From the Principal Trinity Catholic College Lismore the Lantern No. 5 Week Eleven Term One Tuesday, 5th April, 2016 Dear Parents/Carers, One of the intriguing things about being a Christian is the sense of mystery that is associated with some of our beliefs. The Annunciation is one such event, because it deals with the human nature of Jesus. We believe that Jesus is both God and human and that He was born of an earthly mother; He was conceived in a unique way, but conceived nevertheless. The events of His conception went something like this. God needed a mother for God’s Son, someone to bear the Son of God. Mary is the chosen one. Mary is left trying to make sense out of what makes no sense, that God decided to surrender to flesh and blood but needed her help, needed her to surrender as well in order to carry out the plan. When life throws us the unexpected, we have a choice as to how we deal with it. We can resist with all our might and anger and no compromise at any cost and resentment and “why me” attitude or we can “do an oyster”: we can accept the piece of “grit” and turn it into a pearl. After some hesitation and the seeking of more information from Gabriel, Mary’s response was, “yes”. This prompted Gabriel to say, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God’s power will rest on you. For this reason the holy child will be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:35. “Mary’s ‘yes’ is a reflection of Christ’s own ‘yes’ when He entered the world. By the meeting of these two ‘yesses’, God was able to take on a human face. This is why the Annunciation is not only a Mary feast day but a Christ feast day as well, because it celebrates a central mystery of Christ: His Incarnation.” Adapted. Pope Benedict xvi. When Mary answered “yes”, it did not mean she did so without fear; it simply meant that Mary was not going to allow fear to prevent her from making an important decision. A great example for us. Dear Parents/Carers,

One of the intriguing things about being a Christian is the sense of mystery that is associated with some of our beliefs. SCHOOL ZONESA reminder to all our parents ahead of the break at the end of Term 1 that school zones remain in place for the safety of our children and families. School zones operate on all gazetted school days, which are all days the school is open, even pupil free days. School zones operate as normal until (and include) Friday 2 April and resume on Tuesday 26 April, whether students are present or not.

SANTA TERESA / SOLOMON ISLAND’S IMMERSION GROUPSOur first two Immersion groups have returned. The Santa Teresa group arrived back on 26 March and the Solomon Island group arrived back on 31 March. My thanks to Ms Kath Ellis and Mr Jesse Smith who accompanied the students to Santa Teresa and Mrs Lisa Yopp, Mr Matthew Barlow and Mr Luke Miller who accompanied the group who travelled to the Solomon Islands. Reports indicate that they had a great time. Past experience is that the Immersions are always both an exciting and life changing experience for the students. Indications are that this year has been no different.

ASSISTANT HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: HSIEMs Dana Barnsley has resigned her position as AHOD as of the end of this Term. I thank her for all she has done during her time in this role. Ms Cheryl Rawson has been appointed to this role for the remainder of 2016. I thank Ms Rawson for being willing to take on this important role.

SO THE TERM COMES TO A GENTLE CLOSE, BUT WHAT A TERM IT HAS BEEN!

This week we have Year 10 students out on Work Experience – what an adventure for them all – the reality of a working life that now extends to we are almost 70 years of age really requires them to understand themselves and how their future is shaped by the choices that they make. I am very keen to hear about their adventures next Term.

Year 12 students are attending a unique experience for the majority of society, an opportunity to go on Retreat – that time of rest and reflection of where they are in their life, their family and a relationship with God. The significance the College extends this is indicative in the time given, some three nights and three and half days. I sincerely thank all the staff who are attending in their support of this opportunity, knowing that their choice to be with your sons/daughters means they are not with their own family over this time.

Given that these two Year Groups are away it is left to Year 11 to be the oldest Year Group at the College. I have been most impressed by Year 11 in their academic endeavours. They have commenced how I hope they intend to continue, with a concerted effort in being successful learners.

