The sixth annual “Tailgate” event was hosted by the Washington County Chamber on August 29, and the crowd was loving it at Silver Wings. Football rivalries were in full gear. Event chairman Liz Hopkins said: “Thanks to all the Chamber Board members who helped to pull off this event. It was a ton of fun. We beat our fundraising goal, and more importantly, we’ve heard from everyone that they had a good time. The Blue Blazers and staff deserve a huge round of applause for working hard, but making sure the crowd had fun.”

Leadership Communication

Understanding different leadership and communication styles was the focus of Leadership Washington County’s Au-gust session. Dick Hammond from Leadership on the Move led the day-long workshop.

The day was full of activities to teach effective leadership and communication skills. The class was led through several exercises to determine their current styles of leadership and areas in which they wanted to focus on for growth. Through-out the day class members were reminded that leadership is proactive and effective leaders challenge the process, inspire a shared vision, enable others to act, model the way, and encour-age the heart.

Chamber-CVB staff member Judy Hyman is part of the new Leadership class. She stated that her favorite part of this ses-sion was when everyone stood in a circle with a rope on the floor that was tied end-to-end and coiled into itself so several circles were formed. Then one by one each participant stepped forward and grabbed a piece of the rope that was across from where they were standing. As everyone stepped back to reform the circle, the rope became more and more tangled. The chal-lenge was to keep your hand on the rope all times and untangle the rope so a large circle was formed.

As she explained, “Almost immediately, about 5 class mem-bers emerged as the person giving directions. That was too many people to follow, so some members decided to let only 2 class members give directions. This exercise also reminded me that each of us give and receive instructions differently and that what a person hears is not necessarily what is always intended, so we definitely need to remember that when trying to com-municate with others.”

Leadership Washington County is a program of the Wash-ington County Chamber aimed at educating and motivating current and future leaders. The next session will be a Team-Building Retreat on Sept. 26th and will be facilitated by Camp For All Director Kurt Podeszwa.

Success! Leadership Class of 2014 kneeling from left to right: “Communicating Christina” Koehn, “Jammin’ James” Baker, “Enthusiastic Emily” Bolenbarr, “Smarty Mari” Hinostroza-Perry, “Jokin Jill” Wallace, “Bright Becky” Ballard, “Kindness Kelvin” Raven. Standing left to right: “Helpful Harris” Kubos, “Cheerful Cheri” Baker, “Joining Jessicah” Holloway, “Jazzy Judy” Hyman, “Generous Jeff ” Weesner, “Joyous James” Pontiff, “Happy Hannah” Roemer, “Smiling Sam” Sommer, “Silly Sara” Byars, “Brave Bridgette” Schulze, “Bold Brice” Milliorn, “Courageous Kelli” Shomaker, “Crazy Kurt” Alfred, “Positive Pam” Muegge, “Sassy Susan” Myers, “Perky Patsy” Bartkowiak, “Jumping James” Meyer, “Daytime David” Eldridge.

Leadership participants “Daytime David” Eldridge and “Smiling Sam” Sommer introduce each other to the class.

Class members “Sassy Susan” Myers and “Kindness Kelvin” Raven write notes of encouragement on cards that are taped to each other’s back.

“Jumping James” Meyer, “Courageous Kelli” Shomaker, “Helpful Harris” Kubos, “Sassy Susan” Myers and “Enthusiastic” Emily Bolenbarr concentrate during a team building exercise. The marbles represented wisdom and the exercise illustrated how giving others wis-dom is more rewarding than imparting it to yourself.

The group works together to untangle a rope so that it becomes a circle while keeping one hand on the rope at all times.

The group works together to build a star out of the rope.

The Chamber’s “Business After Hours” networking events have al-ways been outstanding events each month. Chances are if you want to see someone from the local business com-munity, you will find them at “Busi-ness After Hours.”

Many know the social benefits of attending. Many more are discover-ing the business benefits of attending. If you are not yet taking advantage of these networking opportunities, you should. Here are some tips for mak-ing the most of the opportunity:

- Wear a name tag. If you don’t have one from your place of business, the Chamber will have some blanks at the event for you to fill in and wear. Name tags help people to remember your name and the business you represent.

(And some of us need more help than others in the memory department!)

