The mud burst out
through the paving.

A
mud eruption from underneath the
paving at the Ben Venuti complex in
DUrbanvale was the latest in the
thorny issues surrounding the controver-
sial new Clara Anna Fontein development.
The mud outburst, referred to as a frac-
out in engineering terms, occurred last
Wednesdaywhen the contractor Rambore, a
specialist in trenchless pipe and cable lay-
ing, used themethod of horizontal direction-
al drilling to lay a pipeline from the
construction site of Clara Anna Fontein
underneath the Vissershok Road to DUr-
banvale.
The body corporate of theBenVenuti com-
plex is now concerned about possible struc-
tural damage to the foundation of the com-
plex building and demanded an inspection
by a structural engineer.
The Clara Anna Fontein development
was, despite the drawn-out court cases over
yearspreceding theonset of construction, al-
so in a pickle earlier this year due to dust
pollution, wild animals roaming the con-
struction site and the unannounced cutting
of the water supply to DUrbanvale.
The pipelinewas laid underneathVissers-
hok Road to DUrbanvale for electricity ca-
bles to be linked with the substation oppo-
site Reddam House (previously known as
Chesterhouse School).
There are two substations in DUrban-
vale that need to be connected. No existing
sleeves were available underneath the road
and new sleeves had to be installed by thrust
boring, said Conrad Visser of Adenco, the
electrical engineering contractor.
The mud outburst occurred at the Ben Ve-
nuti complex at the entrance to DUrban-
vale, causing severe damage to the paving
on one side of the complex.
By last Friday muddy water was also run-
ning down venting holes in the basement of
the complex.

FROM PAGE 1
According to an incident report by Ram-
bore, they successfully completed a 95mm
x 75m pilot bore in various soil conditions.
Water was used in the process.
When they were about 75% into the back
ream, they noticed a frac-out inside Ben
Venuti complex.
Rambore struggled for about an hour to
get access into BenVenuti.Wewere only al-
lowed access when one of the residents no-
ticed our presence at the main gate.
The resident escorted Rambore to the
frac-out. Rambore immediately tried to get
hold of the letting agency to get information
regarding the body corporate of Ben Venuti
Complex.
We got hold of one of the trustees resid-
ing at 10 Ben Venuti, who gave permission
to work inside the premises of Ben Venuti
and to remove old locks from a side door for
easy access.
When we completed the 200mm back
reaming, we stopped all drilling work im-
mediately to clean up, according to the re-
port.
LastThursdaya clean-up crewwason site
to control and minimise mud spillage and
to accommodate Ben Venuti residents and
to explain what was going on.
Although theywere in the process of rein-
stating the paving, they were stopped.
George Sieraha, a trustee member of the
body corporate of Ben Venuti, said after
muddy water came out of the venting holes
in the basement, he instructed them to stop
any clean-up work so that an assessor can
come out to investigate the damage.
There can be structural damage which
can causeus problems later, he said toTyg-
erBurger.
We have also already alerted our insur-
ance company about possible damage, he
said.
A spokesperson from Rambore told Tyg-
erBurger the erf adjacent to the Ben Venuti
complex, where a catchment dam was tem-
porarily built to receive the mud effluent,
will be entirely cleaned up once the mud is
dry enough to be removed.
The damaged pavingwill also be repaired
as soon as a structural engineer has investi-
gated the site for structural damage, he
said.
According to the website www.hydro-
techndrc.com the method of horizontal di-
rectional drilling offers many advantages
over traditional trenching methods and ul-
timately reduces construction time and
costs.
According to entries in a brochure on the
website, it eliminates the need to cut roads
which is expensive to restore and to pro-
vide traffic diversions.
The muddy water that came through the venting pipes in the basement, concerns residents of the Ben Venuti complex about possible
structural damage.
A catchment dam was
created on an erf
adjacent to the Ben
Venuti complex in
DUrbanvale to receive
the mud effluent while
the pipeline was
installed underneath the
Vissershok Road.

