It’s not unusual for someone to be surprised at the Aileen Osofsky ACBL Goodwill Committee meeting. It happened to Osofsky herself at the 2009 Spring NABC in Houston, where the late Goodwill chair was told that she had been elected to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame.

On Monday, the surprised honoree was Kent White of Lincoln CA, about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento.

Bruce Blakely, who represents District 21 on the ACBL Board of Directors, took the podium and invited NABC Chairman Jim Leuker to join him.

Blakely explained that it is the district director’s prerogative, but not obligation, to grant a Lifetime Goodwill Award for Exceptional Service to a member of his district.

“Volunteerism and goodwill go hand in hand,” said Blakely. “We couldn’t survive without our volunteers, and goodwill makes it all worthwhile.”

Blakely said he and Leuker went on a cruise together during the summer and met a group of people from the Lincoln Hills “and they all talked about this person who did so much for their club. They said he was the heart and soul of the club and built it from nothing.”

There were more encounters on the cruise, Blakely said, with people who sung the praises of the man behind the Sun City/Lincoln Hills Duplicate Bridge Club. “He is the Martha Stewart of bridge,” Blakely said before calling White to the podium.

Lazarus-Laken win Super Senior Pairs

Baltimore-area players Ed Lazarus and Mark Laken won the four-session Super Senior Pairs — for players 70 and older — by a full board, and gave Lazarus his third victory in the contest since its inauguration in 2010. Lazarus has won the contest each year playing with a different partner.

Well-wishers teased Lazarus after the victory, with several shouting, “Hey Ed! Need a partner for next year?”

Erik Kirchhoff Erik Kirchhoff, expert

player and coach of open and Junior Dutch teams, died Nov. 24 of a heart attack while on vacation in Saba, Dutch Antilles. He was 60.

Over a period of four decades Kirchhoff was one of the most influential bridge players in the Netherlands. He represented his country on many occasions winning two bronze medals at European and World Championships. He was one of the founding editors of Bridge Magazine IMP and a successful as coach of Dutch teams.

Jan van Cleeff, editor of the magazine said, “For top players, Kirchhoff was a true bridge-guru, an expert-expert. The Dutch bridge scene will never be the same.”

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. Both cards of a partnership must be identical and include the first and last names of each member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSTeams strategy

by Brent ManleyThere are many stories about the late Ron

Andersen, one of the most colorful and successful players in ACBL history. At a tournament in Ottawa ON, in the days when negative doubles were Alertable, Andersen’s partner made a jump overcall of 2♠. Andersen stewed for a long time before saying, “At the clubs where I play, we Alert our negative doubles.” Andersen’s left-hand opponent turned to him and said, “At the club where I play, we don’t play negative doubles.” The result for Andersen and partner was minus 800.

New players often wonder about the differences in strategy between pairs and teams – and there are some.

In both games, vulnerability is a key element, but for different reasons.

In pairs, you are more cautious when competing because of the danger of going minus 200, known as “the kiss of death.” If the high-card points are distributed roughly evenly between the two sides, plus 200 for one side will almost always beat whatever partscore that side might be able to achieve. In pairs, players are more likely to make close penalty doubles because the payoff is so good and a zero (if the contract makes) does not ruin your game. In teams, doubling the opponents into game could cost you the match.

At both forms of scoring, your vulnerable overcalls will be much more substantial than when you are not vulnerable. In pairs, you’re always concerned about minus 200 or more. In teams, a frisky vulnerable overcall that results in minus 800 or 1100 for your side can be devastating.

For example, if you are vulnerable and your right-hand opponent opens 1♠, it would be courting disaster to overcall with this hand:♠J 4 3 ♥A J 6 4 3 ♦Q J ♣K J 2

It’s 13 high-card points, but your long suit is thin and your shape is poor. If opener’s partner has a hand such as♠8 2 ♥Q 10 9 8 7 ♦K 8 ♣Q 7 6 3,

your minus score might reach four digits (and there’s a good chance you will be doubled).

A vulnerable 2♥ should look more like this:♠4 2 ♥A K J 10 9 4 ♦A 10 9 7 ♣6

There is another way that vulnerability factors into your strategy at teams, and it might surprise you: When you are vulnerable, it pays to stretch to bid vulnerable games.

