Whether putting a glass against the wall to listen to voices in the next room or peeping through a keyhole, there are times when curiosity gets the best of a person and they just want to know what is going on! Examples of these “snoopy” tricks can be found in videos of I Love Lucy, Friends, Bewitched. • One of the main characters of the show, Bewitched, was Gladys Kravitz. She was constantly spying on her interesting neighbor, Samantha, who happened to be a witch. When the show was on television in the 1960s and had quite a following, many would refer to their nosey neighbors as having the “Gladys Kravitz syndrome!” • In case you are wondering, nosey can be spelled with or without the “e,” according to thefreedictionary.com. It is an adjective meaning: “offensively curious or inquisitive.” While people can be nosey in the inquisitive way, many animals have superior smelling abilities. turn the page for more!

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You won’t need to participate in a prizefight to profit. In the upcoming week, you may find that you are wedged between a rock and hard place whenever you try to make a change. Wait for better timing.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): There is a tendency to cling tightly to a past victory and wear it like a badge of accomplishment. By the end of the week, you could learn that putting forth extra efforts may be both advisable and beneficial.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Know where you are. Start the week off by balancing the checkbook because you may need plenty of cash on hand for something unexpected. If you don’t need extra cash this week, you will be all set.CANCER (June 21-July 22): Remain calm in the face of the storm. The week ahead might be a poor time to initiate a major project with a partner or make a commitment. Someone could change their mind or act unpredictably.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Open your heart as well as your mind to new ways of looking at the world during the week ahead. “Your way or the highway” is not a motto that will win you friends or help you attain your objectives.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Put your eye for perfection to good use this week. Organize files, balance checkbooks, straighten out closets, buff the furniture or wax the car. Regular maintenance keeps things running smoothly.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Follow your heart, but don’t forget to take along your head. Relationships entail extra responsibilities and financial matters may need your attention. This week, you may be called upon to do your duty.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): It is up to you to decide whether to run your week or let your week run you. You will gain the most by sticking to routines and getting your desk organized. Wait to follow a lead or try something new.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Prove your loyalty. Work at your own steady pace and carefully complete any project requiring dogged precision. You may be attracted to unusual forms of entertainment in the week ahead.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Rule the roost by using rationality. Make sure you have all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed in the week ahead. Fight off an impulse to gamble with your money or argue with a special someone.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): One weed doesn’t ruin a flowerbed. Don’t let minor problems or passing disputes destroy your appreciation for the good things in life during the week ahead. Investigate new technologies.PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20): There are some silences that say nothing; however, leave nothing important unsaid. In the upcoming week you might not find a chance to let down your hair, but you have a loyal someone rooting for your success.

How to save water when gardening this spring

Springtime means one thing to many Canadians: it’s gardening time again!

(NC)—You might not know that the way you plant your garden at home can have a significant impact on helping protect and conserve water in your town or city.

Smartly-planted gardens can help ensure that rainwater is channeled, circulated and recycled, rather than flowing across the garden onto pavement and into storm sewers. Rain gardens are designed to provide opportunities for moisture to be stored within the garden.

“The idea is for gardens to soak up water like a giant sponge before it gets in the drainage system,” says Dr. Nigel Dunnett, British author and horticulture specialist at the University of Sheffield. “Water-sensitive design is something anybody can do. You can do it in your own front or back yard or even on a balcony of an apartment – something that’s very small-scale, very intimate.”

Here are three ways to help protect water in your community and have a beautiful, water-smart garden at the same time:

• Minimize paved surface areas, which don’t allow water to drain into the soil. By using interlocking brick or other water-permeable surfaces, rainwater will be absorbed where it lands, rather than being channeled off into the nearest storm sewer.

• Incorporate bioswales into your garden design. Bioswales are gently sloped landscape elements designed to remove silt and pollution from surface runoff water

• Use organic lawn-care products.

This spring, the RBC Blue Water Project has commissioned Dr Nigel Dunnett to create the RBC Blue Water Roof Garden to showcase effective urban water management at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London, England. It will be the Show’s first example of a full ‘living roof ’ that demonstrates how biodiversity and sustainable water management can be achieved on an urban rooftop.

What is Stress and how does our body adapt to stress?Stresses are changes in your internal or external environment that require changes in your body in order for your body to adapt successfully. What makes adaptation to stress possible? Gray’s Anatomy says that “it is the purpose of the brain and nervous system to control and coordinate the function of all the tissues and organs of the body and to adapt them to the environment.” Adaptation is possible because you have a nervous system.