ie eienaar van die Bloemendal-res-
taurant op die heuwel op die Bloe-
mendal-wynplaas buite Durbanville
waarvan sommige so lank gelede as 19
maande gelede gedoen is.
Die hofsaak sleep al sedert Maart 2014
voort nadat Spirito Trade 82, eienaars van
die plaas waarop die restaurant gele is,
aansoek by die Bellvillese siviele hof ge-
doen om n uitsettingsbevel nadat die res-
taurant onder meer versuim het om agter-
stallige huurgeld te betaal. Tradefirm se
huurooreenkoms is eers in Julie 2013 en la-
ter weer in Augustus 2014 beendig.
grond. Di eis is na die hooggeregshof oor-
gedra, omdat die eisbedrag die jurisdiksie-
perk van die landdroshof oorskry het. Hier-
die eis is later deur Tradefirm teruggetrek.
Spirito het intussen n teeneis ingedien
vir die uitsetting van Tradefirm, waarop
Tradefim n teeneis ingedien het om skade-
vergoeding van R50 000 per maand weens
Spirito se onregmatige inmenging met sy
besigheid; vergoeding van R9 860 miljoen
vir verbeteringe wat Tradefirm op die
huurperseel aangebring het, asook vergoe-
ding van sowat R4,85 miljoen vir die oorna-
me van die klandisiewaarde van Tradefirm
se restaurant.
In sy uitspraak verledeDinsdag 3Mei het
regter Andr Blignaut die uitsetting van
Tradefirm vanuit die restaurantperseel ge-
las. Hierdie bevel sal op 31 Julie in werking
tree met dien verstande dat Tradefirm die
bepalings van die bestaande huurkontrak
vanaf 3 Mei nakom onder meer die beta-
ling van huurgeld van R30 000 per maand.
Blignaut het ook Tradefirm se teeneis
van die hand gewys vir skadevergoeding
weens Spirito se beweerde onregmatige in-
Volgens Fred Botha namens Spirito be-
Freddie Turner, mede-
eienaar vandieBloemendal-restaurant, het
aanTygerBurger bevestig dat hulle teen die
uitspraak gaan appelleer.

T
he garden bench that was stolen in
front of the Durbanville Animal Hos-
pital on the night of Wednesday 20
April, found its way back.
Last week TygerBurger reported on the
stolen bench that has stood outside the
practice for more than 30 years.
A woman from Durbanville contacted
us and said she saw the picture in Tyger-
Burger and thought she had our bench. She
bought it from Cash Crusaders in Durban-
ville the previous week, says Jane Bezuid-
enhout, practice manager.
They laid a charge of theft at the Durban-
ville police station. They are liaising with
Cash Crusaders to try and trace the thief
who stole our bench, says Bezuidenhout.
We are very happy that our bench is
back, and we will be bolting it into the wall
for safety, Bezuidenhout says.
The woman, Rolena Palvi fromVierland-
en, who bought the bench for about R400,
will get her money back, promised Russell
Meredith, owner of Crash Crusaders.
The seller, amanwith a garden services
type of truck, came around andwe believed
his story that the client did not want the
bench anymore. Once he has been found
guilty, we can blacklist him at all our bran-
ches across the country.
This is bad for our reputation as we do
our outmost best not to buy stolen items
and demand proof of ownership with more
expensive items, he says.
Bench finds its way back
Warm donation: Carla Diener, a photographer from Durbanville, donated a total of 61
blankets to the children of the Durbanville Childrens Home last week. She heard about
the need at the home and collected the blankets with the help of friends and family.