At pairs, overbidding usually leads to tops or bottoms. Going minus 50 on a board can be a cold zero if all the other pairs have plus scores. At teams, minus 50 might be a small loss or even a tie (usually called a “push”).

The reason vulnerability makes a difference in bidding game is that the payoff for success is much higher.

Say you are not vulnerable and you bid 4♠ and make it. If the opponents stop in 3♠ at the other table and take 10 tricks, your plus 420 and their plus 170 gives you a net of plus 250 – good for 6 IMPs. If both of you take nine tricks in spades, you are minus 50 while they are plus 140, a difference of 190, which costs you 5 IMPs. It’s 6-5 in favor of bidding the close game, more or less even odds.

When you are vulnerable, if you bid game and make it and they don’t bid it at the other table, you have 620 versus their 170. The difference of 450 gives you 10 IMPs. If you bid game and only nine tricks are available, you are minus 100. If they stop at 3♠ and have plus 140, you lose 6 IMPs.

That makes the odds 10-6 in favor of bidding close vulnerable games.

Regarding penalty doubles, in a team game you generally avoid making close penalty doubles of partscores, particularly 2♥ and higher. If they make the contract, it’s game, which could cost you the match. When you double a partscore, it should not be based solely on high-card strength. You should have some trump winners, too.

Opening lead: ♥A.Bidding commentary: If the bidding didn’t go

this way, don’t mention it in public. Lead commentary: As West, the best time to

lead from shortness is when holding trump control – e.g., A-x, A-x-x, K-x-x. In this case, you can visualize defeating the contract if partner has the ♥K (immediate ruff) or a minor-suit ace, in which case you will put partner in after winning the ♠A and get a ruff.

Play commentary: As South, win the ♥K at trick two (higher equal for deceptive purposes) and lead a spade.

Defensive commentary: As West, if South leads a spade at trick three, no point in rushing up with the ace. You would do that if you had a doubleton ace, but in this case partner might have a singleton king! If you did start with the doubleton ♠A, you would have to win and guess which ace partner has. On the actual layout, if partner has a

singleton spade, his discard on the second spade will tell you what you need to know.

Defensive commentary: As East, discard the ♦2 on the second spade, discouraging. You have been cursed with such terrible club spots that partner might not read the ♣3 as encouraging! If, for one of many reasons, you cannot signal encouragement in one suit, signal discouragement in the other. It’s six of one, a half dozen of the other. Assuming partner is breathing and shifts to a club upon winning the second spade, you win and give partner a heart ruff. Note: Some play “upside-down” attitude signals. Using this method, a low card is an encouraging signal and a high card is discouraging. Be familiar with your opponents’ signaling methods.

Final Contract: 2♠ by WestTable Result: Making 2, N-S minus 110Director Ruling: Making 2, N-S minus 110Committee Ruling: Making 2, N-S minus 110Facts: The director was summoned after the

deal had been played and scored. Neither East-West convention card was marked in the weak-two section regarding non-forcing responses. North-South wanted their interests protected insofar as their right to compete in the auction had they known that the 2♠ bid was non-forcing. West said that he meant 2♠ to be forcing and East said that 2♠ “should be forcing.”

Director’s Ruling: The table director did not appear at the hearing and the directing staff was represented by the screening director. The table director wrote on the appeal form:

“Result stands. Neither opponent protected themselves in pass-out position or [as] opening leader. Players who, by experience or expertise, recognize that their opponents have neglected to Alert a special agreement will be expected to protect themselves . . . Note also that an opponent who actually knows of or suspects what is happening, even though not properly informed, may not be entitled to redress.”

The screening director said that it was his understanding that the table director discussed with the East-West pair the issue of whether 2♠ was forcing and was convinced that both of them thought that such was their partnership agreement. Both of their actions might appear a bit strange, but there was little else to suggest that they had an agreement that they were playing (Alertable) non-forcing responses to weak-two bids. Therefore, the director ruled that although their bidding was strange, they had not violated their legal obligation to Alert since they were not, by agreement, playing an Alertable convention. Without an infraction, there can be no adjustment.

The Appeal: North-South appealed the ruling and North attended the hearing. North contended that if East thought that 2♠ was non-forcing then he was obligated to Alert. His failure to bid in response to 2♠ is clear evidence that he thought it was non-forcing and that, therefore, he owed an Alert to his opponents. Furthermore, West’s hand does not comport with what most people would consider a forcing bid. This all suggests that 2♠ in this partnership is non-forcing and that the convention cards were mistakenly filled out.