Let’s use a simple example of a change in your environment. Imagine walking into a very cold room. How does your brain become aware that the temperature is suddenly very cold? Sensory nerves signal the brain of the temperature change. Your brain analyzes and processes that information. Is the cold temperature a potential danger to your health and survival? Of course, we all know about hypothermia. The brain then sends signals through your autonomic nerves to the glands of the skin to produce “goose bumps” which insulate your body from heat loss. The brain also sends signals through your motor nerves to your muscles to produce “shivering” which produces heat. The nervous system responded to the stress of cold and adapted by providing mechanisms that would ensure the health and survival of your body.

Making sure that your nerve system is functioning optimally is therefore the most important health measures we can have as it allows you to deal with the inevitable ups and downs of life, successfully. If you would like to learn more, we offer a free bi-monthly Health Advantage workshop, call 778-355-3533 to reserve your seat.

Lifestyle suggestions for Diabetics 3- Blood Pressure Control

Diabetics must also watch out for one other common problem - blood pressure. It is a common fact that most patients suffering from high blood sugar levels also have problems with their blood pressure. When a person’s blood sugar concentration gets higher, their blood will likely also become thicker. Imagine having to suck up honey through a straw, you would have to use much more effort to do that than if you were trying to suck up water. Your heart ends up having to work harder to circulate your blood which creates a higher pumping pressure. Remember that there are fine veins located in your eyes, kidneys and your brain. That is the reason why diabetics often have complications with those organs and areas.

Workable Lifestyle Suggestions:Try to do moderate exercise such as walking for 45 minutes per day. Do not try to take up a demanding sport without first checking with your family doctor Control alcohol consumption as it will elevate blood pressure quickly.High level of bad cholesterol LDL might narrow the pathway of your blood vessels and brings the pressure up, balance your diet with more good cholesterol HDL-rich food such as fishHave your eyesight tested at least once a yearSome vegetables such as celery has been traditionally used in Asian diets for lowering blood pressure Keep calm and learn to relax your mind, it will also help to relax your heartLife always seems to be rushing on by; take a few deep breaths first and give your body enough oxygen before you start to take on the day

Life is given; Lifestyles are ChosenStay tuned for next week’s Lifestyle Bits to find out about Vigour Health and Beauty’s Lifestyle final suggestions for those living with diabetes before we move onto the next subject.

Fuel-efficiency persuades vehicle purchasers

(NC)—With so many new vehicle choices, how does anyone narrow down their buying decision?

Natural Resources Canada points out that between vehicles in the same class, the differences in fuel consumption can be substantial.

Compare mid-size autos for example:

The most efficient mid-size vehicle for 2012 was the Nissan Leaf at a cost of $5,060 over 200,000 kilometres (km)

• The most efficient wagon for 2012 was the Toyota Prius at a cost of $9,660 over 200,000 km

• The most efficient minivan for 2012 was the Mazda5 at a cost of $17,430 over 200,000 km.

Louisa has three strikes against her. She is diabetic, she is a senior, and she is mostly black. Lousia was found homeless, but at some point she must have had a human family because she is such a good natured, loving old girl. When Louisa first arrived at Katie’s Place she was rather overwhelmed with her surroundings. She has come around and now seeks out attention from anyone who will so much as look her way. She has luminous olive-green eyes but because she’s black, older and diabetic Louisa is often overlooked by adopters. We have hope for Louisa’s future and she certainly has faith that people will like her as much as she likes them. Come and meet this sweet cat. She can be adopted as a permanent foster so you don’t need to worry about any medical costs. Louisa has been

with us for too long. She should be spending her golden years curled up on a couch with someone who adores her. Penny-Lane is also a diabetic. She is on a minimal dose and it appears

her diabetes is under control. She is a funny little girl and everyone at the shelter has fallen in love with her. Penny is not a huge fan of other cats so she spends her life in our hallway. She enjoys hiding under blankets and some of us have spent many frantic moments trying to locate her to give her her meds. Then suddenly a gray fuzzy face appears out of nowhere. If you’re looking for a little cat who would love to spend the evening sitting on your lap while you watch your favourite show, Penny-Lane just may be your girl! Because she is diabetic she would definately qualify for a permanent foster placement. Like Louisa, Penny-Lane has been at our shelter for too long and even though she has the run of the place she desperately longs for a place of her own where she can relax and be loved.