he money raised with the
third annual Miggie Chal-
lenge on Wednesday 27 April
at the Paarl dam far exceeded ex-
pectations.
A total of R22 087was raisedwith
this fun event in which 189 anglers
took part. This years beneficiary
is Damian Wolf from Sun Valley,
Fish Hoek.
The Miggie Challenge was start-
ed in 2014 as anannual competition
to celebrate the life and positive
spirit of Stefan MiggieKing from
Brackenfell, as well as helping
thosewho suffer fromCysticFibro-
sis and similar life-threatening dis-
eases.
Miggie, who was a hero in fish-
ing circles, lost the battle to cystic
fibrosis in 2014 at the age of 21.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disor-
der that affects mostly the lungs,
but also the pancreas, liver, kid-
neys and intestine.
With the rules of the day includ-
ing stealing fish, exaggerating the
size of your catch and kissing your
first fish of the day, it was a fun
event enjoyed by all participants.
It was a spectacular day at the
dam, saysKalinOelofse fromDur-
banville, one of the organisers.
In 2014 an amount of R14 000 was
raised towards Miggie. Last year a
total of 67 anglers registered for the
competition, Oelofse says.
Then the amount of R17 000 was
raised in aid of the second benefici-
ary, Andries van der Merwe from
Boland Freshwater Angling Club.
The purpose of this competition

ie raaisel rondomdie vrektes van dui-
we het verdiep nadat ng n leser ge-
kla het oor die onverklaarblare vrek-
te van duiwe ook in hr woonbuurt.
n Leser, wat anoniemwou bly, het verle-
de week in n brief Lemoenduifies se vrek-
tes ontstel in TygerBurger van 4 Mei haar
kommer uitgespreek omdat sy sedert De-
sember verlede jaar gereeld dooie lemoen-
duifies in en om haar tuin by haar huis in
Boston vind. Net in April alleen is 22 dooie
duifies gevind, het sy geskryf. Volgens haar
vlieg voorhulle danweer grond toe val.
tortelduifies, in haar tuin by haar huis in
High Trees-weg vind. Volgens Watts het sy
reeds 41dooieduifies getel sedertDesember
verlede jaar hoofsaaklik jong duiwe. Ook
haar buurman het so vier of vyf dooie dui-
we gevind.
Henk Chalmers van Eagle Encounters by
Brigitte Bh-
mer, n diereverpleegsuster by die Klap-
As dit net
bleemwyer ervaarword. Dit kan ook tewy-
te wees aan n salmonella-infeksie, s sy.

Groep van vyf vriendinne
van Durbanville met vlyti-
ge breivingers het middel
verlede jaar begin om saam-saam
vir liefdadigheid te brei.
Onshet eers gebrei vir ander or-
ganisasies en net ons goedjies ge-
skenk, maar toe besef, as ons self
brei, kan ons dit mos self uitdeel
ook, vertel Annelize Jensen.
Hulle het toe die organisasie Ca-
ring 4 Kidz and Creatures gestig.
komende winter.
Hulle het kos, warm kombersies
en speelgoed met n projek ingesa-
mel en onlangs aan drie dierewel-
synsorganisasies geskenk.
MetKerstyd verlede jaar het hul-
le ook n Kerspartytjie vir 30 kin-
ders in Fisantekraal gehou.
Vanjaar wil die vriendinne
hulle is nou net drie, Jensen,
Carmen vanWyk enKelly Louden,
Winter Warmer Boxes bymekaar
maak.
sy by.
deborsel, tandepasta, seep, n was-
lappie, koekies, sneesdoekies en
Vicks.
Ons sal baie dankbaar wees vir
enige donasies of kontant ons sal
voorstoep is dit is mense so naby
aan Durbanville wat hulp nodig
het. En as een van ons gebreide ser-
pies of kombersies iemand diewin-
bly maak.