The Decision: This case comes down to determining whether East-West had an agreement about the whether a new suit over a weak two-bid

was forcing and, if they did, what that agreement was. If they had no agreement at all, or had an agreement that it was forcing, then there was no obligation to Alert the bid. If they had an agreement that it was non-forcing, then an Alert was due and North/South damage which may have resulted from it could be regained through a score adjustment. The evidence that 2♠ was non-forcing was (a) East passed the bid and (b) West’s hand is more consistent with as agreement of non-forcing than it would be with an agreement of forcing. The evidence that it was forcing was (a) East-West’s convention cards did not have “New Suits NF” checked, (b) West stated that 2♠ was forcing, and (c) East admitted that East’s bid “should be forcing.”

Law 75C says that one should presume misexplanation without evidence to the contrary. It does not state how much evidence is necessary to accept mistaken (or contrary to agreement) calls. Here, the evidence to support either conclusion is substantial. Normally, committees would choose to conclude misexplanation (failure to Alert); however, the table director heard and evaluated East-West’s discussion of the meaning of 2♠. Since this was likely to be an enlightening interchange, the committee thought that deference to the table director’s judgment was appropriate. It seems likely that the table director’s judgment that 2♠ was forcing and that East’s pass was a lucky system violation was correct. Without access to the table director or the East-West players, the committee had some reservations about this conclusion, particularly since the table director did not expressly state it in his write-up. The presenting director said that this was implicit in the table director’s writing, though, so the committee used it to decide. The table director’s ruling stands, East-West in 2♠ making, North-South minus 110. The appeal had substantial merit.

full credit for the growth of the club, which has a Wednesday afternoon game that draws 35 to 40 tables every week.

“There are so many volunteers at our club,” he said. “I haven’t done it by myself.”

White took up duplicate in 1960 and traveled the country in the restaurant management business until he retired in 2000. At Lincoln Hills, he discovered there was a bridge club that was not affiliated with the ACBL. He got a sanction for the club, became the director and learned ACBLscore. He has served as club president two or three times over the past 12 years.

The club today has electronic scoring and a Duplimate machine so that players can have hand records. There are three games a week.

White’s friend, Sharon Neff, said White “is the one who always tells people to be nice.”

After kicking off the meeting, Goodwill Chair Rose Meltzer invited ACBL’s chief executive, Robert Hartman, to the podium. He thanked everyone in attendance “for what you do for goodwill and friendliness.” Hartman also took the opportunity to thank eight ACBL employees – all tournament directors – who are on the front lines in customer relations and the promotion of goodwill: Marianne Van Gelder, Nancy Boyd, Evelyn Holtz, Scott Humphrey, Donna Coker, Martin Ware, Roger Putnam and Brian Russell.

ACBL’s president for 2012, Sharon Anderson, said she spent the year traveling and talking to members. “I had 62 listening sessions,” she said, “and the number one thing people mentioned that makes the game enjoyable is kind people and being treated with respect.”

Meltzer introduced ACBL board members, including newly elected President Don Mamula and Richard Anderson, newly elected chairman of the ACBL Board of Governors.

Meltzer had fun with a drill designed to determine the person in the room with the longest tenure as a Goodwill Committee member. She had everyone stand, then directed those who had joined the committee since 2000 to sit. That group was followed by those who joined between 1990 and 2000, also invited to sit. The routine continued until there was one person standing – former ACBL President and District 3 Director Joan Gerard.

Meltzer ended the meeting by announcing that she is stepping down as Goodwill chair and that Sandy DeMartino will begin a three-year term as chair in 2013. DeMartino will run her first Goodwill Committee meeting at the Spring NABC in St. Louis.

Meltzer’s parting words: “Always express goodwill and the spread the word.”

Bidding Box Alerts and

AnnouncementsWhen using bidding boxes, the

ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

San Francisco and Marin Food Banksselected as NABC

CharityIn an effort for bridge to give back to the NABC

host community, the local NABC committee selected the San Francisco and Marin Food Banks as the convention’s charity. On Monday, the executive director of the food banks received a check for $5000 from the ACBL Charity Foundation.

Tournament Chairman Jim Leuker feels the San Francisco and Marin Food Banks are indeed a worthy cause.

