The award will be presentedto the EU on December 10,which is the anniversary of Al-fred Nobel's death.

In Oslo, the influential sec-retary of the Norwegian NobelCommittee brushed off thecriticisms.

"These viewpoints have beenpresented several times, theyare well known and won't im-pact the evolution of the prize,"Geir Lundestad told AFP.

He added that the award"will indeed be handed out" atthe Oslo ceremony, where itwill be jointly collected by Eu-ropean Parliament PresidentMartin Schulz, EuropeanCommission President JoseManuel Barroso and EU Pres-ident Herman Van Rompuy.

The criticisms by the Inter-national Peace Bureau echothose of its former vice presi-dent, Norwegian lawyerFredrik Heffermehl, author ofthe book "Nobel's Will", whounsuccessfully lobbied theSwedish foundation chargedwith overseeing the awardsover the issue.

OSLO (AFP) - Giving theNobel Peace Prize to the Euro-pean Union is "unlawful" sinceit is not a "champion of peace"as defined by the will offounder Alfred Nobel, the In-ternational Peace Bureau saidon Monday.

In an open letter to Swe-den's Nobel Foundation, theorganisation asked that thisyear's eight million kronor-prize (932,000 euros or $1.19million) be withheld, a de-mand that was immediately re-jected by the Norwegiancommittee tasked with select-ing the peace laureate.

"The European Union ...clearly is not one of 'the cham-pions of peace' Alfred Nobelhad in mind and described inhis will," the peace federationwrote.

The Swedish industrialistand philanthropist, who died in1896, said in his testament thatthe award should go to the"person who shall have donethe most or the best work forfraternity between nations, for

the abolition or reduction ofstanding armies and for theholding and promotion ofpeace congresses."

The International PeaceBureau noted that the EU "isnot seeking to realise a demil-itarisation of international re-lations", and that its members"condone security based onmilitary force and have wagedwars rather than insisting onthe need for alternative ap-proaches."

The Geneva-based peacenetwork, which has more than300 member organisations andwas itself the recipient of theNobel Peace Prize in 1910, ac-cused the committee of having"redefined" the prize, whichnow also recognises environ-mentalists and anti-povertycampaigners.

The only Nobel Prize givenout in Norway was on October12 awarded to a crisis-strickenEU for its "advancement ofpeace and reconciliation, democracy and human rightsin Europe."
