In the past three months various of these incidents were reported where items such as cell phones, laptops and electric tools were stolen out of vehicles. “Vehicles all over the Durbanville town area are being targeted. Most of these vehicles are parked near the shopping area, business premises, school functions and events,” said Lieutenant Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for the Durbanville police. Remote jamming devices or the breaking of a small window are used to gain entry to the vehicle. The most prominent streets that are being targeted are Wellington Road, Oxford Street and Chenoweth Street, Rhode said. VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1

Tog sien ons geen werklike, implimenteer-

bare aksieplan van die nasionale polisiebe-

stuur omhierdie toename (inmisdaad) te be-

me in huisrowe (14,9%). Plato het ges die

    departement van gemeenskapsveiligheid

sal egter aanhou om vennootskappe met ge-

    meenskapsorganisasies, nie-regeringsorga-

    nisasies, asook buurtwagte en gemeen-

    skapspolisiringsforums te snoer.

    Diemisdaadwerklikheid in die provinsie

kan nie onaangeraak gelaat word nie. Dis n

    werklikheid waarin die nasionale polisie

    voldoende polisiehulpbronne moet verse-

    ker, het hy ges.

Die Kaapse Kwiltgenot, of Laslapgilde, hou

eersdaags n uitstalling in die Bellville-bibli-

    oteek se kunsgalery.

Die kleurvolle opening sal opVrydag 9Ok-

    Call to sterilise domestic

    animals: Local animal activists

    involved with the Change For

    the Better Foundation and

    Tears, joined a march to

    Parliament on Saturday where

    a memorandum was handed to

government in a call to, among

    other things, legislate compul

    sory sterilisation of all domestic

    animals. From left are Leandi

    Everts, Melissa van Wyk, Brenda

    Kerr, Natalie Atkinson, Annelie

van Wyk and Mandy Store. The

    foundation works in areas such

    as Brackenfell, Kraaifontein,

    Durbanville, Kuils River, Bellville

    and township areas in Walla

    cedene, Scottsdene, Bloekom

    bos and Fisantekraal.

    A

    police captain from Kraaifontein,

stationed at the Table View police

    station, appeared in thedocksof the

Kuils River Magistrates Court last week

on a charge of defeating the ends of jus-

    tice.

According to a statement sent to the

media by the provincial police depart-

ment, the 43-year-old police woman alleg-

edly interfered during an arrest in Scotts-

    dene on Saturday 26 September.

Provincial police say at about 19:30,

    Kraaifontein police officers were busy

with an arrest for possession of an unli-

    censed firearm.

While they were busy a police captain

fromTable View SAPS arrived in her pri-

vate vehicle accompanied by an un-

known male in civilian clothes. She was

dressed in full police uniform, the state-

    ment read.

    The captain reportedly demanded po-

lice release the suspect andwhen they re-

fused, she pulled the suspect free and in-

    structed him to run away.

Officers managed to recover the fire-

arm from the suspect, who was later re-

arrested, and it was established that it

was stolen in Manenberg last month.

The police woman was arrested at the

Table View police station on 30 Septem-

    ber.

    According to a police spokesperson,

she was duly suspended from duty and

    disciplinary procedures have been insti-

    tuted.

The case is being investigated by the

    Hawks.

Diederik Viljoen (59), n komiteelid en al

19 jaar lid van die Bellville-filatelieklub, se

    belangstelling in selversameling is askind

    Groot rol

    Montgolfier-broersmet n eerste ballonvlug

geslaag het. Daarna het talle proefnemings

    gevolg met bemande ballonne. Gedurende

    die Anglo-Boereoorlog het Britse magte

    verkenners in geankerde ballonne opge-

stuur om boereposisies te bespied. Beheer-

    winding gesorg. Hul landingsplekke was

groot staaltorings waaraan die puntige bal-

    lonne se neus geanker is.

Maar die gasgevulde ballonne was ook n

    veiligheidsrisiko, endie eindevandie groot

Zeppelins is ingelui toe n verwoestende

brand die Hindenburg-ballon in 1936 binne

minute verwoes het met tragiese lewens-

    verlies.

    bladsye.

    Viljoen se gunsteling-versameling is eg-

    meen hy.

spesifieke veld. Dit sluit in tematiese versa-

    T

o ensure better road safety for school

children, the City of Cape Town will

provide part time traffic attendants on

condition that the various local subcouncils

fund their salaries with respective ward

    funds.

A report informing subcouncils to this ef-

fect was tabled at the September meeting of

subcouncil 2, and although local councillors

are in agreement that these additional safety

measures be taken, they are adamant that

salaries should not be allocated from ward

funds, but rather from the central city bud-

    get.

A ward fund is allocated to each ward

    councillor,with thepurpose for that council-

lor to support and initiate micro local pro-

jects such as park beautification for in-

    stance.