LEWENSKIEKIE
Three days of
paternity
leave a joke!
Ive had bags under my eyes for so long
that I named them.
Its no coincidence that theyre named
after my two toddlers Joshua and
Amlie.
Im writing this from the perspective of
a very involved and very tired father
who gets just as little sleep as his wife.
This weekend I went to a well-known
shopping centre in the northern suburbs
with my kids and were met by a very
adamant and somewhat sarcastic security
guard.
While I was unloading screaming child
number one, the guard marched towards
me and indicated that I was not allowed
to park there. He furiously pointed
towards the sign reading Moms & Tots.
The guard reasoned that I was clearly
not a mom, despite the exaggerated bags
under my eyes hanging so low that I
needed a bra.
I refused to move the car and flatly
ignored the man.
Yet, he had a point!
Im not a mom. So
why on earth are
there no Dads &
Tots parking
spaces?
Little did I know
my day was about
to go from bad to
worse.
Screaming child
number two had a
dirty nappy and
much to my
dismay I discov-
ered that the baby
changing area was located in the wom-
ens rest rooms.
These two issues are more than just a
personal gripe.
It affects every single dad, and even
more so every single single dad!
As if us poor souls dont have enough
on our plates already.
Its quite clearly a case of gross sexual
discrimination and tests a tired fathers
nerves to the extreme.
Someone with more energy needs to do
something about it.
And dont get me started on the differ-
ence between maternity and paternity
leave in South Africa!
A mother needs time to heal physically
and emotionally. In most cases she needs
to breastfeed every three hours, so they
obviously need to spend a long time at
home after giving birth.
A fathers role during this time is
nothing to scoff at, especially if he must
get up to go to work in the morning.
Three days of paternity leave is a joke.
Hear my bone-wearied chuckle. Andr

he Fisantekraal rail station will be up-
graded by the Passenger Rail Agency of
South Africa (Prasa) in the next year
at a cost of R6.5m.
Currently about 40 passengers board the
train and 400 passengers disembark the
train in the evening peak hour.
The rail station has been identified by
both the City of Cape Town and Prasa as a
rail station that is in need of a proper up-
grade.
This was in a report that served in front
of subcouncil 7 (Koeberg) at its last monthly
meeting in April.
The subcouncil requested the commis-
sioner of Transport for Cape Town (TCT) to
approach Prasa to discuss the possible up-
grade of the station. The upgrade could in-
clude the extension of the station platform,
the provision of sufficient lightning and the
provision of appropriate shelter.
It could also include ablution facilities, se-
curity offices, signage and fencing around
the facilities.
Currently the rail station platform shelter
and surrounding facilities are accessed
through an open gate west of the platform
and has a single track running through the
facilities.
Seating is provided on the platform, but
the material used for the seats has shown
signs of deterioration.
The shelter facilities are also incomplete
with no roofing.
According to the report the start of con-
struction is dependant on the successful
award of the tender, which would have been
in February and March this year.
Rail station to be upgraded
About 20 cyclists will be cycling 480km in
30 hours fromOudtshoorn toDurbanville
to raise funds and awareness for Fisan-
tekraal Animal Welfare (FAW).
The Fisantekraal Animal Welfare 10th
AnniversaryCycleChallengewill start in
Oudtshoorn on Saturday 21 May and end
in Durbanville the following day.
The goal is for each rider to represent
a R1000 sponsorship in order to raise
R20 000 for animal sterilisations in the
township. Riders pay their own way and
all donations go towards FAW.
By Sunday 1 May a total of R9 400 had
already been sponsored, but there are
still a few spaces available if more cy-
clists want to take part.
Some riders will cycle the entire dis-
tance in one go, while others will ride in
relay teams of two.
The tour is presented in association
with Adrenalin Bikes, and has been
planned by Durbie Dash organiser Neil
van Tonder and his wife, Belinda, who is
a FAW volunteer.
LandRoverN1 City is generously spon-
soring the use of two Land Rovers as sup-
port vehicles. Day Trippers Bicycle Tour
Company has donated the use of a 10-
berth trailer to transport bicycles.
The riders progresswill be followed on
FAWs Facebook page and on Instagram.

