PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Student Allergy medications at school: Students who have been

diagnosed with a known allergy must have a set of their

medications kept at the school in case of an emergency. For some

of our students an action plan and or a management plan must

be completed by families and returned to the school as soon as

possible. Once complete, these plans will accompany student

medications and be kept onsite. All relevant students/families

have been notified. If you have not been contacted regarding

your child and their known allergies, please contact the school to

begin this process if required.

Uniform reminders (school dress code policy)-

Uniform: All students are expected to wear the correct uniform.

As we approach winter it is important that students remain warm

and comfortable. There are a number of uniform items available

to support this, including a warm waterproof school jacket, a

school beanie and scarf. All items can be purchased through

LOWES in Warrnambool. Layby options are available. School

beanies and scarves can be purchased through the school

canteen. Alternatives to this are not acceptable; follow up from

your classroom/form group/ Year level coordinators will occur on

a regular basis. The school is always willing to support families in

need – if you require support please contact the school.

Attendance: Attached to this newsletter is information highlighting the importance of school attendance for all students P-12. Parents are required to ensure their child attends school and provide an explanation for their child's absence from school. Where possible, parents should inform the school in advance of upcoming absences. We appreciate your ongoing support in promoting and ensuring your child’s attendance to school. Tri Sports: Thanks to all parents, and in particular Christie Berry and Dean Johnson for supporting those teams. SEAN FITZPATRICK

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

With two weeks to go until the end of the term, students still need to focus on their learning, applying themselves in class. Attendance and effort in class, but importantly understanding what they are learning, why they are learning it and what the next step is to improve, enables a deeper understanding of a student’s own learning. Improvement is our goal ... keep focusing on being your best. With report writing currently underway, it is important for students and families to reflect on the progress they have made. In each subject, our staff are looking for what students have done well and where they can improve. At the end of the term, reports will be ready and when they come some questions to ask in reflection on any of the reports your child gets are:

From your own point of view, what were some key successes

over the semester?

What were up to three improvements you made in each of

your subjects?

What are three behaviours you could improve on to increase

your effort?

What are up to three skills you need in each of your subjects?

Out of all of these options, which one will you do first and

when will you do it by?

Having the conversation in this way enables your child to take ownership of where to next with their learning. Your role becomes one of coach, someone who helps your child stay in touch with their goals. DAN WALKER, 7-12 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Tri-Sports The Grade 5/6 students and their coaches are to be commended for the excellent achievement in all Tri-Sports events. Our soccer and netball teams made it through to the next level, which was played last Friday. I won’t spoil Mr Haugh’s report by revealing the results. TAP – Farm Excursion The Grade 4s loved visiting the Gristede farms last week. Please take time to read over the recount written by Ella Lewis. Kinder Parent Tours It was pleasing to see some of the Kindergarten parents take part in the School Context tours on Tuesday and Wednesday last week. Next semester, the transition program is packed with opportunities for parents and their children at the Kinder to come

and visit the school. All Kinder families have received a timeline and a letter outlining our program, but if you know of anyone wanting information, please direct them to the office or ask them to contact the school so we can send out a pack. Asthma Plan We have had some of our younger students reporting to their teachers that they have an Asthma preventer, or similar, that they use at home. Some of these students do not have Asthma plans logged with the school. It is vital that we have this information; so if your child has recently been diagnosed with Asthma, can you please contact the school to arrange an Asthma Management Plan. Parent Helper Program Unfortunately, due to a lack of numbers we are postponing our Parent Helper program until Term 4. MiniLit Thanks to the wonderful support of Lisa Egan, we have now completed our placement testing of Year 1 and 2 students who have been recognised by their teachers as needing extra reading support. The withdrawal program will commence next week; parents of the students involved should have received letters home Wednesday. Reports If your child has been at the school for less than 6 weeks as of last Friday (report writing day) it is school policy that they will not receive a written report. If you are in this situation, I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a brief interview to discuss their progress.

LIBRARY NEWS

From 1st July 2017, the library will no longer be mailing overdue or reservation notices to library members aged under 18 years. Families and individuals can prepare now for this change by advising library staff of an email address or mobile telephone number to enable notices to be delivered by email or SMS. Ask our staff to help you do this now, so you will continue to receive notifications. Emailed notices have an added advantage of sending a reminder notice 3 days prior to your items falling due (excluding the 1 week loan items). The email also has a direct link to the website to renew your loans if you choose. Both emailed notices and SMS notices ensure timely notification of your reservations being available.

Free meningococcal ACWY vaccine for Years 10, 11

and 12 In 2017 the Victorian Secondary School Vaccine

Program will offer free meningococcal ACWY vaccine

to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. The vaccine

provides protection against four strains of

meningococcal disease (ACWY) and is administered

as a single dose.

Parents/guardians of Year 10, 11 and 12 students

should look out for the Meningococcal ACWY

Secondary School Vaccine Program consent card

coming home from school with your child. You need to

read the information, complete and return the card

regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at

school.

Adolescents are at increased risk of meningococcal

disease. Although uncommon, it can become life-

threatening, very quickly. There are different strains of

meningococcal bacteria known by letters of the

alphabet, including meningococcal A, B, C, W and Y.

In recent years, the meningococcal W strain has

increased across Australia, with Victoria experiencing

11 cases to date in 2017 and 48 cases in 2016,

compared to 17 cases in 2015, four in 2014 and one

in 2013. It is now the predominant strain in Victoria.

meningococcal ACWY vaccine and how you can

Gristede’s Farm Visit By Ella Lewis On the farm trip we went to the Gristedes’ farms. The first farm, “Caragoola”, was a beef and sheep farm. The owners were Marilyn, Richard and Makka. First we went to the rye grass with Jo. My group manager was Marcia. With Jo we talked about all of the different types of grass and which ones the cows like the most. Next we went to the calf shed. Richard told us all about how

they track the calves. They used this special thing that tracked the meat when it went to a different country. Then we went down to Makka and the shearing shed. Makka showed us how to shear a sheep and that you had to do a little dance. Finally we went to go and see some maps. Then we got on the bus and drove to the second farm. “Bayview”, and this was owned by Michelle and Ash. We saw a 60 cow

rotary dairy. Again, we did four stations. We went to the dairy and saw how the waste (poo) got used more than once. Another station was with the Vet. We looked at what the cows ate. I learnt that there is a lot more acreage on the beef farm than on the dairy farm. I also learnt that the dairy farms have smaller paddocks. I had a wonderful day and learnt lots.

Tri Sports

Last Friday, several of our Year 5/6 students travelled to Warrnambool to compete in the Warrnambool Division Tri Sports Finals. Our netball and soccer teams participated in these finals, as they won the District Tri-Sports events held at Terang the previous week. Our Netball team had a very successful day, playing with great skill and teamwork to win their way through to the Grand Final. They played a fantastic game in the final but were narrowly defeated by Nullawarre. Our Soccer team also had a great day, showing wonderful teamwork and determination in all of their games. They finished the day with one win, one draw and two losses, which was a great result. They showed great improvement with every game they played. Both teams represented our school proudly on the day and showed excellent sportsmanship as they competed to the best of their abilities. Congratulations to all of the students involved and a big thanks also goes to Christie Berry and Vanessa Howard, who assisted the teams on the day.
