Police are planning new strategies toput a stranglehold on gang activities inlocal communities.

In theWestern Cape, SAPS have launchedOperation Combat where the police will usetheir generals to take on the generals in thegang culture.Launching the initiative last week Major-

General Jeremy Vearey said that it was thefirst time generalswould be assigned to fightthe gang problem.

Street level“This is generals taking on generals who

have the experience on street level to combatand take them down,” he said.

“This timewewill concentrate on a name,we will concentrate on that person 24 hoursa day, it’s relentless and consistent.”The new campaign would also tackle high

flyers and corrupt police officers.According to police findings, one of the

most notorious gangs in the city, the 28s, hadbeen operating for 200 years, with policeachieving little success in disbanding them.

Denise Brand, has been hosting meetingswith various stakeholders to outline thestrategies that police would be using to fightthe problems that gangs are causing in thearea.At a meeting with the religious fraternity

in the area she presented statistics gatheredin the area over the past few months.“We want to show the community that we

are serious about tackling this problem andwe feel that the church can play a big rolein helping us to get rid of gangs and theirinfluences in the community.“They must encourage their congrega-

tions to become part of this initiative byworking with police to root out the drughouses, the drug dealers which is all part ofthe problem of the gang culture on the CapeFlats.“Wehavealready identified individuals in

the community who are part of the problemandwehavea strategy inplace tomake themknow that we are aware of them. With thesestrategies the churcheswill beworkingwith

us to hold services in front of their houses,to have soup kitchens there, so that theywillleave or stop their activities,” she said.While a quick survey of public opinion re-

vealed that it was high time that such an ini-tiative was done with churches, many stillfeel that the root cause of these problems arenot being tackled.“Whyareour childrenattracted tobecome

gangsters,” asked Adrian van der Heuwelfrom Belhar.

New Eerste River clinic will play vital role

The sewerage pipelines in Kuils Riverwill be upgraded today, according to amedia release issued by the City of CapeTown.The city’s water and sanitation de-

partment will replace a 500 m stretch ofsewerage pipeline along Sunbird SouthRoad in SunbirdPark,withhigh densitypolyethylene pipes.These pipes are more durable and

have a lifespan of 50 years or more.This forms part of the city’s proactive

approach to replacing ageing pipes toprevent bursts and breakages.The pipeline, which runs between

Nooiensfontein and Pheasant Roadsalong Sunbird South Road, will also be

upgraded from the current 150 mm to300 mm diameter in anticipation of thefuture development in Happy Valley.This project will take approximately

30 days to complete.Motorists who travel along Nooiens-

fontein Road to access Sunbird Park viaSunbird South Road are warned thatthis road will be closed from this morn-ing for the duration of the project.Traffic in the area will be diverted to

the Stellenbosch Arterial Road duringthis period. Arrangements will be madeto ensure that residents of SunbirdSouth Road who are directly affected bythe project have access to their proper-ties.

The Geneva Crisis Centre in Eerste Riverhopes to bring light into the communitywhich it has served for 10 years.The centre, which was formerly the Old

FaureGirls’ school, is the property of publicworks but has had to deal with various ob-stacles, including being frequently vandal-ised.It was then that Geneva Klaasen stepped

into the building and saw the need for a cri-sis centre to accommodate abused womenand children.Although the centre does not belong to

her, other entities are making use of thepremises without paying rent.Overseas companies eventually came for-

ward and provided funding for the centre tobe started.An over abundance of residents staying

at the centre, has made it difficult to be ableto provide for the 56 single mothers andtheir children, who call it their safe haven.

On 1 May 2011, it celebrated its 10th yearof service to the community.Councillor Gordon Thomas of Ward 16

hoped to bring the centre back into the lightof the community.“I feel because it is public works property

it can be used by small businesses as well,or as a haven for the homeless, but shouldbe done under proper administration,” saidThomas.The children whose laughter and faces

roam around the playground is enough tobrighten up the hearts of many, but theyneed toys, food and other funding.Many initiatives are set to be launched in

order to improve the current state of thecentre, such as the need for an administra-tion building.Geneva Klaasen said: “We need to get

busy with projects for the centre. Only twoof the 56 women living here are employed,but they are all women who can do a lot andhave skills.”Geneva, whose community work started

13 years ago in the Blue Downs communityfound the centre necessary after childgrants were stopped in 2000.Together with her husband, they visited

Pollsmoor prison and did a survey on singlemothers in the Malibu area, thus The Gene-va Crisis Centre transpired.She hopes to start a bakery, which will be

fully operated by the centre providing la-bour to the women living on the premises.“People sometimes forget the community,

I would like to put up a trust for the GenevaCentre and invest in the community but Idon’t want to see children on the street beg-ging,” she said.Geneva hopes to expand not only in the

Eerste River area but to operate in everyother community where it is possible, espe-cially to assist single parents.Councillor Thomas highlighted that this

will grab the attention of theMinister of So-cial Development and assist in puttingEerste River on the map, by bringing somefinality to The Geneva Crisis Centre.

There’s lots of local action on the bill for thisyear’s Cape Town International Jazz Festi-val, kicking off on 5 April.

