TUTORIAL QUESTION

Choose stories from any 3 genres of children stories to be taught for

a designated level. Justify your choices with reference to features

of the genre.

Pandora's BoxAncient Greek Myth

Summary

Zeus was angry with the Prometheus for defying his orders and bringing fire to mankind, but Zeus controlled his anger and came up with a plan. Zeus sent a woman who would be a wife for Prometheus's bother, Epimetheus. The woman was named Pandora and along with the gift of beauty, she was given the gift of curiosity by the godess Hera.

On the day of their wedding, Zeus gave Pandora and Epimetheus a box that he said held great treasure. Prometheus warmed Pandora and his brother to never open the box, but eventually Pandora's curiosity won out. When she opened the box, out came all the plagues of the world including sickness, greed, malevolence, and so forth. All the remained in the box was, Hope telling that Hope would never abandon mankind.

The main characters of this story are given mythical powers and known as gods.Example:- The gods are Epimetheus, Prometheus and Zeus.

It explains on how the bad things like envy, sickness and hate also Hope as the good things come to the worls.

• This mythology is suitable to be told to students of higher level

• This story can be adapted into more appropriate version so that students are able to adapt the concept into real life situations

• The story teaches about being curious. As we say “curiosity kills the cat”. We should not mess with the things that we yet to know

What can be taught from this story:• From this story, teacher can teach students

that they should hold on to the trust that other people put on them

• Listen to warnings and do not ignore them• It also tells that when everything seems in

the darkest, and there is no light to be seen, there is always HOPE

CHARLIE AND THE

CHOCOLATE FACTORY

CHARACTERS• Do not giving up easily.

( never lose hope )

• Do not be greedy.

- Charlie who comes from a very poor family is trying his best to win the ‘Golden Ticket’ by buying

chocolate bar so that he and his family will have a better life.

- The other lucky children lose their sense when they are at the chocolate factory and they are

causing trouble.

- there are variety of chocolates and sweets that can attract the children.

• Manage to interpret the storyline - shows the flow of the story where the characters

moves from place to place (shows the differences between the setting)

• Help children to imagine and understand the described story.

story.• Convey happy ending of what children is hoping

for every story.• Length of the story that able to avoid children

from lose attention during reading. ( not too long and not too short )

beings, places and events that are not occurring in the real world.

which challenge and expand our sense of the norm.

• It have strong themes, traditions, and structures.

• Involve magic eg. mostly "good versus evil."

• Take place in created or imaginary worlds.

Qualities that should be in modern fantasy books

• stories must always meet criteria for excellence in narrative fiction

• effective settings are detailed and believable within the context of the story

• themes are meaningful, challenging the reader to ask questions and think about life

• word choices are clear• story events are imaginative, and logically

consistent within the story world• characters are multidimensional and

logical behaviour