“With recent tough economic times a lot of people have been struggling to make ends meet and we feel this is our opportunity to put food on the tables for so many in need,” Leuker said.

Paul Ash, executive director of the San Francisco and Marin Food Banks, said the donation comes at a critical time for the organization as low-income families’ budgets are particularly impacted during the holidays.

“We are trying to serve more people during the holiday season,” said Ash. “The donation allows us to distribute fresh produce and protein items, which is an important part of our holiday season.”

In 1964, the ACBL Charity Foundation was established to support the philanthropic endeavors of the ACBL and has since made substantial contributions to a wide range of charitable organizations. Each NABC committee receives funds to donate to a local charity organization of their choosing.

“Raising money for charity was one of the original purposes of the ABCL,” said Charity Foundation President Georgia Heth. “Since we give most of our donations to smaller, local organizations, we get to help make a big difference in the communities our members live in.”

The InsiderCall me Insider. So far, the search for the

Supreme Commander has been a series of dead-ends. The Insider heard the S.C. had been spotted at the French Laundry. The Insider found that not only was the S.C. long gone, but he also couldn’t get his shirts washed. The next stop was Robert Mondavi. After taking the tour and visiting the tasting room twice, the Insider forgot who he was looking for. After a long nap, the Insider gave up, checked into a little B and B, and sat down to write to the Bulletin Boys and call it a day.

The Bulletin Boys told him the playing rooms filled to near capacity, the players were happy, the Free Lesson was well attended, and the Daily Bulletin arrived even earlier than the day before. Bottom line: the NABC got even better as soon as the Insider left town. The Bulletin Boys have always maintained that the Daily Bulletin always gets better when the Insider misses his deadline, but none of this was a deterrent to submitting this column through the magic of the modern technology. Special thanks (or blame) to the ACBL IT Department who provided the Insider with Palm Pilot so he could submit these reports from afar.

Today the Blue Ribbon Pairs begin. This is traditionally the best attended day of the Fall NABC. That little area at the foot of the escalators coming down from the lobby will be jammed with people all of them asking where the “Blues” will be played. The answers: The Big Blues will be sold in Salon 9, the Mini-Blues in Salon 7. The most interesting thing will be the number of different ways the same question can be asked. Ask Me Girl will keep a tally sheet of the various iterations of “Where are the Blue Ribbon Pairs?” The over/under is 22. We’ll report the final count in the morning.

No smoking in the MarriottPlayers are reminded

that smoking is prohibited inside the Marriott, including stairwells and emergency exits. Players who are observed smoking inside the building are subject to a one-board penalty or 12-IMP penalty at that form of scoring. Players may also be subject to a disciplinary hearing.

Players who wish to smoke must do so outside.

Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs

The eventThe Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs ranks

with the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs (and now the new Platinum Pairs in the spring) as one of the most prestigious — and toughest — pair events on the ACBL calendar. Like the LM Pairs and Platinum Pairs, the Blue Ribbon Pairs is played over three days and includes two qualifying, two semifinal and two final sessions.

Entry is restricted to winners and runners-up in regional championships — plus high finishers in North American championships, members of current Grand National district championship teams, members of current official teams representing ACBL and the top 100 lifetime masterpoint holders.

The Blue Ribbon Pairs was renamed the Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs in 1999 to honor one of bridge’s all-time great players, writers, administrators and the authority on the laws of the game.

Kaplan (1925-1997) won his first North American championship in 1953 — the Vanderbilt — and his last in 1997 — the Open Swiss Teams at the Spring NABC in Dallas.

Kaplan was recognized as the world’s foremost authority on the laws of duplicate and rubber bridge. He became co-chairman of the ACBL Laws Commission in 1978 and was co-chairman of the WBF Laws Commission at the time of his death.

He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1993. In 1995 he was inducted into the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame and the WBF Hall of Fame.

his best.”Murthy, who died of colon cancer, grew up in

Cupertino, 43 miles south of San Francisco. His mother, Radha Murthy, still lives there. His sister, Rekha, lives in Chicago.

Murthy attended the University of California at Berkeley before enrolling in law school at New York University. He was practicing law in New York when he died.

In bridge, Murthy was a top Junior player, earning a spot on the USA1 team at the World Youth Team Championship in Ann Arbor MI in 1991 (finishing fourth). Before playing in Ann Arbor, he had already made his mark, finishing second with Adair Gellman in the Rockwell Mixed Pairs in 1990. In 1992, he and Brad Moss took second in the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs. Murthy broke through to the top in 1993 as a member of the winning squad in the Grand National Teams, Championship Flight. Later that year, Murthy and Moss won the Nail Life Master Open Pairs.