While there is great expectation for someof the international acts like guitarist Nor-man Brown’s collaboration with Kirk Wha-lum and Rick Braun, violinist Jean Luc-Pon-ty, Steve Turre, Jack DeJohnette, and voca-list Gregory Porter, some local legends willbe making their mark on the music this year.

Pride of place can really go to sax man Don-vino Prins, who runs the Delft Music Acade-

my, who will be collaborating with bassistJonathan Rubain, from Hanover Park, for anappearance at the main event. They will beat the main event on Friday 5 April.

On the Saturday night of the festival localartists featured will include Claire Phillips,Jimmy Dludlu as well as the Rheza KhotaQuartet with some magical Bebop sounds.

Subsistence farmers angry at city plan for TRATANDYLEE MARINUS

Along the Old Faure Road in Eerste River,covered by a wall of trees, plots of smallshacks are neatly bordered alongside thisonce notorious road.

These shacks are home to farmers whomake a day to day living from their cropsand cattle, but have grown bitter and unhap-py about their wellbeing in the community.They feel they are forgotten.

This is because the City of Cape Town hasheld meetings, at Spurwing Primary School,in Electric City, to develop the land into aTemporary Relocation Area (TRA).

The establishment of the TRA is necessarybecause it is provincial land on which these

farmers cultivate, and it has not been specif-ically earmarked for the type of farming tak-ing place.

“As a result the residents of Electric Citywere not pleased about the idea, they feltthat if a TRA were to be built, that it wouldbring down the value of their property,” saidCouncillor Gordon Thomas.

Various obstacles have contributed to thedevelopment of a TRA, such as the watersupply which runs through the area beingabused, therefore the Department of Waterhas put the water supply down to a trickle.

“I was called in and we addressed the is-sue, and it came about that many farmerswere connected illegally,” said Thomas.

Although other areas are also demanding

housing, unhappiness was felt by many ofthe farmers because of the state in whichtheir farms are and that they are being takenadvantage of.

Craig Jonkers, chairperson of the iThem-ba farms organisation has expressed hisconcern and disappointment, and feels thatthey have been left out.

“We are not people who were forgotten, weare people who were written off,” said Jonk-ers.

Jonkers, who became unemployed, visitsthe farms on a regular basis providing jobopportunities for those who cannot make aliving.

They take part in chores which are donein and around the farms providing for their

families with the little that they earn.“I must give to you so that you can give.

I provide milk and food, but it must bestopped because people want everything forfree,” said Jonkers.

Jonkers does not agree with the idea tomake use of the land as a TRA, as this willcause much inconvenience and discomfortin terms of space.

“It’s not that we don’t want it to be a TRA,but they should first place us on a differentplace and then develop the TRA,” he said.

He teaches mostly women who come fromthe Eerste River and Macassar area, how towork in the garden.

“I feel we should teach people these thingsso that they can make a living,” he said.

A grapevine in an Elsies River garden isproviding a rich harvest for the first timein many years.

Never mind about “Hearing it throughthe Grapevine” as Marvin Gaye once sang,a few strong words to the vine in the gardenof the Page family in Southern Cross Streethas yielded results.

Bronwin Page explained that a vinegrowing in their yard was becoming a nui-sance and husband Gaylord was on theverge of cutting it all down.

“It kept on growing over the washinglines, and every year there were no grapes,”she said.

“I really did not want to cut it down be-cause my grandfather planted it more than30 years ago.

“My husband then decided to give it onemore chance, and spoke to the vines tellingit that if it did not produce grapes this year,it would be gone.

“It must have worked because we havehad the most beautiful bunches of grapesthis year, and it has become in demand withfamily and friends as bunches ripen.”

Afterwards she admitted that anotherreason for the good harvest could be morethan the “talking to” from Gaylord.

“We had a visit from an uncle from Rob-ertson, and he did some quick pruning forus when he had a look at it.

“While this could be the logical explana-tion, we still prefer the version that thevines were worried about Gaylord’s warn-ing to them,” she laughed.

But, while the jury is still out on the ex-planations, the family is enjoying the fruitsof their vines.

speaks about her daughter’s strength andcourage.Brooke, who was diagnosed with Guil-

lain-Barré syndrome last year, started highschool this year at The Paarl school and isdoing very well.Guillain-Barré syndrome is a disorder in

which the body’s immune system attackspart of the peripheral nervous system.The Paarl school is situated in Bracken-

fell which caters for children with specificlearning and physical disabilities.Hermother says she lives by her school’s

motto: “I’m not disabled, I’m differentlyabled.”Roslyn says that Brooke’s strength is evi-

dent every single day. “When she comeshome from school she tells me how luckyshe is in comparison with the kids at herschool.“I really look up to my daughter,” she

says.Brooke has recently been discharged

from rehab.She usually has four-hour sessions at the

rehab facility in an attempt to increase themovement of her limbs.She now has movement in her legs and

is able to brush her teeth and hair. Hermother says she allows her to do things onher own even when she struggles.Roslyn explains that the doctors said that

it would take approximately two to threeyearsuntil Brooke is able towalk again, butshe is starting to feel movement.As Roslyn bursts out with laughter she

says that her determined little daughtertold her “that no one is going to tell herwhen she can walk”.Last year during the exams at Brooke’s

previous school, Kenridge Primary, she ob-tained more than 70 % in her subjectswhich included English, Afrikaans, mathsand science.