The aforesaid report states that a large

number of children need towalk to and from

school each day, and that parents are not al-

ways available to accompany their children.

There are a number of requests for the

City to employ part time traffic attendants

to assist childrenat school crossings, howev-

er this is budget reliant. If a subcouncil so

wishes, it can provide funding for part time

attendants who can then be deployed to a

crossing of the subcouncils choice, read

the report, compiled by the safety and secu-

    rity directorate.

The projected amount for the cost of one

part time attendant would come to R40 721

for a period of 12 months. This was calculat-

ed at an hourly rate of R38 for four hours per

day over 232 days and includes uniform and

    equipment.

    Marian Nieuwoudt, ward councillor from

    Brackenfell, and Simpiwe Nonkeyizana,

ward councillor for Wallacedene, both ques-

tioned the sensibility of this proposal.

As it is, ward allocations are the smallest

funds, yet the City insists that the funds be

    taken from here, said Nieuwoudt.

Itmakes sense that services such as these

be paid by the Citys operational budget and

that ward funds should not carry this addi-

    tional pressure, he added.

    Uponamedia enquiry byTygerBurger, ex-

ecutive director for safety and security,

Richard Bosman, said the Citys safety and

security directorate has a limited budget.

He said that the report should be viewed

    as a proposal only.

We tabled the various options available

to subcouncils in view of our limited bud-

    get, he said.

    However, upon scrutinising the report,

TygerBurger could not find these options

    referred to.

    A

    lmost immediately after an article

was published showing a CCTV cam-

era thief, a rape victim came forward

to identify him as her attacker.

This was the string of events after Tyger-

Burger published a picture of a man the

Bellville police were looking for in connec-

tion with the theft of the camera (Suspect

sought by police, 23 September). A clear

image of a man in a blue hoodie top staring

right into the camera was captured just be-

fore he made off with the equipment.

    OnWednesday 30 September the employ-

er of a 28-year-old nannywhowas assaulted

under the Bill Bezuidenhout bridge on 17

August, contacted us to say the victim had

identified the man as her attacker.

    Her employer alertedTygerBurger: Just

to let you know that [the nanny] has identi-

fied her rapist as the man in the article in

your newspaper on 23 September stealing

the video camera, the employer wrote.

I would just like to thank your paper for

    keeping the community informed about

crime in the area. This has led to a break-

through in her case. It is interesting, as he

told her that this is his area and he seems

to be following through with his statement

by targeting the area, she said.

    Captain Fienie Nimb, spokesperson of

    the Bellville police was contacted.

The suspect had been identified for

stealing the CCTV camera and was due to

appear in court that same morning (last

    Wednesday). Then we received TygerBur-

gersmessage bringing us into contact with

the rape victim who positively identified

him as her attacker and immediately left

    for the magistrates court.

The man now faces the additional rape

    charge.

    Thief identified as rapist

hoeveelheid vullis by die groot sentrale mu-

    nisipale stortingsterreine.

eerste keer in Augustus 2011 beskikbaar ge-

stel in woongebiede oos van Tygerberg-heu-

wels, oos van Bill Bezuidenhoutweg tot by

Old Oakweg, en ook noord van Old Oakweg

tot by Kraaifontein. Kraaifontein, die Joos-

    tenbergvlakte-kleinhoewes en plase verder

noord is nie hierby ingesluit nie, sVander

Walt.

Dt sluit in die skeiding van vullis by for-

    mele woonomgewings waar drie alternatie-

we die afgelope paar jaar ingestel is.

Van der Walt s gedurende die 2014/15-

boekjaar, wat op 30 Junie geindig het, het

die deurskynende plastieksakke en die vul-

lisdromme met groen deksels wat slegs n

As I lay myself down in the

comfort of a warm clean bed, a

    fifteen-year-old boy lays his

head down in a self-built shack

with only the comfort of a

filthy pillow and a worn out

    blanket.

As I feel the satisfaction of a

full belly, he feels the hunger

    pains.

I close my eyes and smile,

for I know tomorrow I am well

    provided for. He lies awake,

    thinking how his family will

    have something to eat tomor-

    row.

    After witnessing the effects

of poverty firsthand, I now ask

    myself a very different and

    honest question how can I

    make a difference?

    I truly believe a small

    difference is better than no

    difference, and with that

thought I realise it could have

been my son in that shack.

I would never have been able

    to comprehend the difficulties

    and sadness linked to the

    extreme effects of poverty if

    not witnessing it for myself.

    One could not imagine that

    only a stones throw away

from the place I call home

there are the voices of those in

need crying out for a little

mercy, for a helping hand, for

just a piece of bread to console

    their hunger pains.

    Meeting a mother of four

    children made me realise how

much I have to be thankful for.

    After being invited into her

home, it made me look at my

life in a deeper sense, and I

realised that life should not be

    taken for granted.

