Ecumenical Prayer

Give us open minds, 0 Lord, minds ready to receive and to welcome new light of knowledge as may be revealed to us. Let not the past ever be so dear to us as to set limits to the future. Give us courage to change our minds, when that is needed. Let us be tolerant to the thoughts of others and receptive to such awareness as may come to us through them. May we be human channels through which love and compassion may reach the hearts and lives of those nearest to us.

John Lalley Professor Emeritus


John Lalley retired from Cincinnati Technical College this year after a 35-year teaching career. The College's board of trustees honored him with the title of Professor Emeritus at its August meeting.

After an eight year industrial career in technical chemistry, Mr. Lalley became a physics teacher in 1956 at Central High School, later named Courter Technical High School. During his high school teaching career he was named Science Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Science Education Association.

When Cincinnati Technical College was founded as the Cincinnati Cooperative School of Technology, Mr. Lalley became a part-time instructor. In 1968, Mr. Lalley joined the institute's faculty as a full-time physics instructor. He saw the post high school program grow to become the area's only autonomous two-year state college, first known as the Cincinnati Technical Institute and later Cincinnati Technical College.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Lalley served the College in various positions. He chaired the institutional self-study committee for CTC's original accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1976. Other duties included assistant to the president, director of planning, chairman of the general studies department, and institutional energy coordinator.

Foremost in his career has been teaching. Mr. Lalley developed the College's original physics curricula and authored Experiments in Physics, the text used by all CTC engineering technologies students. He has been recognized by his teaching peers and students by his nomination for the Bruckmann Award for Teaching Excellence in every year since the award was initiated.

Mr. Lalley is a graduate of Covington Latin School and Thomas More College.

Ernest Leon Robinson Chairperson, Board of Trustees


Ernest Robinson joined the Cincinnati Technical College Board of Trustees in 1988. He was appointed by the Cincinnati Board of Education. For the past year he has served as chairperson of the governing body.

Mr. Robinson retired in 1988 after a distinguished career as a research aquatic biologist with the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Because of this scientific career, he serves on the City of Cincinnati Environmental Advisory Committee. He is also a member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.

The City of Cincinnati invited Mr. Robinson to serve on its Community Development Advisory Committee to which he is the vice chair of its Housing Task Force. Mr. Robinson is a member and past president of the North Avondale Neighborhood Association and is a board member and past board president of the Coalition of Neighborhoods. He also serves on the board of directors of National Neighbors, Inc.

Mr. Robinson volunteers on the United Way's agency accreditation and agency evaluation teams. He is a board member and former president of the Wesley Child Care Center. He is chair of the Stewardship Commission and member of the senior choir of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Mr. Robinson's past activities include member of the executive committee, Citizens School Committee; advisor, Junior Achievement; Webelo director and assistant scout master, Boy Scouts of America; and member, May Festival Chorus and Alpha Alpha Music Ensemble.

Mr. Robinson holds a baccalaureate degree in biology from Youngstown College.

Elizabeth K. Lanier Attorney

Frost & Jacobs

Attorney Elizabeth Lanier is one of the newest members of the Ohio Board of Regents. She was appointed to a nine-year term by former Governor Richard Celeste in 1990. The Board of Regents oversees all state-supported colleges and universities in Ohio.

For the past two years, Mrs. Lanier has served on the five-member Ohio Arts Facilities Commission. She is chairperson of the Ohio Center for the Arts-Cincinnati. The $60 million facility will be built with state, city and private support. Now in the design stage, the Ohio Center is scheduled to open in 1994.

Mrs. Lanier served as a volunteer consultant to the Community Chest for its 1990 study on child abuse and neglect in Hamilton County. She is a past board member of the College of Mount St. Joseph and WGUC radio. Her present affiliations include member of the board of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, volunteer for United Way, and volunteer for the Fine Arts Fund.

As a partner in the law firm of Frost & Jacobs, Mrs. Lanier specializes in general corporate, commercial transactions, acquisitions and securities litigation. Prior to joining this Cincinnati firm in 1982, Mrs. Lanier practiced law in New York.

Mrs. Lanier earned the Juris Doctor degree from the Columbia University School of Law where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Her undergraduate degree is from Smith College. Mrs. Lanier also studied at the Graduate Institute of International Relations of the University of Geneva in Switzerland.

Academic Dress

From the costumes worn in the academic procession one can tell the level of degree (associate's, bachelor's, master's, doctor's) the wearer has earned, the field of learning, and the instution that granted the degree. The costume consists of cap, gown and hood.

The usual cap is a square black mortarboard with a black tassel; the doctor's cap has a gold tassel. The gown is also normally black. Associate's, bachelor's and master's gowns are relatively plain and closed in front; the doctor's gown is cut fuller, is open in front, and has velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the sleeves. The panels and bars are usually black.

The hood, patterned after the medieval monk's hood, goes over the shoulders and hangs down in back. The hood for the three degrees vary in length, from the bachelor's, the shortest, to the doctor's, the longest. The velvet border shows by its color the field of learning; the most common are: white - arts, letters, humanities (usually seen in honorary doctor's degrees); dark blue -philosophy (the most common in doctor's hoods), purple - law; scarlet -theology; green - medicine; golden yellow - science. The same colors may be used in the panels and bars of the gown. The most distinctive part of the costume is the silk lining of the hood which bears the official colors of the institution granting the degree.