- Bring your business cards. Give one to everyone you meet. This gives people your direct contact informa-tion, so they can do business with you after the event.

- Talk to people. Don’t be shy! Initiate conversations with people you don’t recognize. Let that be your conversation starter, “Hello, I don’t believe we’ve met.” Most people who attend are Chamber members, so you already have something in common. And most will be very willing to tell you about their business, so start by asking them what they do.

- Donate a door prize. Another way to get recognition at the event is to contribute a door prize to be given

away. Bring it to the Chamber before the event, or bring it with you that night. Everyone loves to win some-thing, and this is a great way to make a connection with others.

- Get to know the host. Meet the business owner(s). Be sure to find the host and say hello. Take the tour of the property, if offered. Thank them for hosting the event.

- Come early and stay late. The longer you are there, the more people you will get to meet and the more who will meet you.

- Have fun! There is always great food and drinks. Everyone has a good time at the Chamber’s Business After Hours events. Make it a point to at-tend. It may be your most important business meeting of the month!

Why Go to Business After Hours?

Chamber News & NotesGet Noticed…

The ChamberWorks newsletter is published inside The Banner-Press on the first Thursday of the month. Chamber mem-bers have the opportunity to advertise in this newsletter. Rates start at only $25 per month.

If you are looking for a new opportunity to advertise, just call Jane Hinze, Member Services Manager, at 836-3695.Another great way to promote your organization is through targeted emails. The Chamber will forward your “e-message”

to all members, as long as it meets certain criteria. For non-profits, it should not have a strong-sell for sponsorships or dona-tions. The message should be newsworthy, typically about an upcoming event. For regular businesses, it should also be about upcoming special events, as long as there is no purchase required for the reader to experience the event.

E-messages are sent a maximum of once per quarter per member during each calendar year.

A recent national study reveals that membership in a local Chamber of Commerce can significantly boost a business’ image among consumers, as well as among other businesses.

In a scientific survey of two thou-sand U.S. adults, The Shapiro Group, an Atlanta-based strategic consult-ing firm, found positive perceptions of Chamber members in a number of areas, including overall favorability, consumer awareness and reputation, and likelihood of future patronage.

The study also showed that when respondents were told that a particu-lar small business was a member of

its local Chamber, they were 44 per-cent more likely to rate it favorably than study respondents who were not told of the Chamber affiliation.

Respondents were also 63 percent more likely to want to purchase goods or services from a small business that is a Chamber member.

Alex Trouteaud, Ph.D., senior strat-egist for The Schapiro Group, said “There clearly is a feeling by respon-dents that Chamber membership is synonymous with quality and desir-ability.”

The positive impact of perceived Chamber membership is felt by big

businesses too. For example, when consumers believed that a restau-rant chain was a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, they were 40 percent more likely to eat at the fran-chise in the future.

Jim Blasingame, small business expert and president of Small Busi-ness Network, said, “Join your local Chamber, be an active participant in your Chamber’s programs and be sure to let your customers and prospects know you’re a proud Chamber sup-porter when they come in your busi-ness and when they see your market-ing material.”

New Exhibit at Brenham Heritage Museum

Texas wildlife artist Jared Paul Wilson is the subject of a solo exhibition at the Brenham Heritage Museum Septem-ber 13 through mid-November. Wilson is an accomplished artist, children’s author and cancer survivor whose work has been highlighted by the company that manufactures his artistic supplies, various publications and private col-lectors.

His work has won several awards and has been featured in print and radio, even on an international scale. A native of Lake Jackson, Texas, Wilson answered a national call for art submissions for a solo exhibition at the museum. He was chosen from a revised list of over a dozen flower-ing artists. His Texas roots and Texas subject matter were integral in his selection.

“Jared is a remarkable individual, with an uncanny tal-ent. His work looks like it is a product of a lens and film, but it is simple colored pencils, said Heritage Museum Di-rector Doug Price. “I had to look twice before realizing what I was looking at wasn’t a photo.”

Admission is free on opening night, and light refresh-ments will be provided. Donations received during the event will be split between the museum’s art conservation fund and the art program at Brenham High School. For more information about the exhibit, call the Brenham Her-

itage Museum at 979-830-8445. For more on Jared Wilson, visit the artist’s website at www.jaredpaulwilson.com.