In light of my upcoming absence from Monday 4th April to 28th April please contact my Personal Assistant Mrs Robyn Stuart 6627 6622 with any enquiries that you might have concerning the Senior School. I will have limited access to the Internet and will endeavour to keep abreast of any issues that need to be attended to. I have been selected to attend the Marist School Leaders Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Rome and then Champagnat country. It covers some 22 days and there are 28 participants and four leaders including Br Michael Green and Br Michael Akers. This is a pilgrimage and study tour that will bring our Christian story to life. I thank the College in its support and particularly Br John in his understanding as to why I would want to go.

RED25 Blood Bank Youth Ambassadors 2016Congratulations and SINCERE thanks to our 2016 Club Red25 Youth Blood Bank Ambassadors:

Molly Pearce Tia Caldwell Renee Szaak

The girls attended a training afternoon in preparation for their role as Blood Bank Youth Ambassadors for 2016 and came back even more enthusiastic about how important blood donations are within the community. Two years ago Trinity Catholic College were almost FIRST in the State as a donor group – something we are very proud of. However, changes to how and when people can donate – in particular students – mean we have to look at alternative ways keeping our support to this extremely important service going.

Last year we started offering a transport service for students to and from the Donor Centre (graciously manned by the Blood Bank Donor Centre volunteers). All Year 10 – 12 students have been sent an email outlining how they can donate this year via the College using this service. Because, for students between the age of 16 and 18 years old, the number of times they can donate each year has changed, we are now offering six opportunities in 2016 to donate blood using this service. The initial visit was last Wednesday 30th March and six wonderful students were our first donors for the year.

We would ask you to remember that if you, as a family member or friend of a student, donate already – or would like to, please make sure you nominate that you are donating ‘for’ Trinity Catholic College Club RED25. Every single drop counts! There are not many of us who don’t know of someone who has been in hospital and really, really reliant on receiving blood, or a blood product, to help them survive.

Our group’s blood donations will go towards the Red25 goal of achieving 25% of all blood donations needed in this country, and also help the one in three Australians who will need blood or blood products in their lifetime. Thank you! This is such an EASY and powerful way of making a contribution. You can check your eligibility to donate here Check your eligibility, take the online quiz!

Molly, Tia and Renee will be talking more about this fantastic cause at Assemblies and to the students generally. For any more information you can just ring or log onto the website! Join Trinity Catholic College and ……

LIGHTHOUSE – OUR NEW LEARNING SYSTEMAt the beginning of this year, we rolled out a new Virtual Learning Environment we called Lighthouse (thanks to the SRC for name ideas). It’s an exciting system which allows students and teachers to work together through course content, collaborate and communicate as well as submit work online. In addition to innovative teaching and learning tools Lighthouse includes a number of helpful organisation tools including calendar, timetable and email functions.

Teachers are able to use Lighthouse to email parents of a class, or individual parents when needed. We have noticed though that occasionally an e-mail application is putting emails from Lighthouse in the Junk Mail folder.

We recommend you check your Junk Mail folder for emails from Lighthouse and mark them as safe so that you receive important emails that may be sent to you. If you have questions about Lighthouse, please feel free to contact me.

ANZAC MARCHThis year Anzac Day and marches fall at the very end of Term 1 holidays and the College plans to have a presence at each of the venues mentioned below. We encourage all students to make themselves available for the march and we especially invite our Year 7 and 8 students to be involved.

All students who march as a representative of the College need to report to the teacher in charge at the respective venue and have their attendance recorded. These students will be acknowledged with community service hours and earn their House some points in the Delaney Cup as well as receiving a certificate of acknowledgement.

Students who march should wear their full winter uniform so ties, trousers and stockings will need to be found. It is recognised that some Year 7 students will not have arranged their winter uniform yet so they should dress as close as possible to the winter uniform. Shoes should be cleaned and hairstyles be in accordance with College expectations. It is also suggested that students bring a water bottle and hat with them as the weather can often be very warm.

