‘It’s so quiet’trapped in asilent worldANDRÉ BAKKES

Whenhermother arrived at themotorcycleaccident scene, Tascha Olieslager was sur-rounded by paramedics. The distraught Michele ignored her in-

jured husband and ran straight towardsTascha.Paramedics tried to calm her down and

said that her daughter was concussed, be-cause she couldn’t hear anything. At that frantic moment Tascha looked up

to her mother and said: “I don’t want to dieMommy...”Michele just yelled over and over again:

“She’s not concussed! She’s deaf!”This strong and determinedwoman, who

never stepped back from a fight on behalfof the 22-year-old Tascha, couldn’t holdback the tears any longer while she re-counted the tale toTygerBurger. Shewouldcome to depend on her fighting spirit in themidst of the coming tempest.Table View’s Olieslagers need to raise

R338 000 for a cochlear implant for Tascha.Various fundraisers have, to date, not

even dented that exorbitant amount, butthe eventual benefit of this implant willgive credence to the saying: “Every step isworth it and every step is worth the stepit took to get there.”Tascha was born with limited hearing,

but her parents only discovered this aftera year and a half. Michele elaborates: “Shewasat a daymother andwhen Iwent to pickher up the daymothermade a joke and said‘We lost Tascha today.’ Apparently she wascalling and calling her, but she couldn’tfind her. She finally found her behind thecurtains by the sliding door. The daymoth-er said to me that I should take Tascha forsome tests.”Soon after it was discovered that Tascha

was almost completely deaf. She was twoyears oldwhen she got her first hearing aid.Her condition has deteriorated over theyears and now she has no hearing in herleft ear and less than 50 % in her right ear.Yet, when her hearing aid broke last year,Tascha had to cope with a deathly silencefor four days...“She cried... It was horrible... Once you

have sound and it’s completely taken awayfrom you it’s horrendous,” says Michele.Tascha adds slowly and laboriously: “It’s

hard to explain to someone how it is... It’sso very quiet... One only hears loudbangs...”As fate would have it, the broken hearing

aid forced Tascha to go to Netcare Blaauw-berg Hospital and there a doctor toldMichele that a cochlear implant could im-prove her daughter’s hearing ten-fold.“I don’t want to be six foot under when

Tascha goes completely deaf. This implantcould open so many doors for her! We can’tfind her a job... She wants to be an eventsand wedding planner, but she can’t do itwithout the implant. I tell people that she’sgot a heart of gold. She’s stunning! She willbend over backwards to help someone! Tas-cha wants to get out of these four walls...Shewants to go out into the big world... Butno-one will give her that chance,” saysMichele before concluding that there arevarious fundraisers that she’s planning.V Contact Michele on 078 703 5371 or go to websitewww.tascha.co.za for more information.

There’s good news on two fronts for musicfans going to The Whispers concert nextweek. The first part of that good news is that it

will save you somemoney because the tick-et prices have dropped for their perform-ance at His People Centre in Parow.Promoter Calvin Peters says that this de-

cision was made to allow as many of theirfans as possible to get the chance to see thisgroup in action.“People who have already bought a ticket

will be refunded the difference, and theycan just go to their nearest Computicket,”he said. The other part of the good news is that

some icons in the entertainment businesswill be the opening act for them.Vernon Castle’s Legends Band featuring

Ian Smith on trumpet, Allou April on gui-tar, SammyWebber on bass, Bjorn Petersenon drums and Johnny Williams on key-boardswill be in action after some very suc-cessful appearances around town in recentweeks.Castle was very excited about this move

and feels that the group will give the audi-ence just what it wants to warm themup forthe main act. This singer, known by many as the “Al

Jarreau” of South Africa needs very littleintroduction to local fans with a career thatspans from performing in cabarets in thelegendary Goldfinger Lounge as a teenager

to forming some of the top groups of the 70sand 80s like Free-Wind and Feather.“We’re looking forward to this gig,” he

said.“Our fanswill see another side ofwhatwe

can do when it comes to a concert situationlike this.”V Booking for the concert is at Computicket.