    I am deeply saddened after

    witnessing her family in such

    distress because of poverty. As

I look at her children their

    innocent little faces smiling at

me I am touched by their

child-like beauty, but as I look

beyond their smiles I see the

    effects of malnutrition on their

    little bodies.

It makes me want to cry

because as a mother I am

    What canwe do

    to really help?

Re. To mow or not to mow,

    TB, 30 September. Neatness

    goes against nature.

Never in the 35 years that I

have lived in Aurora, have I

seen such a diversity of wild

    flowers as during this Spring.

I tweeted the City of Cape

    Town with a photo, thanking

    them for not mowing.

    In previous years, swathes of

    beautiful Aandblommetjies

were mowed down and did not

    reappear.

    This year they emerged in

    patches again.

    The bees and other insects

have been loving the masses of

Cape Weed. Bees need a wide

    variety of plants for foraging.

    Grasses and wild flowers

    provide habitat for insects and

    food for birds.

    By poisoning and mowing we

    remove an important part of

    Thanks forNOT

    mowing this time

Re. To mow or not to mow

(TB, 30 September): I am sure

    many people will agree with

    Belinda Walkers response. I

walk my dogs down the R300

    waste ground in Goedemoed

and have been delighted to see

    the wonderful array of wild

flowers. The fact that the grass

has not yet been cut is a

    tribute to the municipality

    respecting the little bit of

nature that is left in the area.

It would be a tragedy for us

    who venture into the remaining

open spaces in our suburb if we

were to be denied the pleasure

of these flowers and the bene-

    fits to the environment of

letting them flower, as for most

of the year this area is a

    barren place scarred by anti-so-

    cial activities.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Ander sake in

    land vereis

    ook di passie

    Ons Suid-Afrikaners moet ons prioriteite

regkry. Dt besef n mens weer eens

wanneer jy die massa-histerie oor die

    Wreldbeker-rugbytoernooi om jou

    ervaar.

    Groot mans raak huilerig, gramstorig

of doen blywende sielkundige letsels op

en vroue skree ten hemele en slinger hul

    hekelwerk rond.

    landwyd soos masjiengeweervuur in

    rugbymal-huishoudings as dinge die slag

glimlag breed. Ons gaan met ons Spring-

bok-truie werk toe, drink groen koel-

ander (veel ernstiger) sake in ons land

    ook s vurig raak nie?

    Ons stryd teen armoede, werkloosheid,

misdaad en korrupsie, om maar net n

paar te noem, verdien meer as net n

jaarlikse optoggie of twee.

Summer is the perfect time to exercise in na-

ture and what better companions than our

    faithful canine friends.

    Jennifer Davies of Fisantekraal Animal

Welfare (FAW) says that all dogs need exer-

cise, although some are definitely couch po-

tatoes while others just love to be active.

    Choose activitieswith your dogs abilities

in mind some dogs are either uninterested

or unable to keep up with high-energy lifes-

tyles, such as dogs with flat faces, joint prob-

lems, or old dogs, she says.

Davies recommends that if your dog isnt

used to exercising, you should work your

way up and, if youre unsure, first consult

    your vet.

Never take puppies under a year for runs

or very long walks as they are still growing.

Overexercising can cause serious joint prob-

lems. Also, they should have all their vacci-

nations before they go out, she warns.

Walking your dog isnt just about exercise

its crucial bonding time. Its also the only

chance your dog gets to leave their yard, so

dont just drag them along. They need to sniff

things, mark territory, and take in every-

    thing.

Some people avoid walking their dogs be-

cause theyre naughty by pulling, bolting

and not listening, but this is easily remedied

    with basic training, she says.

On longer walks in warm weather, always

take a bowl and water, stick to shady areas,

do not walk on hot tar, andmonitor your dog

for signs of heat exhaustion, she says.

FAW has several wonderful dogs that are

    perfect for active people.

Nikita is the perfect companion for people

who love the outdoors and an active life. She

simply loves to run, and is an agile, strong,

and energetic dog. She likes other dogs and

    is used to children.

Lucky may look like a lap dog, but hes ac-

tually a high-energy, tough and highly intel-

ligent guy.He craves attention andwould lap

up the chance to receive some training. Hed

really enjoy outdoor activities, like hiking

and long walks in the fresh air.

All FAW dogs are sterilised, vaccinated

and dewormed, all of which is included in

their adoption fee of about R500 for adult

    dogs.

Stewart (18), n matriekleerling by Jan

Kriel-skool, en Charne (14), in graad 8 by

    Horskool Stellenberg, is verlede week

gekroon as 2015 se Mnr. Wes-Kaap en

    Mej. Jr. Tiener Wes-Kaap.

As

Stewart voeg by: Mense besef nie al-

net n koekie of n stokkielekker, is onbe-

    skryflik.

Die sibbe is ook betrokke by verskeie

    kleiner gemeenskapsprojekte soos Wild-

    life Pageants, n modelkompetisie wat

    binne kom.
