P & C NewsThank you to those parents who attended our recent P and C meeting. Meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 6pm at the school and all parents/carers are invited to attend. A huge thank you to the parents who take the time to attend and show their support to the P and C, as well as to Chris, Kirt and the school.

At our last meeting we had some positive feedback about the Homework Centre, discussed the lines of communication between the school and parents/carers, and talked about the great things happening in our children’s school.

It was also discussed and decided that the P and C is introducing a new school cap to our uniform policy. The caps are available to purchase for $5 from the front office.

This year has seen the full implementation of our school uniform policy. Polo shirts for both juniors and seniors are no longer in our uniform policy. All uniforms can be purchased at Lowes, Lismore Square. Congratulations to students who proudly wear their uniform to school each day. The comments within the community are positive and a credit to you all.

Year 11 Biology How do we maintain biodiversity in an ecosystem?? Year 11 Biology students are currently undertaking a Depth Study to look at just that.

On Monday 14th May we went on an excursion to the Friends of the Koala education centre and worked with ecologists and biodiversity experts to conduct field surveys, collect data and participate in habitat regeneration.

We even had a little time to make it on TV:

Executive ReportThere has been a lot of great work happening at Lismore High Campus:

- Our new agriculture area has been a work in progress this year and is developing into an excellent outdoor learning space through the keen work of the students in Year 9 Work skills, Year 8 Agriculture and New Choices, led by Mr Gary Amor and Mrs Gabriella Miller.

- Our innovative ‘Accelerate Class’ is a solution-focused approach to providing students with intensive literacy and numeracy support in a non-confrontational environment. This class has been working with students from Year 7 – 10, is staffed with experienced teachers and SLSO’s and has provided immense support to students and learning.

- Our Homework Centre has been operational for the last month and has enjoyed great success. An experienced teacher is in the centre throughout the week from 3.30pm to support students in their assessments, classwork or study. Students can come any day from Monday to Thursday.

Into the next semester we have a strengthening partnership with Southern Cross University. Soon Science and Agriculture students will have the opportunity to work with university staff from the Plant Science faculty, developing bush food trials next to the school. Lismore High Campus are also taking part in a pilot program with the Health Science faculty to provide much higher levels of support at school with trainee Nurses, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists, supporting staff at the school to provide better outcomes for all our students.

Our NAIDOC event is on the 27 June 2018 from 3.30pm. Please come and celebrate with a fun-filled family afternoon at Lismore High. There will be traditional games and food, along with a BBQ and we would love to see all families there for the afternoon.

As we wind down into the holiday period, I urge parents to ensure their Year 11 and 12 students keep good study habits over the break and minimise their part-time work commitments. This is an important time and the correct study/work/life balance is crucial.

Important dates for the next couple of weeks are:

21 June 2018 – Year 10 into 11 Subject Information Day

26 June 2018 – Rivers Year 11 and 12 Parent and Teacher Night at Lismore High Campus at 4pm

We look forward to seeing you at these events.

On Wednesday 31st May, we had 20 girls from Lismore High represent the school at the North Coast Netball Schools Cup. The girls played hard and had lots of fun, and took the day to enjoy the sun. We had 3 teams participate, in the Year7/8 draw and 9/10 draw. The girls played 6 or 7 games on the day and some played up into the older team and played every game.

Lismore High had to deal with lots of strong netball; many teams filled with Rep Netball players, and they showed excellent sportsmanship throughout the entire day. Many girls played a variety of roles, from team management, to umpiring and spirit builder!

Great effort girls and a day filled with exercise, sun and fun.... the best!

Thank you Bunnings LismoreRecently in the Support Unit at Lismore High we have begun construction of a bird avery as part of our work skills program. Building the avery is enabling the students to gain skills in construction, design and many areas of mathematics.

Having the avery will not only be very visually appealing but will give the students a place they can go to when they are feeling upset, anxious or just in need of a short break.

Obviously materials for the construction don’t come cheap but thanks to the wonderful people at Bunnings Lismore we have received many of the materials required for free.

I would especially like to thank Amelia Doolan for working with me to obtain these materials. She was extremely helpful and has provided me with other ideas to raise money for the support unit.

It is really wonderful to have the support of such a major corporation within our local community.

Do you ever find yourself procrastinating? You mean to start work on an assignment, but you just keep putting it off until it ends up being a mad rush the night before it is due. The Overcoming Procrastination unit at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au looks at the reasons why students procrastinate and what techniques they can try to overcome this common problem.

Setting work targets with rewards at the end of each completed step is a well-known strategy, but an example of a less commonly known technique is the ‘two-fer’ concept. For this technique you have two tasks, one you don’t mind doing and one you have been procrastinating about. Decide on a set period of time that you will work for.

During this time, if you have any trouble working on one task or reach a point where you have a bit of a mental blank, you should then switch to the other task and alternate between them. Of course it is better to focus solely on one task but if this isn’t working by alternating between two tasks at least you are being productive for the whole period of time and forcing yourself to do some work on the less favoured task.

You might also like to visit the Assignment Skills unit at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au for some more ideas on approaching assignments.

Music Excellence for Lismore High StudentSebastian Banister of Year 7 has been playing the drums for a number of years now and amongst his school work, practices almost daily. In June 2017, he auditioned for the State Band in Sydney and was successful, being accepted into the Percussion section based on his drum performance. Being part of the State Band, Sebastian was invited to perform at the Sydney Opera House!

Sebastian was successful out of 64 students who auditioned state-wide, almost all from performing arts high schools in Sydney. In May this year he was given his music to practice prior to going to Sydney and after practicing for two days under instruction from the Opera House musicians, Sebastian and other students played for two nights at the Acacia Concert at the Sydney Opera House from 20-21 May 2018.

Sebastian proudly wore his Lismore High Campus school uniform for the duration of the event and the Principal who billeted him could not speak highly enough of him.

Well done Sebastian. This was a great experience for you and we hope you have many more to come.

Year 7 Groovy Greeks Exhibition During the beginning of Term 2 Year 7 students completed their Project Based Learning unit on Ancient Greece. As a part of this, each student had to create an exhibition item and information plaque to be displayed in the Lismore High Groovy Greek Ancient Greece Museum.

Our exhibition was open to families and school members on Wednesday 16 May after school. There was a wide variety of artefacts that all paid homage to Ancient Greece and their plaques made great efforts to answer the driving question: How has Ancient Greece influenced modern society?

Items created and displayed included an ancient anchor, Greek sandals, a replica of Archimedes Screw, theatre models, Pythagoras carving, coins, vending machine and many weapons. A few outstanding pieces will go on display at Southern Cross University Library from 4th June to 22nd June, be sure to go and have a look. Congratulations to our creative students. We are all excited to see what can be produced for the next unit, Save Our Seas.

Year 8 Design and Food TechnologyThe Year 8 Design and Technology class had to design a healthy pizza and prepare it in class. Their toppings included pumpkin, capsicum, feta, bocconcini, spinach and lean ham. They did a great job!
