DESCRIPTION
The Art Zine Workshop led by Constanze Müller and Eriz Moreno Aranguren in TUMO Center for Creative Technologies. The workshop participants were introduced to the history of zines and studied numerous examples of zine texts. This was followed by each student getting a personal map of the city of Yerevan and marking the significant physical spaces of their lives. The week ended with students deciding how they would showcase their personal spaces for their zines. Constanze Müller, teacher and art mediator, believes zine publications are truly democratic because they allow individuals to express their independent thoughts with limited resources. Though print remains the most popular zine format, its effortless shift from print to digital will continue to make it relevant in contemporary society according to artist and workshop leader Araguren. The zines Tumo students are working on will be published in print and digital formats.

The Cascade is a giant stairway in Yerevan,Armenia.
It links the
down town Kentron area of Yerevan with the
Monument
neighborhood. The construction of the
cascade
designed by architect Jim
Torosyan
was launched in 1971
and
completed in
1980.
Inside the Cascade, underneath the exterior steps is a couple of
escalators
going the length of the complex. There are also rooms
connected to
some of the landings along the escalators which comprise
the
Cafesjian Museum of Art. The exterior of Cascade, in
addition to stairs has multiple levels
with
fountains and sculptures. The stairs
afford walkers unobstructed
views of central Yerevan
and Mount Ararat.
The construction began in 1971, during the Soviet period. The first
phase was
completed in 1980. Further development was implemented between
2002
and 2009 when the complex was handed over to the
American-Armenian
businessman Gerard Cafesjian in the early
2000s and a complete renovation was
performed.
A large museum complex was also planned for
the top. Although the construction of
the
museum was launched, it was frozen
in the early stages and has
not
continued for years.
The Cafesjian Center for the

area in and around theCascade.
The museum is run by the Cafesjia
n Museum Foundation, which was
established in April 2
002 in Yerevan under the auspices of th
e Arme-
nian government and the Cafesjian Museum Foundation of A
merica.
The Armenian government provided the Foundation with a half-
constructed”Cascade” c

tion invested over 35 million dollars t
o complete the reconstruction of

In 1945-1946 Yerevan Zoo was home to about 179 animals representing 32 species. Even dur-
ing the war, Yerevan Zoo was the focus of Moscow’s attention and still received funding for
reconstruction and renovation works despite financial issues. In 1954, Yerevan Zoo counted
about 332 animals (no available information about species), 95 of which were acquired dur-
ing the same year. In 1954, around 2500 decorative trees, shrubs and 3000 types of seedlings
were planted for the enlargement of the Zoo’s green areas. Yet, because of the absence of ir-
rigation water in the Zoo, most of the new planted trees couldn’t survive.

about 332 animals (no available information about species), 95 of which were acquired during the same year. In 1954, around 2500 decora-
tive trees, shrubs and 3000 types of seedlings were planted for the enlargement of the Zoo’s green areas. Yet, because of the absence of irriga-
tion water in the Zoo, most of the new planted trees couldn’t survive.
