From Our Pastor...

Abundance As we celebrate our Oktoberfest this weekend, it is easy to see an abundance of parishioners giving generously of their time, talent, and treasure. There is an abundance of volunteers, an abundance of fun among parishioners both new and long-time, and an abundance of hospitality as our parish showcases to the bigger community how much of a family we are at St. Clare! Thank You! This weekend is one of those very proud moments for me as the pastor...as I see all of you pitching in and being an active part of the family. This sort of ‘working together’ is what was drilled into us when I was growing up as a middle child of 8. We were never allowed to sit on the sidelines waiting for someone else to do the work. You learned to do your part everyday for the good of the whole family. To see that same kind of collaboration at our par-ish level is quite admirable and something for which I am most grateful as a pastor (parent)...so thank you! For those who are new and/or getting involved for the first time, welcome to the ‘team’ and I so hope that you will continue to stay active in the ministries of our parish. For those who have been around and helping for years, I can’t thank you enough for sticking with us and continuing to serve as a role model of what it means to be a part of a family and a parish. Let us celebrate and give thanks to God for the abundance of love that He shows us...and the abundance of good things that the Holy Spirit is doing with and among us! With an abundance of gratitude, Fr. Jim Deiters

Trusting in God’s Mercy through the Aid of the Psalms A Saint John’s School of Theology

and Seminary Theology Day Inspiring Tomorrow’s Church

Saturday, October 1 Check in 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Presentation 9 a.m. to 12 Noon St. Clare of Assisi, O’Fallon

Fr. Dale Launderville, OSB, Dean

At the heart of the Old Testament is the proclamation that “the Lord is a God gracious and merciful, slow to anger and

abounding in love and fidelity” (Exod 34:6). How we come to know and love this God in our experience is aided by praying

and reflecting on the Psalms. Through attention to Psalms 34, 62, 102-3 and 139, we will break open these psalms and try to

know more fully their transformative power. Free event, light refreshments provided.

YOU DID IT FOR ME In Iraq, Imad was a professor and on the wrong side of the extrem-ists. After hiding and living in fear for three years and two months,

his and his family’s application for refugee status was accepted, and they moved to the United States where they start with noth-ing. Catholic Charities got him and his family back on track. The children were enrolled in public schools, and Imad attended cultur-al adaptation and English classes daily. They are grateful for their new life and look forward to enriching their community.

Works of Mercy: Clothing the Naked & Sheltering the Homeless

The Works of Mercy can sometimes seem like heroic and remote events, like Mother Teresa’s work in Calcutta.

Come learn how the Works of Mercy can be daily, accessible activities. Parishioners, Corrine and Jim Wright, will give a short presentation on their experience working

with people in need of clothing and shelter. There will be time for questions & discussion afterwards.

Faith is a source of Radiance. Faith in God helps us realize how sacred we are as human beings. We remember how God’s lov-ing gaze is fixed upon us, and how much He desires for us to reach our potential and become all that we are meant to be. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: Our faith is a source of radiance into every area of life. It helps us see other human beings as gifts, as persons to be respected and loved for their own sake, rather than objects to be used or taken for granted. Pray that this light will radiate to others so that we can effectively reflect God’s love to all we meet, building up a culture of life.

Welcome Back Choirs!

In lieu of my usual article, I will be talking about our parish choirs this week. “Connecting Music to Mass” for this week (along with past weeks) can be found at www.stclarechurch.org/musictomass You’ve no doubt noticed in the last couple weeks that our choirs have returned to our Sunday liturgies. The adult choirs have undergone some exciting changes that will broaden our scope of ministry moving forward. Previously, we had a choir of about 30 singers that sang regularly for the 8:30 Mass, and a choir of about 15 singers that sang regularly for the 10:30 Mass. If you were at one of the Triduum liturgies, Pentecost, or Cor-pus Christi Mass, you experienced these two ensembles combined, which produced even more fruits than their work as two separate ensembles. After a year of directing these wonderful singers and consulting with Fr. Jim, I decided to make a jump and try something new this year. We have combined into one large choir, which, after some new folks joining over the summer, totals 48 singers. 48 singers – indeed, our parish is blessed! Two sub-groups of this large choir are a Men’s Schola Cantorum and Women’s Scho-la Cantorum. What is a Schola Cantorum??? It’s the Church’s universal term for a choir, literally translated to “school of singers.”

Without going into great detail on scheduling, you will hear these three ensembles – the mixed, men’s, and women’s, choirs – at our 8:30 and 10:30 Masses on a regular basis. I am very grateful for the flexibility of these singers as we embark on a new scheduling adventure this season. If you are inter-ested in joining us, please contact me at your earliest conven-ience! Our children’s choirs are also in full swing as of last week. New this year is the Cherub Choir (2nd-4th grade) which re-hearses on Wednesdays from 3:10p-3:40p. The Treble Choir (5th-8th grade) rehearses from 3:45p-4:45p on Wednesdays. Both choirs rehearse in the St. Clare School choir room. In-terested singers and their parents are welcomed to contact me about membership! If you have a school dismissal conflict with our start time, please still contact me to see if we can work something out. Some people raise their eyebrows at the word “performance” when associated with music ministry. But…our choirs per-form. They perform acts of praise, thanksgiving, worship, and adoration to God week after week. I am happily indebted to these singers (and their supportive families) who give lav-ishly of their time and talent to enrich our parish liturgies. Our parish is truly blessed with choirs who help us pray at Mass! Stephen Eros Director of Liturgy & Music