Enkelwingerdwyn kry trofee
stig. Daar is geen twyfel dat die uiterste
uitbeelding van n terroir, die Franse term
vir wynterrein, n enkelwingerdwyn is nie.
Die grond en klimaat van daardie win-
gerd staan uit as die regte kultivar daar ge-
plant is, verduidelik Marius Labuschagne
van Durbanville, stigter en projekleier. Die
ander trofe is vir die top-terroir-produ-
sent, top-wynlandgoed en top-wyngebied.
Benewens die trofe en nasionale wen-
ners van spesifieke kultivars en wynstyle,
word Suid-Afrika se topvyf-landgoedwyne
ook op di verhoog aangekondig. Nog n be-
Labuschagne. Volgens Carin Stemmet, SA-
WIS se bestuurder van sertifiseringsdien-
ste, is daar tot nou 829 enkelwingerdwyne
gesertifiseer sedert die 2005-oesjaar. Om te
kwalifiseer as n enkelwingerdwyn moet
die betrokke wingerd geregistreer wees.
Die afbakeningskomitee van die Wyn- en
Spiritusraad is verantwoordelik vir di re-
gistrasies. Slegswynewat gesertifiseer is as
neem. Die sluitingsdatum vir inskrywings
is 21 Junie. Die monsters vir beoordeling
moet op 23 en 24 Junie afgelewer word en
die toekenningsfunksie is op 27 Julie.

T
hey dont have much, but
they still have a body that
can do amazing things.
This is one of the key lessons
Hanne La Cour says the ActionAr-
te Foundation tries to teach the
children they work with.
The organisation has been using
circus performance skills to help
empower young people, especially
in the Hanover Park community,
and non-circus folk will get a
glimpse of their non- traditional
acts when the foundations core
group performs at Trash Cabarets
Carnival of Dreams at Hillcrest
Quarry on Saturday 14 May.
The foundation was started by
Hanne,who is originally fromDen-
mark, and Marlin Roos, a second
generation circus performer who
has been training since the age of
seven.
Hanne says Marlin has always
been interested in learning, teach-
ing and giving back to the commu-
nity of Hanover Park through free
classes. She, on the other hand,
comes from a background of thea-
tre and social projects and when
the two met, they decided to com-
bine their skills.
I was fascinated by the circus,
Hanne says, so she started to train
and travelled with Marlin to Spain
where they spent two years learn-
ing how to use circus training as
a teachingmethod. They started of-
fering workshops soon after re-
turning in January 2014. Living
in Hanover Park is hard.
Hanne highlights issues like
gang violence and lack of involve-
ment from parents and says Ac-
tionArte connectswith children by
keeping them off the streets, in-
spiring them to be creative and
teaching them about the impor-
tance of education. By teaching
children what their bodies are ca-
pable of, they also instil a sense of
positivity and teach children that
they can choose a better life.
The foundations teachers use
juggling, for example, to teach chil-
dren concentration and reason.
To keep the balls in the air you
have to want it and have to find the
rhythm and coordination. They
also use the juggling to teach little
ones mathematics. While they
dont go into the full mathematical
theory behind the art, they do use
it to teach things like times tables.
Children who cant sit still are
encouraged to train in acrobatics
to use their energy positively.
The foundations core group is
made up of performers from the
community who have been trained
as teachers and professional per-
formers. Besides training the
youth and professional classes for
anyone interested in becoming a
circus performer or get fit, they al-
so perform regularly, often at cor-
porate events, to keep the founda-
tion running and expanding.
ActionArte also raises funds and
reaches out to the community
through their Sunday Funday aft-
ernoons at their base in Epping
where families are invited to ex-
plore their circus world.
Hanne will be one of the artists
performing atTrashCabaretsCar-
nival of Dreams on Saturday
where shell be performingher spe-
ciality: hanging by her hair.
Themulti-cultural cabaret event
will bring togetherburlesquedanc-
ers, acrobats, jugglers, aerial art-
ists, roaming characters, fire danc-
ers and musicians in a festival to
ignite imaginations.
Participating groups will in-