Q: My son, a New England Patriots fan, has three pet crabs. We are (Denver) Broncos fans. Will the crabs get along with one another if they have different team logos painted on their shells? A: I may not be paid as much as Tom Brady or Tim Tebow, but I love my job more because of questions like yours. Painting crabs’ shells with sports team logos is a craze, but not a healthy one. “Crab shells need to breath, and the paint interferes,” says Carol Frischmann, author of “Animal Planet: Hermit Crabs” (TFH Publications, Neptune City, NJ, 2011; $8.95). “Crabs seem to require the natural characteristics of a shell, and painting it makes a difference which may be harmful to the crab inside,” adds Frischmann, of Portland, OR. Divide your aquarium into two sections - a Patriots end and a Broncos end. You could even put up mini goalposts (use chopsticks), then see which “team” scores the most crab touchdowns.

“KILLING THEM SOFTLY”: It’s not very smart to steal from mobsters, as the protagonists of this gritty tale appear destined to learn the hard way. Brad Pitt reunites with Andrew Dominik, his writer and director on “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” to play an underworld enforcer sent after the novice criminals who robbed a mob-related card game. Two veterans of celebrated gangster sagas, James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta, also star along with Richard Jenkins and Sam Shepard. DVD extras: “making-of ” documentary; deleted scenes. *** (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“PARENTAL GUIDANCE”: Veteran talents Billy Crystal and Bette Midler are teamed in this mildly amusing, family-friendly comedy that’s very much about family ... several generations of one. The stars play grandparents enlisted to mind their daughter’s (Marisa Tomei) youngsters, prompting the elders to bring their traditional methods of child rearing into play while caring for the very modern kids. Bailee Madison (“Just Go With It”) and Tom Everett Scott (“That Thing You Do!”) are featured. DVD extras: audio commentary by Crystal and director Andy Fickman. Deleted scenes. ***

“SHAKESPEARE UNCOVERED”: Many of the Bard’s classics get new attention and appreciation from six talents - Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Irons, Derek Jacobi, theater director Trevor Nunn, Joely Richardson and David Tennant - as they host individual episodes of this recently televised PBS miniseries. Others including Helen Mirren, Jude Law, Patrick Stewart and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) also contribute their thoughts on such legendary and much-performed works as “Hamlet,” “Macbeth,” “The Tempest” and “Henry V.” ***

“THE COLLECTION”: This sequel to the hugely unpleasant thriller “The Collector” is just as gruesome, which would have to be expected. Josh Stewart returns as the lone escapee from a sadistic serial killer, enlisted to save a wealthy man’s (Christopher McDonald) daughter (Emma Fitzpatrick), who has fallen prey to the felon. That means making his way safely through a deserted hotel that now houses a variety of highly lethal traps. DVD extras: theatrical trailer; five “making-of ” documentaries; audio commentary by director and co-writer Marcus Dunstan and co-writer Patrick Melton; deleted and alternate scenes. **

“TO THE ARCTIC”: Originally exhibited in the IMAX format, this visit to one of the most forbidding yet beautiful regions of Earth boasts narration by Meryl Streep. The documentary offers expectedly majestic views of snow and ice formations, but it also offers a narrative in following a polar bear and her twin cubs as they try to survive and thrive in the bitter atmosphere. DVD extras: three “making-of ” documentaries. ***

▶ About two percent of the landmass of Canada is covered by glaciers and ice fields all year long.

▶ Located approx. 60 km North of Winnipeg, the town of Komarno, Manitoba is home to a large mosquito statue. ‘Komarno’ is the Ukrainian word for mosquito, and the area is home to some of the largest mosquitoes

in North America. Built of steel and plexiglass, the wingspan measures 4.6 m (15 ft). Because it revolves on its base, the big mosquito also acts as a weather vane. Apparently the town is now saving up for a big bug zapper.

▶ Canada is the world’s fourth largest producer of diamonds, following Botswana, Russia, and Angola. All Canadian diamonds are etched with a very tiny polar bear as identification.

▶ Many common animals are missing from Newfoundland: skunks, deer, raccoons, porcupines, groundhogs, snakes and other animals aren’t found there. During the last ice age, all animal life was wiped out by the glaciers. When the glaciers retreated, birds and bugs repopulated the island easily. Swimming animals such as beavers also returned, and some species were able to cross on the ice during winter. But animals that hibernate in winter, or who never travel far from their home ground, never made it back to the island.