The roses have been blooming at RosewoodPrimary in Bonteheuwel for 50 years, andare still going strong. One of themajor strengths that the school

is proud of, is that teachers tend to staythere, with seven of them at the school formore than 30 years.Principal Fahema Meyer is one of them

with 37 years at the school, and she pointedout that the foundation for the prestige ofthe school was laid down with its first prin-cipal, the late Abdullah Brown when thedoors of the school opened in 1963.“He served the school for 15 years and un-

der his proficient leadership, the characterand ethos of the school was established,”she said.“In 1978, he was succeeded by William

Truter who continued to build on and con-solidate the structures that were put inplace, and he stayed with the school untilhis retirement in 1995, proving that longevi-ty that we have at this school.”Meyer, who took over the reins in 2010,

felt that what works at the school is thattheyareblessed tohavededicated, loyal andcommitted teachers who want only the bestfor their learners.“These educators always believed and

still believe that each child is special. Theycontinually strive to develop the child holis-tically, thus they arrange regular educa-tional excursions to places of interest, aswell as special activities in which learners,

their parents and the community partici-pate.“Part of our success is that we are in-

volved with extra-mural activities thatrange from arts and culture with participa-tion in various music and dance pro-grammes, to sport andvarious environmen-tal programmes.”The school also plays an important part

in the community which surrounds it.They participate in anti-drug and anti-

crime campaigns, organise marches forpeace and human chains to promote safetyin the area.“Our learners regularly visit the Lily-

haven Home for the Aged where they inter-act with the senior citizens and hand outfruit baskets,” added Meyer.Theyhave anumber of events planned for

the rest of the year to celebrate but theywillbe kicking it off on Saturday 8 June with aAnniversary Back to School dance that willbe held in the hall of Modderdam HighSchool. There will also be a reunion high tea in

June, a talent show featuring learners inSeptember, a debutante ball in October anda thanksgiving service in November.Tickets for the celebration on 8 June are

R30 with entertainment provided by ex-learners from the school. It will be starting at 15:00 and you can

bring your own platters.V For more information about the celebration callthe school on 021 694 7790, Patricia Arries on 072392 7321 or Charlene Amos on 072 19 444 02.

I feel people need to respect thebays at shopping centres forwhat they are. Each time I try to park in the

moms and tots parking bayswith my new baby, I see thatreps and other people park inthese bays. Even governmentbranded cars. I have spoken tothese people and told them thatyou need to be either be apensioner or a mom with a kid,to be able to park there. What they don’t understand

is that one has a pram, andnumerous baby goods thataccompany bringing a tot to amall. You also want to avoidthem being in wind or rain, especially newborns. What really irks me is when

people other than moms andpensioners, park here, like lazyhousewives with teens, repswho just “pop in”, etc, and yousee folk park there and there isno kid in the car.

Chilli Boys chipper about their league raceTHOMAS CAROLUS

ChippaUnited secured their place in theAb-sa Premier League play-offs when they cameback from a goal down to beat AmaZulu 2-1at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturdayafternoon. It was a result that ensured theChilli Boys

have a say in their own destiny, with achance of survival via the promotion/rele-gation play-offs.“We’ve done everything we could,” the

Chippa United coach Mark Harrison said.“Our last six games, we’ve won three and

drew three and I don’t think you can ask formore.“In the end that’s only enough to take us

to the play-offs but with the confidence andthe character in that squad, we’ve got everychance of staying in the PSL now.’’Chippa United will now join the second

and third placed National First Divisionclubs in a three team league style competi-tion that will decide who the 16th team is innext year’s Absa Premier League.Harrison added that they will now go all

out towin the play-off and retain their statusin the top flight league, with theEnglishman

banking on their form and experience tokeep them in the top league.Usuthu took an early lead through Bonga-

ni Ndulula, but the Cape based side repliedafter the break through two well taken pen-alties from substitute Brent Carelse. The opening goal arrived in the fourth

minute when Njabulo Manqana burst intothe box from the left before forcing a lowsave from Tashrique Goldman; Issa Sarrthen tried to clear the lines, but Ndululawasable to deflect the ball into the net. However, theCape side cameback into the

match three minutes into the second half

when they were awarded a penalty as Wil-liam Twala was brought down by TapuwaKapini in the box.Carelse who had come on for Welcome

Qalanto at half-time, stepped up to take thespot kick and calmly slotted the ball into thebottom right corner, sending Kapini thewrong way.The visitors were then awarded another
