TRINITY’S CLASS DESCRIPTIONS FOR 2014-15 Literature / Reading Experiencing Literature Instructor: Janet Carney [email protected] Experiencing Literature exposes students to the rich language and enduring truths found in classical literature. The books are carefully selected to promote oral and written language development. For this reason, vocabulary, sentence structure and writing style are of paramount importance. Moreover, the story content is carefully considered for moral value, age appropriateness and student interest. Before students can intelligently discuss literature, they must first understand what they read. In the Experiencing Literature classes, students engage with the story through drama, interview, oral recitation and role-playing. These activities take readers into the heart of the story where they are active participants rather than passive bystanders, observing the suspense and action from the sidelines! Emotionally and intellectually invested in the book, students are eager to engage in lively discussion and rigorous debate. Experiencing Literature encourages the exchange of ideas and the birth of new revelation! Children in the lower grades also interpret poetry through recitation, choral speaking and dance. While students are getting lost in the adventure of a favorite story, they are simultaneously building vocabulary, increasing comprehension, and developing critical and analytical thinking skills, which are life time learning tools. In addition to training the mind, Experiencing Literature focuses on building the spirit. The word of God comes alive as students perceive the relationship between scriptural principles and hidden truths imbedded in the stories. The unique benefit of Experiencing Literature is experiencing the power of God’s word in each book as the story unfolds. Experiencing Literature. It’s is more than a story! Literature Read, Reflect, Write High School Grades Instructor: Ms. Janet Carney [email protected] (2 hour class) Mondays. The Books: The Scarlet Pimpernel, Jane Eyre. To Kill a Mockingbird, My Antonia, The Chosen, Short Stories (2) The Course: The high school literature course, above all, encourages students to engage in open discussion on compelling themes in great literature. The introduction of each book begins with the historical background as a foundation for the story plot. Before reading page one, students are challenged to consider, discuss and debate different points of view on issues such as hypocrisy, prejudice, identity, forgiveness, and …. the list goes on. After a lot of deliberation and discussion, students form opinions of their own and defend their claims. Finally, they consider initial opinions made at the beginning of each novel to see if they have changed by the end of the book. College Prep Reading Instructor: Ms. Janet Carney [email protected] Book: Ten Steps to Advancing College Reading Skills by John Langan, Fifth Edition, Published by Townsend Press /www.townsendpress.com/800-772-6410 and a vocabulary book: Advancing Vocabulary Skills by Sherrie L. Nist., ISBN-10 1-59194-193-8. Who is eligible? Eighth grade and high school students are eligible. What are the requirements? This is a two-semester course, which requires students make a one-year commitment. Students need the (2) books listed. Why this course is important? Reading is an active process requiring critical and analytical thinking skills. Unfortunately many students do not understand this concept; instead, they view reading as a passive exercise: simply glancing over words on a page. With this misunderstanding, many students enter college unaware they are ill equipped for academic reading. Consequently, they flounder and lose ground precisely because they don’t have the reading skills to identify main ideas, perceive relationships or the ability to make inferences. Without mastery of these reading techniques, comprehension and note-taking skills are compromised. Instead of reading with confidence and understanding, they read superficially, without focus or purpose. Unfortunately, such deficits lead to poor learning experiences, low grades, and low self-esteem. Who would benefit from Reading Techniques? Reading Techniques is a course for students who want to advance in academic reading. Since textbooks require analytical and critical reading skills, students with these skills are more likely to avoid frustration and succeed in their studies. Motivated and disciplined students are good candidates for RT and will enjoy immense benefits from this course. What are some of the benefits? Reading Techniques covers reading strategies and skills for academic reading. The basic benefits are increased comprehension and stronger vocabulary. As students advance in reading skills, they also learn to take efficient notes and write organized papers. Reading Techniques is preparation for college entrance exams and for academic success. One of the most important benefits is the practical application of the reading skills. Using their current textbooks, students will apply the reading techniques they are learning.

Recommended: Solutions & Test manual, 2nd ed. Chemistry has 16 modules for the 32 weeks of class. For the first week of class before coming to class, the students will need to have read the first half of the first module, reading pages 1-16 of EXPLORING CREATION WITH CHEMISTRY 2nd edition. We will cover half a module for each class meeting. The students are required to do the on your own questions in the textbook. The answers are listed at the end of each chapter. The students will also do the review questions and practice problems and turn them in at the end of each module. These answers will be in the solutions manual. The on your own, review questions and practice problems will count 10% of the student's grade. Each student will write up each lab and turn it in for a grade worth 35% of the total grade for the class. Many colleges require proof of labs. This notebook will function as the proof and allow the people to assess the level and thoroughness of the course. The tests will be given at home from the test booklet and brought to me at the next class meeting, and will be graded. The tests will be worth 55% of the total grade. The subjects covered in chemistry are as follows:

TRINITY’S CLASS DESCRIPTIONS FOR 2014-15 This class aims to teach students the skills needed for performance and public speaking through improvisation. Improvisational Performance (Improv, for short) has no script and very little pre-planning, and the skills gained through learning “Improv” are useful in every path of life. Students will learn to be comfortable speaking and performing in front of an audience, how to collaborate with their peers to create something that none of them can do on their own through communication and trust, and will develop their ability to “think outside of the box” in a way that all the textbooks in the world can’t quite teach them, all while having a blast and laughing with their friends. There will also be some role playing that will help in any type of interviews they will find themselves in. By the end of the school year, the students will be able to think quickly on their feet and to be more confident. This class will only require the student and his/her brain. No textbooks or any other materials required.