Parents of Year 7 and 8 students should receive a detailed note outlining the Anzac March proceedings early this week.

Trinity College Captains host Northern Rivers Student Leaders’ Forum

Over 30 school/college captains from across the region descended on Trinity Catholic College on Friday 1 April for the annual Northern Rivers Student Leaders’ Forum [NRSLF] hosted by Trinity’s College Captains, Ellie Schneider and Isaac Goodwin.

The 2015 College Captains, Evie Sharman and Matthew Earl, inaugurated the NRSLF so that bridges could be built between local high schools. The forum also serves as a wonderful opportunity for our leaders to network and discuss relevant issues facing young people.

At this year’s forum student leaders discussed a range of issues from anti-bullying initiatives, sustainability in schools and how to work effectively with local government. Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell and State Member for Lismore Mr Thomas George joined the leaders and encouraged them in their discussions. Federal Member for Page, Mr Kevin Hogan, was an apology but sent his best wishes to all student leaders.

Our College Captains, Ellie and Isaac, along with the College Ministry Captains, Chloe and James, are to be commended for their organisation of the forum and the manner in which they chaired the meeting. Positive feedback was received from all participating schools and colleges: Lismore High School, Kadina High School, Richmond River High School, St John’s College Woodlawn, Blue Hills College, Ballina High School and Xavier Catholic College.

INTERIM REPORTSInterim Reports for Year 7 to 11 were emailed on Friday 1st April. Please email [email protected] if you have any issues with the reports not being received.

Parent Student Teacher interviews will open Wednesday 6th April. Please be aware that if your child received a Needs Improvement on their report it is imperative that you make an appointment with the Class Teacher.

YEAR 12 PARENTSThe students in Year 12 were emailed information about the HSC. If you would also like to read the advice use the link below http://studentsonline.bostes.nsw.edu.au/go/exams/preparing_for_your_written_exams/advice-hsc-exams/

CREATING INDEPENDENT LEARNERSThe Heads of Department are working on ways to encourage our students to work independently. Excessive help and support denies students of the opportunity to think for themselves. It stops them having to work through difficulties or solve problems. The message is that there will always be someone else there to do it for them. We all want the next generation to be able to communicate and to think critically, particularly given that most of their jobs do not even exist at the moment.

EASTER COLOURING COMPETITION

The trend towards colouring in has been very popular at Trinity so much so that we have organised 2 competitions for students this Term. The latest was the Easter Colouring In Competition held over the last 4 weeks of Term. We had some very good entries and our judge had a difficult task of selecting our winner and runner up. Congratulations to Rosalie Bain(Year 9) for winning this competition and Anouk Smith (Year7) who was our runner up.

On 19th March, six Year 11 students headed off to Tweed Heads at the ripe hour of 7.00 am to participate in the Rotary International Mock United Nations Assembly, commonly known as MUNA.

MUNA is a program for students in Year 10, 11 or 12 who have a passion for international law and foreign affairs. There are three delegates from each nominated country, who speak on specific resolutions through the eyes of that particular state. From refugee rights to domestic violence against women, four resolutions were harshly debated by the forty member states present. The students had to address the Secretary Chair with respect, were able to send diplomatic notes and propose amendments to the particular resolutions. Our two Trinity teams represented Norway (Scout Wallen, Sacha Walker, Sarah Buckley) and Israel (Julius Wassenas, Fern Cook, Kadi Burns).

MUNA is run by Rotary Clubs all around Australia, this particular event being run by the Tweed Heads Rotary Club. It was Trinity’s first time attending this event and we would like to extend our uttermost gratitude to the Lismore Rotary Club for sponsoring our two teams. If there is any Year 10 or 11 students who are looking to get involved with MUNA next year, I strongly encourage you to do so. It has made me more aware of international law and has increased my passion for foreign affairs. Both teams had a spectacular day and represented both Trinity and their nominated country proudly.
