SACRED HEART SCHOOL CELEBRATES

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS’ WEEK

In recognition of Catholic Schools’ Week, Sacred Heart

School celebrated Catholic education with a wide variety

of activities. Students began the week with reading essays

about Catholic Schools’ Week on KVPI Radio and by

praying on Radio Maria. Students worked in all

subject areas to demonstrate the importance of Catholic

Schools and also incorporated activities to celebrate the centennial of our

Diocese of Lafayette. The different activities included:

working on projects explaining why they love their Catholic School

working on the Catholic Schools Week logo

creating 3D models of various churches throughout the Diocese

building models of their own churches within the Diocese

researching different aspects of (a) the history of the diocese, (b) the

bishops of the diocese, (c) the history of their home church parishes and

(c) the history of Sacred Heart School.

Throughout the week many students and faculty members sported their

Catholic T-shirts. On Candlemas (Friday), Sacred Heart celebrated a

whole-school Mass followed by the blessing of the throats in honor of St.

Blaze. Before dismissal on Friday, while praying the end of the day prayer,

the Religious Studies I class invited the entire high school student body to

participate in releasing a balloon Rosary.

The highlight of the week was the Penny War fundraiser, which helped

raise money toward building a third house for our brothers and sisters in

Haiti. This year, Sacred Heart raised $2,552.11. Although Catholic Schools’

Week has concluded, the activities to celebrate the centennial of our diocese

will continue throughout the year. Thank you faculty, students and parents

for making this year’s Catholic Schools’ Week another success.

“DROP A

PRAYER”

Mrs. Kim Pucheu’s

sixth grade class has

come up with a new way

for students, as well as

adults, to deal with

difficult situations. The “Drop a Prayer”

movement came about during a discussion

of the Eighth Commandment and the de-

velopment of tools people can use to re-

move oneself from a situation that makes

him/her uneasy or places oneself in the

presence of gossip or un-Christian like

behaviors.

God commands us to love our

enemies...so, instead of having a verbal

exchange which could result in hurt, pain

or sin, “drop a prayer” for that person and

move on!

“Drop a Prayer” was featured on

KATC’s Cool Schools and shared across

the country. Bracelets were even made and

can be purchased at Sacred Heart School

or mailed to anyone out of state.

FOUNDATION KEEPS GIVING

For the twelfth straight year, the Sacred Heart School Foundation was able to give Sacred Heart School a generous disbursement.

In August, Mrs. Dawn Shipp, Principal, High School Department, Mrs. Virginia Morein, Principal, Elementary Department, and

Father Tom Voorhies, pastor, were delighted to accept this year’s gift. The disbursement in the amount $33,478.38 represents the

earnings on total assets for the 2016 calendar year as well as half the

proceeds from the 2016 benefit banquet and auction. SHS Foundation

disbursement funds are to subsidize projects that enhance, supplement, or

surpass the basic curriculum of Sacred Heart School. This year, the gift will

fund high school science lab equipment, chrome books for high school and

elementary and science books for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Sacred Heart

School is very grateful for the generous disbursement and truly appreciates

the generosity of everyone’s donations and contributions to the Sacred Heart

School Foundation.