The eulogies at his memorial service were heartfelt.

One of them came from Steve Weinstein: “For those of you who didn’t know Rev, or “Ravi,” as Mrs. Murthy affectionately referred to him, he was an amazing bridge player. The best way I can describe it to those of you who don’t play bridge is it reminds me of watching Bjorn Borg play tennis. He would just smack it to your backhand far and deep and hard every time. The only difference I can think of is I have seen Borg make a mistake. My guess is that he practiced law the same way.

“I have so many great memories with my friend. I remember playing cards with him to all hours in the morning at my home many a night. Eventually I realized he would never voluntarily go to sleep, so I had to learn a little trick.

“Before he would come over, he would take the train, greet Liz and me, greet the dogs. Nobody that ever knew him didn’t love him, animal or human. I would go to a library of bridge books and research the most difficult hands I could find, so when it was 4 in the morning and I was dead tired, I had to sleep. I would just slide a little piece of paper out, say, “Rev, here is a hand I was looking at,” and then when he got so engrossed, as he always did, I would slide off and go to sleep.

“The last major tournament that Rev and I played was in Copenhagen. For all his pain, he and Jaggy (Shivdasani) snagged one of the top overall spots. It was at this tournament that my worst fear and realization culminated. Rev’s death was imminent . . .

“The hardest thing to do when a friend or family member dies of a debilitating illness is to remember the joys of his life and not the suffering of his death. Rev knew how to live. May he rest in peace.”

Chip Martel could not attend the memorial for Murthy, but sent a eulogy read by Rosenberg. This was the final paragraph:

“Though I admired Rev greatly as a bridge player, I held him in even higher regard as a friend. There are lots of fine bridge players in our community, fewer great people. We will always greatly regret having someone so full of life lost while so young.”

Passell tops 70,000 MPsMike Passell,

one of ACBL’s top players for decades, hauled in nearly 160 masterpoints at a regional just before coming to the Fall NABC and now has more than 70,000 to his credit.

Passell, who lives in Las Vegas NV, notes that he topped 60,000 and 70,000 playing with the same partner – Carolyn Lynch, of Scottsdale AZ. At the Louisville-Lexington Regional in Elizabeth IN, Passell and Lynch joined forces with Garey Hayden, Adam Zmudzinski and Cezary Balicki to win all five events they entered – four knockouts and a Swiss teams.

Passell has an impressive record in high-level competition, with 22 North American championships, 20 seconds plus two world titles and one second.

There was speculation that Steve Beatty’s team would also withdraw after three quarters: They were trailing Vinita Gupta’s squad 105-52. The gained ground in the last quarter, but it was not enough. Final: Gupta 137-Beatty 107.

Today’s pairings: Dumbovich (“International Seniors”) vs. Gupta, and DeMartino vs. Kasle.

Masterpoints are the unit which measures bridge achievement in competition. Masterpoints are awarded at ACBL clubs and tournaments in amounts proportional to the size and classification of the event and the rating of the club or tournament.

• Black points: awarded at club games. Some special club games award red, gold or silver points.

• Red points: awarded for section placements at regional tournaments and NABCs. Also awarded at clubs for special events such as the qualifying rounds of the North American Open Pairs and the Grand National Teams.

• Gold points: awarded for section firsts and overall placing in regionally rated events that have no upper masterpoint restrictions.

Platinum points: awarded for NABC+ events.Gold points are also awarded for sectional firsts

and overall placing in regional events of two or more sessions that have a masterpoint limit of 750 or more points.

One gold point is awarded to section winners in the annual ACBL Instant Matchpoint Game in sections of seven or more tables.

In addition, new players may now win gold points in their own NABC events: 1.50 gold in the

National 199er Pairs at the Summer NABC and 1.00 gold in the National 99er Pairs at the Fall NABC (the remainder of the award is in red points).

A major source of gold points is the bracketed knockout teams. The overall awards for the top brackets are all gold while the lower brackets may receive a percentage of gold points and the remainder in red points.

• Silver points: awarded for sectional firsts and overall placing at sectional tournaments. Also awarded at Sectional Tournaments at Clubs (StaC).
