Tennis Ireland has recently developed an excitingnew School Tennis Initiative Programme.
At first sight, tennis may not look like an obviouschoice for delivery through the school PE programme.Questions often arise such as, how can we play tenniswith no nets? Is it not dangerous with the hard tennisballs? What about all the different ages and abilities?
In order toshow how easyit is to offer adifferent sportas part of thegames strand,and tointroduce afantastic sportto as wide anaudience aspossible,
Tennis Ireland has developed its new Schools TennisInitiative with a programme which launched inSeptember of this year.
Schools who become involved in the programmecan organise coaching programmes either as after-school clubs or during the curriculum time with their
local coach. All Tennis Ireland coaches work from theTennis Ireland school lessons plans, a set of lessonplans that work directly from the games strand of thecurriculum. For schools that are perhaps not in aposition to pay for a coach, the plans can bedownloaded free of charge from the Tennis Irelandwebsite. Each game has a link to a video where you can seethe game in action. The lesson plans arecomplemented by assessment cards that can be givento pupils at the start of the course, and which allowpupils to chart their progress. What is the future for top tier football in Ireland? Is thereany? With many of the clubs reverting back to part timestatus, is it the final nail in a coffin long a-waiting it’s tripto the cemetery or is it as I believe, a unique opportunity
to revolutionise the style of football (or lack of ), played on thisisland of ours?
Football is fundamentally taught wrongly here, with theemphasis on results paramount in the minds of “coaches”charged with the task of teaching kids how to play “TheBeautiful Game”.
Unfortunately, the last thing football in this country at any ageor level could be described as is, “beautiful”.
Why is this? A mindset spawned long, long ago, imitating thebeliefs inherent in the English way of playing has never beenquestioned and we have never truly embraced or believed inour more artistic and bohemian nature. We do in almost allother art forms, music, literature, theatre and also in GaelicGames, hurling being a magnificent combination ofstrength, speed, physical combat and amazing SKILL!!There we have the crux of my argument, that we mustbelieve in the abilities of our players to master thetechniques and skills needed now to play at the top level,we must be brave enough to implement the skill drillsrequired to improve technique in players of all ages, andinstil the confidence and belief in themselves to masterthe highest levels of skill and include these drills in allsessions at all age groups.
We have to get away from the fear factor that rules inthe minds of underage coaches/ parents that suck thespirit of innovation out of young kids. That perennial touchlinecry “get rid of it”, must be replaced with “keep the ball”.
